New hand-held to use 3D technology without the need for glasses.

Nintendo Japan has announced the 3DS, a new hand-held system to be released before March 2011. This new system will be fully unveiled at this year's E3 show in June.
(http://javascript<b></b>:void(window.open('http://ds.ign.com/polls/14949.html','pollwin','width=320,height=360,scroll bars=yes,toolbar=no,location=no,resizable=yes')))
While details are a bit slim as of now, the announcement stated the console would incorporate 3D technology without the need for players to where special glasses. The 3DS will also be backwards compatible with all DS and DSi software.

Nintendo says this new portable machine will "succeed" the DS series. As of December 2009, the DS console has sold (http://uk.ds.ign.com/articles/106/1064657p1.html) 125 million units worldwide.

Rumors of a new DS console have been buzzing for a while now. The latest instance came from President and CEO Satoru Iwata (http://uk.stars.ign.com/objects/958/958699.html), when he reportedly (http://uk.ds.ign.com/articles/105/1058495p1.html) told Japanese newspaper Asahi Shimbun the company was working on a DS successor that would have "highly detailed graphics" and use a sensor with the ability to "read the movements of people playing." Another rumor suggested NVIDIA's Tegra processor would power a new DS hand-held. Both of these reports remain unconfirmed as of now, however.

I had to read this about 8 times before I could accept the validity of what I just read.

Has Nintendo gone completely BONKERS? For that matter, has the world as a whole? What the hell is this rising need to make EVERYTHING 3-D? This isn't the '50s! Besides, it ceases to be a "crowd-pleaser" if we're surrounded by it. You'd think that trends would be paid better attention to. >_>

Don't get me wrong, I LOVE Nintendo. For several years theirs were the only consoles I played out of love and poor financial situations that prevented me from having much else. But lately...I'm really glad I decided to get a 360. Maybe I finally grew up some, who knows.

But this...this continues the disturbing trend that Nintendo has been following since the name-change of the Wii. It's been taking itself less and less seriously, to the point that I don't think that even Nintendo wants to be called a "game company" any longer. They're a toy company now, and they're too worried about gimmicks than they are actually pleasing their fans.

*sigh* I miss the old days, where Nintendo was bad-ass enough to beat even Sega, who was just as awesome as they were. Now they just want to take a bad idea and make it worse. Remember Virtual Boy anyone? >_>

I just pray that this is an early April Fool's joke. The DSi XL was enough of a disappointment >_>

Nintendo's surprise announcement (http://uk.ds.ign.com/articles/107/1079233p1.html) of the 3DS hardware yesterday lacked details. In fact, aside from promising 3D visuals and backwards compatibility with the current DS line, Nintendo didn't say much at all.

That didn't stop some of Japan's biggest newspapers from digging in a bit deeper. It's unclear what's educated speculation and what was heard from Nintendo itself, but we'll pass along the info anyway.

Yomiuri Shimbun, Japan's largest paper, reported (http://www.yomiuri.co.jp/atmoney/news/20100323-OYT1T01030.htm) on some possible 3D technology for the system. The paper says "it is believed" that the system will make use of a Sharp 3D LCD panel. The system will have a film attached to the screen, separated form the screen by a tiny space. This setup makes the image look slightly different for the two eyes, giving the game visuals a 3D look.

The Nihon Keizai Shimbun, the paper that usually breaks Nintendo hardware stories, reported on some of the additional tech (http://www.nikkei.com/news/headline/article/g=96958A9C93819696E0E1E2909E8DE0E1E2E1E0E2E3E2E2E2 E2E2E2E2) that could go into the system. Nintendo plans on using a control stick for controlling characters in 3D; while the paper does not use the term "analogue stick," this is presumably what's being referred to. The system will also include rumble. Nintendo acquired patents for this control technology last year, the paper reports.

The paper also repors that the system will have expanded battery life and greater wireless range over the current DS. Its screen won't be as large as the DSi XL screen, though. Nintendo is also looking into including an accelerometer, which would allow you to tilt the system to control the action.

The papers didn't list any sources for their information. However, this is typical for larger mainstream Japanese publications, so even if the above is speculation, there's probably some good foundation behind it.

All should be clarified when Nintendo 3DS is fully unveiled at this year's E3 in June.

Hopefully it supports MP3 and video playback out of the box as well, as it'll make it rival the PSP more effectively with that. As for the 3D, quite curious as to how they'll pull it off and if it'll give you a headache or not lol...Virtual Boy...

Finally, a control-stick-pad thing. It's good, whatever it is...and I'm getting this for the release of remake titles and newer titles (like Paper Mario's new title) plus Resident Evil: Revelations and Metal Gear Solid.

I do agree to some degree that Nintendo is slipping from it's roots...perhaps since Sony and Microsoft became big competitors, it dropped it's singular purpose: gaming. Sure, they're bringing franchises to light as they always have...but will they stay on top or become mainstream for the idiots who didn't bother with games until the Wii and Modern Warfare 2?

They were doing great in the 80's, they owned it up! They made an amazing battle occur all the way up until Sony released the PSX. I don't know this for certain but I think PSX beat N64 in total sales and a game library. I love both systems but the Gamecube started a bit of a downfall. It didn't sell well, despite having graphics that could even beat the original Xbox's (Resident Evil and Resident Evil 4's graphics were AMAZING) and Nintendo needed to get back in the game, since Sony and Microsoft both had a console capable of CD, DVD and online features. Their answer...the Wii. Their motto? Get off the couch...their goal? Get the mainstream into gaming and have they succeeded? Yes.

The 3D in 3DS might be cool, but it's merely a taste of what could be absolutely real in the future (a Virtual Boy that WORKS). Right now it feels like they're just trying to jump on Sony's 3D bandwagon before they get left behind with Microsoft's Kinect...;>_>

I'm really looking forward to it. :) My only concern is whether or not I'll be able to see the 3-D effect correctly-- something wrong with my vision/depth perception where I've always had trouble see stuff properly with 3-D glasses and could never "see" the images in stereograms for the life of me. I really want to see one in person for that reason; though, even if I can't see it correctly, I can always turn off the 3-D effect I suppose.

From all the positive stuff I've read so far, I'm guessing it will be huge. I wish they'd announce a release date and a price! I will almost certainly preorder-- I'm guessing they will be nearly impossible to find on the shelves, especially if it comes out around the holiday season, when everyone will be buying them up to resell online.

Not sure what color yet, but I really like the look of the blue/black so probably that.

Not that I'm much of a hand held gamer... I only bought my DS because I was faced with a tedious flight from the UK to America that included far too many layovers for my liking... but I really lost interest in any of Nintendo's hand held console releases after they ditched the GBA slot on the DS. In my own opinion a lot of the GBA games were better than some of the toss that's been released for the DS so I was happy to be able to play them as well as the hand full of DS games that catered my interest...

So yeah, won't be wasting my money on this one ;)

Looks like it will be March over here for it-- and though no official price, the equivalent of what it will go for in Japan is $300. Sounds from what I read like they didn't want to release it before supplies were decent; probably a good idea. If it were released before the holidays in very limited numbers, they'd probably be impossible to find on the shelf and going for absurd amounts online.

I wanna try this before to buy it. I hope I will find the chance to do so in a GameStop point.
I have a nintendo ds (zelda edition), and I was thinking to sell it to buy this 3D one, but I dont know its value. any idea?
