Based on the Marvel Comics character from World War II. A brave, yet mild-mannered young soldier named Steve Rogers volunteers to undergo a series of experiments for a US army Super Soldier program. The military succeeds in transforming him into a human weapon, but quickly decide that their Super Soldier is far too expensive a creation to risk in combat. So, they decide to put him to use as an army celebrity and parade him across Europe to boost morale by performing in USO shows for American troops. He is even given a costume that bear the colors of Old Glory for the stage. Then, when a Nazi plot reveals itself Rogers must rise up and and become the First Avenger, in order to save his country. Steve Rogers becomes Captain America and he earns his way into the hearts and souls of every American, bringing hope and justice to a war-weary nation. Later, during a mission to Germany to stop his archenemy - the Red Skull, from launching rockets at the allies, Captain America sacrifices himself and winds up frozen in ice for almost six decades! Revived, Steve Rogers now must join forces with new heroes and become an Avenger of the modern age.

Also I found this fanmade poster that looks fantastic.

That poster is pretty epic! The only thing interesting that I heard about the movie so far is that the actor that plays Jim from The Office might be playing Steve Rogers.

Captain America is the only superhero I like from the MARVEL franchise and Red Skull is among the two villains. The other being Von Doom.

I hope they take a more grungy realistic approach like the Dark Knight and the new Superman are taking.

There's only two in the Marvel universe I call the true super heroes. Spider-Man, who I seriously relate to, even to this day, just, you know, no arachnid powers or news paper job. I'm sure if I had his powers the web WOULD shoot out my ass with my luck. But aside that point, he's just what you would expect from a super hero.

And then there's Captain America. He IS the definition of a hero, super or otherwise. He's the root of my patiortism, honestly. He's the reason I have the "stand up for what I believe in" attitude I have. I'd LOVE to see a Cap film, but it has to be done right. I've seen The Punisher (not the original, the next one with the same title) and I fear they may take that kind of approach. Just didn't do justice for Frank Castle.

And in regards to that fanmade poster, whoever did it needs to be in publicity, if he/she already isn't. That's phenomenal.

Cap is the man, hands down. Really looking forward to this and Thor. A good Avengers movie would be incredible and IMO would put the X-Men to shame (I do love the X-Men as well).
I will say this, Any decent superhero movie is better than almost everything they put in theaters these days.

Anyone know who they've got to play cap yet?
I know he's out of the running now, but my personal fave so far (out of all the maybe actors to play him) was Capt Awesome from Chuck.

Captain America's Golden Girl

Now here's a Golden Girl that's way hotter than Bea Arthur, Betty White, Rue McClanahan and Estelle Getty combined.

Hot on the heels of the news that Marvel has approached Channing Tatum (http://uk.movies.ign.com/articles/107/1077596p1.html) about playing the title role in The First Avenger: Captain America (http://uk.movies.ign.com/objects/034/034020.html) comes word that Oscar-nominated actress Keira Knightley (http://uk.stars.ign.com/objects/911/911621.html) is up for the role of Cap's love interest, Elizabeth "Betsy" Ross. The Hollywood Reporter (http://www.heatvisionblog.com/2010/03/captain-america-channing-tatum-keira-knightley.html) says "Knightley was approached last week but the studio is also looking at other actresses."

Betsy Ross first appeared way back in 1941 in Captain America Comics #1. Betsy, named after the woman who legend has it sewed the American flag at the request of George Washington, began as a member of the U.S. Army's Women's Auxiliary Army Corps before becoming a special agent for the FBI. She dated Army Private Steve Rogers, but was long unaware that he was also Captain America. After the second Bucky was wounded, Betsy became Cap's new sidekick, the costumed adventurer known as Golden Girl.

Cap's sidekick-lover Betsy Ross, a.k.a. Golden Girl.

With her Pirates of the Caribbean days now behind her, perhaps Knightley is eager to join a new franchise. One wonders if the filmmakers will combine the storyline of Bucky with Betsy's. In other words, might Betsy be the one trapped aboard that exploding plane Cap was trying to stop when he fell into the ocean? We'll see

There's so much casting news for The First Avenger: Captain America (http://uk.movies.ign.com/objects/034/034020.html) flying around at the moment that even IGN is finding it hard to keep track.

Only yesterday, we heard that Channing Tatum (http://uk.stars.ign.com/objects/917/917781.html) and Ryan Phillippe (http://uk.stars.ign.com/objects/917/917743.html) were being screen tested for the title role (http://uk.movies.ign.com/articles/107/1077596p1.html), and that Keira Knightley (http://uk.stars.ign.com/objects/911/911621.html) was being considered (http://uk.movies.ign.com/articles/107/1077812p1.html)for his love interest Elizabeth "Betsy" Ross.

