Introduction

Welcome to Man Vs. Wild! If you're a urine drinking survivalist like the rest of us, then this is the game for you! Man Vs Wild is a survival game based off the popular Discovery program of the same name. I'd say it plays similar to the Cabala hunting games. You must traverse landscapes, search for collectibles, battle viscious woodland creatures, and survive! The mechanics are kinda clunky, and Bear can jump a mile, but it's a low budget game, so to be expected. Unfortunately there isn't a Holiday Inn nearby.

There are two difficulties to choose from: Normal and Survival mode. You do not have to play the game in Survival mode to acquire any achievements. You can complete this game in 1 Playthrough. If you're curious, Survival Mode essentially removes your HUD. You do not know when you need water or food, you just have to guess.

Playthrough 1: Complete Campaign

Use this first playthrough to get accustomed to the mechanics of Bear. You will start off with the Tutorial level and receive "Wild Man" upon its completion. This gives you the basic skills you'll need for building shelters, traversing landscapes and skydiving. Also use this playthrough to gather all collectibles, you can use the descriptions, or videos provided below. When going for the collectibles, should you miss 1 for a specific achievement, then you must replay the entire level again and collect them all again for that specific achievement. At the end of this playthrough you should have all achievements except "Bear Grylls".

About "Born Survivor" achievement: This means you can not be 'incapacitated' at any time. Being killed by the bear in Level 1 counts as being incapacitated. Sliding into a crevice in the ice cave counts as being incapacitated. Dying due to the elements will render you incapacitated. However, falling off a rock, and then the game resets you to a previous checkpoint, is not being incapacitated. Falling off that stupid horse at the end game also does not count. As long as you don't see the screen that says "Bear has been incapacitated" you are fine. If you think you're going to be incap'd, and are quick enough, you can press :start: and reload the checkpoint. If you do get the screen that says "Bear has been Incapacitated" you can dashboard the game quickly and then reload. I have heard of people doing this with success, but I can neither confirm or deny its effectiveness.

Step 2: Grind/Replay for Collectibles

After completing your campaign, if you missed any of the collectibles you can just replay the level to get what you missed. Though, you will have to recollect every type of that collectible in order for the achievement to count. After you've done that, it is safe to say you can start grinding out your experience for max level. This is done by replaying the first mission (not the tutorial) over and over again. Keep doing the skydiving stunts so you rack up a lot of points. When you land, run straight until you see the saving symbol on the bottom of your screen and then reload the level.

Conclusion:

This is a very easy game. With the guide you should spend no more than 10 hours on this game. Just make sure to grab every collectible in each level to avoid needing to replay them. Enjoy the guide!

Story related and can't be missed! This is your basic tutorial level that teaches you the basics of Bear's movements and how to start fires, combine items, catch fish, and build shelters.

Story related and can't be missed! Just to note it: I've landed in 3 different places during this mission. So the first 2 collectibles (bucket and shovel) change position depending on where you land.

Locate all the Gold Rush Trash in the Rockies

There are 9 total pieces of trash to find in the Rockies.

Mining Shovel: Depending on where you land your parachute (either in the tree or on top of a cliff), if it's in the tree, you must cross a tree and then climb a cliff. Once at the top of the cliff, it's off to the left, over some small ledges, behind a tree in front of a pond. If you land on the cliff, it's off to the left.
Bucket: there are two ledges you can go across, take the right side, once you pass the bucket is on the ground near the ledge overlooking a pond.
Mining Barrel: after camping and the bear encounter, once you run away it's on the left before the stone pillars.
Dynamite Stick: after you sleep and encounter a bear, when you run away from it there are some stone pillars. Take the middle path, and follow the pillars to the left. The sticks are on top of it.
Mining Pan: Once you cross the stone pillars, you will see the pan near the water between the cattail plants.
Mining Rafters: You will encounter a Puma! After it runs off, run down the right side of the hill and you will see a bunch of boards against the stone wall.
Dynamite Crate: After the same Puma as above, run down the left side of the hill just past some chipmunks.
Mining Cart: after crossing another log, you might see a Deer in the middle of the area. In the left of this area in some bushes is the cart.
Mining Lamp: after the 2nd bear encounter, run off to the left and you'll see a campfire icon, the lamp is just past the icon.

