How to Make an Achievement Guide!

Below is how to format an achievement guide for the forums, it was initially inteded for submission in the Submit thread (to be put onto the main page) but can also be used to submit the guide into the game's personal thread. For those who want to just put the guide into the game's thread, use the exact methods as below except instead of going to the Submit forum, go to the game's forum. The rest uses the exact process.

Please don’t make an achievement guide if you don’t have the majority of the achievements. Work in progress guides rarely look decent when they’re finished unless the game’s really popular.

Now, with that said, I'm going to be using Call of Duty 2 as the test subject to show how everything's done. NOTE: All images below are clickable, clicking them will open a new window with the full size image. If there are any problems with the images please send me a PM.

Before we do anything, we need the achievements out and ready to go. The easiest way to do this, is to go to X360A's homepage (http://www.xbox360achievements.org/index.php):

http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y146/6778/xbox/x360a/GuideGuide/Untitled-1copy.jpg (http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y146/6778/xbox/x360a/GuideGuide/Untitled-1.jpg)

Then go to your game, for CoD2 I'll go to "Retail Games" then scroll down to Cod2. Depending on what game you're making the guide for you may have to go to Retail, Arcade, or Japanese.

http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y146/6778/xbox/x360a/GuideGuide/Untitled-2copycopy-1.jpg (http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y146/6778/xbox/x360a/GuideGuide/Untitled-2copy.jpg)

http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y146/6778/xbox/x360a/GuideGuide/Untitled-3copycopy.jpg (http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y146/6778/xbox/x360a/GuideGuide/Untitled-3copy.jpg)

Now it's time to get the achievements! Start at the top-left of the upper most achievement picture. For COD2 it'll be Complete Training:

http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y146/6778/xbox/x360a/GuideGuide/Untitled-4copycopy.jpg (http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y146/6778/xbox/x360a/GuideGuide/Untitled-4copy.jpg)

Now left-click and hold, then drag down and to the right until you're to the right of the of the last achievement picture, and under the "G" (Gamerscore):

http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y146/6778/xbox/x360a/GuideGuide/Untitled-8copycopy.jpg (http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y146/6778/xbox/x360a/GuideGuide/Untitled-8copy.jpg)

Once the achievements are highlighted, press Ctrl+C. You have to use the copy function, as right-clicking and selecting "Copy" won't work!

Once the game's achievements are copied, navigate to the X360A forums (http://www.xbox360achievements.org/forum/index.php). Then click on the "Submit" forums (The Submit forum can be found under the "Xbox360Achievements.org header):

http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y146/6778/xbox/x360a/GuideGuide/Untitled-6copycopy.jpg (http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y146/6778/xbox/x360a/GuideGuide/Untitled-6copy.jpg)

Once you're in the Submit forum, click on "New Thread"

http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y146/6778/xbox/x360a/GuideGuide/Untitled-7copycopy.jpg (http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y146/6778/xbox/x360a/GuideGuide/Untitled-7copy.jpg)

In the Title text bar, enter the following, "TITLE Achievement Guide" but instead of TITLE have the game's title (obviously). Then go into the bigger text box and press Ctrl+V. That should paste your game's achievements into the text box:

http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y146/6778/xbox/x360a/GuideGuide/Untitled-9copy.jpg (http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y146/6778/xbox/x360a/GuideGuide/Untitled-9.jpg)

Now all you need is some descriptions! Go to the achievement you want to start on, I'll start on "Competed Training", and click to the right of it's description. Now, hit the Enter key to go down a line. Before you start typing, apply italics. You can do this by clicking the italics icon, or pressing Ctrl+I. Once italics are applied, enter your description on how to get the achievement:

http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y146/6778/xbox/x360a/GuideGuide/Untitled-10copycopy.jpg (http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y146/6778/xbox/x360a/GuideGuide/Untitled-10copy.jpg)

Repeat the last step for each achievement until the guide is done.

Whoa! A finished guide! That's so awesome! Click "Submit New Thread" and bask in your glory. You rock!

Have to take account to those who only use wordpad or notepad (or Mac equivalents)

With this method, anyone can do it.

I do them in notepad and just add the pictures later (usually) so that I get more time to work on them. It's a good guide though, hopefully more folks will have the confidence to start writing their own.

You can make achievement guides for games that already have them, correct?

Yes, whether they will be put up is another question though. It would have to be a superior guide to the current one, although they can be mixed and matched if a few of the achievements have better methods.

You still make and submit them in the same way though.

I prefer to do them from the printable lists in notepad. Write guide in for list. That way, you have a saved copy in case of a time-out or a re-submit.

This actually makes it harder to move them from the submit forum to the actual list. I will post some guidelines in the submit thread to help people out.
