The maverick talents of Johnny Depp could be facing their biggest challenge yet - as the big screen Doctor Who. (http://publisher.tv.bskyb.com/doctor-who)
The off-kilter star of Alice in Wonderland (http://movies.sky.com/movie/alice-in-wonderland-2010) and Edward Scissorhands (http://movies.sky.com/review/edward-scissorhands) is apparently in the frame to play the idiosyncratic Time Lord in an American adaptation of the BBC sci-fi drama.
The world's longest-running sci-fi series has already been made into films twice - 1965's Dr Who and the Daleks (http://movies.sky.com/review/dr-who-and-the-daleks) and Daleks' Invasion Earth: 2150 A.D. (http://movies.sky.com/review/daleks-invasion-earth-2150-ad) the following year.
The rumour of a US adaptation was originally raised when creator Russell T Davies and producer Julie Gardner left the successful BBC revival of the show for LA in 2008 in order to develop projects for BBC America.
"Bringing the Who franchise to the theatres is a regeneration for the character beyond the usual one," Davies said at the time.
"A theatrical release has a greater range and can reach millions of more people than just the fans. There will be brand new concepts and the film will be just as adventurous, scary and humorous as the television programme."
Internet rumours claim that Davies is writing the script.
Apparently the movie is set for 2012 release, although it's not entirely certain how this would fit in with Depp's current schedule, which includes more Pirates Of The Caribbean (http://www.xbox360achievements.org/review/pirates-of-the-caribbean-on-stranger-tides) movies.

He does have that aort of weird personality thing going on =P
Personally I think he'd be a good doctor if he pulled it off, but its a bit of a slap in the face for David Tennant =P

Johnny Depp as Doctor Who? I dunno if that'll work.
