Alright, there has been a large amount of people confused about the whole "Live Anywhere" / "Games for Windows" business, as well as achievements and Vista/System requirements for PC games. Here's the lowdown.

First, check out Microsoft's official Games for Windows site (http://www.gamesforwindows.com/en-US/Pages/default.aspx).

Then read on below for tips and information about this new system.

-----------------------------------
Common answers about PC games and achievements.

+If a game has achievements, it will be labeled "Games for Windows Live" on the box. See the list in the second post for all the games that currently have or have been announced to have achievements on the PC. If you don't see the word "Live" on the box, it WILL NOT have achievements. There is a very large "Games for Windows" line of games, but it is the "Live" marking that shows a certain game will have achievements.

+If a game is released for both the 360 and as a GFWL game, that does not mean they will be able to play against each other. Some games can, however. Games that are cross-platform will share one single achievement list, while games that are not will have two separate lists. This means if the game is cross-platform you will only be able to earn 1000 gamerscore, and can do so off either version. Games without it, you can earn 2000 gamerscore, once for the 360 version and once for the PC version. You have to play the games completely through on each platform though. You don't get to play one and get 1000, then just load up the other version and have all the achievements unlock automatically. See the second post for the distinction for each game.

+You will get achievement points just like you would playing on your 360, and using the same Gamertag, while on your PC. Once you load up a game on your computer for the first time, you will have to do something similar to an account recovery that downloads your Gamerscore and all your information onto your PC. Mine took about fifteen minutes, but it will be shorter for people with less information (aka smaller gamerscores). To do this, you just sign in with your Windows Live ID and password. From then on you'll log in automatically. If you've lost that information, you'd best contact customer service and hope they can find it for you. Once it is on your PC, you WILL NOT have to do an account recovery every time you switch between your 360 and PC. Unlike going from one 360 to another, the information can exist on both simultaneously.

+You will use the same subscription and payment plans to play on Live as the normal 360 does. You can buy subscription cards or use the free trial cards. Any time you have paid for on your normal 360 account will carry over to your PC account. They are in essence the same exact account. Just think of it as playing on your tag, just on a different 360, except it is a computer... if that makes sense. If you do not have a Gold account on your 360, the GFWL service is free and gives Gold privileges to every user, even those with Silver memberships. This means you can play online without paying for Live service. The two systems also share Microsoft Points for use in purchasing games. All games on the PC can be bought directly with cash if you want though.

-------------------------------------
Running games on your PC (Vista/XP/W7 System requirements).

To test if a game will work on your PC, check out this website:
http://www.systemrequirementslab.com/

+You must also have a fairly good computer for most games. For instance, a stock Compaq will not run the games. Vista gives a "Windows Experience Index" to the parts of your computer (ranging from 1.0 - 5.9). These being: Processor, Memory, Graphics, Gaming Graphics and Primary Hard Disk. Your overall score is not an average of these (as one would assume), but instead the lowest score of the five becomes your computer's base score. Example: four categories of 5.9, one category with 3.0 - your entire computer scores a 3.0, and might have trouble running games, though it depends highly on which category scored low.

+Games have a suggested base score to play, using your "Windows Experience Index" - I recently bought a stock Compaq (this one (http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=8295383&type=product&productCategoryId=pcmcat103700050060&id=1173577986795)) because my old system's motherboard was too old to run Vista. That got a 3.0 score, because the graphics card was crap. I switched in a good card from my old system and got a 5.9 graphics rating with a 4.3 overall rating (ATI Radeon X800XL), and both Halo 2 and Shadowrun play great, even though Halo suggests a 5.0 overall score - my graphics score seems to make up for any loss in the other categories.

+I would recommend no less than 2.4 Ghz processor speed and 1GB of memory. Shadowrun says it requires 2GB RAM, though it works fine on my machine with only 1GB. I can only assume in the future games will require more and more high-end parts to function well. If you're thinking about getting into PC gaming, I would say go big or go home. If you lowball it, you're going to find yourself upgrading parts sooner rather than later. As of December 2009, I now have a machine with a 3.2Ghz Quad-core processor, 8GB Ram with Windows 7 and games run beautifully. If you can afford it, and they are not that expensive these days (got this one for $800ish), I would definitely recommend going bigger off the bat.

