For those troubled by the hardcore achievement this is all you need to know:

Play as a melee.

That's it. That's all you need to know for now at least until we know some more about perks. Ammo will create a burden on your character so you might as well build a melee tank.

If you specialise in only a few guns and loot more cautiously I'm pretty sure the burden won't sting too much.

I would more likely say play as a sneaky survivalist with obviously repair and small guns.

I would recommend playing hardcore on the second playthrough then you will know what to do and what not to do. Find the unique weaponry and clothing. Do all quests in the route with least resistence and there will always be an easy way to get through it.

Also I heard from the writer of the strategy guide that Hardcore mode doesnt effect difficulty, so I asume you can play on easy + hardcore.

I think medicine is the bets one?

...or you can just be a stealth character? specialize in melee as well. but that gets boring IMO.

You could pretty much get through FO3 with the Hunting Rifle and Sneak Criticals alone, so I'm not sure why this'll be different. Just less cool shit in your inventory I suppose..

I always play normal then decide on what to play for hardcore.

I don't think anyone has the right to say what to do without playing the game on hardcore yet. After playing it at PAX I for one think that saving often and playing slow while specializing in one weapon type and selling items that aren't included int that type would be the smartest, but i didn't play on hardcore mode. I died pretty quickly and they didn't give me many stimpaks in the demo. Charging enemies head on doesn't seem like a smart move.

Same as all other plays... start with projectile then transition to energy as they become more plentiful while using all VATS, sneak, repair and weapon related perks. Hope there's an "unbreakable" exploit like in Anchorage.

According to the other thread with perks listed, here are a few that seem invaluable in hardcore mode:

Pack Rat
Required Character Level: 8
Required Attributes/Skills: Intelligence 5, Barter 70
You have learned the value of careful packing. Items with a weight of two or less weigh half as much for you.

Long Haul
Required Character Level: 12
Required Attributes/Skills: Endurance 6, Barter 70
You have learned how to pack mountains of gear for the long haul. Being over-encumbered no longer prevents you from using fast travel.

With the first perk, bullets should weigh half as much (I doubt they weigh more than 2 each), and with the second it should be easier to get back to a town and sell your shit if you have too much. I don't intend to play melee only, since you soak up a decent bit of damage that way and stimpacks take time to work.

We'll see in a week, I suppose. Very excited.

Yeah, but if I'm playing in Hardcore mode, it might actually be worth it so I can store more bullets. It kind of depends on how much ammo weighs.

barters good to have if you dont go around purposefully looking for money etc...

Money might not be an issue if you use the near infinite caps glitch. same one from the previous game.
I'm playing on hardcore and it's not so bad. most bullets weigh 0.08 each. having to eat and drink gives you a reason to collect the food and drink instead of just sucking down stimpacks.

my idea is to be silent but deadly (stealth, melee and small arms)

and no offense, but those that recommend playing hardcore on a second playthrew i think are cheating themselves out of the actual hardcore experience, of coarse if achievements is all you care about, who cares. me, i want a real hardcore experience, and playing threw on normal, then going threw a second time on hardcore isn't a full hardcore experience as you know what to expect to an extent, if that makes sense. (sorry for any redundancy, ive had a long week, and need sleep)

Still if you're a veteran of the first 2 Fallouts... you'll be just fine. Having dealt with ammo having weight before isnt hard to grasp once more. Yes being melee might work but you could go the other extreme (the more fun way I think) and not be stingy with your bullets. ;)

dunno if its because i havent played fallout in awhile but i cleared fallout 3 and all dlcs on hard but now im playing new vegas on normal and i seem to be dying quite abit , ( could be down to just starting off and lack of weapons etc.. )

i realy don't understand why everyone is so worried about hardcore .. i think u just should have some food and drink with you and play on Normal so u don't die to quickly by meele or gunshots ... if u have any probs just use fast travel ... so u can pick the perks u want cuz i doesn't make any difference

yeah, hardcore isn't as bad as what most people make it seem. So far I have no problems except for my limbs and seeing the docter about it.

tried it with hardcore on and didnt like it as much personally but people looking for a challenge and that are more into these games should be ok with hardcore :)
