Guide & Road Map are a Work In Progress

Road Map

- Estimated achievement difficulty: 4/10
- Approximate time: 20-25 hours
- Offline: 1000 http://www.xbox360achievements.org/forum/../images/misc/g-icon.gif
- Online: 0 http://www.xbox360achievements.org/forum/../images/misc/g-icon.gif
- Missable Achievements: All the collectible achievements, Boob Tube, Medical Opinions, Drink 'Em Both Up, Child of the Elder God, Heavy Metal, Iron Horse, Meet the Deadline, An Idyllic Small Town, Gunless Wonder (most of which though, except Drink 'Em Both Up) can be simply achieved by loading up chapters/episodes.
- Minimum number of playthroughs needed: 2
- Glitched achievements: None as far as we know.

Whatever way you tackle it, Alan Wake is a two playthrough minimum game. You're best going for the following order though:

Step 1 - First playthrough

It's an awkward on this because I want to recommend that you enjoy the experience and its surprises on the first playthrough, because the collectibles guide does contain the odd spoiler (although nothing major as long as you don't get ahead of yourself.). If that's not an option, the first playthrough is best done on normal, collecting all 291 collectibles, switching weapons and making sure you don't miss any of the missable achievements (Boob Tube, Medical Opinions, Drink 'Em Both Up).

Remember to pick up the Heavy Metal and Iron Horse achievements in chapter 3 for defeating the Bulldozer and the Steam Engine respectively.

Step 2 - Picking up miscellaneous achievements

It's a good time to head back and pick up the three/four miscellaneous achievements here: Meet the Deadline, An Idyllic Small Town (if you missed it on the first time through), Child of the Elder God, Gunless Wonder. Simply load up the relevant chapters, follow the guide and away you go.

Step 3 - Nightmare playthrough

By this time you should just have the Nightmare difficulty achievement and the Nightmare manuscript pages achievements left. Simple stuff. You might have a few weapon achievements left as well, dependent on how you played your first playthrough.

Departure - 40 http://www.xbox360achievements.org/forum/../images/site/gp-g.jpg
Complete the game on Normal difficulty.

Complete the game on normal difficulty. There are around 10-12 hours of gameplay. Normal isn't particularly hard as there are a slew of batteries and ammunition situated all around. Save flashbangs and the flaregun for multiple Taken together in a group (3 or 4) otherwise it's a waste.

Alan, Wake Up -50 http://www.xbox360achievements.org/forum/../images/site/gp-g.jpg
Complete the game on Nightmare difficulty.

In order to unlock "Nightmare" difficulty, you need to have beaten the game once. Nightmare mode means enemies are stronger - they take more hits (4 rather than 2) - and supplies are rather more limited than normal. Not massively difficult, just make sure every shot counts, you use flares to help subvert danger but only when absolutely necessary. Dodge a lot, keep on your toes and you'll be alright. A good tactic is to just run... run, run and run a bit more. Supply drops are always worth going after, but don't bother saving this playthrough to do your collectibles because frankly, there aren't enough supplies.A good tip is to use the stun torch move - where you briefly catch them with your boosted flashlight - to make sure the Taken never get too close.

If It Flies, It Burns - 20 http://www.xbox360achievements.org/forum/../images/site/gp-g.jpg
Burn 1,000 birds.

There is a good chance that you can get this in an entire playthrough of the game. I managed to pass the 1,000 mark in the closing hours of the game. My advice, don't run off from the birds, stick around and try to take them all out. If that fails and you don't make it by the end, simply load up the end of episode 2, where the birds are attacking Barry in the house, and just rinse and repeat. Or you could easily do the bird attack at the end of episode 2 and then restart checkpoint to kill them all again. If you're doing 2 playthroughs though (Normal and Nightmare), then this should be easy anyway.

Good tactics? Obviously the boosted torch is effective, but so is a direct hit with the flaregun or a quick flare when they are near-by.

They're Heeeeeere! - 20 http://www.xbox360achievements.org/forum/../images/site/gp-g.jpg
Inanimate objects shouldn't move of their own accord. Put a stop to this affront, oh, say, 20 times.

You'll definitely pick this up whilst playing the game. The poltergeist controlled objects don't start till the railway bridge area on episode 3 so be patient. When they're in the air, just line them up and boost them with the torch. Nice and easy.

