View Full Version : The Biggest Debate Yet:

01-21-2007, 07:44 AM
Alright, so I have been hearing it a lot both ways- it is the debate of how you have your 360 set up. On it's side, or on the small, four legs.

Me, personally? I have it on it's side, power button facing me. I don't trust an approximate five inch clearing on a five hundred dollar technology. I won't trust a hundred bucks per inch. The four little legs are lame, small, and again- lame. Imagine somehow you knock it off one leg- it is going to go down. The tray is so sensitive, that just lifting the console off the ground slightly cuts into the disc. It you knock over the console, you probably screw it up slightly and you will fuck up the disc.

My only problem with the side tactic is I hear that it overheats the 360 console faster, probably meaning that you might break your console quicker then it standing.

Microsoft actually say's not to put it on it's side when running. Also, for anyone who has an intercooler fan for the 360 be careful, because mine melted onto the back of it and messed it up. I had to pry it off with a screw driver.

01-21-2007, 08:34 AM
i got mine standing up, its better that way as the xbox was laying down plus it dosnt take up as much space then (and everyone else will have there's laying down), and i havnt had any problems with my standing up so its all good also, from what i herd the intercooler is a waste of time and dosnt even cool it off

also, there's already a thread on this

01-21-2007, 09:04 AM
With first thinking about it, it seems horizontal would be better because there's more air holes meaning that the fans would be able to pull more in and over the processors.

But without that in mind, I really don't think Microsoft would have the option to have it both ways if one way had better performance. Sure they screwed up on the design when it came to airflow, but I'm sure they did quiet a few tests on both horizontal and vertical.

As long as it has adequate airflow, either way will be fine. Just don't add a damn Intercooler and plug your PSU (power supply) directly into the wall and not into a surge protector.

I have my 360 horizontal with my slimline ps2 vertical right next to it.

01-21-2007, 01:46 PM
Mine is vertical, it is a bit of a thrill seeker so it is right on the edge of my desk too.

If it did fall off the only thing that would get broken if the floor where it lands and anyone on the floor below. If you are that worried just attach some bungie cords.

I've had it standing and I've had it laying. I don't see really where it makes a difference. Currently it is laying and isn't causing a problem.

01-21-2007, 02:11 PM
I have it laying down but yea i dont see a difference between the two.

01-21-2007, 02:58 PM
i have mine on its side..... after i got a game stuck in my xbox because i thought t might work upright i have never put it upright..... plus i have a really nice TV stand and it fits perfectly in on its side

01-21-2007, 04:53 PM
Lol, at first I thought this was referring to sexual activity :P

01-21-2007, 05:07 PM
Currently mine is on its side because my entertainment center isn't tall enough for it to stand up.

this was probably just coincidence, but maybe not....

i had mine standing up for months and recently tried it horizontally to see if the occassional freezing would stop. but it started to freeze more often, so i switched back to standing up and it is back to occassional freezing. this could be from the fact that i had it standing for so long that any kind of dust inside was on the 'bottom' and the 'bottom' became the 'side' when i flipped it, causing the dust to go everywhere...

01-21-2007, 07:16 PM
I have had my games freeze a bunch.

Are you blaming it on its position!?

01-21-2007, 07:35 PM
no he is blaming the dust

my xbox is kind of shitty. it freezes occassionally standing up.
but it froze more when horizontal. but, like was mentioned, i think it was the dust being riled up.

my games freeze no matter how i have it, but you could definitely try the other orientation to see if it fixes your problem. it didn't fix mine.

01-21-2007, 07:48 PM
Well, I didn't buy the warranty since I was tight on money. So, if I fuck up the console, I fucked it up.

And I don't have another half-grand to buy a new one.

01-21-2007, 11:04 PM
I have mine on its side... just because of a space issue and I have been havin it run pretty much from 11AM to 2AM this weekend and its good...

I have mine standing up and I have never had it crash or lock-up for a long time. Don't think it really matters though tbh.

01-22-2007, 12:16 AM
Legs all the way!

it was on the side for awhile, but I needed to move it. It only fit on its legs, so now I'm keeping it that way.

I'm finding this not to be such a great debate. Maybe it's just me.

i saw the thread title and was expecting a showdown of some kind between games or consoles... :p

my console was made on december 26th.... so it is one of the ones that they would have recalled if it was still in stores, so i have the 5 year free warrenty that microsoft uses

01-22-2007, 01:00 AM
Side...ive made the mistake of keeping it on the legs. Its fallen over at least 4 times putting those ring-scratches in many of my games.:( Side 4 Life

01-22-2007, 02:00 AM
on the side 4 lyfe aswell, reppin for the flat top.

