Introduction: Alan Wake has many collectible related achievements. It will require two playthroughs. There are many misable achievvements, though you have 2 tries at them and can replay episodes. Overall it's achievements are spread nicely, the combat associated ones being easiest. You can reload checkpoints and the stats will still be saved.

Step 1: Normal Playthrough:

This is going to be your longest playthrough. You will be collecing everything but 15 of the collectibles on this playthrough, as well as watching all cut scenes and generally finding your way around the game. You should have over 700 points by the end of this playthough if everything goes according to plan.

Click HERE (http://www.xbox360achievements.org/forum/showthread.php?t=230155) and follow this collectibles guide. It also points out all missable achievements

Step 2: Nightmare Playthrough:

This mode is more about survival, as enemies are stronger and you die a lot faster. Use the tips associated with the achiements for completing it on this setting for more details. Try to pick up any missed collectibles (though you shouldn't have missed any). You also need to find 15 new collectibles that now appear in the game. Those as well, are located in the guide posted above. Even though this run through is harder, it will be a lot shorter as you know your way around, are skipping cut scenes, and because you'll be running for your life instead of fighting half of the time. Enjoy.

Step 3: Replay Chapters If Needed:

You should have all of the achievements by now. If not reload the episodes associated with the achievements on normal.

Conclusion

The best way to play is all at once, beat the game and then beat it again. There will be additional episodes added for DLC in the future.

See what's on TV.

This is a missable achievement. It is located in Episode 4 (Cauldron Lake Lodge).

Once running to escape the clinic from the darkness, you will find yourself in front of two bear statues blocking your path. Light of the flare to make them vanish. Turn left into the next room. You’ll see a television hanging. Turn it on for the “Boob Tube” achievement”.

http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/achievements/476/s7.jpgHeavy Metal 10 http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/site/gp-g.jpg
Survive the bulldozer attack.

This is a missable achievement. You have to destroy the bulldozer that is overtaken by the Darkness. It is located in Episode 3. Though the description does just say survive, it doesn't mean to run. As you wait to open a gate, it will be attacking. You have to shine your flashlight on it or use other forms of light. You will notice when you shine your flashlight at it, there is a white diameter of light that slowly decreases. You will want this depleted. If you are having a hard time, you also can run past the gate you open where the bulldozer can't get you, and elimate it from that position (running in and back to that spot when it's after you).

http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/achievements/476/s8.jpgIron Horse 10 http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/site/gp-g.jpg
Encounter a steam engine.

This is a missable achievement. You will face the steam engine late in Episode 3. At the ghost town, you'll make your way up through some train tracks. This battle is very similar to any other poltergeist enemy you've faced before. You have to destroy it, not just encounter it.

http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/achievements/476/s9.jpgWheels Within Wheels 20 http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/site/gp-g.jpg
Meet the kidnapper.

This is story related. You will get it upon completing Episode 3.

http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/achievements/476/s10.jpgMedical Opinions 10 http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/site/gp-g.jpg
Listen to Hartman's recordings.

This is a missable achievement. The recorder is in the Cauldron Lake Lodge during Chapter 4. You will have access to the room containing it once you obtain keys. It will be in the locked hallway, with some collectibles. If you follow the collectible guide you'll see it either way. Press the button and listen 2 times. Upon the third press, you will gain the achievement.

http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/achievements/476/s11.jpgChild of the Elder God 10 http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/site/gp-g.jpg
Have a rock'n'roll moment without dropping to a low health state.

This is a missable achievement. During Episode 4 (The Anderson Farm), you will be on a big stage with Barry. The Taken enemies will be swarming the front of the stage. You cannot go into the state of health that makes your screen black and white during this battle. It's not too long of a battle, and you'll have tons of ammo. You should use flares if your health gets low. This it not a timed event, you must kill everything.

http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/achievements/476/s12.jpgPerchance to Dream 20 http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/site/gp-g.jpg
Take a moment to reflect on past events.

This is story related. You'l get this at the end of Episode 4.

http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/achievements/476/s13.jpgDrink 'Em Both Up 10 http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/site/gp-g.jpg
Put de lime in de coconut twice.

This is a missable achievement. You must use play the juke box at the diner at two different points in the game. If you are following the collectibles guide, it is listed so that you don't miss it.

