View Full Version : The "Towel Trick". Does it work?

Any of you heard of this?

Towel Trick 1 (http://thexboxdomain.net/2007/01/15/the-towel-trick-fixes-360s/)
Towel Trick 2 (http://www.1up.com/do/newsStory?cId=3156413)
Towel Trick 3 (http://www.engadget.com/2007/01/15/towel-trick-provides-temporary-fix-to-xbox-360s-red-ring-of-d/)

Supposedly, if you get the 3 lighted ring of death, you can wrap your 360 in a towel, fire it up and leave it baking for 30-60 mins. switch it of and let it cool down. Voila! Your 360 is back and kicking!!11!

What!? No way! FxxK off! Those might be what you are thinking right now. The different sources claim that heating it will cause all the crappy soldering to expand and maybe even connect properly.

I have no idea if this works but if it does its pretty damn neat. I would'nt recommend it to any one, but if you have a broken Xbizzle3sizzle and don't have any warranty for it or got a new one or whatever you could try it.

While it "works," its probably only a temporary fix... I personally don't want to do the Towel Trick... I could see my 360 heating up, and starting a fire...

Yeah, im sceptical about it as well, but it kinda make sense. If the problem is faulty or broken soldering the heat could be able to heat it and connect better.

Anyway, if you ruin it even worse i don't think it matters. Since you never open the 360 case I guess you could send it back to Bill and he will fix it for you.

And I highly doubt it will catch fire, but if I were to try it I would stick around and look after it ;)

The thing is if this really works, its a lot easier than sending if back to MS. Here, MS uses a parcel service to pick up and deliver it so its a little faster than i the states i figure. Never had to do it my self, still on the first one, but i know a few and ive read about a lot that had to do it.

Any chance that when you send your 360 to MS repairs, the first thing they try in order to fix it is the "towel trick"? hmmm...

LOL! That could be why they break again after a few weeks if you're unlucky.

So if the towel trick works by containing the heat and allowing the internal temperature to increase? Then using an electric blanket instead of a towel will be even better. No? I'll be contacting a patent attorney in regards to what I call the "Electric Blanket Trick" straightaway.

The towel trick ehh? (runs as fast as I can into a brick wall head first getting a concussion) suddenly the towel trick makes sense to me.

Most of teh time if you have the rings f death and leave it off for a while it will boot up for half hour or so anyway. Not going to be a fix for long

i can't see any way that that can be remotely good for any type of chip in your box, if it's heating up to 'expand the soldering' then it's also expanding all the processors and everything else inside to box.

No one said it was good for it but if your 360 is showing 3 red light its already dead so it isnt really gonna matter ;)

Seriously anyone who really thinks this is an effective way to fix a piece of electronic hardware needs to have their head examined,

So fake, Maybe not the theory but this video is totally fake. He didn't have the "3 red lights of doom" He had "Im a fucking idiot and forgot to plug in my rca cables to the back of my xbox".

So for anyone that believes this video sorry to tell you but all he did was unplug it. No 3 red lights + Towl Trick = Bullshit.

would that void your warranty?

I did'nt do any research in the video. I only included the video-link as a demonstration, i only read through the comments on the article and it "seemed" interesting. There were alot of people recommending it and about noone who said they had tried it and the box blew up/caught fire or worked any less after it.

But hey, if you are waiting to ship your 360 back to MS it could help out on the waiting time if you could play a few hours a day untill you part with it. :)

If I were a myth-buster i would give it a "plausible" since I personnaly think it will work in some cases. I'm not a myth-buster though. :(

Ha! Good idea. That would be funny if they actually did it for their show.

Worth a shot. They probably won't, but they could atleast send a response e-mail, or some of their very smart members could tell us off. Seriously, the members of the site are really good at busting or proving myths on their own.

They have a frickin' war veteran telling people that you can't pull grenade pins with your teeth!

LMAO! It would be so great if they tested it on the show!

And I have throw a single handgrenade as part of my military training (+ a plasma grenade as well, Halo FTW LOL) and i would'nt like to pull out those pins with my teeth. I'm sure it could be done but you will end up craking teeth.

I would definately give it a try if I was over my warranty and got the red lights, but I'm fairly certain it is only a temporary fix.

Hi - I made that video and it isn't fake, why would I bother?

vid cable out causes 4 rol, the 3 rol causes 3 btw.

I did update one of the messages on there to say it went again, none of these tricks are 100%. That particular xbox went on to have bolts replace the stock HS retainers - that worked, for a while. It ended up on ebay and the owner (mate of mine) bought a new one.

My own xbox which was bought at launch has 'touch wood' been fine. IF it goes, then on ebay it goes and I'll be buying a ps3. As good as the system is, I'm not happy to risk another 200 ish!

Best Regards,
John

My 360 was suffering the ring of death a few weeks back and the towel trick did work on it...but only for 3 days. The ROD came back so I sent it off and got it repaired.
The GPU needed reballing. Which is why the towel trick worked for a little while (heat causes the solder to expand essentially reballing the GPU itself but it didnt solve it permanently due to the poor quality solder MS use).

I read about this trick and a few days later my xbox got the dreaded 3 lights..
Luckily I had purchased it prior to November 2006 and within a year from now...
Therefore MS is shipping me a whole new box!

mine is also less than a year old but I voided my warranty changing my case. So MS wanted 80+ for it. So I sent it elsewhere and only payed 55.
