Looks like the 360 slammed the PS3 over the Xmas period. Early predictions show that in America, 2million 360s were sold, closely followed by 1.8 million Wii's. And the PS3 has managed around 750,000.

Oh well :p

To be fair though they sold all of their supply so as a percentage they did better ;)

Not surprising. The average parent buying their kids a console as a pressie will look at the two and see that one has a huge array of games, a modular upgrade system, and is obviously cheaper, whilst the other has only a handful of games at the mo and requires a one hundred billion dollar tv.

This article, however, believes the tables will turn by 2010. (http://home.businesswire.com/portal/site/google/index.jsp?ndmViewId=news_view&newsId=20070102005185&newsLang=en)

The 360 has way more stuff you need to buy for it, so you have to think less about what to buy kids for christmas and just split up the parts between parents/relatives.

Genius.

True. I went to a popular EB games in my area over the weekend and they had big signs saying "PS3 - In stock". The place was pretty busy too while I was there, but everyone kept going to the 360 and Wii items. Only 1 person was by the PS3 stuff.

Probably waiting for some space by the 360 or Wii section.

I asked how many pre-orders there were for PS3s in GAME, they wouldn't say =( But then we only get them released in March over here so folks could be waiting to see how much better the competition gets.

Mmmm, I still think the PS3 percent wise is higher then the 360s. Just because you see one or two out there doesn't mean anything. That's one or two. The percent wouldn't drop as much as the 360s who has a lot in stock.
But percent wise, the Wii is the best seller. Almost always sold out. Yay for Wii.

The thing that sucks, all us experienced players have to deal with Christmas Nubs. But Sony only had and sold 40% of what they said they were going to have at launch and Christmas, so sony let peeps down.

I'm sure percentage wise the PS3 outsold the 360, but when the total number of PS3s is a fraction of that of the 360s available, is that really anything to be happy about? I mean if the PS3 wasn't sold out or almost sold out for launch, it would have been considered a failure.

Anyway Minty do you have a link to those sales numbers? I know a couple people that thought because 360s were in stock all over the place during the holiday season that they weren't selling and well, I can't help but want to rub their noses in this a little.

People in my area must really hate MS then because on all the forums I hear that PS3 and the Wii are just chilling in stores, but I haven't seen a single one since they launched.

My friends are camping out at the stores when they hear about the shipments still just to snag one.

OK so PS3 released in the UK in about 3 months? I remember 3 months prior to 360's launch I already had a preorder list as long as my arm. Both stores I work in locally have a grand total between then of..... 0. Not even the staff want them. They even just put a 360 with Dead Rising in the staff room. And these are the people whom WOULD spend that kind of on a console. Nuff said. Oh dear Sony, what have you (not yet) done??

Which way did you arrange the words, lengthways or widthways?

You forget that the PS3 is more expensive as the 360 and Wii, so they sell two units and they rake in more money that the others.

Still at least 50% are buying their PS3 to sell on ebay.

they may make more money on the console but I was under the impression that total hardware profit is no where near as much as total software profit

Yea I seen the sales. There is a website called nexgenwars I think? It had the sales of 360, PS3 and Wii but its down right now I think?

But you did hear that for ever 500 dollar system, its taking sony 700 to make them and for every 600 it cost 750? So sony is losing money and all the experts say it will be that way until around mid 08

All three systems in question are losing their respective manufacturers money as far as the hardware goes. They are certainly making up for the deficit in the sale of accessories and games (how much are those Sony HDMI cables going for again?). I believe the average informed gamer goes where the games go, and we all know... The games are on the 360 right now. I'll have a Wii when Metroid Prime drops and a PS3 when it's got 3 or 4 killer apps. I truly feel bad for anyone who paid a month's salary for a PS3 online not knowing what they were getting into.

Actually Mollywhopper, Nintendo is breaking even or making a slight profit on the Wii hardware.

I've read that the Wii production cost is coming in under $100. Nintendo ALWAYS makes money, even the past two generations when they were getting their asses kicked in marketshare they were bring in big cash.

NPD Clarifies Erroneous Media Reports

From biz.gamedaily.com (http://biz.gamedaily.com/industry/news/?id=14842):
Today a number of popular gaming websites reported on a video segment from CNBC, which talks about the video game industry and holiday sales. The gaming sites claimed that from November through the December holiday period that 2 million Xbox 360s were sold, followed by 1.8 million Wiis and 750,000 PS3s. These figures, however, were falsely attributed to The NPD Group.

NPD's David Riley informed GameDaily BIZ, "Recent media reports erroneously cited The NPD Group as having provided to CNBC December '06 retail sales for the video game industry. Although the specific CNBC segment included NPD's November '06 console hardware install base sales figures, there were no sales figures or forecasts from NPD for December 2006. NPD's December/Year-End sales data will become available Jan 11."News-Source: biz.gamedaily.com (http://biz.gamedaily.com/industry/news/?id=14842)

I have a PS3 and to be quite honest .. have only played it like twice ... however it is good for watching *ahem* movies that you download from certain websites ... for mature audiences.

Not surprising since many people couldn't even find a PS3.