It seems however that Knightley will face stiff competition for the part, with Deadline New York (http://www.deadline.com/2010/03/marvel-calling-tatum-for-captain-america/)reporting that Emily Blunt (http://uk.stars.ign.com/objects/917/917595.html) and Alice Eve are also both in the running (although they are calling the character 'Peggy').

Blunt - who almost nabbed the role of Black Window on Iron Man 2 (http://uk.movies.ign.com/objects/142/14251831.html) - appeared in The Wolfman (http://uk.movies.ign.com/objects/817/817574.html) which was directed by Captain America director Joe Johnston (http://uk.stars.ign.com/objects/915/915485.html). Weirdly, she is also the fiancee of John Krasinski (http://uk.stars.ign.com/objects/910/910738.html) who tested for the title role. The mind boggles.

http://moviesmedia.ign.com/movies/image/article/107/1077827/the-first-avenger-captain-america-20100316042221256.jpg Steve Rogers is a lucky guy: Emily Blunt and Alice Eve.

Eve meanwhile doesn't have as many Cappy connections, but is currently on our cinema screens as the lead in She's Out of My League (http://uk.movies.ign.com/objects/055/055787.html).

Phillippe on Captain America

We got the actor to discuss the Marvel movie buzz.

Just yesterday came word that actor Ryan Phillippe (http://uk.stars.ign.com/objects/917/917743.html) had tested for the title role in The First Avenger: Captain America (http://uk.movies.ign.com/objects/034/034020.html). We got the chance to ask Phillippe about the rumors while he was doing press today for his next release, MacGruber (http://uk.movies.ign.com/objects/019/019657.html), at the South by Southwest Film Festival.

Phillippe was paired with MacGruber villain Val Kilmer (http://uk.stars.ign.com/objects/914/914847.html) during the interviews. Kilmer, who played the Caped Crusader in Batman Forever, is actually the one who brought the subject up. Phillippe was coy about the project, saying that Superman and Captain America were his favorite superheroes and that he'd love to play either of them but that the Man of Steel was taken. Guess he hadn't heard that Brandon Routh won't be back as Superman after all.

When pressed about testing for the part and the status of his candidacy, Phillippe would only say that he's definitely interested in playing Cap but, "We'll see."

Right now, it looks like Marvel wants Phillippe's Stop-Loss co-star Channing Tatum to play Cap (http://uk.movies.ign.com/articles/107/1077596p1.html), Hugo Weaving as Red Skull (http://uk.movies.ign.com/articles/107/1077076p1.html), and either Keira Knightley, Emily Blunt and Alice Eve (http://uk.movies.ign.com/articles/107/1077827p1.html) as the female lead. There's some confusion over the name of that character, with The Hollywood Reporter saying it's Betsy Ross (a.k.a. Golden Girl) and Deadline New York that she's named Peggy.

Another Gossip Girl actor reportedly up for Captain America.

- Marvel Entertainment has long said that whichever actor who ended up playing the title role in Captain America (http://uk.movies.ign.com/objects/034/034020.html) would be American. But with their casting search turning into a daily who's who of rumored contenders, it appears that they may now be softening their position.

Entertainment Weekly (http://hollywoodinsider.ew.com/2010/03/16/captain-america-channing-tatum/) reports that Romanian-born actor Sebastian Stan (http://uk.stars.ign.com/objects/143/14329555.html) (Gossip Girl, Kings, The Covenant) is among the pool of finalists (http://uk.movies.ign.com/articles/107/1077596p1.html) for the role of Cap, along with previously reported candidates Channing Tatum, Chris Evans, Ryan Phillippe, Mike Vogel, and Wilson Bethel. (Stan's Gossip Girl co-star Chace Crawford had also been in the running at one point.)

EW originally reported that Tron: Legacy star Garrett Hedlund (http://uk.stars.ign.com/objects/914/914471.html) was also among these finalists -- not only that, but he was also Marvel's first choice for the role -- but have now updated their story to say Hedlund is no longer under consideration.

Marvel is expected to make a decision shortly which, of course, is what we've been hearing for well over a month now.

They need to base the movie Cap after the Ultimate version of Captain America!!

Channing Tatum doesnt deserve to be Cap. The guy that played Capt. Kirk in the new Star Trek could work. Awhile back i saw someone post a pic of some actor who looked like a dead ringer for Cap. wish i could remember his name.

Not any news on the movie, but it was bugging the hell out of me, where
I've seen the soldier they used:

http://i44.tinypic.com/o7sf2t.jpg

and it's kind of funny, calling it The first avenger; he wasn't recruited until like,
the sixth issue, of course after, Ant-man, Thor, Ironman and Wasp.

I'm not looking forward to Krasinski or Tatum,
if they get casted. I'm just hoping for a Bucky.

