Okay stupid question,

I have 6 months left on my xbox live gold acct, but today I bought a 1 yr gold live membership at best buy as they were $39.99, $20 off for me here in Canada.. if I type in the code, will it renew my year as of today and I lose those 6 months I had left? or will it extend it from the 6 months I have left?

I couldn't find the answer anywhere :(

It will extend your membership by a year so you will have 1 year and 6 months

It shouldn't effect your 6 months at all. It should just add itself onto the 1 year.

Extend as long as your membership can then you renew

After reedeeming it, go into "Account Management" and check your Membership details. The "END DATE" will have advanced by the 1 year. But . . .

Why not just wait before extending it? I bought a 12+1 month subscription back in 2008 and I didn't even activate it until 9 months later. I had a stack of 48 hour codes that I wanted to use and those worked fine. There was also a time that our internet was down for a few weeks. I had to change ISPs. See, if I had redeemed the subscription immediately I would have lost that time. There was also an instance when a friend gave me a 1-month code and I got another code after getting my 2nd RRoD repair.

What I'm saying is that you don't know what unforseen circumstances might come up and committing yourself to 1 year right now really shouldn't be a priority.

The code won't expire. Keep it in a safe place (write it down) 'til needed. Good that you got a nice deal on it though.

P.S. You are allowed to pre-pay up to 36 months of Xbox LIVE Gold membership.

Yeah, you never know what could happen. Like losing your card somehow ;)

Also, if you plan on saving it for later, make sure you check the card and see if it expires. I'm not sure if 12 month cards have expiration dates, but I know many 24/48 hour cards have them.

. . .but I know many 24/48 hour cards have them.

Just last year I was able to "acquire" ;) a single 48-hour card from GRAW2 that had an expiration date of 6/30/07. I was able to redeem it with no problem -- in 2009.

The year+1 month subscription card I bought did not have an expiration date. I looked all over the card's fine print.
