View Full Version : Inverted or Standard?

Seraph Xii

Simple question, do you prefer to use inverted settings or the standard settings?

If they differ then specify, such as inverted for FPS but standard controls for camera movement etc...

Edit: If a mod fixed the title, big thanks :) if somehow it fixed itself... creepy o.0

Hmmm, I wonder if there's a link between people who use inverted controls and goofy stance on Skateboard/Snowboard.

Since the good ol' Halo: CE days, I've played inverted. I don't know why, it just feels right to me. Up is down and down is up, kinda like piloting an aircraft of sorts.

Only time I use inverted controls are when i'm playing a flight simulator or something similar, for everything else I use standard controls.

Inverted all the way for me, or as my friends call it, "retarded". I simply cannot play with standard sticks, I end up walking around and alternately gazing at my feet and looking up at the sky.

The way I understand it, Inverted has the sticks mimic the action of your head (tip head back to look up, forward to look down). That said, I understand that some people prefer the stick to control where the cursor is moving on the screen.

Quote for truth.

Imagine grabbing your buddy's hair from behind. If you push his head upwards his head tilts such that his line of sight is lower than it was before (down). Similarly if you pull backwards his head tilts such that his line of sight is higher (up).

"Normal", using the hair grabbing scenario, implies that thumbstick up is analogous to lifting his whole body off the ground (not tilting the head) thus he's still looking forward and his line of vision is higher. Thumbstick down then is pulling him down towards the ground such that he's still looking forward and his line of vision is lower.

What sounds more natural?

Standard, because Inverted sounds backwards. ;)
But seriously the xbox controller works better with me for stardard, but computer games and flight sticks inverted is easier. Otherwise I use the default setup (CBA to change controls)

I'm standard for all FPS. I actually used t be inverted when I was young for what I can remember but then I played a few flying games and it somehow got me confused when I went back to any FPS.

So for all FPS I'm Standard but anything like flying games or camera movements (3rd person games/Driving with camera behind the car etc) in Inverted.

Seeing as I play A LOT more games that require me to use a Standard setting thats what I'll vote for!

HadMatters13

For the vast majority of games I prefer standard controls.

The only games I use inverted controls for are flying games, because inverted is natural when flying a plane, and Warhawk on the PS3, because it had inverted controls as the default, and by the time I'd remembered to change them to standard I had gotten so used to playing it with inverted controls I just couldn't play it with standard at all.

I prefer inverted controls for cameras.

Wow, inverted is in the minority.

I'm not sure why I play inverted. I think it might go back to countless hours spent playing Star Fox on my SNES where the controls were inverted. The same for Goldeneye on the N64. Inverted was always the default option in those games. Years of conditioning make the standard way very hard for me to navigate.

You must be confusing this thread with the "Lets take everything literally" thread or I think I saw a "How to not take a Joke: 101" somewhere too. I use standard on all consoles all the time except for flying games. Even though if you think of your neck + head as a joystick inverted does make more sense. I have tried inverted before though and I could see getting used to it if I always played that way, but I'm already used to standard so there's no point in changing. I don't think there are any advantages, although for some reason when I introduce games to people every now and then they sometimes seem to learn FPS games faster if I set their controls to inverted.

STANDARD! Inverted... Gross... Seriously how can you play when left is right, right is left, up is down and down is up? Makes no sense....

I like the standard except on flying games - how can you play flying games w/o inverted controls? Seems like an oxymoron.

I can assure you that VERY few people play with an inverted X axis, this is generally just about the Y axis :p

Standard, tried inverted once, seemed too strange for me.

I prefer standard because with inverted I often get confused when changing the camera.

Standard.

However, for 3rd person games I find myself playing the opposite of what's given for the X and Y axises (sp?) sometimes. I'm not sure what's right aside from the fact that my brain knows what I'm looking for.
