Street Fighter IV was fun to play but one thing that killed the game for me was a LOT of peoples inability to TRY something new. Like other characters for s atart. Some of you must of gotten ridiculously tired of the 50+ Tiger Shots/Hadokens being thrown every game.

Fair enough, console characters (Dan/Sakura/Gen/Rose/Gouken/Cammy) didnt see much light if you were mainly an arcade player but now with SSFIV arcade bound in japan we have the potential to at least see some more varied matchups and see some more exciting things.

Do you think this will carry over to online play or do you think that you will mostly end up seeing people use the same characters over again until a more or less definitive tier list emerges?

Its Street Fighter, people always stick with the same handful of characters. They are only tempted to try others when they see some pro on youtube using a new character like Rufus and whooping face.

Personally, i tend to stick with Cammy as my main, and when im just playing with friends, i try to use different characters.

yeah, some people have a 'handful' of characters but i notice people mostly have just 1. Any other reason for that would probably be because they are either a low tier specialist or just a character specialist. I used and still use Chun & Dhalsim as my mains but i could use 20 of the roster in the previous title. I'll probably do the same with SSFIV but add Juri/Cody to my mains since im really liking them.

Do you reckon there will be an influx of Guile players since hes basically got Champion Ed. Sonic Booms and a much better defensive game going by the recent Wong/Umehara matchups?

i think you will see more Guiles because he now has a NEW Ultra and doesn't have to do the DB,DF,DB,UF charge anymore, as it is amasing to me how many use Guile as it is but can't do his Ultra. I also expect an increase in Vega as well

I've always stuck with Ryu, despite adding flame to the Hadouken fire. I can care less, he's my best character. But I have tried different things online, mixing it up with Bison and Balrog from time to time.

I really don't think that will change dramatically in Super. Maybe we'll see more Dudley's, but nothing else.

Ryu is still my most used fighter, but I really do like Juri and Ibuki, I have completed both their trials and I kick my room mates ass all day! Lol :)

But to be honest though, Somersaul Explosion has never really been that hard to execute. Well it never has to me but then i've always used an arcade stick with the exception of the Sega Saturn controller (2nd issue). There are shortcuts around the execution.

But i reckon there will be more Guiles popping up now since the Sonic Hurricane is actually pretty goodd and safe enough on block.

I hope to see a lot more variety this time around because some of the little tweaks make a huge bit of difference (like properly set up character weights now) and iit doesnt feel like anyone is "crap" so to speak.

I'd love to try to out lots of characters, but if they're still gonna be shit like they were in vanilla sf4, I'd rather just stick with Barlog and Rufus.

Or go play a better game.

I think they did a much better job with the extra characters this time around. Abel,Fuerte, Viper were pretty weak, Rufus was halfway decent.

Ive been having alot of fun with Ibuki, my friend has been getting good with Dudley, and ive seen quite a few people playing as Guy who were ridiculously good. There is definitely more reason to try out new characters this time around i think.

I disagree, the funny thing about the first new set of character in vanilla sf4 was that no one really got any use out of them until high level matches using them were seen. From what i heard, no one really payed Viper that much attention until people saw Joe or Uryo @ Godsgarden. Rufus was stupid powerful and basically a fat version of Yun. Fuerte was too much jokes to watch and Abel.. i felt sorry for these guys when they met Giefs lol. If your talking design wise, then yeah they did feel a little weak but then this IS Capcom, they arent that unique when it comes to designing new characters lol.

Glad to hear theres a few Guy players online though.

Yeah, i tried him out and he seems to be pretty easy to pick up and play. He does alot of damage and has easy combos.

But alas, the majority of people ive seen online fall under the Ryu/Akuma/Zangief/Ken vein.

^ more or less this

I do not think this will change with super street fighter unless you got someone trying to 1000/plat it since there isnt much of a reason to try other people. Also no matter how much you balance or edit any character...

a person controlling say sagat will beat you if they know what their doing and you dont, gimped or not... Though ive seen a bit more diversity with this one than i did with SF IV so who really knows? *then again there arnt a lot of "new" fighters =P*

I just hate SF4's engine with a passion. The insanely small amounts of blockstun, virtually no hitstun, the 1 frame links, lenient inputs that make reversals stupidly easily, the floaty jumps, etc, it's a complete mess. I only play it because the community is huge and all my friends would rather play it than SF2 or Marvel or something.

In a ranked match I'll probably try to beat OP using Ryu. Basic but effective combos.

In a player match however, I usually tend to mix things up bigtime. I don't care if I get beat. Heck, I'll probably only play player matches when I complete the ranked matches-achievements. I found that, in SFIV, playing ranked matches most of the time pairs me with a turtling Guile, turling Balrog, turling Akuma, turling Sagat, basic Ryu or a srk-spamming Ken.

I remember when I was trying to main Vega and occasionally I would get a message, congratulating me for "using Vega and for not being another shoto scrub".

