WOW where did this come from, seriously! i'm a 2nd degree blackbelt in karate. been doing this for almost 40yrs. so here's what i think of this.

first off my score, easily a 10+/10. yes its that good!

EVERYTHING i would teach you is in here! damn i cant believe how well done this is!

the lady is a true blackbelt & teaches you real moves!

after you do a class/event. goto the vids & watch as you unlock them.

great advice like how to make a proper fist. stances & so much more.

now go back to same event. do what you learned in the video. huge difference & improvements to strikes, blocks, extra.

you unlock reflex mode, cardio & so forth as you do the classes. even balancing is in here!

this is the best fitness/ self defense vid/game i've ever seen. it even beats out billy banks taibo boxing cardio workout series!

this is a must buy if you seriously want to defend yourself & stay in shape!

the advice given is sound. everything about this is accurate. just remember to watch the vids often!

i urge everyone to at least rent this & see for yourself. awesome job ubisoft! better than the yourshape series too. even beats ufc!

message me if you need to know more :)

Thx a lot for this review! never could imagine it would be that good. Going to buy it tomorrow after reading this. i love the your shape game, i love the ufc. I know that itīs not the best workout you can get but these kinect games keeps me motivated or more or less the achievements does.

Sadly work takes all my time, and the small amount of time i get is dedicated to COD right now^^. But anyway, tomorrow iīm buying your shape and this.

So i understand that itīs good from the "self defense point of view". But is it any challenging when it comes to a workout?

yes it is very challenging, let me break it down for you.

class mode, for lack of better expression, is where you learn self defense.

reflex mode has you dodging punches extra. sounds easy but gets very real really fast!

balance gives you exercises so you dont stumble & fall. ie when kicking for example.

cardio mode is your workout mode. think ufc & yourshape & you get the idea.

overall do everything & watch the videos. the videos are extreamely important in understanding how to do things properly! cant stress that point enough!

off topic my time is now on skyrim! there goes my life, lmao.

but i'm still gonna fit this in before i do skyrim each day.

Thanks for your review, Panic.

I'm a Police Lieutenant, very fit, and very much a defense tactics specialist (as most police officers are), so I'm eager to see how "real" the training is --- although I explicitly trust your review as an expert on the subject matter.

I'll respond back with my review after I purchase it and play for a bit.

awesome i look forward to your review :). as for mine, please keep in mind to watch the videos after you unlock them. this is crucial to understanding inportant ellements. things like making a fist, stances, palm heel strikes and so forth.

also do the other stuuf as well. the reflexes & balance portions.

reflex reminds me of sparring. very well done but it does tell you which way to dodge. though my reflexes being fast. i found myself responding faster than the game could say which way to dodge, lmao.

install it to your hard drive helps increase load speed. thus keeping it on par to the actual real thing.

keep in mind to visualise your opponent when doing the classes.

ie hold your arm out like its being held for real. strikes, blocks extra, same thing.

if you have any challenges, let me know. i'll see if i can help you. i found it to be very responsive.

i believe it can be used in real situations. though classes are better.

this will at least give you a fighting chance. the goal is to get away, not stay & fight!

i use the wii so please be kind of my time. its hard to type on lol.

so heres more info for you. i decided to walk you through a portion of this game.

remember its self defense & NOT a game! 123kinect gave a bad review because the guy wanted to learn martial arts.

so heres a breakdown of how this game will help you defend yourself. DO NOT USE FOR PERSONAL GAIN!

ok so you have 8 classes or more. each class has a theme. within this theme is at least 8 lessons. heres an example.

theme = grabs so theres 8 sessions with 8 different types of grabs to get away from.

heres how that works. session 1, class 1. how to escape a wrist grab. its broken down into 4 parts.teaches you step by step then gets you to do it on your own.

1) break free of wrist hold. 2) move arms outwards to swing them free. 3) cuped hands strike to ears. 4) kick to inner thigh/knee. 5) hammerfist strike to groin.

you do these moves individually in seperate phases. then apply to real life situation. this part you do all moves which is timed. it then grades you on performance, technique & time taken.

an A+ is best. remember this is one session out of 8 in class 1 of at least 8. now after you've done all sessions in a class. go check your vids! this is extreamely important & cant stress enough to watch these!

the 1st ones will have. welcome, how to make a fist, hammerfist strike, palm heel strike, stances, kicks, strikes & a bunch of other stuff very important on understanding how to do what you just learned better & proper!

after watching vids go back & apply what you learned. notice the difference in technique of punches & such.

do these drills everyday! so it becomes second nature.

so after class 1, session 8. you should know the following.

all types of grabs from front to back. side, front & back kick. elbow strikes, finger nails, lots of strikes, standing proper, proper fist, proper way to throw punch is from waist/hips.

you should have 1st reflex class open too. the only thing left locked is 1st balance class.

now thats a TON of self defense training in just 1 class! so you can imagine whats in store for you as you finish each class!

remember this is self defense intened to teach you to get out of the situation. this is NOT a martial arts class! this is a hit & run tactic. do NOT stay to fight. run & call the police!

now you also get reflexes classes, balance & cardio done the same way.

