View Full Version : Why do most people say this game is terrible?

I got this game reluctantly, because everyone i knew (who loved the first two) said this game was trash. But after the first part, i was sucked into the game and couldn't stop playing until i saw the ending. The only thing i had any problem with was the framerate issues that occasionally popped up randomly.
Do you think III was the worst in the Fable franchise yet, or not?

Honestly it's my favorite in the series!
Followed by 1 and than 2.
IMHO Molyneux actually delivered what he promised and improved everything that makes Fable ....
well Fable lol.

Well, I don't think its terrible, I think they dumbed down the combat majorly, and I just plain don't like the sanctuary.

My honest opinion of Fable 3 here....... this aint flaming I'm just saying what I think.

After playing both the previous Fable's I picked this up a few weeks after release and I'm currently playing this through now, for the most part enjoying it apart from a couple of big but rather basic issues for me.

First and the one that makes me cranky the most...... the horrific and totally useless map and for Peter Molyneux who's been making games for 20+ years.... well he should know better, the map bears no relevance to your surroundings or landmarks around you.... so much so it's not actually possible to even show your own location on it. This makes finding landmarks (Cave entrances etc) and finding collectibles a total pain in the arse.

The glowing trail..... still even after the exact same behavior in Fable II still doesn't work properly, sends you round in circles, vanishes randomly or sometimes doesn't appear at all!

Combat...... it feels clunky, slow and un-responsive..... totally rushed if you ask me and pretty much a copy from Fable II..... no improvements here!

The random frame rate slowdown is something that doesn't bother me really, that's a bug....... basic gameplay mechanics such as a decent map are what interest me more

Molyneux made a lot of big promises (yet again) and for the most part failed to deliver and for me this is just a quick follow up from Fable II with a couple of changes thrown in.

As I said..... I'm enjoying playing this but I think that's more down to the humor within the game and its refreshing to laugh at a game once in a while and actually enjoy its content.

Not sure if a number 4 is planned but I think this game needs a complete refresh and update!

I dont think it's terrible, but I do thnik Fable 2 was better ..
Agree, they have put some nice new features in, but most of them (like the 3D map and the new iteracting system) were performed poorly

in general it was a good game, just not up to my expectations. loved that we were the son of fable II character, i thought that was pretty clever.

my problem with fableIII is mainly that they added in features i wasnt too fond of, and took out things that made fable 2 fantastic.

why go from expression wheel, to crap choices to interact with villagers?

lots of un-used buttons on the controller. Combat consists of X for attack, hold X for block, hold X in direction for flourish. enuf said

going to stop tho so this doesnt turn into a rant. because i overall liked the game, lol

I liked Fable 3, there's only a few things I didn't like about it, but Fable 2 was definitely way better. The things I didn't like about Fable 3 is that it was an extremely short game, shorter than Fable 2. I did not enjoy collecting weapons for an achievement, and as has been pointed out they got rid of the expression wheel and made you a slave to whatever expression pops up at the time.

Well I have literally just finished and am waiting/hoping that this achievement pops during the credits - I for one don't understand the criticism this game got when it came out?!
- I read and watch reviews, but I prefer to have my own opinion - I never got this game when it came out as I didn't have the money at the time, but someone gave it to me for christmas and have only recently got around to playing it?! - Being a fable fan - That's not good - I know.

But I thought this game was fantastic - changed many key factors for the good - I thought the story was gripping and my only problem with the game - was that the final battle wasn't as big as a battle as I would have hoped but none the less happy to see my Kingdom saved. Also the frame rates were a little poor here and there but overall - Fable 3 stands proudly at the top for me!! :)
Hope you enjoyed my review lol

*Ding* just popped :) - Had me worried for a second there lol.

Horrible inventory system; pointlessly dumbed down combat and interactions; long load times; too many collectibles; usesless map; dlc released without repairing glithches; broken promises by Molyneux

Yea that pretty much sums it up, except the long load times, always 5-10 seconds for me.

I was a massive fan of fable 1 and 2 and after completing fable 3 I can say I'm no longer a fan of the series and here is why:

-No choice in expressions anymore

-Goes into a cutscene to perform an expression with an ai or coop buddy, rendering them unable to express back until I exit out of the cutscene

-Unable to fail expressions I mean really, attempting an epic fart and then failing was the funniest moments in fable 2 for me especially with 'fart offs' over live.

- Having to repair houses, fair enough I liked that addition, what I didn't like however was having to go to EVERY house individually to repair

-The combat and levelling up was just frustrating especially when coming face to face with 7 (I forget the name) warewolves.

-What is so wrong with having the option to use the back button as another menu instead of having to press the guide button or heading into the godforsaken sanctuary.