From everything else I've read, the story will follow "The Ultimates" storyline more than the original. I know Cap was in the first issue of "The Ultimates", but I don't remember who joined in what order.

Agreed on the Krasinski and Tatum statement though. I can't see Jim in a super hero role, and I hate Channing Tatum.

EDIT: I would really like to see Jeremy Renner do it.

Captain America Confirmed

It's official: Chris Evans (http://uk.stars.ign.com/objects/914/914210.html) is Captain America (http://uk.movies.ign.com/objects/034/034020.html).

Reports surfaced (http://uk.movies.ign.com/articles/107/1078888p1.html) on Friday that the actor -- best known to fanboys as the Human Torch from the Fantastic Four movies -- had been offered the job by Marvel. And now the Heat Vision (http://www.heatvisionblog.com/2010/03/evans-accepts-captain-america-mantle.html) blog has confirmed that the actor has accepted the role of Steve Rogers, the 90-pound weakling who through a government experiment is turned into the pinnacle of human perfection -- the star-spangled Avenger known as Captain America.

"Sources tell us the actor has not only accepted Marvel's offer," says the site, "but that the dealmaking moved so fast it's now all about dotting the i's and crossing the t's."

The news follows what turned out to be along and laborious casting search for the role, a pivotal one in the Marvel universe. Cap is not only one of the marquee heroes of Marvel, but he's also typically portrayed as the leader of the Avengers (http://uk.movies.ign.com/objects/769/769931.html). The casting for his live-action incarnation was no doubt complicated by various factors, namely that the actor who plays him will have to go from a zero to hero in his origin tale and then also be able to convey the gravitas of a leader of men on the battlefield -- and of superheroes in the eventual Avengers movie. And he'll have to have the acting chops to stand alongside the likes of Robert Downey Jr (http://uk.stars.ign.com/objects/913/913855.html). on screen.

http://moviesmedia.ign.com/movies/image/article/107/1079112/evans-cap_1269297713.jpg Evans as the Torch; Cap acting like a Torch. Coincidence?

Marvel thinks Evans can pull this all off -- and more. The actor beat out many familiar and not-so-familiar names to win the role, including John Krasinski (http://uk.stars.ign.com/objects/910/910738.html) (The Office), Sebastian Stan (http://uk.stars.ign.com/objects/143/14329555.html) (Kings), Channing Tatum (http://uk.stars.ign.com/objects/917/917781.html) (G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra), Ryan Phillippe (http://uk.stars.ign.com/objects/917/917743.html) (Crash), Mike Vogel (http://uk.stars.ign.com/objects/916/916174.html) (Cloverfield), Wilson Bethel (http://uk.stars.ign.com/objects/064/064833.html) (Generation Kill), Chace Crawford (http://uk.stars.ign.com/objects/142/14242629.html) (Gossip Girl), Garrett Hedlund (http://uk.stars.ign.com/objects/914/914471.html) (Tron Legacy), Scott Porter (http://uk.stars.ign.com/objects/915/915113.html) (Friday Night Lights), Michael Cassidy (http://uk.stars.ign.com/objects/142/14286106.html) (Privileged), Patrick Flueger (http://uk.stars.ign.com/objects/912/912477.html) (Brothers) and Jensen Ackles (http://uk.stars.ign.com/objects/913/913588.html) (Supernatural).

Chris Evans..? Really?

Well, I was planning on enjoying this movie. That's really too bad, as I am now not going to see it.

I never read any of the Captain America books, or really any comic books for that matter, but I'm pretty damn confident in saying that Rogers is over the age of 25, or how ever old Chris is. Really dumb move on their part.

Just off the top of my head, a few actors that would actually be good as cap:

Bruce Willis(Obviously)
Tim DeKay(I really think he'd be great)
Christopher Meloni

Okay.. So I can only think of three people. I obviously put in more thought than they did!

Edward Norton as Hulk was the best pick ever, and Chris Evans as Steve Rogers is the absolute worst!

I could see Meloni doing the shield some justice. but they want to appeal to the younger crowd so theres no way they're gonna get someone older to play Cap. Sad really.

Agreed. Spider-Man is what you expect for a super hero. The character of Peter Parker is just amazing... you wouldn't expect him (by look) to be a super hero, and that's what I like.

I hope this film takes the same approach that Nolan did with Batman... also, when I saw Captain America's shield in Iron Man, I knew he was going to be connected with this joint film they're making eventually.

I guess we will see how good an actor Evans is, wouldn't have been my 1st choice either, now being that Torch and Cap are polar opposites. But honestly if his hair grows out a little he looks pretty well the part of a younger Cap, a helluva lot closer than Meloni?!
I'm still excited for it though.
