Most likely just a mock-up they made, but we'll wait and see. Would love to have an excuse to play that twice!

i'd say theres a 95% chance of it being LIVE. especially with the multiplayer this time around theres no real reason for it not to be LIVE this time around.

Still kinda annoyed the first one wasn't. i could of gotten 1000/1000 on it 10 times by now lol.

was wondering if anyone here knows how i can rate my pc like vista does without using vista (i CANT STAND vista). ive heard peopel talking of 3d mark scores and stuff, but ive been out of pc gaming since my last water cooled pc exploded a few years ago.

i build my own and am quite good with overclocking... just wanna see the results!!

i have a

CPU-AMD phenom II x2 550 black edition, 3.2ghz Dual Core
oc'd to 8.2ghz (2 x 4.1ghz)

RAM-8gbs of OCZ platinum 1022mhz DDR2
oc'd to roughly 1200mhz @ 1 DIMM per channel - dam cpu limitation!

GPU-Sapphire Radeon 4850 Vapour x edition
512mb memory oc'd to 1200mhz
core clock oc'd to 700mhz

Runs pretty cool at...;)
cpu - 35oC idle, 51oC under load
case - 28oC
gpu - 34oC idle, 48oC under load

was wondering if anyone here knows how i can rate my pc like vista does without using vista (i CANT STAND vista). As far as I remember OS's like XP never had a WEI rating like Vista does... I've always thought the WEI was a rather arbitrary system anyway.

Just get a game and try it out. :p

If anyone would like to know, Gears of war and quantum of solace run fine in windows 7. You need to play halo2 in windows vista compability mode though or else your controller won't work properly. I wanted to tell this because if you go to systemrequirementslab with windows 7 it tells you that you can't play the games because they don't support your OS but they work well. Good luck with pc gaming!

Hi i bought right now the thq pack on steam with warhammer 40k DoW 2. now i downloaded the games for windows live client, but when i try to launch it, it ask me for user/pass and then crash, reporting an error. any suggestion?

i have a semi-new pc and under the testyourpc etc etc etc my pc passed on DoW2 with RECCOMENDED, so i say it's ok.

Your post is a bit unclear...what is crashing? Games for Windows Live client, Steam, or Dawn of War 2?

If GFWL, go here: http://forums.gamesforwindows.com/8.aspx
If Steam, go here: https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=1223-QROC-4460
If Dawn of War 2, go here for links to a troubleshooting guide and THQ support forums: https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=4455-QOGL-5860

Hope that helps.

Woah. This thread has answered all my questions. I've always wanted to get into PC gaming but never done so. The achievements made me want to get into it even more, but I never knew where to start.

Pants, your first two posts answered my questions. As soon as I get home, I'm gonna test out my comp to see if it's compatible with any of the Live games! Hopefully it'll run some games(It's a newer computer my wife and I bought from Best Buy November last year). So here's hoping it'll run some games!! Thanks so much!! :D

No worries. I just bought a new PC myself (arriving on the 8th) that I got for Windows 7 and to prepare for Starcraft II next year, so I'll maybe do an overhaul of this thread and test out some games myself. Only actually played Fallout, Halo, Gears and Viva Pinata on the PC. :p

Definitely want an excuse to play Batman again!

Yeah, I'm crossing my fingers my comp will handle some games. I'd only be able to get a few anyways since funds are very limited. I guess that's what happens when you get married, pay off all your bills and attempt to save for a house :p

And this is how I counter your specs. Check mine out.....

The tower is black(I think it's a Dell)
Can burn cds
No speakers yet
A faded, yellowish emachines monitor
And um, it turns on and everything in like less than a minute!

How's that list of specs look? ;) Yeah, I know nothing about PCs.

Haha, that is indeed a sick machine. Mine's got... this stuff:

3.20GHz AMD Phenom IIx4 Quad-Core 955
AMD 780V and SB700 Chipset
8GB DDR2 RAM
1TB 7200 RPM SATA HD
Onboard Radeon HD 3100
Discrete GeForce 8400GS (512MB DDR2)
Windows 7

And a bunch of little specs that really mean nothing. Obviously quite a bit weaker than yours, but I got a good deal at about $700 for it. Can't imagine how much yours was. 3k at least?

Nice.

