View Full Version : Best Weapon to Fight Deathclaws?

i was going to put this in the broken steel sub-forum, but no one seems to view those, and i wasn't sure if these guys appear anywhere else in the game or not.

anyway, i'm on the mission 'shock value,' in the old olney sewers. my difficulty is on very easy and i'm just getting absolutely fucked up by these deathclaws. i've been through about every weapon in my inventory and can't find one to help me out. the rocket launcher does a great deal of damage but it takes so long to reload, i'm dead by the time it does. i've been making a little progress with the mini gun but it has it's draw backs too. takes a ton of bullets to kill one deathclaw and when i finally have to reload, which also takes a while with this gun, i get attacked.

if someone could please get me through this, that would be awesome.

It depends on what lever you are and your skills. I can take one out with about 3 head shots with the terrible rifle (a unique combat shotgun). You find them with the enclave and in the north west of the wasteland. Just wait until you have to go into their sanctuary for the bobblehead.

He meant the "Terrible Shotgun", which is found from the merchant "Smiling Jack" in Evergreen Mills. I also find this weapon very useful against the tougher enemies.

The best weapons I usually use to get rid of Deathclaws are the following: Alien Blaster, Bottlecap Mines, Sydney's 10mm "Ultra" SMG, Lincoln's Repeater, and my all time favorite-- Tri-Beam Laser Rifle.

Alien Blaster - The most powerful weapon in the game, it's effective against any enemy. The Alien Blaster can be obtained next to the body of a dead alien lying a few feet away from his crashed spaceship. The Alien Crash Site is found due north of MDPL-13 Power Station and northwest of the Greener Pastures Exposure Site.
More info: http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/Alien_Blaster#Fallout_3 (http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/Alien_Blaster#Fallout_3)

Bottlecap Mines - The best kind of mine in the whole game, it's craftable so the supply is plentiful. Plant these mines around the perimeter of a Deathclaw and it should take it down on very easy difficulty. The required materials for making this powerful mine are: 10 caps, Lunchbox, Sensor Module, and a Cherry Bomb. You must have the schematics too.
More info: http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/Bottlecap_Mine (http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/Bottlecap_Mine)

Sydney's 10mm "Ultra" SMG - My favorite 10mm weapon. It's found from a woman named "Sydney" (obviously) who you can kill (no bad karma) during the quest "Stealing Independence".
More info: http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/Sydney%27s_10mm_%22Ultra%22_SMG (http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/Sydney%27s_10mm_%22Ultra%22_SMG)

Lincoln's Repeater - My second favorite weapon due to the scarce amount of ammo. I use this weapon all the time against large enemies (even raiders) mostly because it's a one hit kill to the head. Lincoln's Repeater is located inside of a display case in the top floor of the Museum of American History offices.
More info: http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/Lincoln%27s_Repeater (http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/Lincoln%27s_Repeater)

Tri-Beam Laser Rifle - My all time favorite weapon, best used to take down large enemies. (Super Mutant Overlords, Deathclaws, etc..) It is mostly found from Super Mutant Overlords. This weapon is only available if you have downloaded the "Broken Steel" content.

The dart gun works great on them, It sounds stupid But Shoot it in the Leg with a dart Gun, (I think it was the Leg, might just be anywhere)
Then once its been shot with the Dart gun it Walks Very slow so you can Run away, Or you can Kill it.

I've always used A3-21's plasma rifle or the alien blaster. The alien blaster is easy to get hold of, just search on google for the location and all you have to do is go pick it up. Also A3-21's plasma rifle is fairly easy, you just have to go complete his quest on rivet city. Both really good weapons.

thanks for all the responses. i guess my main problem is that i don't really have any powerful weapons like you guys mentioned. i absolutely suck at rpgs and never really know what to do while i'm playing them. i do have A3-21's plasma rifle though, so i'm going to give that a few tries, and if it still doesn't work i'll explore some of the locations you guys mentioned.

awesome. i beat the mission first try today with A3-21's plasma rifle. i'm having a lot of trouble finding more microfusion cells for it though. i know the enclave soldiers typically carry it, but i'm not dealing with any of them right now. i was hoping moira brown would be able to sell me some, but she doesn't seem to have any either. so, where can i get some more ammo for it?

i saw a video earlier and the person said go into v.a.t.s and cripple their legs with a powerful gun, he used dart gun, i used the missile launcher. Then just shoot it down with another gun while backing away.

20-30 rounds from a gtling laser will kill them, piece of cake. if you can make your way through the 'deahtclaw sanctuary' you can get 'Vengence' a unique and etremily powerful gatling laser that doles out 100+ damage per shot.. it kills them as though tey were lambs to the slaughter...

I prefer Alien weaponry for liquefying Deathclaws...

