View Full Version : Thinking about renting

I think this is the next game I want to rent, but a few questions for you out there before I do:

1. How's the story?
2. It looks like the achievements are like King Kong that you just need to finish the game, is there any way to miss one of those bosses, or do you have to go through each one?
3. How tough is the battle system to learn? Looks like Fire Emblem, but a bit more complicated.
4. How much game-time can I expect?

Thanks!

i was just going to ask the same thing... nicely done. :) i know it is worth it, at least my friends think so...

my friend owns it and he beat it in about a month--and he does not play gamest that much. oh, and he got 1000 on it as he went, just like you said.

i am also curious about how the battle system works...

The battle system is simple, so you pick it up easily but there will always be some depth to it that you need to use if you want to cruise through battles.

You won't miss any achievements once you finish the storyline unless you somehow screw up.

The story is a bit of a mixed bag. Not terribly original in some ways, but unique in others. There is an annoying homosexual to begin with, but he leaves for a bit. You kind of get into it anyway so you want to see what happens next even if you hate Atsuma's guts.

I finished in around 50 or so hours, but that included my marathon levelling session to slaughter the last boss. Others are quicker, others are slower.

As a rental I'd definately recommend it.

I would recommend a rental if you have Gamefly or GamezNFlix, otherwise you might not finish it in a standard rental period. It takes about 40-50 hours to finish the game.

I'm not usually an RPG fan, but I really enjoyed this game. I liked the battle system alot. At first I was like "this game isn't that great", but after playing it for awhile, I was loving every minute of it and was sad when it was over. Highly enjoyable imo.

Sounds good, thanks. Viva Pinata goes back tonight, I'll probably pick this up.

its definitely not a final fantasy. the battles get old too quickly and theres no real battles except the last one that try ur skill. the random battles and constant walking get real annoying until ur able to get the power to turn them off. but thats not til 75% done. You game is like king kong where you get alll the achievements for passing certain parts in the story and you get the last achievements for picking the right option and continue the fight.

if i wasnt cruising for the achievemnts i would have never played this boring game. you will have to play for at least 30 hours just because of poor design. you have to walk back and forth for stupid reasons all the same time being succumb to those random battles that pop up every few feet.

The Kyoto section was pretty stupid in the 'Go here', 'Now go back', 'Wait go back over there again','Back over here' bits for a few hours.

And since when could you turn battles off?

I won't get into my feelings for the game I think my love for it is well documented by now. But I will answer your questions.

1. The story is pretty bland and doesn't really get you too involved by the end of it all. There are some interesting parts but for the most part it's a wash.

2. There is no way to miss any of the achievements. Without spoiling anything I will say to you there comes a time when you must battle a friend near the end of the game. If you choose to kill him your game will end after the battle and you won't be able to get the last two achievements for 75 and 150 points.

3. The battle system is one of my favorite parts of the game it is well done with tons of different Golems to choose from, from offensive, defensive, healers, protectors, those that power you up, etc.

4. If you play through on your own maybe about 30 or more hours. If you use the guide I've posted you should run through it in around 20-25.

The real fun part of the game is battling other folks and their golems online.
There are only a few battles during the game that will really test your skill and if you've leveled up a bit even those will be a breeze.

the game takes 20-30 hours depending on what guide you use. there's a support skill that cuts the random battles by 50% but not worth getting since the game is almost complete.

if you have rented it or still debating...just do the casino trick and u'll be able to beat the game in a weekend long gaming session.

I personally loved this game and wished I would have bought it. I like JRPGs a lot and it has a lot of content. I almost beat this game around 20 hours but I had to spend god knows how long getting a lot of money for the ice queen and I ended up finishing around 23-24 hours. Extremely easy but I think the story is really great. It all really depends on your taste. If you've played a lot of JRPGs, this is extremely cliche and typical but it's my style and I like it.

Also, the battle system is awesome. There are an abudance of moves and golems. I never got to explore that one cave with all the legendary and special golems so it sucks for me.

Pretty good game, but not exactly the RPG style I like the most. It was easier than I like for most of my RPG games. The game was still really good, but I have played better games.

It is worth playing through, but I don't know if it is worth shelling out the money to actually buy.

The battle system is unique, and it actually gives the game a better selling point. The new idea made for a better strategic piece to the genre.

The golems added an extra piece to the game, but if you were just looking to finish the game, there was no point to it. I completed the whole game and made a lot of the golems, but I didn't see a point in developing their strength all the way.

1) Save for the first 2 hours, which is crap-tastic (the dialog), the story isn't too bad. I'm 10 hrs/15% thru the game and I'm still wanting to hear & play more.

2) From what I've seen in the game and read, you'll hit all the achievements as long as you progress thru the game and beat the end boss.

3) I've played quite a few RPG's and this one isn't bad at all. I didn't read the book at all and picked it up right away. The learning curve is very minimal in my opinion.

4) I've read that an experienced player can complete the game in 30 hours and a player with less RPG experience is looking at 40 hours. This also depends on how much time you spend leveling up (like me ... a leveling whore) and if you do the side missions.

I'm sorry, I didn't realise you had such deep feelings for Makoto.

I would say if you like RPGs then you will enjoy a playthrough of this game. IMO it has zero replay value once beaten, however. The story is average and the gameplay is so-so, if not redundant at times. But overall I would say it was a worthwhile game to play. Note however, that I am an RPG fan. Someone only looking to get an easy 1000 may choose to use their time more efficiently. Took me about 40 hours to beat doing more than necessary to get all the achievements (i.e. collecting all golems). Enjoy

I loved this game, but what killed it for me was the end. No, not the ending, the end. It lets you save on the final screen, so of course I did. Little did I know that once you save on said final screen (before the last cinema), you can't go back and play some more. So there went my 30 hours down the drain. While I had really liked this game and had some great golems, it wasn't worth it to play for another 25 hours to get to where I had been. Therefore, even though I love the game, I don't play online.

So it's good for achievements, but unless you plan on playing it online don't bother buying it.

It's a long game. You basically have to have your chars maxed to do it, the story was good but the random encounters sucked, it was like every two steps. plus the vitality points system blows. if you run out of vp, your chars start the fight with 1 hp 1 mp, really sucked, but I did like the game though even though the grid battle system was strange.

Well I did end up renting it and I'm at the Ice Queen right now, so once I get home from work I should finish it off. Final thoughts:

*SPOILERS*

Story - not too bad. Pretty straightforward, but the dialogue was actually pretty funny at times. I really liked the part toward the end when you learn he's part Devil Golem, being saved from sickness when he was a kid. Most of the story was very predictable though. I haven't even got there yet, but I'm sure the Mystery Man is Makato or whatever.

Battle system - pretty cool. I liked the "dodge ball" feel and the combo system and EX attacks were really cool. I liked that you could retry the fight if you just made a bad move instead of being force to start from your last save. I actually found very little use for Golems, I much preferred using my main characters, so I haven't played with that part at all.

VP - horrible. I always forget to buy consumables and check that total, so I'd end up at a boss battle with someone getting one-shotted. Luckily I'm a save-whore and could just reload from not too far back. The refill stations needed to be more plentiful with this system.

Overall: 7.7/10

Ok, this last battle is retarded. Every battle up until this point I have been able to do with no problems, no changing any characters and no spending extra time leveling... everything I have read says I should have 5-7k health or be level 55+ going into this battle or I have no chance (and after two hours trying, I have to agree), but just playing the game and doing all the bosses so far I've got 2.3k health and level 42... that's some serious misplanning by the developers. I don't want to spend a few hours upping my stats just to finish out this game. Very upsetting.