2.3GHz Intel Quad-Core
4 GB DDR2 RAM.
ATI Radeon HD 3450
640GB 7200 RPM internal and a 1TB external
Windows 7 Professional 64-bit

Those are some of my specs. Not as powerful as yours (and certainly not the other guy O_O) but at least I got Windows 7 for free direct from M$ 3 weeks before release :woop:

Dustinator
12-02-2009, 02:36 PM
Okay, so I used the system requirements link in the first post from Pants and here are some of my specs

Intel Pentium 4 3.0 GHz or AMD Athlon 64 3500+
2.50 GHz Performance Rated at: 5 GHz
2.9 GB RAM
Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium Edition, 32-bit (Build Service Pack 16001)
Graphics card-NVIDIA GeForce 6150SE nForce 430
220 GB of free disk space

As you can see from some above posts, I'm no whiz when it comes to computers. I don't want to invest in upgrading my comp like buying a graphics card.....My question is, can I run some games that the site says I don't have the minimum to run? The only games I'd want to really play on my pc(achievement wise) is Halo 2, Gears of War and Quantum of Solace. With my comp, I can only run Halo 2 but for QoS and GOW it says I need a card like a NVIDIA Geforce 6600+ / ATI x700+. Think I can skate by with the current card I have now and play those 3 games? Thanks in advance for your guys' response.

Sorry for double posting, but CRAP. My computer is filled with viruses now. It was fine for over a year and then as soon as I checked my pc requirements using the link in the first post, my comp was acting different. Didn't think much of it, then next day(yesterday evening) my computer had over 40 types of viruses. The main one is an nvidia virus that my protection plan can't delete. This blows. So many windows keep popping up and I can't do anything. I'm no pc whiz.

Also, the reason I'm posting is cause I signed on at work, but as soon as I opened this thread, the work comp closed the window cause of a potential virus trying to infect the computer. Don't know what's going on with this thread, but beware. This is exactly why I haven't gotten into PC gaming. Don't know what I'm doing and I got a virus now. Don't know if I'll be coming back into this thread again for fear of infecting my work computer

It should sync eventually. Just make sure you are signed into LIVE on the PC when you're playing the games and try to close the games properly through the menus. I'd maybe suggest signing into a game (and LIVE), then minimize the program and load up xbox.com in your browser. Refresh it every minute or so until the games appear so you know they've synced up.

Hmm, I'm having problems getting my GFWL to work that I just downloaded. I downloaded Osmos and World of Goo, both of which have a 512MB RAM and 1.0GHz requirement. I have 512MB of RAM, and over double the GHz requirement, Intel Pentium 4. Every time I fire up a game the game enters full screen mode, black screen, error report pops up. What am I doing wrong here?

Oh, and is it safe for me to get Waldo before it goes back up to full price? It says the requirement is 1GB of RAM... not sure if I will be able to play it or not with my system below the standard.

Ugg, this is why I like console gaming, no worries that a game is going to work like you expect it to.

The Pants Party
12-23-2009, 01:31 PM
To be honest, the requirements are way higher than they need to be for the arcades. Even with a retail Shadowrun, I ran it at 1GB RAM and it suggested having 2. Worked completely fine. I now have 8GB of RAM, but my old computer way crap and still played it without lag. :)

TONS of people have been having issues with installing/playing these games, and I really don't know if it's the same issue with everyone or not. I'm not that tech-savvy to troubleshoot people, so I'd suggest heading over to the gamesforwindows.com forums and showing them a screenshot of whatever error message you're getting, they would definitely know better.

There should be another addition to the list- if games available on Steam will have GFWL/Xbox Live Achievements. I've heard that World of Goo will only have Live achievements if it is purchased through the GFWL store and will only have Steam achievements on Steam.

I can't say if this is truth or not, but if anyone can figure it out, it should be added somewhere.

I can say that Batman: Arkham Asylum has Live achievements when purchased through Steam.

The Pants Party
12-24-2009, 01:19 AM
It's an easy distinction as far as I can tell: retail games purchased through steam will work under GFWL. Arcades won't.

I resurrected an old thread (http://www.xbox360achievements.org/forum/showthread.php?p=2654071#post2654071) then realized it may be better to simply request an addition to this thread.

Could we get an *asterisk* or something added to the list for games that may be purchased on Steam without losing GFWL achievement compatibility?

Example:
Batman AA purchased on Steam = GFWL achievements :)
World of Goo purchased on Steam = no GFWL achievements :(

If possible, lower the graphic / performance settings.

If possible, lower the graphic / performance settings.

So it may be a graphics card issue, not weaksauce processor problem.

Thanks for tip, I will give it a shot.

You can buy a retail copy, that works just as well (if not better). So my retail game will be added automatically to the GSWL client where I can start the game, or should I start the game with the shortcut that's always on my deskboard?