1. Episode 1: When you meet Rose in the Diner, you'll have a request by someone to turn the juke box on. Make sure you play it before leaving the diner.
2. Episode 5: Early on in this episode, you'll see the diner again to your left on the main street as you follow the sheriff around. Go inside and play it again.

http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/achievements/476/s14.jpgGatekeeper 10 http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/site/gp-g.jpg
Cut the power to the transformer yard.

This is story related. You get this for completing an easy objective in Episode 5.

http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/achievements/476/s15.jpgThe Lady of the Light 20 http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/site/gp-g.jpg
Discover the secret she guards.

This is story related. You will get this in Episode 5.

http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/achievements/476/s16.jpgTornado Wrangler 20 http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/site/gp-g.jpg
Defeat the tornado.

This is story related. You will get this near the final moments of the game in Episode 6. Get close enough and shoot flares into it.

http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/achievements/476/s17.jpgDeparture 40 http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/site/gp-g.jpg
Complete the game on Normal difficulty.

This difficulty should be your primary experience for Alan Wake. You will be obtaining almost all collectibles and achievements here. You must beat the game on this mode (or hard) to unlock Nightmare mode.

http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/achievements/476/s18.jpgHardboiled Writer 40 http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/site/gp-g.jpg
Complete the game on Hard difficulty.

Once you beat the game on normal, there really is no reason to play this difficulty. The Nightmare mode grants you this achievement as well.

http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/achievements/476/s19.jpgAlan, Wake Up 50 http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/site/gp-g.jpg
Complete the game on Nightmare difficulty

This may cause a few to struggle, but can be accomplished with patience, trial and error, and level familiarity. This experience will be faster than your first time you beat the game. You will only have to collect 15 manuscripts associated with this difficulty (as well as anything else you may have missed). The enemies not only take more firepower to take down, they also take more light to break their darkness. Also you will be hit die in very few hits. I will provide some tips, that may or may not help, depending highly on how you play.

Ammo: It will be more scarce, as well as enemies requiring more used against them. Try your best to avoid all combat situations that you can. If you find ammo and you're full, if not too far after you are attacked, run back. Save flares and flashbangs only when you have died and think it would be best to use them at that point. Headshots is not a factor in this game, so always aim in the middle of their bodies.
Supply Crates: These can be helpful in some cases, but many times you will be attacked while trying to grab them. In fact, sometimes you'll use more supplies getting to them, and realize you did all of it for some batteries you were full on. Check the collectibles guide (it describes what each crate contains) if you want to see if it's worth it.
Checkpoints/Safe Havens: This is where the game becomes more of a survival horror. Do your best to run in every encounter you face. Head towards the light, dodging heavily and running. When you get slow from being tired, turn around and shine your light at them as you walk backwards. You won't believe how many enemy encounters you can avoid by running. Flares may have been something you shrugged away in normal, but here you will love finding them. If it's a long run, light a flare, and let go of the button to drop it. Now you have some time! This also works when at a generator and needing to start it for a Safe Haven.
Reloading: If you miss with your gun a lot, or think the situation you encountered could have been handled better, just reload your checkpoint.

Good luck!

http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/achievements/476/s20.jpgIf It Flies, It Burns 20 http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/site/gp-g.jpg
Burn 1,000 birds.

This seems like a lot of birds, but they fly in flocks. Sometimes you'll see a bird on a fence, and it'll fly away. These aren't birds you can burn. The specific birds are controlled by the darkness, and swarm you. You may or may not get this in both of your playthroughs. Your best bet is in Episode 2 at the end. You will have to fend off birds at the cabin. You can burn around 250 pretty easily by firing flares at them. Once you tell Barry everythings clear, reload your checkpoint.

http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/achievements/476/s21.jpgThey're Heeeeeere! 20 http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/site/gp-g.jpg
Inanimate objects shouldn't move of their own accord. Put a stop to this affront, oh, say, 20 times

I would almost consider this story related. There are many times you must kill poltergeists. Sometimes even the gates you have to destroy with light will count. It would have been more of an achievement to have killed less than 20. That's how easy it is!

http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/achievements/476/s22.jpgThe Six-Gun Scribe 20 http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/site/gp-g.jpg
Defeat 100 Taken with the revolver.

Since this is your main gun, you should end up getting this without trying. If you're really concerned about getting it quick, at any time you can reload your checkpoints and fight the enemies over again. The kill stats will save right after a kill, regardless of death or reload.

http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/achievements/476/s23.jpgTaken Season 20 http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/site/gp-g.jpg
Defeat 50 Taken with the hunting rifle.