The Six-Gun Scribe - 20 http://www.xbox360achievements.org/forum/../images/site/gp-g.jpg
Defeat 100 Taken with the revolver.

Take the torch... weaken the Taken. Shoot with the revolver. Rinse and repeat 100 times. Easy and definitely possible to pick up in one playthrough. Two shots per standard Taken and about 4 per beefy Taken (on normal).

http://tiles.xbox.com/tiles/2p/mM/0oCLiGJhbC9DCxt0GltTWTA1L2FjaC8wLzE3AAAAAOfn5-2jmcY=.jpg
Taken Season - 20 http://www.xbox360achievements.org/forum/../images/site/gp-g.jpg
Defeat 50 Taken with the hunting rifle.

The hunting rifle doesn't come round that often and whilst this is possible to get in one playthrough - quite easily - my advice is don't sit on the ammo waiting to use it against the bigger Taken. Use it straight away and start racking up those kills.

Best place for a hunting rifle? Episode 5 - Before the church steps assault, is easily the best place. You can kill, reload checkpoint, rinse and repeat and all your kills carry across.

http://tiles.xbox.com/tiles/1I/2r/0YCLiGJhbC9MCxt0GltTWTA1L2FjaC8wLzE4AAAAAOfn5-6Ejcg=.jpg
It's Not Just a Typewriter Brand - 20 http://www.xbox360achievements.org/forum/../images/site/gp-g.jpg
Defeat 50 Taken with a shotgun.

The same as the hunting rifle this one, except ammo and shotguns are more often found than the hunting rifle. It's pretty much one shot kills for most things if you're close enough. Remember to whittle away at that dark presence first. Don't waste ammo either... if you can, try and get a two-for-one shot once in a while.

What Light Through Yonder Window - 20 http://www.xbox360achievements.org/forum/../images/site/gp-g.jpg
Defeat 50 Taken with the flaregun, the way Shakespeare intended.

Take the flaregun, get a load of them coming at you and then hit one of them, killing them all. You should be getting at least 3 per shot. Ammo is super rare for this one, but 50 is easy so long as you get 3 or 4 in every shot.

http://tiles.xbox.com/tiles/hp/j1/04CLiGJhbC81Cxt0GltTWTA1L2FjaC8wLzFBAAAAAOfn5-zamJo=.jpg
Thunder and Lightning - 20 http://www.xbox360achievements.org/forum/../images/site/gp-g.jpg
Defeat 50 Taken with flashbang grenades.

One of the easiest weapon achievements this, thanks to the mid-point of episode 3. This is the first time you pick them up and it's great because you only have flashbangs and they throw loads at you and there are loads to pick up. It's quite possible to get this one before episode 3 ends. Be concise though, don't bother throwing unless you get 3 kills at an absolute minimum. If all else fails there, there are plenty of opportunities throughout the rest of the game to get them: including the helicopter showdown and the rock stage defense.

http://tiles.xbox.com/tiles/M5/HU/0YCLiGJhbC82Cxt0GltTWTA1L2FjaC8wLzFCAAAAAOfn5-77kS8=.jpg
Collateral Carnage - 20 http://www.xbox360achievements.org/forum/../images/site/gp-g.jpg
Defeat 20 Taken with indirect means.

Indirect means to kill a Taken with either electricity, explosive canisters, water, or whatever. So long as you haven't taken the final shot, but YOU kill them, it works. The train yard is good for that. Get them close to the gas canisters and shoot them and not the Taken. Otherwise, there is an electric fence in the Power Station towards the end of the game. Use the torch to push them into it.

Come One, Come All -10 http://www.xbox360achievements.org/forum/../images/site/gp-g.jpg
Kill four Taken with a single shot from the flaregun.

The best opportunity for this comes later on in the game in all honesty. The penultimate chapter where you have to hold off the Taken whilst the lift comes down (at the docks). It's a typical and cliched scene and they come thick and fast. One well placed flare and you can take out a good 4 or 5 without breaking a sweat.

Sound and Fury - 10 http://www.xbox360achievements.org/forum/../images/site/gp-g.jpg
Kill four Taken with a single flashbang.

