Does anybody know how long a Gamertag has to be inactive before they cancel/delete it to allow to be used by someone else?

They never "expire".

They never "expire".

And why would they?

edit: changing sides! although names should become available again, they cant delete the tag.

A solution would be that if the tag has been offline for like a year, the name becomes available again, and when that tag comes back online again, they can choose a different gamertag.

This would keep the tag around, and still give other people a chance to use a name they want but cant because someone just makes accounts to take names

Agreed & How could they

If you don't use your email for a certain amount of time microsoft cancels it... why can't they do it for a gamertag? heh... just wishful thinking i guess... you would still be able to use it offline but if you don't use it for a couple of years they should be able to reallow people to use it...

Because e-mail accounts are free, XBL Gamertags arent

^ Silver accounts are free and only take an email... and then name is becomes unavailable to anyone else because its silver and was made free... (but most names were gold at 1 point)

Are you meaning XBL gamertag or Bungie.net accounts, BNET accounts are the only one i know which expires. After a year of inactivity.

This sounds like a good idea. I'd love to have my old GT back. Come on, MS! Fix it! lol

What about a person in the army or something that wouldn't be able to go online for a year in extreme cases. There's many cases were people would get bent over by this "1-Year" policy. They had the tag before you, therefore it's theirs. Regardless of circumstances they shouldn't have it taken away from them...

They don't and shouldn't. Just because you want a tag doesn't mean it should become available. If someone made it, that tag is rightfully theirs.

Why does it matter? There must be more than a bazzilion different names to choose from. I doubt 0.000001% of combinations have been used. Surely there is something you would take a liking to in the other 99.999999%

Agreed. Someone "took" the gamertag I wanted to use, but it's not actually being used by a gold Live account. Balls!

I've seen loads Gamertags with 0 Gamerscore and an original xbox logo gamerpic

This is obviously a tag that is no longer used by anyone and as far as I'm concerned should be deleted and have the gamertag become available again

And some people do make loads of free Silver GTs just so people can not take the names, I am absolutely sure of this

If someone hasnt used there gamertag online for say... 2+ years, i think it should be reset so some else can use it.
and if by any chance they try to connect after its been reset they get a message telling them why they lost that gt and that they get to change it to somthing else.
The gamertag i want hasnt connected to xbl since Feb 2008. :(

I have to agree with this. Be a bit more forgiving with the timeframe though. 3+ years without Gold membership and the name becomes available.

The problem is, the majority of the 99.999% (and I am sure that figure is highly exaggerated considering the millions and millions of accounts) are names like 'xb6s2jdv' and '8dfh3sbcce2s'. Who the hell wants random letters and numbers as their gamertag?

That's a different story. If it was never used in the first place then it should be deleted. However, just because someone hasn't logged in for one, or even two years doesn't mean they should lose their tag. Like someone else said, what if they were off to Iraq? Not really their fault that they can't log in then.

What if the gamertag was

I'd be pretty hacked off if that was taken away from me.

The problem is if it's deleted off the HDD and a year later, they want to recover it, they won;t be able to because they won't know the gamertag.

It's unlikely, but it could happen.

if you used it then it wouldnt be because it would be active

if you never used it and just made it so no-one else could, well you probably wouldnt even notice when it got removed

That's the problem though. Microsoft can't tell why they haven't logged in, so they have no choice but to leave them alone.

And? they could easily write into the ToS that gamertags left unused for 2 years or so will be removed and the GT be available again

End of the day, if someone hasnt logged onto their account in 2 years they have probably

- Got rid of the Xbox Live/360
- Forgotten the details to recover and made a new 1
- Decided they no longer want the account

I can see no real reason why someone who wants their XBLive account wouldnt use it in 2 years or so

Same here...i used to play dozens of different MMO's before i got my Xbox 360 and I always used the name Nero Mystyra. When i went to make my gamertag one day, I found that someone took the name Nero Mystyra...which is such bullcrap man...it's a name i invented and I can't even use it lol

Some person that barely touches their Xbox took my name...and i was forced to put an extra "a" at the end of my name which looks LAME. I wish Microsoft could fix it somehow but i know they can't or won't.

I wish there was a way that after X amount of time those names became available. I would like to have my gamertag sans the x at the end, but of course, someone who's never logged onto Live or played any games has it.

So... say someone is an avid gamer. And that person thinks of a really unique gamertag that allows them to stand out online.

They like this gamertag a lot.

Then they or their wife or girlfriend, gets pregnant. Uh oh... life just became amazingly busy.

Now that person has to get a job, move to a new house... all of that good stuff.

Two years down the line. "Man, I feel like playing some Halo." So they go and purchase Halo X. Hook up their console, go to sign in...

Uh oh.

Obviously, this story is exaggerating. But in that instance, don't you think it would be rather annoying?

There can only be so many DARK LORD 9000s out there. If somebody already took that gamertag, then why should they lose it just because they haven't used it for a while?

Now, there is a possibility that it would be relatively easy for Microsoft to track silver accounts that have never been used, and delete them after a certain period of time. Kind of like a probation period, if the tag is unused for six months after creation, it gets deleted.

But removing somebody's tag just because they haven't used it for a while is a bad idea from my point of view.

Accounts that were made but never really used, sure, delete those and bring those gamertags back into the fold. For ones that were actually legitimately active at some point I think they should get a rather large grace period. 4 or 5 years of no activity.

Never expire. They just turn into a sliver account.

Gun-Nut

I'm not sure Gamertags should be deleted at all I mean even a Silver Account has uses but any old Xbox 1 Account that has still not been moved over should get deleted I mean come across a few names that just have the old Xbox Logo for a Gamerpicture and nothing else! I mean if those people where going to move to 360 they either created a new Gamertag in the end or are not planning on moving I mean its been 5 years since the 360 hit! and I doubt you would even need the 360 itself to sort out the profile online if you wanted to keep it.

Coxy x360a
08-25-2010, 10:33 AM
It would be cool, but its never gonna happen. No matter how long an account is inactive for, there is no reason to give it to someone else. Not 0.01% of the possible gamertags are taken, so I'm sure you can find something decent in the other 99.99%.

TakahashiDemon
08-25-2010, 10:44 AM
Its pretty much whoever gets the gamertag first gets to keep it, besides if they really did start deleting those who make a profile on xbox.com only, never using console, someone else will probably get it faster again.

If you really like "Cool Name", what's wrong with just having "Cool Name 1989" or "Cool Name x360a"? If someone else got it first it's obviously not that original a choice, but you can still use it. I just read the actual words of the tag, who cares if there's a 573 stuck at the end of it?

I wanted Jewbeard, but it was already taken so I took the suggested CuriousJewbeard instead...no skin off my nose, it's practically the same name. There's two "Mr Beefy"'s in my friends list :p