That's not the first time I've heard of that happening. Stores should just pull those things off the shelves and send them back to Nyko.

I have my 360 on it's side, the main intake vent is on the "bottom", I'm not going to have a $400 Xbox die just because it earns one extra style point on it's end.

You need that DVD cover to get to your next Sponsor!!

You need that DVD cover to get to your next Sponsor!!

One percent doesn't really matter when the 360 is worth 1,000,000,000 on it's own.

It won't be worth much in the next five years though, as is the life of every console.

01-22-2007, 04:32 AM
I remember when the 360 came out in 2005. I remember that I couldn't afford it, so I spent two years (actually, I didn't care about the 360- I only started to consider it after I realized I will never shell out 700 bucks for a PS3, and that my computer couldn't run Oblivion) waiting for the price to drop.

After two fucking years, the price only dropped, like, twenty bucks.

01-22-2007, 04:43 AM
Meh. It won't drop much very fast. Xbox 1s are still 120 bucks.

01-22-2007, 04:46 AM
Well, the price starts the price drop as soon as the game creation starts slowing down and high levels of anticipation stops.

Right now, Microsoft has it on. Crackdown will come out soon, Halo 3, GTA 4 (*cross fingers*), and more. It won't drop the price until the games people reaaaaally want are all scooped up.

Especially Spore.

01-22-2007, 04:50 AM
I have no idea what Spore is and I don't really care. From what I've heard, it looks boring.

I'm looking forward to Halo 3 and Mass Effect. The others are just odd 60 dollars that I might spend.

01-22-2007, 04:52 AM
on the side for sure!

01-22-2007, 04:53 AM
I can tear out your throat about Spore like any other anticipating fanboy, but there is no fucking point. Opinion is opinion. It looks slightly boring, but just the shear awesomness of it makes up for it. Like, how Sims 2 gets boring at some points, it is still really fun, especially in the early stages.

Spore is just your plain God-Game, but whereas all God Games prior are constricted, this starts as one cell, grows into one organism, then into a tribe, a town, a city, a civilization, a state, a country, a continent, a world, a planet, a galaxy, etc.

It seems fun to me, and plus- it is 100% customizable.

01-22-2007, 04:55 AM
Actually, my oppinion isn't really set in gold yet. It mostly sounds boring to me because I don't know much about it and I've been too lazy to search around.

Any info would be rather nice, your short description piqued my interest.

01-22-2007, 04:57 AM
Before this video, I had no care for Spore, since I too had no clue of what it is.

36 minutes of fucking awesomness.

01-22-2007, 04:58 AM
I don't have time for a thirty minute video right now. I'll check back for it later though, thanks!

01-22-2007, 04:59 AM
Watch the first few minutes and tell me what you think.

01-22-2007, 05:11 AM
In the words of David Buznik: "It's hard for me to express myself, when I'm on the verge of exploding in my pants."

Spore now looks AWESOME!

I do have a question though. PC only?

I just hope it doesn't go the way of Fable, hyped to the extreme and then just comes off short.

01-22-2007, 05:12 AM
I just hope it doesn't go the way of Fable, hyped to the extreme and then just comes off short.

Don't fucking jynx it.

From what I heard, it is PC+360+PS3.

Or not. I am almost certain I heard the 360 bit, but for 100% it is going out on PC.

01-22-2007, 05:14 AM
I doubt I have a PC capable of handling it so I really hope it's for the 360 as well.

On the subject of it being sheer hyperbol...Will Wright usually gets it right. I still pop in Sim City 4 from time to time.

01-22-2007, 05:15 AM
Will Wright is God. Spore is like "Bruce Almighty", spend a day in the job of God.

01-22-2007, 05:17 AM
Bruce Almighty was funny.

Hey, you notice that we're the only two posting here? Weird.

01-22-2007, 05:20 AM
I've noticed it. I don't mind, you can type like someone with an elementary school education, and that is all I need to enjoy conversation.

Bruce Almighty is probably my most-watched movie ever.

I think.

01-22-2007, 05:22 AM
EDIT: That post was just all wrong...

I like the Star Wars trilogy, the old one. The new one is crap and therefore does not excist.

01-22-2007, 05:23 AM
I saw PotC once.

I saw PotC2 about a week ago, if not earlier, and I was severely dissapointed: http://www.vgcats.com/comics/?strip_id=204

01-22-2007, 05:27 AM
I'm going to bookmark that site...hillarious.