Episode 3, after breaking out the radio station and making your way to the first safe haven, slightly on from there there will be a shack with three light sources. Go inside the shack and an ambush will commence, throw it outside when they show up and you should get 4 at a very minimum. There are plenty of places to get this throughout though, so fear not if you miss out here.

Other opportunities exist later on, better ones as well, just make sure you get them all pretty close to you, hold them off with the torch and then drop a flashbang. BAN! Achievements unlocked.

Two For the Price of One -10 http://www.xbox360achievements.org/forum/../images/site/gp-g.jpg
Kill two Taken with a single shotgun blast.

I found this quite easy to pull off with the final encounter with Stuckey in episode 1, partly because of the flat ground and the chance to filter them down a thin path. Remember to break their dark presence shields first and then when you have them lined up, pull the trigger. I've played the first episode 3 times now and every time I've got the achievement at this exact point. Use your torch to stun them if needs be, but make sure they're in line before pulling the trigger.

Right of Way - 10 http://www.xbox360achievements.org/forum/../images/site/gp-g.jpg
Drive over 15 Taken.

This is super easy. It's even possible to do the first time you get in the car - the end of episode 2. Just drive round in circles, use the A boost on the headlights and when the dark presence is defeated, just run them over. I managed to get it on the first bit by just veering off the main road when the jack-knifed truck blocks the road. It's so easy because you can be going like 5 mph and still kill them.

Survive the bulldozer attack.

During episode 3 Alan will have an untimely fight with a dark presence controlled Bulldozer. Now this makes the miscellaneous AND missable achievements category because you can simply run past it, rather than fighting it. Whatever you do, stand up like the man that Alan is and take that beast down. Whether you destroy it with a few flares/flaregun or general hard-assery with the boosted torch is up to you. Just don't opt for the easy way out... his name is Alan for a reason...

When you get to the Ghost Town towards the end of episode 3 you will be attacked by a steam engine.

The dark presence controlled locomotive is actually a missable achievement it turns out and so before you pick up the key and go through the door, destroy the locomotive's parts with the torch/flaregun/flare/flash grenades.

Note: This is after the train yard so don't panic that you've missed it once you leave that area.

Have a rock'n'roll moment without dropping to a low health state.

At the end of episode 4, there will be a showdown on the Anderson's stage where Taken will come by the boatload. I will make a video of this one, but it's relatively easy if you play it smart - stay in the light when Barry flicks it on, use flares, watch your flanks, use flashbangs, etc.

mrevildoer writes:

"Just a heads up with the 'Child of Elder God' achievement, whenever Barry turns that light on at center stage (I think he does it twice) if you step into it you get a checkpoint like any other safe zone. If for some reason you drop to low health after, you can just reload the checkpoint and the cheevo will still pop.

I did this last night, and effectively dividing the battle into thirds makes it really easy."

Drink 'Em Both Up - 10 http://www.xbox360achievements.org/forum/../images/site/gp-g.jpg
Put de lime in de coconut twice.

This is a two part misseable achievement. In order to get this, you must use the juke box twice in the game, at two totally differing sections.

The first time you will enter the diner is early on in Episode 1, after Alan and Alice get off the Ferry. The Andersens will be be sat near the juke box and after some banter, a kick of the machine and some more banter, the music will play.

The second part of this achievement is much later on in the game, episode 5 to be precise, when you have to traipse through Bright Falls at night with the Sheriff. After opening the gate and reaching the main road with the possessed float. Head left and before you head off that road, there is a diner on the left hand side of the road. In the corner. It's the same diner as in episode 1. Simply go in, switch it on and the achievements should unlock. No idea as to whether you can get it in two different playthroughs, that currently is unknown, so make sure you grab it the first time through.

Save yourself with a flare.

For a while I wondered what this achievement was, having used many flares but not having it pop. It actually means, save yourself with a flare when you are in a "low health state" - so when the screen is black and white essentially and you are under a third of health. When that happens, bust out a flare with the RB and net yourself this achievement.

There is a good chance that this achievement may rely on the fact that you just need to hold the flare, as many have reported that it has unlocked with full health. So upon pulling the flare out with the RB, hold the button.

Perform a cinematic dodge 20 times.

