You have to have every pixel of your landing gear on the flat surface, and your vertical speed has to be under 15 to get full points.

Here is a trick i use...When your ship is moving over your target area, press B (if your on default controls)...you will go straight up into the air and your horrizontal movement will become 0, allowing you to drop straight down. Downside to this, is you lose gas, but you can still get gold doing this 3 times over 5x score...then as the other person said, keep it below 15 vertical...meaning, use the boost (not B) to slow your speed down as you fall...if your doing like 80-100 drop speed, you will need at least 10 seconds to slow down enough, so you just have to hold the boost down, then as your about to land, tap the button to keep to prevent your speed from increasing, but don't hold it or you will start to move upwards. If you think your about to crash, just push B to boost upwards and try to land again.

just keep using the http://www.xbox360achievements.org/forum/../images/misc/rt.png to slow your descent as you get closer to surface, make sure your speed is under 15 and your lander is dead straight when you land.
if your going to fast and gonna crash press the http://www.xbox360achievements.org/forum/../images/misc/b.png button to abort( you can still crash if not pressed early enough)

hope that helps