So my retail game will be added automatically to the GSWL client where I can start the game, or should I start the game with the shortcut that's always on my deskboard?

OffT; Sorry for my bad english, not a native speaker.

No, it would just be launched as any other game through a shortcut; won't show up in the client.

The Pants Party

Were you properly logged into your Gamertag and connected to Live? I have heard of no issues with any game's Live functionality.

^I highly doubt that.
It is 100% true :( Take a look at the Russian covers (different releases):
http://www.ozon.ru/multimedia/audio_cd_covers/1000868108.jpg http://www.ozon.ru/multimedia/audio_cd_covers/1000870667.jpg
Both releases lack "Live" word on the cover and in game there is even no Live option to click.
And answering your question - have Russian releases of Gears of War and Batman: Arkham Asylum. They are both Live games.

A heads up for the list of games with achievements.

Metro 2033 isn't being shown as a Games for Windows Live game on any cases that I've seen.

The Pants Party
03-15-2010, 07:56 PM
Yeah, had not udpated the list in a while. Took off Metro.

As for Fallout 3, that is most definitely a regional issue. Maybe they couldn't use Live in Russia for whatever reason, but any other region I have seen (US/UK/etc) still has Live functionality.

truemh
03-15-2010, 08:16 PM
Yeah, by the way - forgot to mention. We don't have Live service in Russia. I have to register as a resident of a country with service running (I registered in US, for example).

The Pants Party
03-15-2010, 08:35 PM
Ah, yeah, that's the issue right there. Since you can't play any 360 games over Live, why would PC be any different. ;)

I would try to import the game from the UK or something in that case.

Section 8 from Steam works fine. Sometimes you need to log out of GFWL and back in to upload ranked stats, though (just log out/back in at the very start of the game, and it's fine).

Also, DiRT 2 seems to be working fine.

Oh, and I can vouche for Halo 2 working on Windows 7. I did notice it runs a little slower on 7 compared to Vista though.. even though the Windows 7 machine I put the game on is significantly better all around then the specs of the Vista machine. Could of been a fluke though.

In the marketplace application, there should be a tab for download history or download manager. Something like that. Click that and anything you've downloaded will show, and somewhere in the notes of each game will be your Product Key.

Sorry for the vague description but I'm at work. If you don't find it I can provide some better instructions once I get home tonight. :p

Thanks for putting together the information and lists. Just thought I would point out that some of the links are busted. In each of the above, the WEI link in parentheses always redirects to the main GFWL page instead of the game's page.

I would post the correct links, but I don't see any WEI info on the game's page any more. Actually, there is hardly any info at all. For example, Gears of War (http://www.gamesforwindows.com/en-CA/Games/Gears-of-War-%28Windows%29/) -- apparently it only requires "1" for system memory. They really need to flesh out the game info on that site.

Someone please feel free to correct me because I've never had to do this on a PC game with GFWL:

But on both the XBOX and PC I've copied saves onto a USB stick for games that I had weird problems with.

Example: Test Drive Unlimited 2 had a weird bug at release that made a prompt show up that said your save was corrupted (since fixed and save files were fine) but to get around it I'd save a copy on the USB and then just load from that if I had issues.

Maybe something like that could work?

I'm looking to get a few PC games, mainly RE5 at the moment. I tried to see if i could run it using the link in the first post, so i select the game and then it stays on the "Gathering Information" page, which isn't a good sign :p.

I searched for the games at online stores and tried to find the requirements, which i couldn't. I did find a mini spec list on GAME.co.uk but it was pretty useless, mainly about download times. I did notice though it said it was compatible with XP + Vista, but i'm using W7. But does this actually matter? I know for a fact that Halo 2 Vista will run on W7 but will RE5 work too?

I also checked here http://www.microsoft.com/windows/compatibility/windows-7/en-us/Search.aspx?l=en-us&s=resident%20evil%205&type=Software to see if it will work on W7 but it doesn't have RE5, only RE4.

In short: Will RE5 GFWL work on Windows 7 and where can i find the requirements to run it?

I need some help, I just bought a laptop and wanted to see if I could play a few games so I went and checked on the systemrequirements link from the 1st post. I pass every single aspect except for the video card. The results show that I have a Mobile Intel(R) HD Graphics which doesn't support 3D and T&L. The problem is that I have 2 video cards on this laptop, the second one is a RADEON HD 6490M. How can I get the site to test with the second video card?
Any of you guys can tell me if it's a good card or not? It's been a while since I bought a computer so the specs are now complete jibberish to me...

Another question: since the topic started in 2007 is there any chance that they improved the GFWL service so that you can now play offline and earn achievements or is it still better not to?

