View Full Version : Which DS should I buy?

DS Lite
DSi
DSi XL

I'm willing to spend my pay on a DS, because I haven't had a handheld for 10 years, and with the release of Pokemon HG/SS, nostalgia is biting at me hard.

The DS Lite is obviously cheaper but but the least efficient and it can't play some DSi games?

The DSi / XL is better but doesn't have backwards compatibility with GBA.
That isn't a huge setback, but I wouldn't have minded getting the FR/LG or R/S/E generation.

Also, this isn't just for Pokemon mind you, I'm probably going to get the recent Sonic collection as well as a FF game and a Mario title.

But seeing as I know nothing about these things (apart from wikipedia ;) ), I was hoping someone could advise me on which to buy.

I have a DS lite I got about 18 months ago and I think it works just great. It's good to relax with some nice pokemon or mario, and it is perfect for not wanting to blow a large wad of cash on a DSi.

Haha, hell yeah Squirrel, that's pretty much what I want it for.
As long as it isn't outdated in a year, I'm leaning towards the Lite.

The Lite will never get outdated man. Pokemon has been around for years and as long as the Lite can still handle it, it will kick and scream for years to come.

Awesome, I figured the DSi was more for social extras.

Looks like I'll be getting one after Easter ;)

Not the DSi. I got one for my first ds and the extra features aren't worth the money imo.

I've owned a DS Lite since summer 2007 and I really like it.

Only problem for me is that the Down D-pad button is not as good as it used to be... I have to press harder for it to work...

I still want to keep it as long as possible before I switch to DSi though

Will be doing both, especially with the new higher-paying job and all.
won't be on till 5:30-7:00

Also, anyone had any experience buying a ds console over ebay?
They're roughly $80 cheaper, but they are from Hong Kong. Is there any difference?

(Btw I know they aren't region-locked)

^^^

You can get some good deals on ebay so i would go for it because if you get ripped-off theres always paypal to get your money back.

That's what I was thinking, it's cheaper plus some deals come with 30 games loaded on to an SD card.

I'm just hoping they have the proper wall-charger for AUS.

The DS Lite is fine. It's also the cheapest one, so you would have more money for games. When you go to buy games, make sure you get Scribblenauts. You HAVE to get this game if you own a DS.

There's so much new DSs coming out lately it's hard to keep up. I'm just waiting on the 3DSi XL

Definitely plan on getting that too.
Will probably buy the special edition Mario version sometime this week.

Well, I'd get the DS lite or DSi. The DS Lite may be the better of the two because it plays more games. It supports all the GBA stuff which the DSi does not. The DSi does have exclusive software but most of it isn't any good, and the games are all really small and some of them don't work well. It's not worth getting unless you don't own a digital camera imo, but it's not a very good camera. Or if you like some of the games on the DSi ware, you could get one. I think that the Bomberman one looks pretty good...

DS Lite, it's got what you need and feels nicer in your hands, it's a handheld after all :)
