The theme of war has always been a part of gaming. These games revolved around the times of WWI, WWII, Vietnam War, Desert Storm and so forth. And some of these war themes have been overwhelmingly recycled over to the point where gamers just get tired of it. But despite this, there have been some fantastic games that were developed and based on these themes. So here's the list of the best warfare games.

10. Vietcong

For a FPS game based on the Vietnam war conflict, this game is the best by far. The scripted gameplay and NPC interactions created an environment that was fun to play and the graphics were pretty darn good for its time. The music and sound effects weren't too shabby either!

9. Tom Clancy (Ghost Recon, Rainbow Six, Splinter Cell)

From Rainbow Six, Splinter Cell and Ghost Recon, these games from the Tom Clancy series has produced some of the best warfare games. To date, there are 6 Rainbow Six titles, 4 Ghost Recon titles and 6 Splinter Cell titles. This is one heck of an accomplishment. It doesn't end there, a brand new title for this franchise is expected to be released sometime in 2008; Tom Clancy's End War.

8. Brothers In Arms

Although the WWII theme was being used from left to right and all around, this game managed to pull it off. It was a FPS based on WWII about the true story of the 502nd Parachute Infantry Regiment of the 101st Airborne Division. What made this game stand out was its team command system which was quite unique and innovative for this genre.

7. Total War (Series)

For RTS games, this title brought the true meaning of ancient times warfare and tactics with incredible gameplay and graphics. It created an atomsphere like no other RTS tactics game you've played before.

6. Company of Heroes

There's no doubt that this is the best WWII themed RTS game to date! Not only was the gameplay exciting to play but the graphics was absolutely fantastic for this genre. Unfortunately the downside was that you only played the American perspective for the singleplayer campaign. This game can definitely be made into a FPS!

5. Battlefield (Series)

Battlefied 1942 broke into the scene with its WWII themed FPS game. It was one of the best WWII first-person shooter which emphasized on its multiplayer mode. As with the success of BF1942, the series spawned several sequels which were also equally successful and each one was based on a different war theme or setting.

3. Command & Conquer (Series)

As for startegy warfare games, C&C exploded in this genre. Command & Conquer is simply one of the best RTS warfare games. And the original C&C was one of the first games during its time to use live-action cut scenes which were pretty awesome. The series produced several expansions and sequels which were a hit.

2. Medal of Honor (Series)

Medal of Honor: Allied Assault began the invasion of WWII themed games. It is one of the best WWII first-person shooter this genre has seen. The level where you storm Omaha beach is just like a replica scene from Saving Private Ryan and is one of the most intense and well-executed scripted gameplay in shooter history. This series continued to produce many expansions and sequels for this franchise with the latest being Medal of Honor Airborne.

1. Call of Duty (Series)

One of the finest FPS games that was ever made based on WWII warfare. As with each sequel or expansion, it is always guaranteed to be packed with intense gameplay action. Now with Modern Warfare, the call of Duty series is taking a different direction but from the looks of it, the same gameplay elements that made this franchise so good is still there!

my favorite series of all time has been put #1 love that game. The only problem is that all the good COD games were PC exclusives excluding COD2 which also made it to the 360. the Original and United Offensive were the 2 best titles in the series

Yeah, I haven't played Vietcong yet. I should check it out.

I'm surprised that the Tom Clancy games are so up there. I'd thought they'd be in at least the top three.

Well I personnally think the Total War should be higher on that list and the Command Conquer one a bit lower.
I have to agree about Compagny of Heroes though for being the best RTS game about WWII

Good job on the thread ;)

While we're talking about RTS games, I wonder why they didn't include Supreme Commander in the list. I half expected it to be #1.

If you don't understand why it should be, look it up.

I agree, and MoH shouldn't too, Allied assault was a good game, but the other one pretty much sucked :p

Yeah Allied Assault was a pretty good game but I still don't think it deserves to be number 1.

Tom Clancy Games should definitely be a lot higher for me, since they are very original in their own ways. Honestly, WW2 has been done to death, which is why COD and MOH shouldn't be so high up, Modern Warfare and semi-future warfare is still pretty new for me. Also, I think they should stick up Starcraft and Warcraft too, definitely more fun than half the stuff in that list.