JohnnyBravo

of course you can play in offline mode and get the singleplayer achievements; but but if you dont log on after a period of time (not necessarly the same game, just log on), the achievements youve won while offline will dissapear.

Great job, pants! Any games you all recommend to play on GFWL? I will be using my 360 wired controller though. Currently have halo 2, shadowrun (should be arriving any day now), looking to get Gears Of War but can't find it on retail (ebay & amazon prices are $60) so might just get it as a digital download from the marketplace. I've got osmos too, what's left to play? Got fallout 3 goty on 360 and resident evil 5 on 360 too.

Is there a list of compatible games for gfwl that'll work with the 360 wired controller? Tried google, no luck.

So I've been playing Halo 2 (PC) lately, and have gotten 2 achievements in the past two days. The gamerscore on my xbox is correct, as is the amount of achievements (showing at 23) and gamerscore (showing at 395), but when I click Halo 2 (PC) to look at the achievement the actual icons for the 2 achievements are missing and not "unlocked".

Is there anyway around this? Do I have to recover my own gamertag to have the tiles unlock? A PM or visitor's message would also really help, or I can check this thread in a few hours/days/weeks.

No, you need to buy a game instore with a case that's says games for windows LIVE (last 4 letters very important). Or you need to download them thru the games for windows live marketplace.

This is not correct, in most cases. You can buy most of the games off Steam and they will still be LIVE enabled. Many of the earlier ones don't support this, nor does Dark Void. I would ask on the forums to verify for each game though.

I noticed above someone saying the new batman will be GFWL? Is this confirmed as I heard that that had been dropped for the new game.

I am really hoping that the fact that GFWL is built into the core of windows 8 that that will mean that more (hoping ALL) PC games will end up having live achievements etc.

Yes they can, i have dirt 2, fable 3, dead rising 2 and Red Faction Guerrilla from steam. I would post on here first to be on the safe side asking if the game your after off steam can get you achievements, even if it's on the pc list.

I want to pick up World of Goo for the PC. I don't want to buy it from Microsoft for $20 when it's $10 on Steam and $7 on Amazon to download. Will either of these versions (Steam or Amazon) give me achievement points? And what do I have to do to link these games?

The Game for Windows marketplace version is live enabled and will give live achievements. The steam version is steamworks enabled and will give steam achievements. It looks like the Amazon version has no achievments.

So if you're wanting achievements to show up on your gamertag for world of goo you'll need to get the GFWL games on demand version. All you'll need to do then is when you play it sign in on the GFWL client with your gamertag and you'll get your achievements.

There are two kinds of GFWL activation:

Current method: Server-Side Activation, or SSA. This binds the CD key permanently to your GFWL account, similarly to Steam. Thanks to this feature, the games do not carry activation limits! On top of this, a new GFWL feature has been added: Zero Day Piracy Protection (or ZDPP). This is their attempt to prevent pre-release copies from being played, and it can only be applied to SSA games.
Legacy method: A simple CD key check. This still requires an Internet connection, but it does not tie the key to your account. This has an activation limit between 10-20 (usually 15), similar to the usual Microsoft products (such as Office). If you hit the limit, contact Microsoft support. With proper evidence they will give you a new key, but you are only allowed one more key. After that, you will need to buy the game again.
It should also be noted that GFWL is not supported worldwide. In the event that you bind an SSA key to an account that is not in a supported region, you will lose the key (and, consequently, access to the game).

A few months ago I started playing PC games on one of my gamertags and now I have a question.

A while back when I was playing GfWL titles while not connected to GfWL the achievements seemed fine until you synced them by connecting to GfWL. They jumped out of order, for example in Gears of War for Windows I ran the campaign and got most of the achievements, but it looks like I completed the game before completing Act 3 and 5 - hence to those two achievements being placed as "unlocked after Mercenary (completing the game)".

Like this when viewing my achievement list:
Complete Act 5 on Casual
Complete Act 3 on Casual
Mercenary
Complete Act 4 on Casual
Complete Act 2 on Casual
Complete Act 1 on Casual
Prison Breakout

Is this still the way it works on GfWL or has there been any updates to prevent that?

See ya.

did figure out how to get around my sound issue - when I plug in a pair of headphones to the headphone jack, and then remove them - the game switches to that sound output and I can hear the game.

My new problem is slowdown. During campaign it'll be fine, and then it'll drop the framerate to really low. Then it'll be fine. And repeat.

I don't know the problem. Seems to happen more when there are enemies around. I know my video card should be able to drive it and I have 8GB of RAM.