- "I bilieve their is some new items in the sanctuary shop" x 100 for every time you enter the place, I'm not buying your overpriced pointless dlc thank you.

-The story is lacking and is very very short, you spend aaaaages on the prequel then you rule and have to make what? 12 choices? Then it's last level, game over.

-What happend to the childhood? That's the whole point of fable you begin as a kid, a tragedy occurs you age and get revenge, I thought the whole selling point of fable one and two was the way that time elapses as you play? I saw none of that in this bar a year.

- i have to unlock to marry someone? To learn how to fart?

I will stop there because I have hardly begun, this game feels like a new company made fable 3 and tried to sell it on name alone, much like the recent operation flashpoint.

I'm sick of games becoming so dumbed down that they become boring to play, it's like the P,C of the gaming world, this game is for 16+ not 8+ treat us like it.

Ooooooh I almost forgot! The most important part!!!!!

Capturing a wanted criminal, or escorting a merchant through the woods, how do you do it??

Yup by holding his hand like you would the woman your on a date with, seriously? How does no one play test this game and say "hang on a minuite Pete why am I holding hands with this murderer?" What's wrong with dragging him by his neck with no affect to the speed we move?

There is nothing wrong about Fable III, but there is nothing mind blowing about it either. Some of the tweaks and enhancements do make things more easier to move about the GUI and HUD but then some parts feel so simplified that it almost feels watered down from predecessors. I enjoyed the game, mostly for the story and the experiences, but the bugs and combat weren't it's high points for me. If you asked me to review the game, I could probably go on for hours, but I would have to rate the game somewhere in the 8.5/10 area, whereas Fable II 9/10 and Fable: The Lost Chapters 9.2/10.

I know this is overused and kind of cliche, but I kind of look at Fable 3 as Fable 2.5. They improved some things, but overly streamlined others to the point that you end up with a mix of what was good from Fable 2 with what is new and interesting in Fable 3, minus a few things they should have left alone (expression selection for one.)

I've had the frame rate issues, but that really doesn't bother me that much. The combat on the other hand is a tad disappointing. Not being able to easily aim at individual enemy parts with your ranged weapon kind of disappointed me and the fact that the slow motion shot cam on ranged weapons is more of a hindrance (has almost gotten me killed more than once) than a cool addition kind of puts a damper on things.

I think what really sold the game for me was the visual representation of The Road to Rule and the Sanctuary. I know a lot of people hate both, but I have to admit I think it was a pretty clever way of making you feel the progression of the game and I quite like the way inventory and everything else is handled.

All in all I am more impressed with the game than disappointed.

Personally I thought the game was just flat out boring. Run here, hold A, run back, hold A. Combat was nothing but button mashing and rolling around. Granted the new 3D map is a great addition, but it feels like they stripped away a lot of the charm of Fable 2 (bring back the expression wheel!)

Fable 3 is so much better then Fable 2 which is the shitty one in this trilogy, fable 1 was my favorite until i played 3.

The improved coop is awesome, compared to fable 2s horrible fucking camera..

And Peter molyneux always breaks his promises, thats what he does but that doesnt make Fable 3 less awesome.

Sure the choppy framerate is annoying at first, but generally it holds for a couple of seconds and then its gone. Cant complain about the collectibles because they are not that bad, sure they are not as good as the Resident evil 5 ones or the Halo skulls but they are still not that bad. I enjoyed collecting most of them except my last gnome, because i was stuck at 49/50 and i checked everywhere for it which took me about 2 hours ><

The sanctuary is a odd change but its not bad either, i would prefer if they tried to make it more RPGish with fable 4 with inventorys like WOW/Diablo etc

lol .. you have the right to have your opinion, but Fable 3 is nowhere as good as Fable 2.
Expression system is less, inventory system is less, shop system is less, 3D map is annoying since you cant even see yourself
And about the 'make it more RPGish', PM has said they want Fable to be more action/adventure instead of RPG

And I don't like that there arent normal weapons anymore, only Legendaries

Why do people hate Fable 3? Because it's not Fable 2. i knew people who hated Fable 2 because they didn't think it was as good as the original Fable. Fable 3 isn't worse than Fable 2, it's just different. If you don't like the changes, i can understand how you might be unhappy with the game. Personally, i love all three games.

And fable 2 isnt as good as Fable 1

Ofcourse you also got the right to have your opinion.

I can agree that the map is a bit wtf, if they just added a "YOU ARE HERE MARKER" then it would be perfectly fine.

Atleast Fable 3 isnt looking like Disney on ice, which the second one did thanks to the characters clonky and horrible movement. When you run it looks like you are using iceskates.