In all seriousness, Dogmeat, if you have Broken Steel. He becomes about invincible at higher levels. I just let him face off with them and keep my distance and help out with a few shots from whatever weapon I have. Most enemies will give him first priority.

I found a flame thrower to be most effective. I do play on very easy difficulty though...

I went in there with a combat shotgun and using VATS just shot them in the head until it pops. I rarely used anything else since a few shotgun shells to the forehead of anything pretty much messes it up.

Dart Gun hands down. Once you hit them with a dart, you can take your sweet time killing them with whatever weapon you want. That excludes unarmed & melee weapons of course for obvious reasons.

Stealth Boy. The armor from Operation Anchorage is useful.

And yea, the dart gun is quite useful too.

I got the original 1000 gamerscore (which includes an adventure into the Deathclaw Den) without killing a single deathclaw... because when I saw the first one, I peed my pants, and wanted nothing to do with them for the entire rest of my playing experience.

Everytime I come across a Deathclaw I just use the dart gun as mentioned above to cripple their legs, then I finish them off with the Plasma Rifle.

Fisto! It is a unique Power Fist that when a critical hit is achieved will knock the Deathclaw (or just its head, lol) into the air. More info and location in the link below.

http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/Fisto!

Sydney's 10mm "Ultra" SMG - My favorite 10mm weapon. It's found from a woman named "Sydney" (obviously) who you can kill (no bad karma) during the quest "Stealing Independence".

You know you don't have to kill her for it. This isn't directed towards you McGoogles, but more to people reading this thread for tips. This info is taken directly from Fallout Wiki also.

It can be obtained by either killing her (no bad karma), letting her die or finishing the quest Stealing Independence (http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/Stealing_Independence) and giving her "A Note from Little Moonbeam's Father (http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/A_Note_from_Little_Moonbeam%27s_Father)". "A Note from Little Moonbeam's Father (http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/A_Note_from_Little_Moonbeam%27s_Father)" is located within the Statesman hotel (http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/Statesman_Hotel) in the quest (http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/Fallout_3_quests) Reilly's Rangers (http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/Reilly%27s_Rangers_%28quest%29). During the mission, be sure to check the side rooms until you find a skeleton on one of the beds. You'll find an assault rifle (http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/Assault_rifle) under the bed, some ammo next to it, and the voice tape (http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/A_Note_from_Little_Moonbeam%27s_Father) on the bed next to or under the corpse. Go back to Sydney in Rivet City (http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/Rivet_City) after finding it and she will tell you it was from her father, that he was attempting to make one big deal and set her up for life, but was double crossed. Realizing she was wrong about her father, she will give you the gun. After speaking to her in Rivet City (http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/Rivet_City), she will move to Underworld (http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/Underworld) and become a weapons merchant there.

alien disintegration rifle is the best and can take care of any of your enemies. i mistakenly started the mothership dlc a couple weeks back, but once finished, the best weaponery in the game can be had.

Like Paka said, Dogmeat is your best weapon against pretty much anything, deathclaws included. Pretty much every enemy I've come up against targets Dogmeat instead of me, so they'll stay away from you while you go into VATS or whatever and gun them down. Don't even need to cripple their legs and you can get straight to the killing. Plus he deals out a good amount of damage himself while they're surrounding him. Never had a problem with anything short of a Super Mutant Behemoth when I got Dogmeat. You can find him in the Scrapyard south of Minefield. They don't let you bring him into any of the DLC areas, though. :(

you'll only ever need the dart gun if your having trouble with the wasteland creatures.

brings deathclaws down to a crawl, makes them your bitch lol

As others have said, the Dart Gun will make them damn near immobile, allowing you to kill them at your own pace. I do prefer energy weapons myself, and use the A3-21 for pretty much everything. You can buy Microfusion Cells at most merchants. If they don't have any in stock, wait 3 days and check again, their stock should change.

I found both the Alien Blaster and Vengeance to be excellent for killing Deathclaws.

i find the Lincoln's Repeater to be the most help full, also the Vengeance which is found in death claw sanctuary is easy to take them out with. And i found a trick to reloading faster, if you go into your pipboy, go to your weapons section then choose a weapon other then the weapon you are using, then reselect your original weapon. You should have your weapon with a full clip.

agreed flame thrower for deathclaws & super mombo sized mutatants with lots of parrying. On all the other critters & folks I use either the dart gun (for VATS) or the ripper (real time kills). At medium to higher levels these make most combat too easy.