A cinematic dodge is when you press LB and a direction on the left analogue stick at the same time a Taken swings for you. The camera will slow down and Alan will narrowly miss the attack. These are unbelievably easy to pull off. If you want, you can kill off two of three Taken when they spawn and do this on the one left over. Truth be told, you'll get it naturally in one playthrough. If by some chance you haven't, use one straggler of a Taken to get it on.

An Idyllic Small Town - 30 http://www.xbox360achievements.org/forum/../images/site/gp-g.jpg
Make it through "Night Life in Bright Falls" in one go without dying or restarting even once.

Rather than make a video for this one, I'm going to give a brief rundown of potential sticky parts and what to do. Honestly, you shouldn't need this, it's easy.

If you're loading up an episode to do it, it's episode 5, the first chapter, "Night Life in Bright Falls." If you prepare and don't waste powerful weapons, then there aren't many tricky moments. The two potential tricky spots are:

The church defence and the helicopter defence. One mid mission and one at the end. In order to unlock the achievement you must finish it, from the police station to the helicopter, without dying or restarting. Just make sure you load up on all the equipment before you move to close to Sarah and Barry. Otherwise, the Taken come. If you scavenge the lot before hand of both areas, it should be easy.

The church - the best way to do this is the hunting rifle and flash grenade combo on the left hand steps (with your back to the church). It should be easy as Sarah will be on hand to help out.

The helicopter - you're on your own here. Just use the flash grenades wisely, shoot the gan canisters to save flash grenades, and try to turn on the lights whenever possible. Stay on the pad as well. If you stick to that, you'll do fine.

Oh, do them on normal.

Gunless Wonder - 30 http://www.xbox360achievements.org/forum/../images/site/gp-g.jpg
Make it to Cauldron Lake without firing a single shot in "On the Road to Cauldron Lake."

Load up the first chapter in episode 6 to tackle this badboy. You essentially have to flare and flashbang it all the way... NO flaregun, but do use the car and its headlights where possible. Death is pretty much a given as well, so don't worry about that.

So in short, use no weapon that requires you to pull the right trigger.

Knock over five can pyramids.

There are 12 can pyramids to knock over in all, but you only have to knock over 5 for the achievement. Choose from this list below as to which 5 you want to knock over. To knock over, you of course simply have to shoot them... that's it.

1. Episode 1 – There is a stack on the fence to the right as soon as you get a gun and torch for the first time.

2. Episode 1 – After doing the “log puzzle” in the second part of the logging yard (after the river), there is a can pyramid at the top of the old stairs.

3. In Episode 2, after defending Lover’s Peak and falling down, then crossing through the bear trap infested woods, before crossing the next log crossing, turn around and walk to the cliff face overlooking the mill. It’s there on top of a barrel.

4. After getting the car in episode 2 towards the end, there will be a truck forked in the middle of the road, head left around it and when you come to the next truck, head left again. You’ll then see a bright light up ahead, head towards it and the pyramid is on the table ahead.

5. Episode 3, after escaping the radio station and getting to the first safe haven (with a generator), slightly further up the path is a shack with three lights surrounding it. In the farthest shack there is a can pyramid. Shoot it down for the achievement.

6. Towards the end of episode 3, after the silver mine and the cable car across the valley that crashes. It’s on the cable car station on the side that you’re travelling to.

7. Episode 4, in the gardens, after defeating the orderly and destroying a wheelbarrow and double gate with light, it’s on the wall by manuscript #63.

8. In episode 4 after you bash the barn door with the Viking ship (after the stage showdown), there are two pieces of hanging wire. There is one on the left of the second piece on a cylindrical wooden cable reel.

9. At the end of the floodgate puzzle in episode 5.

Iron Horse actually could be missable if it's the one at the end of the ghost town. You're able to grab the key and open the door without defeating the steam engine. I think the bulldozer can be avoided too (you can just open the gate at the far end).

an easy tip i did to knock out all the birds. on the mission were Barry is inside the house trapped by the birds. you will get about 300 kills. once Alan says, Ok Barry they are all gone, reload the checkpoint. rinse an repeat. You can do this with all the achievement that require you to kill with a certain weapon. the game autosaves kills an collectibles.

So far the Nightmare manuscripts seem to be pretty much directly along the path. I've only done the first episode, but the first is before the first logging area near the beginning, the second is right on the path a fair bit on, and the third is on the back door of the gas station.