--------------------------------
Accessories on the PC

+You can use your wireless controller on your PC, but only if you buy the "Xbox 360 Wireless Gaming Receiver for Windows" and download the correct drivers for it.

+You can not use the "Xbox 360 Play & Charge Kit" to use your wireless controller. Windows only recognizes this as a power adapter, so it will only charge through your PC, not allow gameplay.

+You can use a normal wired controller, but you will have to download some drivers for it.

+Once you plug your headset into your controller, Xbox Live will recognize it and automatically set it up to work.

+If the game has an image of a controller on the back, it supports the use of a 360 wired controller, or wireless controller with the above mentioned adapter. If not, you can go to http://fileforum.betanews.com/ and search for "Xpadder", which is a shareware program you can easily configure to support the 360 controller for any game.

-------------------------------------------------
Games on Demand service.

+As of December 15th, 2009 Microsoft has launched an updated version of their GFWL client. This now has full game downloads, including for the first time an Arcade service. At the website mentioned at the beginning of this post, be sure to download the GFWL client. From there you can purchase most of the PC games with achievements and grab yourself a free arcade game in Tinker.

-------------------------------------------------
Playing offline in GFWL games.

+Simply put: don't do it. If you play offline, the GFWL systems will have a very difficult time recognizing your earned achievements. On top of that, if you play on your 360 before connecting to Live you may lose your achievements altogether and have to redo them. You may get lucky and have no issues at all, but that is far from the normal experience. Again: do. not. play. offline.

Also one point to add to your shadowrun overkill statement. I haveseveral PC's, most of them with vista so i ahve tried on seperate setups, Shadowrun will play smoothly, hitch free, with everything on med and no antialiasing an filtering on 1 gig ram, 2 gig cpu, and a 7600gt. That makes it look and play identical to the 360 version. I don't understand why they put such a high requirments on the box its putting people off. They should bundle halo2 with vista as well that will get people to buy it. But saying that no one has to buy vista anyway. It great everyone should get it, people who made the xp crack good on them, im glad the system has been 'semi' broken, but to all the people who are obbsessing over it and slating vista when they havn't even used it...pull your finger out cos xp isn't a perfect operationg system and if microsoft are making games vista only to encourage them to use it then good on them. 'Pants Party' have you got lost planet, im thinking baout buying it but im not sure. i got the demo it seems great, but im still not sure. Im looking forward to the now relased LIVE titles.

I updated this a little bit. Microsoft finally launched an official Games for Windows site, that has all the games that are released and future releases for that banner. Each game has its own page (which I have linked from my current list of games with achievements), and the recommended/required System Requirements to play the games. The only thing it doesn't have on each game is whether or not the game supports achievements, so my list here will still be the official list for that.

Can this get a sticky?

Awesome FAQ. One question however, I've heard that the subscription levels [Gold, Silver] are different for Vista. My brother is getting a college laptop and I wanted to get him shadowrun and a headset for his birthday. I had heard that you can play online, but can't earn achievements with silver.

The Pants Party
07-26-2007, 06:10 AM
No, it's the exact same Live payment system and levels. Gold is the only way to play online, same as on the 360. You can even buy the subscription cards to apply to your account. They are in essence the same exact account, just pretend you're on a different 360. I'll be sure to add this stuff to the FAQ.

You should be able to. The "requirement" they give is sort of loose, so if you're not perfectly to it, but close, you should be alright. Unless the other parts of your comp are crap, but if you've got good ratings for everything else, I wouldn't worry about it.

Ok I had another idea but not sure how it would work, so if any one has an idea please let me know. I have two external hard drives that I use for media I was wondering if it is possible to install Vista on to a external hard drive that I could use with a broken desktop computer I have that has a decent graphics card... I don't have any idea what I'm doing though so please someone let me know.

Unfortunately, no. You either need to have an actual wired controller or the Wireless Gaming Receiver. For some reason Windows only recognizes the Plug/Play as a power cord. You can use it to charge your controllers through your computer, but you can't use it to play.

Do not use it! It's integrated into your chipset, meaning it uses different methods to deliver your graphics, and some other mumbo jumbo that causes it to stress the rest of your system! If at all possible, get something better.

The problem is I need a laptop for college. And I found a great deal on one that has this card. I don't plan on playing a ton of games. Will it hold up if I play games once in awhile?

Is there a big difference betwenn a 128MB NVIDIA GeForce 8400M GS and a 256MB NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT?