I cant speak for Fable1 since I've never played it
Map would indeed have been better if there was a You are Here marker, but sadly, there isnt. Also, it's dumb they didnt put in a Repair All function for the house repair, since now you would have to repair all 100+ houses one by one

Last thing is the holding hands stuff. As soon as you walked too hard, you and the other person let go. And it seems it's kinda hard to hold hands properly when walking stairs.

But anyway, I'm not going to try to convince you Fable 2 is better, because I know I cant.

If you missed fable 1 you should find a way to play it, it was a really good game when it came out :) Still got it standing in my shelf, ofcourse i dont know if it managed to age well.. Some games does and others are not as fortunate

Repairing the houses is annoying but my coop buddy gifted me 5 million so i dont really care about the houses and got around 10-15 millions. i repair them if i feel like it

And you are right walking stairs with people often means a gap of 1 metre between you and them, atleast they are still magically sucked to your hand so it could be worse i guess.

This game isnt perfect in anyway but neither was the second nor the first, they were just enjoyable games (except fable2s coop)

All Fable 3 did for me personally was to give me a good coop game, it was short but still very very enjoyable. Hopefully we get some DLC/Patches to sort some of the annoying flaws, all in all its just a casual Action adventure game with buttonmashing instead of interesting combat.

God i wish that a talented studio could get Lionheads Fable budgets to work with :(

it was short but still very very enjoyable.

Well since I managed to complete a playthrough for a friend in one weekend (also doing side-quests) story was far too short. My fastest time doing story was 7.8 hours. I did rush through a bit, but a storyline under 10-15 hours is unacceptAble for me, since Fable 2 story took me 25-35 hours three times.

I like the game, it's just I think Fable 3 has more lesser points than improvements compared to Fable 2.

I dont remember personally how long time Fable 2 took me, but i also did the load thingy to get the 3 endings asap.
But yea i totally agree that it should had been more instead of less, this game goes way too fast. My girlfriend got the game yesterday and she is already on the 364 days to final battle countdown first time playing it and learning the controls.

The things that made me dislike Fable 2 a bit was
The horrible movement, it looks so wrong it just pisses me off
Coop shared camera
Emote wheel was annoying as fuck
The entire village chasing you all over because they loved you so much

So for me they improved the things i didnt like, sure the villagers can still be annoying but not in the same amounts.

Meh i still gotta do the DLC stuff for Fable 2, got the goty edition laying around but i played trough 1 of them and just got so bored i turned it off shortly after.

Hope they learn with dlc/Fable 4 that people want more not less, its not like we are on a gaming diet we want to get stuffed with content

I had a few issues with the game, which others have expanded on already, like the golden trail and the map. For the most part however, when I wanted to find collectables compared to guides, I was able to find my way without to much work.

Compared to the other two games, I honestly think it is better. I didn't mind having the combat system stripped down a little, having spells further merged or removed completely. The story made sense and was enthralling.

I think my biggest gripe is how short it is and the requirement to trade with others online to get two achievements.

Fable 3 was boring, unchallenging and frustrating in many places. The fable games never were very hard, but this one just takes the p*ss. Even the developers know its easy - they put a blimmin' achievement on to complete the game without getting knocked down!

I recently went to finish the island paradise achievement, only to find that my character (along with nearly 2 days worth of gameplay, all but 3 gnomes, and most of the keys) had spawned under the map falling into infinity. I can play on other players games in co op, but my game is f*cked, for lack of a better word.

This game was rushed out, leaving it glitchy, laggy and repetative. Its been dumbed right down (if that was possible from the previous 2) and is more fitting for 8-12 year olds, not serious gamers. The interviews with Molyneux that i saw got me really excited (especially the magic not having a cap on max power) When I finally got it, it was just disappointment after disappointment.

Its definitely playable, but considering how much feedback lionsgate got from their loyal fanbase, and how they took next to none of it into account, I think they should be ashamed of themselves. Its like a bunch of clueless old people got the ability to make a computer game, and made what the youth of today might like from a fantasy based action adventure.

Oh, and why has no one mentioned the shocking array of weapons?! Swords or hammers. apparently they are the only 2 types of melee weapons in the whole world. Idiots.

I'm annoyed at the inability to skip scenes, the inability to choose your own expressions, and the inability to use items outside of combat.

I do, however, like the sanctuary. It's an interesting take on the start menu.

Agree with most of the comments here. A lazy add on to fable 2. Frame rate issues are pretty inexcusable especially considering the levels are mostly small areas. The boring relationship quests and most unforgivable for me the blatant way your butler tries to get you to buy the dlc.
And something that used to bug me about Fable 2 that's still not fixed is when your missus and kids encounter you in the street then use the same dialogue as the other peasants!.....and....and...You're the king of Albion? why can't you dress the wife up to look like the queen instead of Cinderella pre-ball? And...and...why do your kids never get any older than 9?
Fable 2 lasted forever, Fable 3 - finished and already starting to fade from memory!

