View Full Version : Xbox 8: Opinion on next console name?

So Microsoft has been buying up Xbox8 domain names (they could just be protecting themselves). If the new console was called the Xbox 8, what is your opinion of that name?

Edit: In case anyone didn't know, "Xbox 8" might be a way to tie in with the new Windows which is named "Windows 8." That's what the "8" might refer to (though I'm hoping it might also have 8GB of RAM -- lol).

Maybe they're going to turn the 8 on it's side, to make it into the "infinity" sign and call it Xbox Infinity! I like that!

Not really sure. Doesn't sound too catchy to me. Would prefer something else but ultimatley I'm not overly bothered what they call it. Within reason.

Well they could do worse. And it doesn't really concern me as I can't see myself buying it anyway.

That would be amazing. They could even design the infinity symbol into the console. The power button would be inside one of the holes. USB ports would be in the other. Lol.

From everything I have read, the 8 is more closely linked to the OS. Windows 7 is out right now.

I don't care what a system is called as long as I enjoy the games, and experience on it.

Well, the 360 was a full circle and the 8 are two full circles (or infinite) so it makes some sense. Don't like the number 8 the way it's pronounced (Xbox Eight sounds too much like Xbox Aid), it would be cooled if they use the 8 as the infinity symbol.

Xbox 8 - Hell no and makes absolutely no sense - It's the 3rd xbox NOT 8th!

Xbox Infinity - Pretty cool - They would have to get Toy Story's Buzz in on the adverts for it! To Infinity and beyond!!!!

I updated my OP. The 8 might be a way of associating the new console with the release of Windows 8. They will both probably run off the same Metro interface and probably other features that I'm unaware of.

Out of curiosity, I searched Xbox Infinity and found this...

Nice find. I was thinking they should've not named Halo 4's multiplayer ship the Infinity. They should've waited til Halo 5 and released it along with the Xbox Infinity (if that's what it's gonna be named).

It's MS protecting their IP.

Coincidentally, or not, this current generation of machines is referred to a "7th gen", ergo, next Xbox would be "8th gen":

It does not make a difference to me what it is called, as long as it improves upon the existing product in ways that is worth the money it will cost....then it is all good to me.

I like Xbox 8. It would go with windows Phone 8 and Windows 8. I would not be surprised at all if The next Xbox would run a version of Windows 8 obviously making use of the new Metro interface which I love :p

Windows 7 is really Windows 6.1 (Vista). Because Vista was crappy, they went with Windows 7 to make people think it's a lot better and not as crappy.

I don't care about the name. Just a name. It's the product that gets me.

Yay, the new Xbox name rumour mill starts up. Again. As long as the games are good, they could call it "Xbox Go Suck A Dick" for all I care. Actually, they should call it that.

Xbox 8 sounds crap lol seriously. I do like the sound of Infinite though! Can't they just simply call it Xbox 3rd Generation? :D

And if I'm not mistaken, the first Xbox was introduced in around 2000-01.. and then just after 5-6 years later they released the Xbox 360. wow I hope they won't release a next gen console anytime soon though.. at least for the next 2 years lol. I mean they just released Kinect inside the last two years too.. it just still feels a little too early!

Drewdude1023
07-04-2012, 11:49 PM
I think Infinity is a much better name than 8. Not only is it not the 8th Xbox, but if's named that because of Windows 8, then what will happen when they release Windows 9? It'll probably only come out like 2-3 years after this console gets released.

xbox 8 sounds lame...that they best they can do?..in the end, I dont care as i am more concerned about the console it self....guess most folks will still refer to as 'xbox' (regards of name)

Nicely put. Too bad that it will receive a lot of backlash because Sony used PlayStation 3.

I am sure they are just buying up domain names just incase.
I would say they are buying them because they want people to circulate rumours. It makes them feel relevant as the Xbox 360 is on its last legs of the current generation.

Perhaps it's just my sense of taste... but Xbox 8/Xbox Infinity doesn't exactly sound suitable to me. Especially if they go with the Xbox Infinity name.. what happens if/when the next generation Xbox comes out after it? Where do you go from there? Xbox Infinity: And Beyond!?

If Xbox 8 is the route they are really taking because of Window's 8 like the OP mentioned I'm going to be very disappointed. So far everything I've been reading about this new console, all of the rumors and what not, have been turning me off to it.

Don't get me wrong. It's great that we're able to do more things on our consoles. That everything is becoming integrated.. but really, it's all just to much for me. Seems like Microsoft is taking their eye off of the ball to me.. but that's just me.

I'll leave you all with a quote though!

"What's in a name? That which we call a rose
By any other name would smell as sweet."

So truthfully does it really matter what's it called? No..

It's a resounding "meh." It's better than 720, but only because people can't argue over who thought of that name first.

Edit: In case anyone didn't know, "Xbox 8" might be a way to tie in with the new Windows which is named "Windows 8." That's what the "8" might refer to (though I'm hoping it might also have 8GB of RAM -- lol).
That's what I assumed. And screw Windows tie-ins. I want my Xbox to be a console, not a desktop...

agreed, even with how long we've had the 360 i still refer to it as my xbox. someone pointed out in a earlier thread, we dont even have the giant X on it anymore lol. and they used to be black :( (i guess you can buy a black one).

Maybe they're going to turn the 8 on it's side, to make it into the "infinity" sign and call it Xbox Infinity! I like that!

lol yes, what an awesome idea. xbox8 i kinda dont like, but infinity would pretty awesome. im just wondering how big a difference will it bring, graphics + gameplay wise. maybe it will finally be called the dashboard again, and i can find games on it instead of ads.

Xbox Eight sounds fine, but considering its not the 8th makes me not like it. Tho i guess it could make sense being the 8th gen if thats the case.

This Xbox8 might have nothing to do with a new console at all tho, right?

Infinity sounds cool too i guess, but what about when the the next one comes out, wouldnt seem so infinite then :d.

I agree with the tie in to windows 8, but i feel like xbox 8 isn't a good enough name for them, so they'll choose a different one. Xbox 8 just feels too proper.

Veedrock
07-08-2012, 10:34 PM
It may have already been said but this wouldn't be a good move because the console will no doubt outlast Windows 8, and when that happens then what? I guess the name would already be established by that point, but it would also make the system feel outdated when we move on to Windows 9.

Windows was still in XP when the 360 came out, and since then we've gotten two more iterations in Vista and 7. If they're going to call it Xbox 8 then they must have a ton of confidence in the longevity of Windows 8.