No, it's not. You use the same subscription as on your 360, just the $50/yr for Live.

Oh hell yeah! Shadowrun actually requires 256mb to be played with most of the settings that are on on 360. If you don't want AA and play at a lower res with worse shading and stuff, all the more power too ya. It isn't something to spend too much money on, you can always upgrade down the road once something like that becomes much cheaper.

Just a tidbit: Not all Windows Live ID's are Hotmail accounts. I have a Gmail Windows Live ID, as well as an email that I use from one of my domains. Both are legit Live ID's. You just have to register for a Live ID, not necessarily with a Hotmail account. (But those are the most common.)

The graphics could use an upgrade, and the processor is probably good, but it never hurts to upgrade over 2 ghz.

Pants could you add a section that shows what games have separate achievements for vista(Gears of war)and the ones which are also on 360 but the achievements count for both platforms(shadowrun)

The Pants Party
09-04-2007, 04:33 PM
Well, I'm sort of doing that now. Each game is linked to the achievement list for the game, so when the Gears achievements for PC are released, I would think they will be in a separate list since the 1250 cap has been hit for the normal game, so I will just link to the new list.

Where do you get this system rating from?

You are quite vague about what you are talking about. Taking a guess here but I think you are asking how you can tell if a game has achievements? You can tell by looking on the back of the box, in the column that lists how many players, it will say 'achievements'. This was posted in the FAQ in the first post.

RFT 123
10-17-2007, 05:51 PM
Not that. Some people have posted with stuff like this:

"Processor 4.6
RAM 3.9
Graphics 2.7
Gaming Graphics 3.1
Hard disk 4.7"

Where do you find out that?

Shinobi273
10-17-2007, 05:55 PM
Yeah sorry I thought about it and I realized it was actually obvious what you were talking about. If you go to the games for windows website (http://www.gamesforwindows.com/en-US/AboutGFW/Pages/gamesForWindows.aspx), click on game advisor, then click on support in the window that opens. Down that list it explains a little that the service scans your PC to determine the preformance rating.

RFT 123
10-17-2007, 06:02 PM
It doesn't seem to be scanning. Em...help?

You can add Viva Pinata to the list, it has the same achievements as the 360 version but they're on separate lists. Also:

Common question about PC games and achievements.
+If a game has achievements, they will be Vista exclusive. They games may also run on XP, but you will not be able to get achievements unless it is installed on Vista. It will be labeled "Games for Windows - Live" on the box, and have a small tag on the back that says "Achievements" where it lists the number of players and things like that. (See list below)

This isn't true for Viva Pinata, I'm playing it on XP and I've gotten 15 achievements so far and they've all been added to my gamer score.

The Pants Party

It's the same list as the normal retail title. The only way we could add it to the PC section is if it showed up as a different list, so we aren't going to do that unfortunately. Don't want to confuse people with two lists. The only ones under the PC section are ones that are only PC lists, not PC/360 lists.

If you already have a LIVE account, you can recover it onto your computer. So you have a GFW-LIVE account too. No extra cost. And, unlike when you recover a LIVE account on your Xbox, you can have your Live account exist on your Vista PC and your 360 at the same time. I believe that when you log one on, the other is signed out, though I'm not sure.

Also, Halo 2 Vista has a RECOMMENDED rating of 5.0. However, the REQUIRED rating is only 3.0. Halo 2 runs fine on my comp (3.2 thanks to crap GeForce 7300 LE graphics), I just have to set Level of Detail to LOW, and set the resolution low to get good framerate.

Also, with GFW-Live, you CAN use a 360 controller, whether by using a wired one or getting the Gaming Receiver. When using the controller, it really feels like your on 360. When not using a controller, the 'HOME' button does the same thing the big X does on the controller. However, unlike any other game you might use it for on your PC, the Guide Button will bring up the Guide in a GFW-LIVE game.

Also, if you plug your headset into your controller, you can use it as a speaker or a microphone on your PC! (It comes up as an additional audio device in Vista. You can use it as a speaker, but you don't have to) In the Settings in the Guide, you can specify which playback and which recording devices shoul be used for voice.

Also, you can use private chat in GFW-Live, including with a user on an Xbox 360! You can also listen to voice messages.