Locate all Animals of Interest in the Rockies

Ok, I've played this level a few times now and different animals have triggered the "Animals of Interest". But here's a list anyway.

Big Horned Sheep: after climbing the 2nd cliff you will see him on a ledge on the right side of the area. (There is also another one after the 3rd cliff on the left)
Rattlesnake: you will practically run over this, it's on top of the 3rd cliff. There are multiple snakes throughout the level.
Bear: you will encounter this after you make camp and sleep. Unavoidable, plus you will see it 2 more times.
Elk: after the 2nd bear encounter, run way to the left of the area. The elk is across a chasm near some bushes.
Extras: I've also run across a wolf (near 2nd bear encounter), a moose (looking over a ledge near a waterfall), and a puma. Some of these have registered, some have not.

Locate the Rare Plants in the Rockies

There are 4 rare plants to find. These are kinda easy to spot, most plants in the game are green/brown, the rares are the only ones that have some color.

Purple Flowers: (depending on where you land, if you land in the tree they will be before the first cliff you climb; if on top of the cliff you will see it below you on the ground.)
Yellow Flowers: After the puma encounter, run down the hill to the left, the flowers are in front of a tree halfway down.
Orange Flowers: After the 2nd bear encounter you will cross a log and climb up some small ledges, they are on the 2nd ledge.
White Flowers: After jumping off a cliff and getting back to shore, the flowers are behind a tree in this area.

Complete all episodes without passing out

Hardest achievement in the game; and it's honestly not that difficult. Must not pass out at any point during the game. Levels are replayable at any time. Once you get used to the controls and levels, this won't be or sound so impossible. Being incapacitated constitutes being killed by an animal (bear, gator etc), or succumbing to the elements of heat exhaustion, freezing etc. Once used to the levels and the collecting is complete, you can rush through a level in less than 15 minutes. You CAN dashboard the game. If it still doesn't unlock, do all the levels in one sitting by continuing with A after you complete one. As long as you don't get the "Bear has been Incapacitated" screen, you're good.

You collect glowing orbs, complete tasks, set traps, create camps, fight animals and such and you gain levels and attributes to help you through the level. You must reach 8000 SP (Spirit of Adventure) points to reach Bear Grylls rank. You can replay levels over to gain more SP.

**Credit to Chicago Staley** Boosting method: I just kept farming the parachute jump at the beginning of the first level; as soon as you land reach a save point, press start and restart the level over and over. Was getting around 184xp each go didnt take too long.

Is there some trick to getting onto the train from the horse at the end of the game? I keep falling off when I stand up or I fall off when I try to jump onto the train. I've died about 50 times already.

I've found if using the left stick for balance, just kinda tap it, and or move it really lightly. Mashing it left or right will cause you to fall.

Man I've been playing through this on ps3 and I have to say I'm not impressed. I find it to be utter shit. I came over here to use your guide. duck360 made videos for his guide at ps3t.org but the videos are shitty quality. I was just gonna say fuck it and dump this game tomorrow like I originally planned but I'm gonna use your guide and try to get the plat I guess. If you haven't started this game yet though, I wouldn't suggest it.

Does anyone know what is classified as passing out?

Does becoming incapacitated count as passing out or is passing out dying because of the weather?

It's mentioned in the guide, getting killed by the bear in Ep. 1 is incapacitated, running out of health is incapacitated, and succumbing to the elements is incapacitated.

If you fall off something, and it basically reloads you to a previous spot, that does NOT count. I just ran through all of them, I did fall off a few things, but I did not get incapacitated.

Guide is now complete as of 05/02/11.

Solid Guide but if I could make 1 suggestion. Could you put all the chapter specific trophies together? So put like chapter 1 trophies, then the trophies, etc. It just makes the guide easier to follow.

That horse part at the end of patagonia is fucking stupid. My guy keeps falling. I can get him to stand up and then he balances and it says press O to jump when the door is open and I do it and he falls to the right side, EVERY FUCKING TIME. Screw trading this game in, when I'm done with it, I'm breaking it in half.

Oh and btw Born Survivor is glitched. I've beaten the game 4 times, 3 without passing out, twice without using a checkpoint and once without even falling ever. This is bull.