Yes if you play on hard you unlock the hard and normal achievement. But you need 2 playthrough because you can only choose the normal or hard difficulty on the first playthrough. Nightmare difficulty is unlock once you beat the once

Child of the Elder God - 10 http://www.xbox360achievements.org/forum/../images/site/gp-g.jpg
Have a rock'n'roll moment without dropping to a low health state.

At the end of episode, there will be a showdown on the Anderson's stage where Taken will come by the boatload. I will make a video of this one, but it's relatively easy if you play it smart - use the light, use flares, watch your flanks, use flashbangs, etc.You forgot to specify the number of Chapter. It's number 4.

At the beginning of episode 4 you'll be in Hartman's lodge and things happen and you get left alone in Hartman's office. Click on the tape player and listen to Alice's meetings with Dr Hartman. Notice it says recordings, yes, there are multiple. 3 in fact. I will create a video either way.

Once you are left alone you have to get the key to go to the office and the recordings aren't in the office they're in the room to your left as you head towards the office.

Probably a stupid question but I wanted to check, I've finished the game on Hard with about 80% of the Manuscript pages. When I do my Nightmare playthrough will the missing pages I pick up on this playthrough that aren't Nightmare specific count towards the "Picking Up After Yourself" achievement?

BTW, great guide Webb! Cheers for the help!

i dont think the nightmare ones count towards the normal achievement, i aint done it but the wording on the achievement is rather strict.

when i can im going to chapter select the pages and coffee ive missed. since ive completed nightmare ill chapter reload on that aswell.

Quick question regarding nightmare mode.

Can you replay the chapters and use nightmare to get the game completion, ort do you need to start a new one again?

Also if you have found the manuscripts, in normal, do you have to find them again (seeing how its a new game?)

Lastly, on the last level there are two tin can pyramids.

No you don't need to pick them up again, you can read them at any time, even from the main menu once they're picked up

It means that you have to activate the jukebox in the diner in Chapter 1 (first time you enter it) and in Chapter 5 where you can enter it for the second time.

Don't know if it unlocks when you do it in 2 different playthroughts, i did it on one playthrough

for drink em both up i loaded a chapter to get the second one (as i missed it) and still got the achievement so i dont think it matters if you do them on different play throughs as long as you activate them both at some point you will get it

there is a manuscript in the very back of the diner anyway (chapter 5) so its not really missable if your going for all the achievements

"Collateral Carnage"

I got this achievement when I was walking around with the Sheriff and Barry shot a flare at the Taken in the doorway (this is just before you see him wearing his Christmas light outfit lol). Looks like Barry's kill counted as an "indirect" kill for me!

Hey awesome guide. Just a suggestion for you though, the kill x number of Taken with each weapon achievements can be farmed. Just get a few kills in an area with lots of enemies close to a checkpoint (I recommend Chapter 3; Ransom in the train yard).

Simply kill some taken, check stats, restart checkpoint. Rinse and repeat.

I used this method for all weapon kills and the 1000 birds.

Make it through "Night Life in Bright Falls" in one go without dying or restarting even once.

Rather than make a video for this one, I'm going to give a brief rundown of potential sticky parts and what to do. Honestly, you shouldn't need this, it's bloody easy.

If you're loading up an episode to do it, it's episode 5, the first chapter, "Night Life in Bright Falls." If you prepare and don't waste powerful weapons, then there aren't many tricky moments truth be told. The two potential tricky spots are:

The church defence and the helicopter defence. One mid mission and the other at the end. In order to unlock the achievement you must finish it, from the police station to the helicopter, without dying or restarting. Simple as.

In regards to the church defence and the helicopter defence; just make sure you load up on all the equipment before you move to close to Sarah and Barry.

Oh, and do them on normal... It's obvious, but hey, it needs to be said.

wait, you only need to survive up until you get in the helicopter? i played through all of episode five without dying up until i accidentally jumped off the edge at the floodgates X) and didn't get this achievement. is it glitched or can it only be earned via replay?

Yeah, i farmed them in Episode 3, where you have to disable to generator to get over the electronic fence. Its a good place to get those environmental kills, the car kills and the taken object kills as well.

