What does everyone think of supergroups? Love them, hate them? I personally like the work of Temple of the Dog and Hell Yeah!, and was wondering what groups you liked.

For the point of this thread a supergroup will be a band who has at least two members from two other established bands (ie Temple of the Dog has Chris Cornell and Eddy Vedder) and not one member of an established band in another band, thats a side project.

Sorta depends i spose, thinking ''bout it Supergroups tend to be better when they're made of experienced musicians (Them Crooked Vultures - Josh Homme), rather than the unexperienced yet talented youth (Last Shadow Puppets - Alex Turner).

That said, any mix of experienced talent (hence making it a supergroup) should be encouraged.:)

They always have the opportunity to be great, but rarely do they live up to their potential. Still good bands, though.

Velvet Revolver is another good supergroup. Well, were, I guess since Scott Weiland is no longer with them.

Hell Yeah absolutely sucks, as does each of the individual bands they come from.

The best supergroup is obvious.

AUDIOSLAVE!

Honorable Mentions:
Probot, The Transplants, and Cream.

I think they're generally pretty bad, though something like Me First & The Gimme Gimmes works well. (Largely because of what the band is all about, hah)

Ayreon and Gordian Knot would be my two favorite supergroups.

Ayreon features a different line up with each new album, except for Arjen. Sometimes there are musicians or singers who return, but for the most part, the musicians are new. New to Ayreon, that is, not music.

YouTube- Ayreon-Age of Shadows

For the full list of guest musicians, see Here. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Ayreon_guest_musicians)

Like Ayreon, Gordian Knot features a different lineup with each new album. The man behind it all is Sean Malone(Ex Cynic.)

Based of the OP's definition, APC is more of a side project. To my knowledge, no one else in the band was that well known before APC.

I can't believe I forgot to mention of the best supergroups of all time: Colonel Claypool's Bucket of Bernie Brains. Featuring, most notably, Les Claypool (of Primus, among other bands, fame) and Buckethead.

well it contains Billy Howerdel from Ashes Divide, and the guitarist from Marilyn Manson if you know them. But you are correct, it is more of a side project then a supergroup

Them Crooked Vultures is one of the only ones I've ever been in to.

Temple of the Dog and Mad Season were my personal favorites.

Anyone remember that lame Supergroup show on VH1 where they had Scott from Anthrax, Sebastian Bach from Skid Row, Ted Nugent...Forget who else. Maybe someone from Biohazard? Didn't work out well.

Damnocracy? It also had Evan Seinfeld (from Biohazard) and Jason Bonham.

Them Crooked Vultures, Probot and Audioslave are the only ones I've listened to a lot but I really like all of them :D

This is probably also because I love the bands that the group came from

I like some Supergroups. Temple of the Dog and Audioslave were awesome (both had Chris Cornell), and Them Crooked Vultures, Mad Season, and the Yardbirds are/were pretty good, too.