Oh...And what happened to Kinect support?

This was by far the worst in the series. The story was the only strong point in the game, if you don't mind playing a game for a 12 hour story, and it could be done even faster than this after the first playthrough. I had 100% completion on my 3rd completion a week on this game, and I only had 25 hours in.

With that added in with all of the bugs, it looks like Lionhead blew through this in about 4 months, went gold, released, and will probably soon go out of business. Though I have heard a rumor of a Fable 4 with Kinect support????? Any staff heard this? Now that would be awesome.

i played this through with my girlfriend, got to say its about on par with fable 2, with parts improved such as the multiplayer and some voice acting (we both love Steven Fry, John Cleese and Simon Pegg), but where the VA is amazing in places its terrible in others. didnt like the expression system, where you could only interact with one person at a time with a random expression, the weapons which lacked diversity, the lack of a proper leveling system, and i still cant understand why the dog is still in this game its, would be much better for the game to have a HUD map to promote exploration.
in short if you play this game do it in multiplayer with a friend, dispite the bad points we still had a lot of fun playing together

I agree with a lot of the opinions regarding the drawbacks of Fable 3. The expressions are horrible, personally I don't wish to do the Cha Cha or play patty cake with some guy. I eventually stopped approaching male NPCs all together and initiated action with the females or children.

This "Hero" is childish and immature, nothing regal exists in his character. He annoys me silly. I did lots of eye rolling. I will give him 2 points on attractiveness, cause his Daddy was hidious! lol (I'm a female so I can say that, ha.)

Why are the women so darn ugly? Seriously, the NPC women in the game are nasty or have Marge Simpson hair. Geez, Lionhead must hate females. Further if you marry one of the flee riden chicks it would be nice to give them a bath and change their clothes to what a King's wife would wear. That was a pet peeve of mine in Fable 2 as well. My King should have been able to marry Page, she would have been the perfect wife, compliments his juvenile behavior.

Ok, so now lets diss on the male NPCs, Lionhead do you really think the Queen wants to marry some pathetic NPC male that looks like Ebenezer Scrooger or some sorry fat ass? Really, do you think so?

Why does my King look like a vampire? I have not used any dyes. He reminds me of Dave Navarro, which isn't so bad, except for the blue tinted skin.

The Sanctuary, a complete mess.

Lionhead would you mind learning how to code for save slots? Or is that beyond your ability?

Give me back inventory, please, and while you are at it do you think when shopping I could buy more than one item? Get rid of the pawn shops I seriously disliked that idea. Buy and sell to any vender. You had it right in Fable 2.

The 3D map is garbage. Fable 2 wins hands down on fast travel. Sometimes I am just not in the mood for Balvarians while on my way to Mourningwood. The worst mapping system ever! Oh, and if LH needs the code for "You are Here" I will be happy to provide it.

Ok, the castle is the size of the Sears Tower in Chicago, but I can only have 2 children in the castle? I am now unmarried, thank god, I divorced 4 and killed two. I have 4 children, 3 boys, one girl. I left the girl in the orphanage to make her think about her begging, greedy, bitchy self. It worked. My second son I named Sparrow, in honor of Mr. Ugly in Fable 2, is black. Hmm, so much for genetic clarity. He's my favorite kid. He is the best of the four. My oldest is a whiner. I would like to have all my children at the castle. It makes no sense to separate them. Also it would be nice if they get beyond the age of around 6.

Houses. Who in the world would want the upstairs only accessible from the outside? The houses in F3 are horrible. The towns are horrible. I don't like any of them.

Repair, oh my gosh, what was Lionhead thinking. Wouldn't it have been easier to maintain a landlord's maintanance account? Even for each location would have been fine, if it runs lows, put money in the account. Very simple.

Combat system = easy. That's okay by me I get annoyed being attacked every time I go to Millfield or Mourningwood. Just let me deliver the darn letter or package. Because there is no repeatition in this game is there? Pure developer laziness and lack of creativity. LH wins the award for that one.

Graphics, definitely not eye candy, and it lags at times.

There are plenty of buttons on the controller LH, USE THEM! Go talk to Bioware and ask how they did ME2, they know what they are doing. LH not so much.

Replayablity only if you wish to be tortured or so bored watching paint dry sounds more fun.

Please get off the chicken obssession. It's getting really old, and the fact I don't like the flogging little demons.

Rant over.

I was a little late to the party on this game, but I generally liked Fable 3 (probably even more than 2, though I did miss hearing Shepard Book's voice through the game)
Only real issues I had were not having access to my inventory, and the fact that even with the game running off my HD, LionHead STILL can't seem to manage to get the game (or the golden trail) to run smoothly.
Loved the story, the humor, the progression of the world, and all the little easter eggs.