Collectibles Spreadheet

I have recently created a spreadsheet from Webb's Walkthough (http://www.x360a.com/forum/showthread.php?t=227520). It tells you how many you have collected, how many you have left and generally just makes it much easier to mark off which ones you have you done. Unfortunatetly they are on different tabs which means you have to jump back and forward as you go but if you read three or four ahead on each one you shouldn't have any problems. I got all the way through and only missed one coffee thermos.

Click here for 2007 version or click on image to download (http://www.stmarkscentre.org/AlanWake.xlsx). If you need 2003 version (i.e.xls) click here. (http://www.stmarkscentre.org/AlanWakeOld.xls)

Chapter 3-2 when you cross the bridge there is a rifle on the other side. Episode 5 right before the church there is a rifle there. Episode 5 has the rifle easily available.

I think the weapon/kill achievements are very easy. I was able to get them all in one playthrough, by the end of episode 5. Which let me get the achievement for not firing 1 shot in episode 6, while collecting the collectibles. The only problem you'll have is the ambush site with the big spot light. But you can empty the rest of your flash bangs there and just use flares for the rest of the stage.

The guide didn't list it so I'd like to add a location of a can pyramid.

In Chapter 6 when you are making you're way to Cauldron Lake, you come to a closed gate you have to open. When you head inside the Scrapyard Office, you need to go upstairs to hit the switch to open it. To the right of the switch is a door that leads to a small porch with the cans on the railing.

Yup, just the same like ALONE IN THE DARK and SILENT HILL HOMECOMING.

Well Alone in the Dark had 1 challenging achievement , and that was for making every combo possible. I got it with out doing any of the waterbottle combos. But my friend john never got it, and he made every combo possible. As for Silent Hill Homecoming, some of the collectibles were a little hard to find, Hard would have been Hard if not for the UFO Blaster(The achievement weapon). But it was probably the best silent hill since 2.

As for the Child of the Elder God achievement. All you need to do is just not drop off in health, and stand next to Barry, that way they can only attack you from the front. If you get surrounded just use a flare. All you have to do is not get into low health. You only have to do this until the song ends. It's a timed event like the helicopter battle in Episode 5.

Just stand in the corner by Barry with the upgraded pump action shotty, and the upgraded flashlight. Nobody will every reach you, and can just Flare/flashbang it if they get close. Then when barry gets the light on run to it to heal, and get rid of the enemies. Once it's gone go back to the Barry corner. Just keep doing this until the Song is over and you will have this very easy achievement.

I had 42 bullets, 23 shotgun shells, 6 flashbangs, and 10 flares. At the end of the battle I had 38 bullets, 20 shotgun shells, 6 flashbangs, and 5 flares. I killed 5 enemies total in tha battle, and that was to buy time to get the upgraded flashlight and pump action shotty.

Funny that you mentioned it. I never got this achievement, hahaha. Stuck with only 970 G in Alone in the Dark. After that I was bored & tired to play it again. I can live with that, hehe.

Now I'm on my Nightmare runthrough. Still missing 1 chest too (29/30). I guess I'm gonna finish everything today.

This might be a stupid question but hopefully someone can answer me?

Im playing through just on Normal Difficulty and iam collecting all the manuscripts so i will get the achievement. But, you can not choose Nightmare difficulty through the Episode select screen, only Normal.
So does this mean when i start a New Game on Nightmare, will I have to find all 106 manuscripts again?
Or can i just find the 15 New Nightmare manuscripts and it will still save my other scripts from my Normal playthrough and give me the achievement??

Thanks to anyone that can answer my question.
(If you have to find every manuscript again on Nightmare, Then that SUCKS BIG BALLS)

YES!!! Just play one time on NORMAL difficulty and the second time on NIGHTMARE difficulty. That's what I'm doing right now. And don't worry if you still see them on your next walkthrough (ignore them), just keep tracking on the last 15 Nightmare Manuscripts.

I agree, I collected all collectibles on my normal playtrough and then used a guide to get all Nightmare mode manuscript pages.

Just do it this way.. you will make it alot easier for yourself since there are alot of collectibles and chests that are hidden and then when for example if you open a chest a big group of enemies comes etc..

Picking Up After Yourself - 30 http://www.xbox360achievements.org/forum/../images/site/gp-g.jpg
Find all of the manuscript pages in Normal mode.

