There's really nothing spoilerish about this information...released via multiple press sites, the following information for Season 6 has been announced:

http://www-tvline-com.vimg.net/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/MCHall_CHanks_300110509121310.jpg

Colin Hanks (pictured above) will be joining the cast for Season 6 for the full twelve episode run. His character, Travis, will be a "extremely intelligent expert on artefacts" claims each and every news website. A few have thrown out the character's name while others haven't...but this character will be "tied to a series of grisly murders in Miami". This may set him up as the new main antagonist, however...creators claim that this season will not just have one main antagonist, rather a more overarching story that won't necessarily depend on that character...however, this does not rule out the complete possibility of a Big Bad.

For those of you who dont' know, Colin Hanks is the son of acting-legend Tom Hanks and has appeared in various movies such as Orange County and TV shows including Mad Men and The Good Guys.

Edward James Olmos (pictured above) is also joining the season as a university professor in religious studies. Considering that another Actor (Mos, formely Mos Def) is joining as a ex-con gone "man of god", the two may be related. He may also be one of the villains this time around.

Mos (formerly Mos Def, for whatever reason he's now Mos) who is pictured above joins the season as an ex-convict gone religious Man of God who continously is in the middle of Miami's dark criminal organizations. He is set for a multiple-episode run, so it is likely he is one of the central villains along with a possible connection to Edward James Olmos's character.

Billy Brown (pictured above) joins the cast of Season Six as Mike Cutler. This character is straight out of Chicago, transferred to Miami Metro where he immediately starts ruffling feathers. The character is described as being very no-nonsense in attitude complete with a BS detector, thus making him fairly similar to the role of Sergeant James Doakes in Season 1 and 2. It is unknown if he will be primarily focused on Dexter...or the rest of the department this season, maybe as Debra's antagonistic counterpart.

Aimee Garcia (pictured above) will be joining the cast as Jamie Batista who is the kid sister to Angel Batista, one of the show's leading characters played by David Zayas. In a role most surprising, she will actually be replacing Sonya (Season 5's mysterious Irish Nanny) as Harrison's new caretaker. Considering some sources claim that Episode 2 (Once Upon a Time...) of Season 6 has to do with an elementary school, it is possible that Harrison has aged a few years since his 1st birthday at the end of Season 5. If this is so, then she will be watching over the toddler while Daddy-dearest kills unsuspecting serial killers in the night. However, considering she is Batista's sister, there is a chance that he may find out about Dexter's dark secrets from her...

Another new character, Louis, has been confirmed as a buddy of Masuka's, a new intern to the Homicide department. Described as a caucasian male in his 30's, he is set to be "attractive in his own way" and may be just as "humble" as his friend.

Dexter executive producer Scott Buck will take the reigns of Showtime’s serial killer serial starting with its 6th season. He’ll be replacing Chip Johannessen, who ran the show in 2010. Buck has been working on Dexter since its second season, most recently as Johannessen’s number two.
While Dexter (http://screenrant.com/tag/dexter/) has consistently topped the ratings for Showtime and the fifth season has bested its own viewership records, critics and fans have had a lukewarm reaction to this year’s run. Screen Rant deemed the finale (http://screenrant.com/dexter-season-5-finale-review-aco-91815/comment-page-3/#comments) and the season overall “acceptable,” and readers’ comments seem to echo that. According to Deadline Hollywood (http://www.deadline.com/2010/12/scott-buck-tapped-as-dexter-showrunner/), Buck has a good rapport with the show’s writers, all of whom will return next year.

Scott Buck has been a co-executive producer for Dexter since 2007 and has also written a handful of episodes. He’s also worked on HBO’s Six Feet Under as a supervising producer. Given his writing on various previous episodes, we may see more of his work in upcoming scripts. Chip Johannessen was apparently well-regarded by the crew, but Buck has been determined to be a better pick. Prior to Johannessen, Dexter was run by Clyde Phillips, who was an executive producer for the first four seasons and has remained a consultant for the fifth. It’s unknown what parts Johannessen or Phillips will play as the series continues.

Last week, the network detailed some casting information (http://screenrant.com/dexter-season-6-casting-details-benk-113458/) regarding three new members to the Dexter (http://screenrant.com/tag/dexter/)family, which undoubtedly raised many questions as to how they might fit into the overall story arc of the impending season. Though nothing emerged in terms of who the central villain might be, or which of the characters (if any) would discover Dexter’s ‘dark passenger,’ the guessing games have certainly commenced.

Speaking at the 4th Annual Television Academy Honors in Beverly Hills, Showtime president David Nevins gave a few tidbits regarding what we can expect from the new season.

“Dexter this season will be in some ways a return to the Dexter that you’ve seen in the early seasons. There’s a really interesting story and journey that he’s going to be on this year. There’s going to be some degree of getting back to his roots.”

According to Nevins, getting Dexter back to his roots means touching once more on the sibling relationship between Debra Morgan (Jennifer Carpenter) and her adopted brother.

“There will be a microscope on the Deb/Dexter relationship this season. Over time you’re going to see that relationship evolve and change, no questions about it.”

Of course with a comment like that, it’s easy to begin speculation that Dexter’s secret will finally be revealed to his sister, but he could also be touching on Deb’s relationship with Joey Quinn (Desmond Harrington), and the fact that he and Dexter don’t exactly see eye-to-eye.

Dexter has always had to play both sides equally in each season, carefully balancing the serial killer aspects with the relationships among the supporting cast. Occasionally, like in season 4 (http://screenrant.com/dexter-season-4-finale-review-discussion-aco-37524/), focusing on a main villain has brought the show serious accolades – but this time around Nevins hints that Dexter’s antagonist won’t be a Trinity or Ice Truck Killer.

"It is not one big bad. There’s one interesting story that will move through the season, and it will be cast very interestingly, but it’s not exactly that one person.”

With luck, what Nevins means is that season 6 will be telling a more integrated story, blurring the lines between the personal life of Dexter Morgan and his overwhelming homicidal tendencies. This alteration to the well-established formula of the show helped to make the past season its most successful yet, and may prove to be a sign of things to come.

Good to hear some news finally. I just hope S6 is more enjoyable than S5 was, because that was quite underwhelming compared to the rest of the seasons, IMO. It was never going going to live up to the high standards of S4, anyway.

Doesn't matter who they place as the big villain, no one will ever top the unforgettable John Lithgow and Christian Camargo.

agreed. He did such a good job playing his role which is why season 4 is my favorite, besides the fact that it's the most intense.

Although i still have yet to see season 5 since i don't have showtime >.<

This is looking to be a very interesting season.
Hopefully it exceeds that of season 5 and it would be better if it exceeds season 4. Though I doubt anything will be able to top John Lithgow's performance in season 4.

I'm excited for this to start. Usually when I watch a t.v series it gets stale or drifts away from why i originally liked it. I kind of feel that way with The office (American Version) right now because I feel like they're rushing everything. Dexter... never gets old with me. They keep it fresh, exciting and i'm always on the edge of my seat. Can't wait for the new season to start.

That's great news, thank you. Wasn't Olmos that badass karate sergeant in Miami Vice back in the day? I love that guy

I really hope it's better than season 5...

I can't wait, that's all I can say. I have complete faith in the staff at Showtime. They never disappoint with Dexter so I'm super pumped for this season.
