Marvel Studios announced today that Hugo Weaving (http://uk.stars.ign.com/objects/911/911068.html) has been cast to star as Johann Schmidt aka the Red Skull (http://uk.stars.ign.com/objects/924/924044.html) in the studio's highly anticipated movie Captain America: The First Avenger (http://uk.movies.ign.com/objects/034/034020.html) opposite Chris Evans and Hayley Atwell.

In the early comics, Johann Schmidt was drafted into loyal service of The Third Reich and renamed "The Red Skull". The character will be updated for the feature adaptation. Joe Johnston (http://uk.stars.ign.com/objects/915/915485.html) will direct the film penned by Christopher Markus & Stephen McFeely.

Marvel Studios' Kevin Feige will produce Captain America: The First Avenger. Alan Fine, Stan Lee, David Maisel and Louis D'Esposito will executive produce. The film will be released in the US on July 22, 2011 and distributed by Paramount Pictures.

Captain America: The First Avenger will focus on the early days of the Marvel Universe when Steve Rogers volunteers to participate in an experimental program that turns him into the Super Soldier known as Captain America.

Weaving was last seen in The Wolfman (http://uk.movies.ign.com/objects/817/817574.html) and his voice is very recognizable as Megatron from Transformers and Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen as well as Noah the Elder from Happy Feet. His other film credits include starring in V for Vendetta, The Matrix franchise, and The Lord of the Rings trilogy.

In addition to Captain America: The First Avenger, Marvel Studios will release a slate of films based on the Marvel characters including the highly anticipated sequel, Iron Man 2, starring Robert Downey Jr. and Gwyneth Paltrow on May 7, 2010, Thor on May 6, 2011, and Marvel Studios' The Avengers on May 4, 2012.

Hugo Weaving as Red Skull is full of win. I just hope they don't force him to wear a mask the entire movie. Hugo's facial features and his expressions are what makes him awesome. A few prosthetics here and there and some red face paint and we're good to go.

Iron Man 1 & 2 and The Incredible Hulk (2008) were some of Marvel's best work to date. Let's hope the success of these films can push Captain American in the right direction.

I cannot wait to this image on the big screen.

I disagree with his facial features and expressions make him awesome.

Did you see V for Vendetta?

His body language and voice acting were both superb.

Weaving is such a great actor like in the Matrix and LOTR Trilogy. Placing him as the Red Skull is a great idea.

I knew this for a while, and Hugo Weaving is the only reason i will be watching Captain America. i don't really care for Chris Evans...

I'm not going to disagree there, the man is awesome all around. His voice work in Transformers as Megatron is just awesome. I mean you hear him talk and then you hear him as Megatron. How the hell can that be the same guy? I'll tell you why...read the beginning of my post again.

Sorry Thor, I'm just not your biggest fan. :(

On another note, the plot of The Avengers seems to be swirling around the idea of Loki gaining control over Bruce/The Hulk and using him for his own dirty deeds. From what I read The Incredible Hulk film with Norton ended in a manor that either the film could be returned to and you feel that Bruce has learned to control his ability or it ends in a way that sets up for The Avengers. The director on that film has been back and forth on a sequel, but recently did say Norton was contracted for a second film.

So we can all hope at the ending of the day, Marvel extends a little more money Norton's way and we have a complete Avengers film. The last thing I want is them pulling a Jim Rhodes in Iron Man swap-a-roo.

And lastly, did you guys know that Lou Ferrigno is signed on to do the voice of The Hulk?

yeh the Rhodes swap was... dissapointing i guess. But Chedale is a pretty sound actor!

well... only a year to wait now till Thor hits cinema's and July 2011 for Captain America.

i really do hope that Norton does sign up for the Avengers movie. as you mentioned the re-casting of Rhodes in Iron Man 2 was a shame, let alone a potentional key member of the Avengers lineup being re-cast.

A lot of people really do feel that Norton would do it as he is actually signed on for the Hulk sequel. I mean even if it was a small cameo that would make all the difference in the film. I know DC is trying for a Justice League movie somewhere down the line and I really hope Marvel doesn't drop the ball.

As much as I like Eric Banna, Edward Norton was a far better Bruce Banner and the reboot in 2008 was so much more enjoyable then the 2003 flick.

I do credit Don Cheadle as being in my personal opinion a better actor, but that still doesn't cross out Terrence Howard as being good either. This may be wrong, but articles and interviews make it seem more like Terrence Howard only took the role for the money and received the highest salary of the entire cast from the film despite the fact that Favreau said he didn't enjoy working with him at all during filming. Don Cheadle on the other hand said he was skeptical at first about the role. He claims that he is a comic fan, but hasn't done a superhero flick due to the lack of black superheros. Once he was told/found out that Rhodes/War Machine was indeed a black hero, he embraced and accepted the role and it seems his presence was more enjoyable during filming by the director and cast.