There are (?) manuscript pages to collect in normal mode. Some are on the main path, others are off the beaten path. For a full list of where you can locate what, check out the collectibles thread here.

There are a total of 91 normal manuscripts. You can check which chapters you are missing them on in the manuscript menu by hitting :startbut:

Collector's Edition - 50 http://www.xbox360achievements.org/forum/../images/site/gp-g.jpg
Find all of the manuscript pages in the game, including the ones in Nightmare mode.

There are certain manuscript pages that are only available in Nightmare mode. There are only a handful per chapter, but you need to complete the game on Normal or Hard first to unlock this mode. For the guide on where to find these, check this thread out here.

Total of 15 nightmare difficulty manuscripts. They are labled with a specific icon in your manuscript menu, same as above.

KBF-FM -30 http://www.xbox360achievements.org/forum/../images/site/gp-g.jpg
Listen to all of the radio shows.

There are 11 radio shows dotted around Bright Falls. Turn them all on and net yourself an achievement. For a guide on where they are, check out this thread here.

If you miss one, you can check the start menu "extras" and access which ones you are missing. They only spread through the first 4 episodes.

Gunless Wonder - 30 http://www.xbox360achievements.org/forum/../images/site/gp-g.jpg
Make it to Cauldron Lake without firing a single shot in "On the Road to Cauldron Lake."

Video will be made. You essentially have to flare and flashbang it all the way... and use the car and its headlights of course.

A flare gun is also considered ammo. I personally missed this achievement using this. Though it may be obvious, some people might get confused (flare/flare gun). :)

Meet the Deadline - 30 http://www.xbox360achievements.org/forum/../images/site/gp-g.jpg
In "Mirror Peak," make it from the Coal Mine Museum to Cauldron Lake in 30 minutes.

Load up episode 3, part 2 (Mirror Peak) and dash from the beginning to the end in 30 minutes. Quite easy, so long as you just concentrate on moving forward quickly, regardless, I will make a video.

The starting point is actually after a phone call cut scene at the mine museum, not the beginning. You can reload checkpoints to reset the times if you screwed up and went the wrong direction or couldn't figure out where to go.

For a while I wondered what this achievement was, having used many flares but not having it pop. It actually means, save yourself with a flare when you are in a "low health state" - so when the screen is black and white essentially and you are under a third of health. When that happens, bust out a flare with the RB and net yourself this achievement.

Flare and flare guns are two different things. I personally at first was shooting the ground with a flare gun thinking that's what was meant by flare. Might clear it up a little for people who are just starting the game!

Boob Tube - 5 http://www.xbox360achievements.org/forum/../images/site/gp-g.jpg
See what's on TV.

There will be a TV to turn on in the night time scene of the Caldron Lake Lodge level (episode 4), just before you escape.

Video inbound, just in case, although it is hard to miss.

Right after you have to use a flare to demolish the two bear statues, go left and you'll see it hanging up. This is not the same TV that is upstairs. which you will pass a second time to start a generator.

Bright Falls Aficionado - 30 http://www.xbox360achievements.org/forum/../images/site/gp-g.jpg
Absorb every bit of local history and culture.

There are 25 pieces of local history and culture located around Bright Falls and they involve reading a sign of some sort which reveals some information about the town. For a complete list, check out this thread here.

At a couple locations, you must read multiple signs for it to count (as 1).

Hope that helps, just some things I noticed...I know you are doing a few videos but just in case someone wanted the info right now I threw in some descriptions. Some things are really obvious and nothing wrong with what you said, but some people may be confused if they read ahead too far (like the flare thing, as I was confused too as I didn't know there were just normal flares in the game).

Got mine at the anderson farm where fireworks killed taken.

Fairly certain, the earliest occurance being the sheriff's department one where you must read the two notices on the billboard. But maybe I read the ones that didn't count, and then read the ones that did right after. At the museum I read the one closest to the mine shaft that collapsed.

I don't mean you get 2 signs at 1 location though, like you won't get one, then get another for reading both. I was implying read both = get 1

And yes on the collectibles guide :)

I might have to go and test that one, because I only read the one in the police station I think :p

Awesome on the collectibles guide. I'll get everything sorted and in order there later.

Got a couple more videos that are uploading now for the guide. Then all I think that is left is the nightmare pages, which I'll just lift from the colour coded guide probably.