You may or may not get this by the end of the game. You normally have a choice between this or a shotgun, so if you use the shotgun more you probably won't get many kills. If you're really concerned about getting it quick, at any time you can reload your checkpoints and fight the enemies over again. The kill stats will save right after a kill, regardless of death or reload. (A good idea is when you pick up the rifle or shotgun, use it until it's out. A lot of times you'll have full ammo with one, and find the other with ammo around it. Also the game treats guns with "use it or lose it". You lose these weapons at the end of episodes.

http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/achievements/476/s24.jpgIt's Not Just a Typewriter Brand 20 http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/site/gp-g.jpg
Defeat 50 Taken with a shotgun.

You may or may not get this by the end of the game. You normally have a choice between this or a hunting rifle, so if you use the rifle more you probably won't get many kills. If you're really concerned about getting it quick, at any time you can reload your checkpoints and fight the enemies over again. http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/achievements/476/s25.jpgWhat Light Through Yonder Window 20 http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/site/gp-g.jpg
Defeat 50 Taken with the flaregun, the way Shakespeare intended.

There isn't tons of flare ammo everywhere, but if you are opening all the Supply Chest collectibles, you will have a decent amount. You will want to save the flare gun for times when there are lots of enemies attacking you.
If you're really concerned about getting it quick, at any time you can reload your checkpoints and fight the enemies over again. The kill stats will save right after a kill, regardless of death or reload.

http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/achievements/476/s26.jpgThunder and Lightning 20 http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/site/gp-g.jpg
Defeat 50 Taken with flashbang grenades.

There will actually be a level only allowing you to use them for a while, and you'll normally kill groups of 3. You should get this with no real effort. If you're really concerned about getting it quick, at any time you can reload your checkpoints and fight the enemies over again. The kill stats will save right after a kill, regardless of death or reload.

http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/achievements/476/s27.jpgCollateral Carnage 20 http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/site/gp-g.jpg
Defeat 20 Taken with indirect means.

Indirect means you didn't shoot them when they died. There are a few ways to get these. Early on, you will see wires hanging with sparks coming out of them. You can lure the enemies into the. There are a few other ways, but the one you'll be using most is a red canister (not gas cans you see early on). They work simliar to flashbangs, but you have to shoot them and time it for an enemy to be close. Later in the game there are a lot of these set around, in moments you'll have a high enemy count on screen. Same as the other kill stats, reloading works for this too.

http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/achievements/476/s28.jpgCome One, Come All 10 http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/site/gp-g.jpg
Kill four Taken with a single shot from the flaregun.

Later in the game you will have plenty of oppurtunity, and will most likely get it without specifically aiming for it. When you see more than 3 enemies, try to stand still and group them up, then shoot.

http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/achievements/476/s29.jpgSound and Fury 10 http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/site/gp-g.jpg
Kill four Taken with a single flashbang.

This can be obtained not too long after you get flashbangs. There's a few times more than 3 enemies will swarm you, and when they do, throw the flashbang at your feet.

http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/achievements/476/s30.jpgTwo For the Price of One 10 http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/site/gp-g.jpg
Kill two Taken with a single shotgun blast.

This one can be a little tricky. You first have to break the darkness off of 2 seperate taken, then fire a shot that kills them both. Lining them up won't work, it has to be more of an angle since bullets don't penetrate th bodies completely. A good spot for this early on is in a specific shack. When you go inside, there is a shotgun and ammo next to it. Pick it up to trigger a bunch of enemies. Try to break the darkness off a few of them and attempt a shot. Reloading a checkpoint when you have a shotgun can help, since you don't always have one.

http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/achievements/476/s31.jpgBack! Back, I Say! 10 http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/site/gp-g.jpg
Save yourself with a flare.

You will have a flaregun early on, but that will not work for this achivement. You will eventually get flares that you can hold to ward off incoming enemies at the same time letting you gain a little health back. Hit the :rbbut: right when you see yourself sink into the black and white screen. You would get this eventually by not trying, especially in nightmare mode.

http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/achievements/476/s32.jpgFloat Like a Butterfly 15 http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/site/gp-g.jpg
Perform a cinematic dodge.