The patagonia ending is a pain in the ass. The game is very poor on explaining what to do, and the camera angle isn't so hot either. I would usually race up past the door, then hold RT so Bear will stand. Hold slightly left on the Left Stick and he should balance himself, then A to jump in. It's easy to explain but hard to do!

Born Survivor may be glitched on the PS3, it is not on Xbox360. I can only suggest you play it in one sitting, and continuing after each mission. But I'm assuming you've already done that.

Yeah, for the Patagonia part, pushing the thumbstick to the left slightly is the key to balancing. If the camera starts to shift, correct it by pushing right. The camera angle was poorly implemented.

I cant find the little terd to save me.

5)After the ice slide, you'll come to an open dirt area with a campfire icon. It's just past the trees on the right side.

Might just me but could anyone be a bit more specific? Is the bug actually on the dirt, on the snow, right next to the wall? The trees dont stop really, so I assumed they were the trees in the dirt being referred to. I have searched several times and I just suck at finding this bug. I have accidently gone too far to the horse part and was unable to go back a few times.

Thanks!

I'll update the guide. It's when you first come to the open dirt area with 3 or so trees, and a campfire icon. The tree on the right, go past this tree about 5 or so steps. The bug is on an ice slope on the right hand side.

The game isn't hard at all but kinda annoying, and everyone make sure to exit to Dashboard when ever you fall or get killed by an animal !
Thanks for the guide :)

I just kept farming the parachute jump at the beginning of the first level as soon as you land reach a save point, press start and restart the level over and over. Was getting around 184xp each go didnt take too long.

There really isn't an easy way to gain xp, but I think Chicago Staley has the right idea. Da bears. I added the strat to the guide, credited to you.

Personally I reached Bear Gryll's level by the Deserted Island level.. but I had replayed the levels a bunch getting collectibles while writing the guide!

So if you get killed by a bear or fall, its recommended you exit to the dashboard and restart the game.
If you don't follow those instructions, what achievement does this effect?

Granted I just started the game last night, died 2 times by the bear and never exited to the dashboard. Is this going to cause me problems?

Being killed by the bear and getting "incapacitated" will negate the "Born Survivor" achievement. And you don't have to dashboard the game, reloading the checkpoint will suffice.

Since you just started though, I'd just play through the game and get the collectibles and get used to the levels. Do 'Born Survivor' last.

This is beyond frustrating. I made it all the way to Patagonia, and fell inside the ice slide tunnel thing. Before I could pause and relod checkpoint I got the incapacitated screen. :| I reloaded checkpoint, finished the level, and no achievement. *disk snap*

Yea that bit is a pain, when you first enter the slide, go left at the fork, it will then fork again and go right.. then it's pretty much a straight path all the way to the end. That happened to me once as well.

At the end of the game if I fall of the horse, do I have to dashboard?

Every time I fail that part, I dashboard and it starts me before I even catch the horse.

Also I know it has been said plenty of time but this part *uckin sucks. Terrible camera

No you don't, falling off the horse doesn't count. Only when you get the screen that says "Bear has been incapacitated" are you screwed. If it just reloads your last checkpoint, you're ok.

To my knowledge there is not. And come on now.. you can run through the Sahara level with only filling your canteen twice. This game is not that difficult. Plus as you level up, select resistance to elements, or dehydrate slower.

yeah just took me a bit to get used to. Once i caught on that you only land in 2 spots on the first level, then i breezed through the game. Except for the stupid horse part that seems to plague everyone with it's bs. Easy 1,000 nonetheless.

He's right Xeno, plus your hair look stupid, and you smell bad. Also, your mom.

Kidding aside, can you please add the "falling off the horse doesn't count for Born Survivor". Yes, it's here in the thread, but I had to search for it, it would just make it an easier read if it was actually in the guide. The reason being, you're asking us to see if it resets us, or gets the "incapacitated" screen. I dashboarded four times on the ice sheets before I found out you had to fall and swim. You get what I'm trying to say, poorly? Great guide by the way, I just hate how if I miss one, "there's no need to backtrack." Boned me out of the boats in the Everglades. Stupid game. :woop:

At least per specific level, if you missed one, then when you replay the level you must collect them all again, at least for whichever achievement you're going for.