Really should! I had that level on for at least an hour, pausing, reloading checkpoints, and whatnot. I guess if you try again and are still concerned, pause when you get to checkpoints if you have to. Then when you come back, reload the checkpoint.

Just a heads up with the 'Child of Elder God' achievement, whenever Barry turns that light on at center stage (I think he does it twice) if you step into it you get a checkpoint like any other safe zone. If for some reason you drop to low health after, you can just reload the checkpoint and the cheevo will still pop.

I did this last night, and effectively dividing the battle into thirds makes it really easy.

There are two more pyramids of cans in Chapter 6, if you need them. Unfortunately, I can't remember where I just saw them -- I didn't shoot them (needed to) because I was going for the no shots fired achieve.

One is on a railing on a staircase - that much I can say. And I think the other is in one of the cabins on a second or third floor, also on a railing that you have to explore.

Dunno if it's been addressed here, I didn't read all the posts...

I got this while trying for the Child of the Elder God cheevo on the stage. It appears that when your buddy sets off the stage spark effects and it kills Taken that are too close to them, those kills count towards Collateral Carnage. I went in with only 5 indirect kills on my first play through.

Nice, one less cheeve to do.

Dunno is this was posted. You can pause the game while following the video guide and the timer will pause. This was handy from moving from checkpoint to checkpoint.

To save some time, ignore manuscripts.

I noticed that you must kill off all the baddies at the suspension bridge (both ahead and behind) like in the 3rd video for the checkpoint there to activate.

Additionally, you don't have to kill all the baddies in the old building after the floor drops out. Run back up the stairs, but keep in mind there's 2 guy's coming down from up top. Have a flare ready or a flash bang.

This also held true in the mine when the roof caves in and the baddies come out. Run past 'em and continue on.

Awesome guide dudes!

I think I can clarify a few things regarding this achievement (if no one else already has). For me, the achievement didn't unlock in the first playthrough, but it unlocked my second playthrough in episode 1.

So yes, the achievement tracks itself over several playthroughs.

I now also know why it didn't unlock in my first playthrough. You have to use the jukebox AFTER you had your encounter with lady in black, NOT BEFORE. I found that info in the collectible guide but it is missing here.

@Webb: Great guide as always, much appreciated! :-) Would you mind updating it with this new info?

Two things:

For the achievements to show I would recommend clearing your cache and recovering your gamertag. That seems to help. I personally and thankfully have never had that issue, but that is what I have read people saying.

As for it not showing on your completed games list. Due to there being DLC it won't show unless you do all the DLC as well. They don't recognize a game as complete unless you have every available achievement.

So... Am I aloud to die or not to get this achievement?

Are difficulty achievement playthroughs stackable? For example, my first playthrough will be in Normal and my second on Nightmare. After completing it on Nightmare, will I get the Hard achievement playthough?

Thanks.

Thanks for the guide :D

Btw, the "Drink 'Em Both Up" Achievement works even if you activate the Machine on different playthroughs.

I played through the game on normal and forgot the second press in Episode 5. After finishing Ep6 I loaded Episode 5 and went into the Diner and presed it and the Cheevo still popped.

Cheers

Thank for the guide.

When you say 20 hours is that for the complete 1000/1000. Or that include the DLC?

I have all 1500/1500 now and I would say it not as easy as this guide makes out not by a long way.

IMO 7.5-8/10 achv difficulty overall (including the DLC). 4/10 is very misleading to anyone who might buy it thinking its easy GS several achvs are just not that easy at all.

Hi!

Noticed that Alan Wake contained a lot of missable achievements, isn't there like a chapter select in the game? And if that's the case, are there any achievements which STILL are missable?

maybe worth adding to the guide

on 1st playthrough, note at end of each chapter, how many thermos's got. This way, at least you can have some idea later on how many you are missing in each chapter and eventually where that last one is!

You could try to find a cheap copy of the strategy guide. It has screenshots of exactly where most of the collectibles are located. That's what I used in my 100% playthrough. Helped immensely.

I second that-great guide. This game is a bargain at its present on demand sale price with both dlcs reduced too-get the lot for under Ģ10 or $15.I already had the main game but was happy to see the dlcs reduced so snapped 'em up.