You will be taught how to dodge from the tutorial. Shortly after, you will get it once you complete your first dodge hitting the :lbbut: right when an enemy is swinging at you. (Remember to move in the direction opposite of the incoming weapon).

http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/achievements/476/s33.jpgMissed by a Mile 25 http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/site/gp-g.jpg
Perform a cinematic dodge 20 times.

You should get this with normal game play. If you're in a hurry to get the achievement, just keep dodging the same enemy, using the :lbbut: whenever they swing at you.

http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/achievements/476/s34.jpgEnergized! 10 http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/site/gp-g.jpg
Use 100 batteries.

Your flashlight will recharge on it's own, but in some situations you will need to press the :ybut: to restock it's energy faster to keep the enemies at bay. If you want this really fast, wait until you have stocked up on the maximum amount of batteries (20). Now hold :rtbut: while quickly hitting the :ybut: until you run out of batteries. Reload as much as you need until you get the achievement.

http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/achievements/476/s35.jpgLet There Be Light 10 http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/site/gp-g.jpg
Get a generator running.

Story related. You'll get this once you start your first generator. Press :bbut: to interact with it. You will have to press :abut: at the right moment (when the gear icon arrow is at the top green portion).

Knock over five can pyramids.

There are 12 total cans stacked like the achievement picture. The episodes have 2 each. They are very hard to notice because they blend in so much with the environment. To knock them over you must shoot them. You only need 5, so it should be a very hard achievement to miss as long as you follow the collectibles guide HERE. (http://www.xbox360achievements.org/forum/showthread.php?t=230155)

(Note: The last level has an achievement requiring you to

http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/achievements/476/s37.jpgMeet the Deadline 30 http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/site/gp-g.jpg
In "Mirror Peak," make it from the Coal Mine Museum to Cauldron Lake in 30 minutes.

This achievement is misable. Once you get to the mine museum in Episode 4, you will have a phone call, and the person on the other line is very impatient. From that point, you have 30 minutes to make it to the lake. You will see the lake sign, but the achievement unlocks when you get past the ruined buildings with the floor that colapses. Dying/reloading will reset the time to the checkpoint. You should be getting collectibles on your normal playthrough, so this will be easier on nightmare, since you'll be running for most battles anyways.

http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/achievements/476/s38.jpgAn Idyllic Small Town 30 http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/site/gp-g.jpg
Make it through "Night Life in Bright Falls" in one go without dying or restarting even once.

This achievement is misable (but you can replay the Episode). At the start of Episode 5 you will need to get to a helicopter without dying or reloading. It's not all that difficult. There are two major ambushes that happen to you. One is at the church, where you have to kill the enemies to continue. The other is at the helipad, and it's timed. Just keep putting flares down and throwing flashbangs until the helicopter is ready to take off.

http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/achievements/476/s39.jpgGunless Wonder 30 http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/site/gp-g.jpg
Make it to Cauldron Lake without firing a single shot in "On The Road to Cauldron Lake."

You must play almost the entire 6th episode without firing any bullets (flare gun included). Refrain from hitting :rtbut: unless you're in a car. If you accidently shoot anything, reload your checkpoint. Drive as much as you can, and use flares and flashbangs. Once you get to the lake feel free to use all your saved ammo for the tornado.

http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/achievements/476/s40.jpgRight of Way 10 http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/site/gp-g.jpg
Drive over 15 Taken

There will be a few times the game will let you drive around. You can ram the enemies with your vehicle. Reloading works for these kills as well if you want it right away, but you'll eventually get it if you run over every Taken you see.

http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/achievements/476/s41.jpgFinders Keepers 20 http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/site/gp-g.jpg

There are a total of 106 manuscripts, but only 91 one them can be found in normal or hard mode. Getting the original 91 will gain you this achievement. You can see which ones you have by looking in the menu under manuscripts. They appear even after you have collected them (if you replay an episode, or play on the next dificulty).

Tyger: You posted a guide? We're always playing the same games. If only I had found your guide sooner. Too bad all I have left is the idyllic town and nightmare achievements left.

I vote that this guide and the collectibles guide replace the current ones stickied.

Hello very nice guide, seems you have forgot the Carny achievement.

However thanks, it is present in your other topic. Now I can find the last one.

Any point? No is the answer. I won't lock your collectible guide - because mine is unfinished at the moment - but I am locking this. It's the same bloody guide *sigh*