Great guide Xenolith666!! Even tho you mostly just need the collectible guide videos since this game is just a giant scavenger hunt of collectibles. Rented this game a few days ago, and only missing the Born Survivor and Bear Grylls.Super easy and fun game in my opinion.....until the horse and train part at the end of Patagonia.

EDIT: Even tho I said the game is easy, I still had to do two playthroughs for Born Survivor.
I feel that the description on the guide for Born Survivor is a little misleading, also a few notes for the horse ride & collectibles. Here is what I would add & can confirm:

http://www.xbox360achievements.org/forum/../images/achievements/1247/+H32yQ==.jpg (http://www.xbox360achievements.org/forum/../game/man-vs-wild/achievement/52465-Born-Survivor.html)Born Survivor 100 http://www.xbox360achievements.org/forum/../images/site/gp-g.png
Complete all episodes without passing out

NOT the hardest achievement in the game. The achievement descriptions is a little misleading. You can get this achievement on your first play through. Its pretty hard to pass out from dehydration, hunger, and from weather conditions. (The Sahara level could be a little challenging just cause of the heat literally killing you slowly and water isn't easy to find.)

-What I can suggest is use your water canteen only when you really need it. You will hear Bear say "Im really thirsty" at that point drink some water, not all of it. Once you find any source of water, drink the remaining water you have. The refile your canteen so that you have 100% water. ( Do this for every level.) Some levels might be a little harder to located later. Just take each level slow, and try not to run/sprint since that drains your hydration.

-Also you can fall of a cliff, fall off a rock, fall into a hole, get swallowed by quick sand, fall off the horse and you will still be good for the achievement. The only way(s) the achievement wont unlock is if you get: attacked by the bear in level 1 & 2, have a puma kill you, get poisoned by a snake or worm enough times, pass out from dehydration or hunger, and the obvious pass out from the weather conditions in the level(s). Pretty much when the screen tells you "Bear has been incapacitated"

-If you do manage to get incapacitated during any level. You can either dashboard when your on the " Bear has been incapacitated" screen, or simply restart the entire level, or complete the level and then replay that same level before continuing on to the next level. If you get to the last level and the achievement does not pop. Then I hate to say it you will have to redo all five level in one sitting. (If this does happen Bear should be fully leveled or if not almost fully leveled with will make surviving much easier.)

Patagonia: Horse and Train Tip
This by far was frustrating to me. Key is to tap the :rtbut: untill your infront of the trains door. The Bear will casually start to stand up on the horses back. At this point you need to balance yourself with the :ls:, just slighty tap it. DO NOT move it crazy like if your keeping balance in a Tony Hawk game. Look at the train and ground while keeping balance. At some point You will be able to tap :abut: to jump in the train.

Note: Collectibles
Something to add to the collectibles, all of them.
If you miss one of any collectible(s) in a level. You will have to recollect all those again. For example: The Rockie Mountains has 4/4 flowers/plants to find. If you complete the level with 3/4, you cant go back and just collect the one you need. You will need to recollect all the flowers/pants again.
This goes for all levels and all types of collectibles.

Thanks for the guide. It was overall very helpful. Some tips to make it better:

1) Add something to the Patagonia completion achievement that gives tips to beating the horse part. Some that I found on these forums and on TA: Use the background of the scene for the balancing sequences (taming the horse and also when jumping to the train) instead of actually trying to balance the rider.

Also, I had the hardest time with the train part until I realized you had to keep the right trigger held perfectly the whole time. That was not really evident to me. Basically put your index finger resting on the edge of the controller and the trigger and find the sweet spot. THen it is easy to hold it. Use the background of the trees and train to balance the rider. And make sure you alrady have your thumb on the A button to jump.

And for the Born Survivor achievment, you should mention that you can dashboard up until the point that you see the "Bear has been incapacitated screen". Some people claim you can still dashboard there, others said it didnt work. I wouldnt take any chances. Also the game seems to glitch and force you to replay all levels over again if you miss it. So if you do get incapacitated, before finishing the level make sure to restart the current level from the beginning. I did this and it worked fine for me. Also if you are about to die from an animal or whole in the ice caves or the hot steam, pause and reload checkpoint quickly.

Great Guide, I am a huge fan of the show, but I've heard this game is complete crap.