Also, Silver accounts CAN PLAY MULTIPLAYER on GFW-Live. (at least on H2V. Not sure about the upcoming Gears for GFW-Live). However, silver accounts can only unlock offline achievements, not the online ones. Also, silver accounts can't use vocie.

#1. For games that can be played on XP as well, (everything but Shadowrun and Halo 2), can you always get achievements on them when playing in XP?

#2. Please explain the double points thing/different lists thing more clearly.

#3. I think you should still add Shadowrun to the PC catergory on the main site, even if its just a note or disclaimer with link explaining that it's a shared list with the 360 copy. As it stands, it suggests there aren't any achievements for the game, or your website is outdated.

#4. Why isnt Universe at War in the PC catergory on the main site? It has achievements, right? It's not out for 360 either.

The Pants Party
01-04-2008, 11:03 PM
1. Yes, all games but SR/H2 can get achievements on XP.

2. You can play those games on your 360 and get 1000 points. Then you can play them on the PC and get another 1000 points. Check my card for instance, Viva Pinata is on there twice, once for the 360 version and once for the PC version.

3. If the game has the same list for the PC and 360, it can only be listed under one category or it will show as a separate checklist under the My360Achievements function. Then people will be confused and think they can get double points like the other games, when that is not true. Routine is looking for a way to do this, but it doesn't appear to be an option. Default is under the 360 (or "Retail") section, so that is where you will find those lists.

4. For UaW, the PC version is out but the 360 version won't be out until March or later. It is much like Shadowrun in that it has cross-platform play and achievements and only one list (meaning only 1000 possible, not 2000 like the other games). The reason it is not listed under the PC section is the same reason Shadowrun isn't, because of the My360Achievements function.

Hope that clears things up a bit for you. :)

deusfaux
01-05-2008, 06:01 AM
It does, thank you.

-So with U@W; it's just because you guys already knew that it was coming out for 360? Otherwise it'd already be up there in the PC section?

-I assume "Routine" is the handle of someone who does some coding for the site?

I wasn't aware of the my360achievements thing the site has set up - but I stand by my suggestion that still putting the games in the PC Catergory even by name only and with a note explaining the list is shared with 360 (And a link to the game on the retail 360 page) would make a lot of sense.

Otherwise a user has to do research like I did to understand all of it.

Especially with U@W where the PC game is out months before the 360 version, it not being there implies the game simply has no achievements.

That's a Geforce 1 card! No offense but that's something like 8 years old! Geforce 9 cards are coming out next month and a new line comes out every year.

does this mean that for Viva Pinata , you can get 1k twice for as total of 2k. But in shadowrun you can only get the 1k once ? So if i have Shadowrun and got achievements from it already and then i play it for the cpu i wouldnt be able to get achievements ?

AGP is a "slot" in your motherboard. Graphics cards, Sound Cards, Basically anything that "pokes out of the back of your PC at the bottom" used to run off AGP. Now you have AGP, PCI, and PCI-E. (In order of age)

If you don't know which kind of slot you have, you need to find out before even considering which card. A PCI card wont work in an AGP slot.
If you are using AGP, unfortunately you wont find a decent card cheap. However, if you're running PCI-E, I may have something in a box somewhere i can throw your way. So i'd have a look at your Motherboard manual which will tell you.

When you start up, something should be like "F10, bios". I'd have tech saavy friend walk you through it. Since your integrated graphics only have 64 mb right now and you have 2GB total, you could easily crank that up to 256mb of memory.

Hope that helps, i've been flipping through HP's website without a solution.

Edit: Upon further review, i think HP's bios is F1 or F2 during startup.

LegitLostLegend

I figured it out it was F10. But it only gave me the options of 32, 64, or 128. So I put it to 128. But on the little sticker in front of me it says witht up to 799MB shared cideo memory deliver sharp images for photo editing and more. I'm confused?

Edit- I rechecked all the games and I passed all besides Juiced 2 and Shadowrun.

Juiced 2- I could care less, I'm not really into racing games
Shadowrun- I could also care less, because I already have 1000 and still own the retail version

Since the lists are linked between 360/PC we can only put it in one of the categories. Considering the 360 is more popular here, that is where it is. You'll have to use that one.

Well it would be sweet to have the Indiana Jones game a 360 1000GS and a seperate PC 1000GS. Microsoft should realize that gamerscore = money so the wise thing to do would be to make a game on the 360 and the PC both have there own 1000 points which in turn equals more money, very smart if they do decide to go this way !