"Legolas wasn't this talkative." LMAO!

01-22-2007, 05:29 AM
VGCats is great. Another comic site you should try is:

www.ctrlaltdel-online.com (http://www.ctrlaltdel-online.com)

He does A LOT of 360 game spoofs. A week or two ago, he made a hilarious Crackdown parody. And all comics have done a bunch of GoW parodies.

Lemme go link the Crackdown parody.

01-22-2007, 05:32 AM
Ok. I've been to ctrlaltdel before. They do some funny stuff. I've seen a lot of stuff about Ninjas and Bungie there.

01-22-2007, 05:34 AM
I like their style, they have a going storyline, but once in a while, you get a random game parody.

Much love to Tim Buckley.

As for Scott, of VGCats, no week has passed that I have been dissappointed.

Well, only a few.

Win. x2

01-22-2007, 05:38 AM
I had the same expression as Kratos of the first one...the second one got some chuckles. He was clearly making fun of GoW.

01-22-2007, 05:41 AM

Making fun of GoW: http://www.vgcats.com/comics/?strip_id=219

Poor Carmine...

The Nintendo one was funny. GoW was better.

01-22-2007, 05:47 AM
I didn't even have to understand anything about GoW to like that one.

I still don't get a GoW-related thing about it, but it is still funny.

01-22-2007, 05:49 AM
Sounds like you need to get GoW. Play through the campaign once and all shall be revealed.

01-22-2007, 05:52 AM
Send me sixty bucks and I will XD

Really, I don't have enough cash to buy a new game. Getting the 360 was a stretch in the first place. My pops isn't too keen on spending that much money on a console, so I had to fork over all 260 of my dollars to help pay for the console and Oblivion (the only reason I bought the 360- better then buyin a new computer)

01-22-2007, 05:55 AM
I don't even have $60 right now. New games are kind of out of my reach as well.

01-22-2007, 08:42 PM
I figure even working at my highway-robbery job of $3 an hour, I could end up saving enough monies after long enough.

The good thing is: I am paid under the table.

Im a Manatee
01-22-2007, 11:23 PM
I have it down on it's side. Theres no vertical space in the game cabinet, anyway.

01-23-2007, 08:43 PM
Today, I looked at the under-side of the side position and it had four legs there too.

So, I mean, there are legs there too, but...

And I positioned the 360 in the upright position, and I have to admit- it looks great.

01-24-2007, 06:51 AM
There are little feet on the side...but they don't really lift the 360 high enough to allow sufficiant air flow through that main vent. I keep my 360 flat with about 7 inches around it in all directions. I've never had a problem. *knocks on wood*

01-24-2007, 06:25 PM
I have mine on it's side. It's crashed a few times, but nothing major even after leaving it on overnights for Viva Pinata 50 hours achievement.

01-25-2007, 12:43 AM
I have no problems leaving it on...I also have on the auto off for if I leave it on and forget when I go to work or something.

01-25-2007, 04:16 AM
haha that sux

Well, it does.

Anywhom, so far, I have had no problems either. Just a few crashes, but no 'Fuego'.

01-25-2007, 05:09 AM
Only 16 other people have it vertical like mine.
I keep mine vertical. I've never had any freezes except for seriously messed up games.

01-25-2007, 05:58 AM
I leave mine on its side.

I had to call Microsft because my Xbox is messed up, and when I was on the phone they told me a couple of interesting things: it has a built in surge protector, so plug it directly into the wall; the intercooler voids warranty since it isn't made by Microsoft; and the guy I talked to said he had 2 people that he talked to, that had the intercooler melt onto the Xbox.

I know some people already mentioned those, I just thought I would say what I heard from Microsoft.

01-25-2007, 11:31 AM
My 360 is verticaly set

01-25-2007, 12:15 PM
I have my 360 Horizontal

Working as a field support engineer for the council, we recently rolled out around 2000+ Dell 520's, the placement and way the pcs was positioned was decided by the users and the way there desk where set up and what space was free, then after a few weeks we realised that quite a lot of new Hardrives where clicking/failing.

Funnily enough the majority where seated vertically and very few where going faulty Horizontily.

This made me think about the way the heat was disapated, my conclusion was that all the Dells should be sat horizontal so that the heat could be dispapated correctly, im sure it will be the same for the 360.

im pretty sure its better to have them horizontal so the heat can travel up and out of the back of the pc/360 rather than travelling up and along the main boards.

Just my opinion ..