Now, I'm waiting for the damn delivery service to come by my house to drop of a copy of the game so I can start playing it. For you OP, I'll main a character who's not mainstream. Always wanted to do that. :)

I think thats part of the problem, people are too concerned with their ranked "rank," heaven forbid they step out of their comfort zone and actually lose a match with one of the 30 characters who dont wear a Gi.

But anyway, there are plenty of people who mix it up in player matches (endless and team battle are not ranked), so its not so bad. But if youre trying to get all the online achievements, one of them includes getting ALL characters to Level C (From C to Shining C achv), which takes about 20 ranked wins a pop

Yeah they act like there real name is up here and they will get credit for having that many wins ore something. Nobody knows you so why keep up trying to only win? Same thing happens on all fighters. Like on MK vs DC, Last night I was constantly matched up with a guy who has over 11000 wins (only 2000 losses). Now he HAS 1000 gamerscore on it meaning he has done all the challenges, means he is probably good right?? WELL, all he did was keep spamming Supermans infinite combo. I was like why keep ssuch a long streak going on a POS game thats been out for two years, when you obviously can play with other people? BUT its the nature of the fighting game, people get wins thats all they care about. I personally use Zangief as my main, and I like Adon, Dudley, Cody etc. I used to play with Ken but wins and losses don't matter to me, I have no problem straying outside of the Shoto Zone.

Regarding bad sportsmanship online, what bothers me even more than people spamming with Akuma and Sagat or turtling with Guile is when people quit out when they're getting beaten in order to preserve their skill points. Like, really, what's the point in having them if they don't reflect true skill? So you have a gazillion points and a 1000 match winning streak, but you're not actually that good and every third person you fight figures it out.... I don't get it.

As for trying new characters, this is Street Fighter. Everyone should be able to kick ass and take names with Ken and Ryu first and foremost. I'm all for learning the other characters but I'm insanely unimpressed by anyone who can beat me by turtling with Guile but doesn't know their way around the stars of the show - namely the red and white bad boys.

Whoever said Viper was weak - wrong. Viper has some ridiculously sick combos and (like Rose) brings an element of surprise with her since a lot of players don't know what to expect from her.

I admit I used to play Ryu ALL the time but recently ive found it very fun to branch out and try other characters. I couldn't care less if I lose if I can build up a decent understanding of every character. That's my goal for SSF4 anyway.

I pretty much just get Ryu Sagat or Juri and every now and then a guy cody or ibuki but that's about it. I played ranked match for about 10 hours straight today and didn't even see about 10 of the characters and about 10 of the characters I did see I only saw once.

'rogs, Guiles, and Juris are the number one picks I've seen. There are a LOT of talented Guys out there and a lot of cheap Codys.

Haven't played many flowchart Kens (although it is only day 4 since release so you KNOW it's coming).

The biggest surprise? No one using Bison anymore. Played 1 Bison in 3 days. Either just my luck or total fluke.

I play Ryu as a main to get the achievements done and then fluctuate between him and Fei (who is the foot shoto). Dudley is the other alt (still a shoto, but without a fireball).

When I played it the week before official release, I saw 1 of everyone except Fuerte.
Now since Retail, no exaggeration, Ken, Ryu, Ken, Ryu, Ken, Dudley, Ken, Makoto, Ken, Ryu, Sagat, Vega, Ken.

Good old days. And its the Kens that ragequit.

That all depends. Im sure Juri will get used... Amazing character. But I have no doubt people whom grew up playing Ryu, Ken, Sagat and Akuma will continue to use them.

As to spam fireballs. Just part of the game.... Higher ranking players wont be doing that as much...

So far for me, its been not too bad. In fact, Endless battle has turned out worse compared to Ranked but thats only because of peoples dumb attitudes in Endless Battle. I can and do switch between around 2 thirds of the roster in Endless because im not losing anything, its for fun though in ranked, i main a very aggressive Cody, Chun, Juri and Dhalsim. In ranked though i reckon i've seen more shotos than in Endless lol.

At the moment I'm only playing with Akuma or Ken on ranked matches but that's because it has been almost 6 months last time I played SF IV. I just want my opponent to have at least a little challenge and a good match than seeing me bouncing around the area with character I'm not familiar with. With friends I'm training my other characters so I don't have to use same characters all the time. I don't care if I lose or win but it just feels unnecessary to get my ass whipped with perfect because I'm so rusty for not playing in such a long time.

I played no less than 12 ken/ryu matches in a row vs my Dudley... each time i specifically chose a different ranked opponent and yet they all kept picking the same 2 from the 35 available characters. I switched off for a while after that as it was making Rank Mode battles more than a little tedius.

Is there a quick button i can press somewhere which shows me their main chosen character before i (dont) get surprised at the character select screen with yet another Ryu/Kem mainer.

Saying that ive been pleasantly surprised by the number of Hakan, Juri, Ibuki, Makoto and T.Hawk fighters online. It shows at least there are people willing to give the new guys a go - not seen any Dee Jay players online though and only one Guy fighter to date.