On my 360 version I mainly used the alien weapons & the e-xell,m-cell guns. Plus my dart gun. Once I decided to try something different on my pc playthrough I'm sorry I never tried the ripper earlier. It's ACE!!! ... Except for death claws mombo mutants. Lol

I believe if u go in some buildings in Olney u can find M-cells there have u tried going to Canterbury Commons (quest for superhuman gambit) and talk to the mayor about upgrading the traveling vendor that specializes in weapons? Forget which one but if u r in dialogue about caravans it says which specialties r which vendor. Then if u agree to pay 200 caps first & I think either 200 or 400 additional the vendors wares will have rarer items.

Also once u talk to the dude he gives u a map that oulines the circuit of what towns the vendors show up in. It's hit or muss whi u get if course but thus may be another way to get m-cells.

Also at higher levels when the soldiers start setting up camps some if their lockers hav these. As do some of the sat-com towers in the NW part of map.

If none of these work message me & I will look in the book as it explains where things are located.

Gather all weapons prior to repair it, when my high tech weapon nearly wear/tear out, I can repair if you found same weapon laying on the ground or dig up on the body to get weapon and then you can repair it till the damage will be at maxium rate and high damage rate that would be very easy kill them quicker. High tech laser equiptment way better than oldie weapons, except the Operation: Anchorage still have oldie weapons including snipers.

The gatling laser works very well against them.. if you have the vengence thats even better

Okay... so, I'm having to go through Old Olney for one of the Broken Steel quests. And I've got companions with me, otherwise I'd just continue to sneak by all of the Deathclaws.

Well...I found a couple of new super excellent weapons to take out the Deathclaws.

First...with 100 points in ENERGY WEAPONS, the BETTER CRITICALS perk (50% damage bonus for criticals), COMMANDO, SNIPER, and FINESSE perks.

A max repaired plasma rifle sneak attack critical to the head, in one shot, will take the DEATHCLAW all the way down to just 2 health bars.

Next time I see one, I'll try the same with Lincoln's Repeater, as it is very close to identical to the Plasma Rifle, except small gun vs energy weapon. I also have 100 points in small guns. So I'll see whether my character is just super badass or if Deathclaws are particularly vulnerable to plasma. I don't have any of the laser weapons, so I can't say how vulnerable they are to these.

However, if the Deathclaws are especially vulnerable to plasma, as it seems, then plasma mines, grenades, and of course the rifle, all become very useful tools now.

Honestly though, my favorite weapon to use against the Deathclaws? "Deathclaw Control Scrambler" With this item, obtained during the Broken Steel second mission (optionally), when you come across the Enclave camps with the big Jurassic Park-esque crates for the Deathclaws, well...you let the Deathclaw loose and he fights for you. By the time you get this item, the Enclave camps with these Deathclaws become more common, so they're easier to find. There's one near Old Olney, and one of the Deathclaws I set free has been following me around Old Olney, through the sewers and everything. Killing everything in its path except myself and my companions.

I focused on a purely melee (Blade) oriented character and with my stealth and Melee scores maxed and the Chinese Stealth Suit and a sword, I was able to cut down Deathclaws with 1-2 hits, up close and personal without any issues at all. (Usually, I would say 90% of the time, they were insta-kills) V.A.T.S helps you get close to them without them noticing you when you need those final few feet of space to cross, it crosses the final distance for you after exiting/confirming VATS and they rarely-never even laid a glove on me ,even on HARD mode.

The best way to take down these sons of bitches is by damaging their legs! They're really fast, but once you get their legs to crippled, they can't outrun you! :) To cripple their legs, just use some frag mines, as it follows you, place them in a row! It's funny and it works! At the end, I just go up close to it and shoot the bastard in the face with my Combat Shotgun. I first met these sons of bitches in Old Olney...>.> stupid Agatha...!

Just get right perks and grow your level. At 25-30 level they are too easy even in very hard difficulty. You ask how to kill them easily well heres one tip don't use melee those enemies who are good in melee. Other one is also simpel get good weapon what is unique version example Xuanlong assault rifle with perks bloody mess and ghoul ecology and smallguns skill 100 you can make easily over 115* DAM and use jet so even more damage.
*Not sure was it 115 but over 110 I'm pretty sure.
But if you like to use minigun use Eugene it is better than normal minigun.

Shoot anywhere with the dart gun. Then pick up pebbles laying on the ground and throw them at the deathclaw, doing .00421 damage per shot. You will kill them long before they're ever a threat to you.

The lincoln repeat works really well from long range to shoot them in the head. Or just walk backwards and shoot it witha 10mm submachinegun

First of all...the dart gun will definitely help with deathclaws, and then after that depending on whether your proficiency with energy weapons or small guns is higher I would recommend a plasma rifle or a simple assault rifle

Hmm dart gun them then whip out a gattling lazer vengeance is best, you get the tesla cannon on broken steel and at 100 energy weapons it kills deathclaws in one shot. Also there is a deathclaw that fights for you in an enclave cage. Using him may help with a few of them.
