Subtitles. Do you have them On or Off? Or perhaps your 1 of those people that are not bothered If their on or not.

Personally everytime I boot up a new game, I'll go onto the settings and make sure their turned on. It's been quite the habbit of mine. I think I just don't like the thought of misunderstanding or not hearing dialogue during cut-scenes.

Yeah, always enable subtitles, preferably English ones.
English is not my first language, and especially during long conversations I tend to get distracted by what's happening on screen. Subtitles help me to keep focused and aware of what is going on in detail.

I've always got them on. Sure they block a small portion of the screen and they do distract from cinematics and gameplay, which kind of bugs me, but not as much as misunderstanding dialogue and not knowing what is going on. As soon as the consoles can equalize their volume within the game and adjust for varying levels of noise in my house, I'll shut off the subtitles. Until then, I'll enjoy knowing what everyone is saying.

Always on. Even with a great set of headphones and perfect hearing, I like to make sure I don't miss something.

Always turn them on when available. I do the same thing with DVD's. I don't have particularly bad hearing, I just like to have them there. I'm actually disappointed when games (Or movies T.V shows) don't have them.

Off. They distract me. Sometimes if there's a scene I for some reason had a hard time hearing I may go back and put subs on and watch it again. But only If I'm really interested.

I usually have them on because having three kids it can get rather loud in my house.

First thing I do when I start a new game.

I played Gotham City Impostors demo and it didn't have subtitles, so I just stopped playing and didn't buy it, even though I really wanted to. There was too much talking and I didn't know what to do. Had to have my girlfriend help, and it was too much work. Too bad. Looked like a fun game.

Exactly this. I like to know what is being said because sometimes, there's an accent you just can't quite understand.

For movies, I don't mind if they're on or not but I would prefer them to be off.
Games on the other hand, I keep on.It drives me insane if I don't know what people are saying.I like to hear every piece of dialog when I'm playing.

I usually listen to music while I play games, aside from Fall Out. So I turn the sub titles on so I have some sense of what is going on during the story of the game I am playing.

DecadentBeaver

I'm not bothered. If a game has them on as default I leave it, if not, I leave it. The only time I will turn them on, is if my insomnia is kicking in and I'm gaming late at night with my missus asleep next to me. But I'm fine if its on or off. Strong accents don't affect me understanding what's being said.

Guess I'm part of the select few. Find I get distracted and just focus on the text versus the scene.

I leave them on, and get annoyed when I don't have the ability to put them on. Matter of fact I think I remember just stopping in the middle of a game because I couldn't see/hear what was going on. Singularity maybe?

HylianNarwhal
07-01-2012, 10:48 PM
Not bothered, if dialogue is likely to be important I'll be paying attention (usually).

Had to turn out-of-cutscene subtitles on in FFXIII-2 which I had off for most of the game while running around Academia to try and locate Captain Cryptic, the elusive quizmaster.

07-02-2012, 12:11 AM
If the option is there, I like them "ON". I'm not hard of hearing or anything, but I don't know. I guess just in case there's noise around and I can't hear what they're saying, I can at least read what they're saying.

EliteShadowMan
07-02-2012, 01:07 AM

Normally have them on, so I can turn the volume down late at night and not bother the neighbours. I can also read faster than the game can talk so I can read all the text and quickly get through the conversations.

In addition to subtitles, actually, now that I remember, the Valve games have "closed captions for the hard of hearing" and spell out every sound effect, too.

I'd leave that on in TF2. Made a huge difference when playing in the middle of the night with the sound off.

I almost have to have subtitles in a game. I will then mute my tv and watch netflix or a movie on my other tv.

Drewdude1023

In games, I leave them on because there is a lot of missible dialogue. In movies, I get pissed if they're on because I can understand and follow everything in them much better than in games. However, having a sister with a hearing disability has led me to tolerate them in movies more.

I do find subtitles slightly distracting from what's playing out on screen especially in film. But with video games I either have them off and concentrate or have them on while music is playing, where I miss a couple of important words even though the music is mostly instrumental.

Always prefer to have subtitles on for gaming. If fact, I get very aggravated when a game doesn't have the feature. When it comes to movies and tv shows, I usually keep them off since it's a distraction from whatever story I'm trying to follow.
