I started my metal listening with Metallica, so they're obviously my favorites. However, I'd put Countdown to Extinction over some of Metallica's albums. ;)

However, I DID enjoy St. Anger.

Megadeth for me, although I enjoy Metallica's first 4 albums (you know, thrash metal). Both bands lost it in the 90's/early 2000's though, although after Risk, Megadeth did kind of return to their roots, haha.

The more recent stuff is good too, but DM isn't the greatest. It is good though, and I enjoy listening to it. On the other hand, Endgame is amazing, reminds me of earlier stuff, and blows DM out of the water in my opinion.

And on the vocals, Mustaine and Hetfield, they both suit the music well. Mustaine's were more snarly and might have been kind of harsh, but it suited the music. They are easier to listen to now though. Hetfield's were great, and are still good.

80's: Mixture (all the albums were good, both bands)
90's: Megadeth (Can't beat RiP and CtE)
2000's: Megadeth

The Big Four tour would have been awesome to see. Watched some videos on youtube. Am I Evil? was awesome.

Old news but I'm happy that Ellefson is back in Megadeth :D. Also can't wait for GH6... 3 Megadeth songs? Yes please!

I love both of those bands, at least their older stuff. Megadeth, though, does it for me. Always have. I've seen both in concert. Metallica twice and Megadeth 5 or 6, can't remember. Love em both!!!!

Master of Puppets vs Symphony of Destruction
For Whom the Bell Tolls vs Hangar 18
One vs Peace Sells

Its a hard choice but i gotta go with both, they have a rivalry with Dave not really seeing eye to eye with Lars and James, but hey its made for some damn good music.

I love them both, but I love Metallica more.
EDIT: To OP: So do I vote for Metallica or both?

Sidenote: When I go see Megadeth for the first time on March 22nd, I plan on wearing the Metallica shirt I got when I saw them last October. I hope to not get shanked while doing so.

You've either got a death wish or your crazy. There's no way I'd do that.

On topic, I like 'em both. I love every Metallica album except St. Anger. What the hell were they thinkin' when they made that POS.

I haven't heard every Megadeth album, but I love all the ones I've heard so far.

I'm going to meet Dave Mustaine!

Both are fantastic but Metallica has a much bigger fanbase. Fanbase means nothing.

Ha, I was thinking the same. Not so much girly as whiny/overdone growly. But I've heard similar things about James' voice. In my opinion, Dave's voice is rather badass especially on the Peace Sells album.

Oh and Megadeth is a lot more "thrashier" than Metallica is.

Honestly but, Dave was mad because Metallica never really gave him a second chance. Funny part was they kicked Dave for doing drugs even though they all did drugs. But some people really need to understand that was 20-25 years ago. He changed a lot. Him and Metallica are friends now and they probably even had a good laugh about it. Watch this:
YouTube- Lars Ulrich & James Hetfield talk about Dave Mustaine

James Hetfield argued with the head of security because the concert was stretching past midnight when it was supposed to end at 11pm. They turned on the lights 2 try to get them out but they still played seek and destroy with all the lights on

yah since you said that maybe they said funky and not good, but either way if he would've gotten the gig he wouldn't have gone on to make all his other bands...but damn what a show they would've put on *imagines james hetfeild, les claypool, andf kirk hammet on stage jamming*

on a side note i auditioned for my sister's boyfriend's "metal band"(turned out to be "whiskey-rock") a few years ago and they said i was too funky for them, they are currently working their way up to being famous....if they make it ill be so pissed, guess il just have to start a jam band...

Dave Mustaine and Cliff Burton were the guts of Metallica, their influence was very evident once they were gone from the band.

That being said... today, Megadeth is better. 20+ years ago it was Metallica.

I agree with ya totally! Metallica's first album is amazing, the next two or three were pretty awesome too, but from the black album on its been solid suck. If everyone died in that bus crash metallica would still be worshipped and respected by metalheads across the world, not a joke like they are now.

One thing is like about megadeth is how stupid and cheesey some of their lyrics are.. "there is no recess and no rules in the school of life"??? somewhere along the line someone had to say "hey dave, that is fucking retarded, maybe you should change that line?" and he was like "No, its my song" Its like megadeth is more into the music for music and arts sake, where as metallica is more about commercial success.

plus metallica kicked me off napster, fuckers!

I saw megadeth and slayer about a week ago and it was a fucking amazing show! they might be playing near you with ANTHRAX soon so go see that shit if you can. Vic Rattlehead came out on stage during dawn patrol (they did the entire rust in peace album) and that was fucking awesome, poor mans Eddie or not it was killer.

lets put St. Anger and The System has Failed next to each other and see whos making better music these days!

PS Cryptic Writings i actually really like, all the songs are inspire like animosity, try playing it over and over around your friends and youll get into a fight. i played it once for a girlfriend of mine that was totally shitty and half way through the record she started crying and apologizing to me. but i just laughed... haha, bitch!

Megadeth for me man. They've been one of my favorite bands for years. Might have given a different answer 20 years ago though. It's not the whole "metallica sold out" thing that tips it for me but the fact that they couldn't stick to their guns. Don't fix it if it ain't broken. Death magnetic was a step in the right direction but was too litlle too late.

Even though I have a burning hatred for Dave Mustaine.

I have always and will always love Metallica forever. Yes, I am a fanboi, I will admit it. I do have to say, although And Justice for All is my favorite album, I much prefer the post-black album voice (after he blew out his voice box and lost the 70s little kid whiny voice...)

Also, I do love megadeth as well. Sweating Bullets is a great song, but Metallica has a larger quantity of likeable songs. Megadeth's songs are mostly hit or miss, whereas mMetallica has a constant sound to them that Megadeth never seemed to get (maybe it's because they're changing band members every other album?....)

I have a question.

Why do people hate St. Anger so much?
No guitar solos and the snare was turned off. It has some good songs like Frantic but for the most part it could use some improvements. I still prefer this over Load though.

Is that it?

I kind of liked how there was no solos. Generally speaking I tend to get bored of Hammett's overused traditional solos, so hearing something that was just 100% groove rhythms was rather refreshing.

Lars should have left the snare as it was. I know they were going for an unproduced, untweaked sound, which I like very much, but turning the snare off was just too much.

Metallica all the way. Even though James Hetfield tries to say he is straight edge...

I love Metallica's first four albums as a guitarist but as a bassist I love Megadeth and how they didn't just bury Ellefson, Lomenzo, MacDonough and Sloas in the mix of their albums.

Justice will always be my favorite Metallica album. And Rust in Peace is one of my top ten metal albums.

Metallica, no doubt.