now reflex = it tells you which way to dodge. but if you watch animation of attack. you can see shoulder moving forcasting a strike.

so it too is realistic. i could go on about this class, balance & the rest. but i think you get the idea.

remember to watch those vids! check back often & practice daily to stay limber & not rusty.

a rule of thumb is if you have to think of what to do. its already to late. so practice & make it instict!

if you need more let me know & thanks for reading!

i use the wii so please be kind with grammer & such. :)

i'll continue where i left off. after i'm dons. could someone copy & paste all of them into one thread? thanks in advance :)

rehearsal = is where you go to practice everything you have learned so far.

balance = taichi. this is for a good warmup.very relaxing, calm & cool sounds & visuals.

cardio = heres a example of one session.

start by walking 1 foot forward then next. now back again like square dancing.

eventually you do punches, strikes & all sorts of kicks. ie front, back side, & knee strikes.

its a more advanced version of taibo cardio boxing.

reflexes = dodging, blocking & striking training partner. heres how it works.

1 session you'll be dodging punches. in more advanced sessions you'll be doing the following.

blocks upper, lower, mid section, with both hands or each individually. you'll also have to avoid footsweeps too. as well as do round house kicks & punches.

also leaning & dodging attacks. so all kinds of strikes & kicks plus avoiding attacks.

heres how i suggest you play this.

1) balance this is nice way to warmup. 2) cardio to get you ready for class. 3) self defence class. here is your training & unlock mode. 4) reflexes here you'll improve your coordination & such. 5) rehearsal you can practice what you've learned so far. 6) balance to cooldown. remember to strech too.

so thats everything. i would like to request someone copy & paste all my posts for this review/ mini road map.

my thanks to whom helps me organise this. make sure to include all 3 parts of review/overview of game.

remember to watch those vids too. this will help you if you practice 6 days a week min of 1hr each. i recomend 2 1/2 hrs is what i do.

this will then be second nature in 2 months. you'll be able to defend yourself decently. but you must stay with it.

some things not covered you should know.

1) breathing this is very important. use your diaphram & always exhale out all air when striking or avoiding attacks.

this keeps you from getting winded. 2) grip floor w/feet until toes turn white. this helps keeping you stable & rooted like a tree. 3) stance

this should be shoulder width apart. one foot behind other matching blocking/striking arm.

legs slightly bent in & squeeze them together with your inner thighs.

this prevents a kick to groin from between legs.

it creates a suction that traps the opponents foot. in fact it'll stay there till you relax your legs.

remember to use low block with forearm for straight groin shots in this stance.

well thats everything. could someone put all 3 parts together for me into 1 thread? thanks in advance & hope all this helps you :)

you may copy/paste this to other sites. but give me credit for my hard work. thanks in advance

Hey man thanks for the review. I was thinking about getting UFC Trainer but this seems interesting too, buy what I've read around is that UFC is for cardio / reflexes / fit is that right ? Self Denfense show you moves.

What would you recommend for a total beginner ? what are your opinions for the UFC Trainer ?

Thanks.

i think i did a review on UFC but not sure.

ufc is good, great cardio & decent reflexes. it doesnt teach you how to defend yourself though.

both are good games but if i could only get one it'd be self defence. it has way more to offer & done by ubisoft. who is known for their yourshape series.

ufc has you ducking & hitting mitts. also has a good workout with situps, crunches, push ups extra. but no self defense.

so its a matter of if you want self defence or not. both are good but only one teaches self defence.

the only proablem i had with ufc was. when i'd do pushups, it wouldnt work. because it makes you face the sensor. so you lose that distance. my head & shoulders were red, not green. so it didnt pick me up.

the rest of the game was fine & worked great.

i own them both & recommend them. :)

Thanks for all the info Panic. I've been waiting for this to arrive at my local gameshop here in Europe. The title on the cover has changed a bit, but I'm sure it's the same game.

Your info and review made me order this today. Thanks fo all the input.

The reflex training is the most important part of the game for me. I don't know of any other game that trains kicks.

Just in case anyone else was browsing this game looking for an 'honest review' I'll thrown in my two cents - the game is crap. Aside from potentially giving people a false of confidence (though really, who would expect to learn proper self-defense from a video game), it also encourages bad form through punching and kicking into the air at high speed which is murder on the joints. A practitioner would be far better to take some lessons and put in time on a medium weight bag than play this game.

In terms of the fun factor and achievements, this game is rated a 3/10 for difficulty, but if you're not that coordinated you'll find the cardio a challenge, and if you're not that flexible, the kicking section of reflex training will be tough. In general, there are far too many loading screens which really kills the fun factor, and then there is the usual minigame, struggling with the Kinect's detection capabilities.

I've not quite achieved 1000 yet, but can't wait until I do so that I can say goodbye to this title forever.

For my honest review this game sucks on all levels

its not really a game anyway more an instruction video, get 5 stars and level up yeah no fun at all

and kinect reads like shit , no other kinect title made me move and re-tracked my position more than the few hours into this

achievements are mostly easy progression ones so in that aspect it is better than ridiculous your shape 2012