Are you sure that FGN4 was ever even released as a PC version? I can't find any information about it on net other than the image on x360a. For example EA's own site doesn't mention anything about it and it's nowhere to be found on amazon.co.uk or other European retail sites. TrueAchievements lists the EU version as an Xbox 360 game.

That's not too hard to check yourself since there's not that many digital only games anyway. I did it myself, but it depends from country to country what you can get from GfWLM, Steam etc. so unless someone checks it for every country there is no definite list.

Age of Empires Online & Microsoft Flight are now gone from Steam so if someone wants them I would act fast since GfWLM is the only place that still carries them. +You will use the same subscription and payment plans to play on Live as the normal 360 does. You can buy subscription cards or use the free trial cards. Any time you have paid for on your normal 360 account will carry over to your PC account. They are in essence the same exact account. Just think of it as playing on your tag, just on a different 360, except it is a computer... if that makes sense. If you do not have a Gold account on your 360, the GFWL service is free and gives Gold privileges to every user, even those with Silver memberships. This means you can play online without paying for Live service. The two systems also share Microsoft Points for use in purchasing games. All games on the PC can be bought directly with cash if you want though.

highlighting the part above i want to ask a question about:
so, let's say i want to self-boost the multiplayer achievements of street fighter x tekken using two separate PCs, does this mean i can install the game on both of them using my gold account, run the game on the 2nd PC using a silver/dummy account, and earn achievements with my gold/main account using the first PC?

so, let's say i want to self-boost the multiplayer achievements of street fighter x tekken using two separate PCs, does this mean i can install the game on both of them using my gold account, run the game on the 2nd PC using a silver/dummy account, and earn achievements with my gold/main account using the first PC?

As long as the game works on both PCs, yes. I don't see why not.

That's kind of a good idea lol... I have the disc version of SFxT, can I install on 2 PCs? Doesn't it need the disc to work?

I did a bit of double PC boosting for vanilla SFIV on disc. I think I just ejected the disc after the game started, allowing me to run it on both computers.

hmm... that answers it. but say i only downloaded a copy of the game from steam. does it mean other accounts cannot use it except for my main that downloaded it?

So with BlazBlue: Calamity Trigger losing GFWL functionality, if I buy a new copy and play it offline without downloading the patch, would I still be able to get achievements?
Because I've done that before with some offline GFWL games. I know the first post says not to go offline, but it's fine for me. Doesn't matter if it fails.

It shares the 360 list anyway, you could just play that.

But I honestly don't know if it will work on the PC anymore.

I find it easier to play games on PC, plus it's cheaper. Besides, if it doesn't, I won't bother with the Xbox version.

Thanks for the heads up though.

You'll have to look up a guide on how to do it, I don't remember the options off the top of my head but it's pretty easy.
You probably won't read this but for anyone else that is curious.

Hey, Mitch (I read that as Mitch, don't know if I ever told you that), so say someone bought Fable 2 and its DLC off Steam, which still uses GFWL. They could share their games with me so I could play it? The DLC has been discontinued, and I've put off buying it because I wouldn't be able to finish it.

I'm not familiar with Steam game sharing or how it works with GFWL, but from what I understand the Fable 3 DLC was never actually available through Steam. They sold the keys, but the content was redeemed and downloaded from GFWL. So since it can't download that content then you shouldn't have access to it via sharing.

I bought this one on disc off Amazon a few months ago. It never asked me to update, and connected to the GfWL client for achievements just fine. I have to say though this game is batsh1t crazy.

Who owns and can access the DLC and in-game content associated with a shared title?

A guest will have access to the lender's DLC, but only if the guest doesn't also own the base game. Guests may not purchase DLC for a base game they don't own. Any player may purchase, trade, earn, or otherwise acquire in-game content while playing a game, but in-game items cannot be shared between accounts. These items remain the property of the account that purchased or acquired them, whether borrowing or lending the base game.
Just to summarize for anyone that gets dizzy from too many words; if you don't buy the game and know someone that has the game+DLC then yes they can share it. If you own the game already, you can't use their DLC.

The DLC also has some problems and people that bought it can't redeem their codes, so they just told Lionhead they're gonna pirate the content they paid for in the sticky about the issue on their forums.

Never played batman arkham asylum on 360. Can I get GFWL achievements???Yes, GFWL is a different system from the 360 but they share a connection via Xbox Live.
EX: You don't need to play Call of Duty: Ghosts on the 360 to play it on the Xbox One, they're different systems.

One thing to note is that you will need to go out and buy a physical disc copy of the game to get achievements.
