I am looking into the Fallout series as a whole as I've never played any Fallout game (I know, I'm dumb). This game has really got me interested, do any of you know if you need to have played the pervious games to know the story or background?

no not really, just know that the world was in a nuclear war with china and it got blewed up and everybody went to live in bunkers called vaults...thats the overall background story in the fallout universe

go play fallout 3 though, its amazing

you could also play fallout 1 and 2 but the game play is not like FO3 or NV and I dont particularly like them, but they dont really hold any story importance as none of the games are direct sequels

2 however does have the Enclave, the main enemies of FO3 and also the begining of the New california republic...which I believe might be in NV

there are also some spinoff games...but I wouldnt pay attention to those as they arent good and sort of mess with the cannon of the world

In Short______
I would recommend playing FO3, possibly playing 1 and 2...or maybe just read the wiki
http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/Fallout_Wiki

but no there are no real direct story elements

any history imperative to the story of NV will be explained in the game itself, but i think those that have played 1 or all of the previous games will have a better understanding and better appreciation for the world of New Vegas or any fallout game for that matter...

but if you want a brief to extensive history lesson on the world of fallout you could always venture on over to the wiki page

Thanks for the help guys, I'll check out the Wiki for Fallout 1 & 2, and I guess I better get playing 3. Thanks!

The only games with related stories are Fallout 1 and 2, due to the fact that you play as a direct descendant. Other than that there is very little related story. All of the Fallout games can be played on their own as they all have somewhat unrelated stories.

Fallout 1 you needed to find a water chip to fix your vault's supply. This was a pain because there was a time limit. But the great part about the first two was that you could have as many party members as you could find (as long as you met their conditions).

Still, I think playing Fallout 1 & 2 is really worth it, even now (as I completed both games yet another time a few months ago). They don't look good anymore, but they're awesome in every other way. You just feel like you're there when you play them, and the awesome music makes it really feel like a wasteland.

I never played the first two but I do somewhat remember watching my brother play them a little...Weren't they kind of similar to Diablo?

Oh and to the original poster: Play Fallout 3...Its freaking awesome.

I have only played the fallout 3 and I loved the game and the music was great for it. I hope the new one is the same.

ive played all of them and the only one that would have anything to do with new vegas is 2 but they messed up real bad because i heard there is a casino called the lucky 13. in fallout 1 you come out of vault 13. in 2 you are the grandchild of "the vault dweller". but the problem is that the republic of new california is exactly in between vaults 13 and 15 so if the lucky 13 is built were vault 13 was then they screwed up and i guess moved the ncr.

but i would recomend playing 2 just so you get all the references because all the locations from 2 are going to be in NV plus the strip.

they are all totally worth playing specially 2 i had more fun on that one than i did with 3. more random encounters. example
"would you like to encounter some mobsters fighting off yakuzas?" that's some of that lmao shit right there.