But that shot of the case looks to say LIVE in the blue just a little different then the rest. That game is coming out really soon so we will all know the answer to this very soon !

Update: Crytek community manager Alexander Marschal has posted on the Crysis forums (http://www.incrysis.com/forums/viewtopic.php?pid=366815#p366815) informing fans that the box art is not final and the "LIVE" functionality is also not confirmed.

"The packshot is not the final version, so do not pay too much attention on the details you see on there. It is a teaser how it may look like in the end. Additionally the "Live" symbol doesn't mean much," explained Marschal.

I actually doubt it will end up supporting it, but we'll see I guess.

Not sure if this is really where this should be but last time I had a Games for Windows question I was directed here.

I recently purchased a Mac Book Pro and loaded Vista via Boot Camp. BTW, my Mac got a much better experience rating than my previous Toshiba which had 4GB of Ram and an AMD X64 2.2GHz processor. Anyways, I tried loading Viva Pinata to Vista on my Mac today and the game errors out before it actually starts. Is this even possible or should I uninstall and re-install to try it out. If anyone is currently running a Games for Windows game on a Mac via boot camp please let me know what I am doing wrong. Thanks in advance.

Hey Pants,
Great thread, very informative. I have a question which I don't think has been asked yet? If it has already then I apologise.

Does the serial number of the PC game tie to your gamertag, or could I use the same copy of a game and get 1000 points on two separate gamertags?

Has anyone tried this yet? I'm tempted to get viva pinata and try it because I know my girlfriend will want to play it too. We have separate gamertags.

Just to say also I do have vista and a 5.6 Windows Score. Lucky me!
I built my own PC with a ATI x1950 Graphics card, which was the best value at the time and it's excellent.

The Pants Party

You'll be able to log out of your tag and have her sign in to play the same game. You could even install it on separate machines, but it should only allow one install to be active at a time.

I have now bought and tested viva pinata on two different machines with two different gt's. It's all working fine.

Obviously not using both machines at the same time.

The gamertag download and update download were both quite glitchy and took about 3 attempts each before they would download. At one point I had to leave the PC for about 20 minutes while it tried to sort itself out.

I think the games for windows interface is quite cool, but they need to get it all working more smoothly.

I also think all of the games that are 'Games For Windows' should have achievements. How hard can it be to program them in? Or add them using an update.

Very helpful thread, though I have a question. I went to the system requirement site and found out that I can play most games, including Crysis(which I found surprising). Albeit I can run most games, I fail to meet the recommended settings. Mainly because of three things. The lesser being Vista, since I don't have it. The other(mainly on Crysis only) RAM. The last one being my CPU. My CPU meets most minimum requirements, however I don't trust it too much. For example: I installed Kane's Wrath from a friend, I can run it, but it ends up crashing every ten minutes because of the CPU.

Now, my question is: is it cheaper to buy a new CPU(if so, which one) and install it(or have someone install it for me) or buy a whole new PC? Keep in mind that everything else is perfect, its just the CPU. I have this CPU: AMD Athlon(tm) 64 Processor 3700+

Im a Manatee
07-28-2008, 03:58 PM
Im going out on a limb and saying your processor is socket 939. That will really hinder your upgradability options since amd has moved on to socket am2 and am2+. Your processor is old tech... upgrading to a newer 939 processor would be not worth your while. Same goes if you were lucky enough to get a s754 3700+.

It would be in your best interest to build a new pc. I'd like to know what graphics card you're using in a 939 system. The processor is probably bottlenecking your performance.

Assuming its this one (http://www.notebookreview.com/default.asp?newsID=4460) you have no hope in hell of running it. The Intel graphics chip is very poor at running games.

Just go to THIS (http://www.systemrequirementslab.com/)link which is in the first post. It will tell you what the game needs to be able to run and what your computer actually has.

Thanks for the information.

Just got a half decent computer, so might start getting some gamerscore through PC gaming :)

PC gaming has taken a backseat to the console market for a long time, but there is a lot of good PC games besides the ones with achievements, trust me.

PC gaming has the most exclusive games, but the downside is that they can be hard to find at retail stores. If you have a good machine, you'd be happy when you find the good ones.

That new Dawn of War 2 game makes it seem that there is something is in the works for the rebirth of PC gaming, so to speak. I hope so, the achievements should help.

