You can still add a pre-paid card and that will override the monthly charge. Just make sure you redeem it before the set billing date.

In my case, after I had RRoD, I redeemed my complimentary 1-month Gold that they issued me and that seemed to reset/erase my CC details. The card (debit) did not have enough funds for another month and I just made sure to redeem my code before the billing date. NO CALL to MS required in my case.

I now revert to Silver account at the end of the membership term. :)

you will need to call microsoft and have them remove the card

The only way to get rid of the credit card is to call Microsoft and have them remove it...Fair warning you might want to have a prepaid gold card to redeem b4 the auto charge date because it takes them like a month to remove the credit card from the account and you will still get charged on it if your gold runs out...

Is there a different process to remove the card you use to pay for Live month to month then there is to remove the card used to purchase points? A friend used his credit card on my account to add some points one time, and I was able to remove it from my account by accessing my profile on xbox.com.

The title was very accurate...
I usually just set up free one month golds when I want to do stuff like this.

Log onto to the xbox website.

Then choose "My Account" and there is an option to turn off auto renewals.

To delete your credit card you need to call Microsoft.

Seriously?

1. Log on to xbox website.

2. Look at the top right and you should see a box that says "My Xbox" with a little green arrow facing down.

3. Press that green arrow and select "My Account"

4. You should see 3 things. Contact Information, Membership level, and Microsoft points balance.

5. In the "Membership level" section right under "automatic renewal" in grey, there should be this in green you can click:
Turn on/off automatic renewal to get the most out of live.

Now if you still cant see it, Look above this post.

Perhaps, UK Xbox and US Xbox have varying website functionality.

*waiting for an update on this*

Let this be a lesson to you, do NOT put credit cards on your accounts if you want them removed anytime soon. Buy what you need at stores or on ebay. I mean why do you think MS wouldnt implement an easy 'removal' option for CCs? I requested to have my first account's CC removed and that was 3 years ago, its still there but only invalid which means it cant be used. I could be wrong but i dont think they will remove it ENTIRELY, just so they can validate it for you again.

Dont worry dude, its not the best laid out model. Just ring MS in the morning and ask to have the card removed. A fews clicks from the person at the other end and your set.
