I'm not really one for films but since the rental shop near me opened I have tried to start, i watched Donnie Darko and abosultly love it what are your views?

I liked it, but it's far from the best film ever. Even after watching it several times and further reading into the story, I still can't wrap my head about what happened in it.

Avoid the sequel (S. Darko) though. It's terrible.

It is one my favourite films.

Yea I don't want to watch the S.Darko film, there are certain films that just shouldn't have a sequel and this is one of them.

Sadly, i have watched S.Darko. It was a bad film even on it's own merit. But the old directors is meant to be back on board for the third.

Donnie Darko is a brilliant film, but not the best ever. Not close. I watched The Dark Knight (for maybe the 4th time) today on sky while at home jobless and I seriously do think its maybe the best film in at least 10 years.

Wall-E, There Will Be Blood, Lord of the Rings 1. Amores Perros. And TDK, the best films of the last 10 years for me. Must a be a ton more thinkin about it. I have Synecdoche New York on BR, not watched it yet, even though it was the first BR I bought last year!

Donnie Darko wasn't a bad film but it defiantly isn't the best. I personally thought the ending was just plain dumb. I'd have to say the best part was when the girl got ran over, for some reason I almost cried laughing. But I'd have to say Oldboy is the best movie in my opinion. It's just great.

I do really like Donnie Darko, but for me it definitely has to be La Meglio Gioventý, (The Best of Youth).
Amazing Italian epic.

Out of the 20-some movies I've seen this decade, it was definitely the best. Although, I didn't think of Up In The Air, that film was surprisingly fun.

Now that's where it is. BEST MOVIE EVAR!!! :D

Sadly, I'm only half joking. I wouldn't honestly go so far as to say best film ever, but I do greatly enjoy this film and have watched it countless times. What can I say, I'm a Jim Varney fan. R.I.P.

I actually enjoyed Donnie Darko, but like many others, wouldn't go so far as to say best film ever. It has no friggin' replay value! It's like the Saw films. Once you know wtf the ending is, there's absolutely nothing in the film to draw you back to watch it again. I won't ruin it, but I honestly didn't quite get the ending at first, someone explained it to me and my head couldn't wrap itself around it. The latter portion of the film just made no sense, it seemed to just go too far out there to go for the punch out ending. As I watched it, it was like the built an alternating ending around In the Mouth of Madness, which I thought was a superb film that really fucked with you head. If you haven't seen it, and you liked this film, you'll love that one and probably many other short stories by H.P. Lovecraft, and some of the films adapted from his works.

And I gotta throw my hat in the ring for Aliens over Evil Dead. I LOVE the Evil Dead trilogy, don't get me wrong, but the fact Geiger designed the aliens for the alien series...WIN! Those things are so fucking bad ass and menacing even when you just look at them. The whole atmosphere of the film was just more enjoyable in my opinion, though Evil Dead was more of a mind fuck film and did it's just very well. It's a tough call but Aliens gets my vote by a slight margin just cause of the design of the aliens.

And BarbaricGoose: Citizen Kane truly is one of the greatest films of all time and am pleased to see that you referenced it.

Wow that's freakin weird, I'm actually watching Donnie Darko right now and randomly came across this post...

But that's beside the point. Not in any way could this be considered the best film ever, it comes nowhere close, but its good. I'd say somewhere between top 150 and top 100...

Most overrated film ever? Yeah. Second to Avatar.

I don't know about Avatar (I have it on DVD, I just haven't gotten around to watching it yet), but from what I've heard and read about it, Donnie Darko seems like a crap film. I've also read the plot synopsis (hoping it would change my mind about the film), but it doesn't make a damn bit of sense, and people seem to love to defend the movie by saying "you just don't get it". So, yeah, it's crap. On a slightly different topic, Feast was an awesome movie.

Donnie Darko overrated, yes, but if people like it, people like it, not a problem with that. Though Avatar....saying avatar is more overrated than the movie itself. The movie was good, it's the highest grossing movie in the world. It can be overrated all it wants, it made bank. :P

P.S. There is no best movie ever.

'Best' = opinion, so yes there is no best movie ever. And I'm don't care how much Catatar made, it's overrated. Kinda like the mentality of the people that say Lil Wayne is good because he makes money.

I wasn't trying to say it's bad to like Donnie Darko, overrated is overrated, no matter how many fans it has and Donnie Darko is a good movie, but it gets way more praise than it deserves.

It depends on how well the movie is put together. There are movies that not everyone likes but deserves massive praise for what they did to the movie industry (2001, Blade Runner, etc). There are movies that get massive praise (Avatar) that don't deserve it because Avatar's stolen story, terrible dialogue and cliche feeling make it not the greatest movie ever like everyone claims.

Most overrated film ever? Yeah. Second to Avatar.

I'd have to agree with this, instead of making a long post about why. Let's just say it's not only overrated but adding to that it's so open to interpretation most everyone that thinks it's truly awesome has a different opinion about what the events mean.

In your mind this could mean that's why it's an awesome film, but in others could mean since it doesn't give you a central point to expand on it, it's utter crap.

I'm not comparing this movie to Donnie Darko, but if anyone seen the recent film Mr.Nobody, that would be a prime example imo. That movie tried to hard and actually got people to believe it was a masterpiece. While I thought it was utter crap. To each his own though...