I can't understand why it seems like it's so hard for them to put achievements on a computer game. We've got many games that are the same on both PC and 360, but usually only the 360 version gets the cheeves.. why?

Because most games that are on both the pc and the 360 are not in the Games For Windows lineup. If they were then they would have the achievements. examples like Far Cry 2, Prince of Persia, Call Of Duty: World At War, etc

World at war is a games for windows title.

For them to add achievements the developer must also use live's matchmaking system. Most PC gamers that I have spoken to about the matter prefer other types of matchmaking.

Depends on what you mean by "download." If you purchase the game through the Steam software or another licensed dealer of legit copies, then yes. If you try to torrent it, most likely no (though I have not tried and obviously advise against it).

It is a know bug in the game DRM. Apparently they set a "final" date in the DRM, not allowing the game to run after the date. I do not remember now which date it was (I think it is January 30th, 2009), but you can solve it by setting the clock of your pc to any date from last year. Yes, it sucks to mess with your pc clock each time you want to play the game. Epic is aware of the problem, but I do not know if there will be a patch for it.

Pants, a new entry for you (actually a Japanese release): Legend of Galactic Heroes (Ginga Eiyu Densetsu). It was released October last year and it does have a page here, however it is listed under japanese games:

http://www.xbox360achievements.org/g.../achievements/ (http://www.xbox360achievements.org/forum/../game/ginga-eiyu-densetsu/achievements/)

So Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War II isn't the first windows-only Live game (well it is in the Western).

Ginga Eiyu Densetsu is extremely hard to find though.

Being able to find Dawn of War II will be much simpler.

Not hard, but expensive:

But if you know someone in Japan, it is easy and cheaper:

Well, you will need a mouse...but yes. No GFWL title requires a game pad, although many of them support gamepads.

Yes, you can use the key on more than one machine.

My friend has Fallout 3 and has installed it to his PC and is getting achievements from it. If he lent it to me, I could install it to my laptop and use the same key on the manual to get on Live with it so that I could unlock the achievements too?

Because he is adamant that it will not work, and I've told him before that I'm sure it would. But it's because we have different Gamertags, and this is where the problems arise.

The Pants Party
02-12-2009, 11:11 PM
It works fine. I lent my copy to Creech and he installed it and got all the achievements after I did. He sent it back and I played the DLC with no issues with it still installed on both our machines.

Thank you very much, my friend will be seeing your post, while I sit there saying "Soooo? Give the game to me!" ;)

EDIT: Another question? Could I just go to his house and sign into the game on my account and get the achievements, or isn't there an option on GFW games? I haven't ever noticed one, but I didn't pay much attention when I played The Club :p

You say that when you first log into windows live you will need to download the data for your tag, does this mean that when you go back to your 360 you will need to recover your tag to obtain the achievements that you earned on the pc?

The Pants Party
04-12-2009, 12:23 AM
Nope, unlike going from one 360 to another, you can have your tag on both your 360 and your PC without the need to recover it.

thanks, but would that mean that if you get an achievment while offline on 360 then you would have to go online on 360 before you go on pc?

"Steam achievements" are a different system than the normal Xbox Live Achievements. They are only available through the Steam Network and not Xbox Live enabled games and their points don't go on your gamercard or anything like that.

I don't think so, but what would be the point? The entire point of having it is to sign into Live, which you would be doing on a game...

So lets say I have Halo2, I load it up and download my profile to the PC. Next day I load Gears of War, do I have to download my profile again?

Also I would like to buy some used games, will used games have any restriction on earning achievements?

The Pants Party
05-29-2009, 07:25 PM
No to both questions.

Once you have your tag on your PC, it exists on both your 360 and PC simultaneously, and for all games. Used games, so long as the person includes the CD Key to install them, will have no issues.

Actually, you can download the Games for Windows Live Marketplace application and that will then let you download your gamertag to the PC without a game, and it lets you purchase DLC for PC games.

Not all used games can be installed. Generally, you can call the publisher and get the count reset if you have a used copy that exceeds the number of installs, although you do have to lie to get them to do it. Say that you upgraded your home PC and are simply installing it on your new system and will never use it on your now defunct old system.

However, any game that installs through Steam as well as GFWL is reliant upon Steam to do this, and they refuse without a copy of the receipt showing that it was purchased new. An example of this is Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War II.
