Latest news on Forge mode in H4. Article pasted below; link here (http://www.theverge.com/gaming/2012/7/7/3143361/halo-4-forge-mode-in-development-at-certain-affinity).

Personally, the only thing I've been wishing for in Forge mode is a desktop app that will let you design maps and then import it into the game. It would be so much easier to create maps with a mouse and keyboard. I have had brilliant (imo) ideas for maps, but I have never finished one cuz it's so tedious and cumbersome with a controller.

'Halo 4' Forge mode in development at Certain Affinity

By Griffin McElroy on July 7, 2012 02:45 pm

Halo 4's mapmaking Forge tools are being created by Austin-based Crimson Alliance developer Certain Affinity, representatives from the studio announced at the Rooster Teeth Expo today.

The updated Forge mode was shown off on stage during the Halo 4 panel at the event, showing off an unfinished user interface, but a ton of new user-friendly functionality. Players can now lock placed objects on the map, ensuring that meticulously-set elements can't be bumped out of place. Moving your cursor over objects highlights them green and displays their name, making it easier to manipulate singular objects in a much larger pile.

Players can easily duplicate items on the map, making it easier to build structures like bridges and roads. Objects can also be magnetized, making them connect to other objects in pre-set ways — making the aforementioned bridge-building process a breeze.

The Forge mode has an entirely new lighting system as well, allowing objects placed in the map to both cast shadows and have shadows cast onto them. Builders can also set "Player Trait Zones" which alter any player parameter (run speed, jump height, damage reduction, and so on) as they enter a field placed on the map. Certain Affinity also revealed a new object: The "Grav Volume," a field which augments or reverses entirely the orientation of gravity for anyone who steps into it.

Certain Affinity is well-versed in Halo development, having created several map pack expansions for the franchise. We've contacted 343 Industries to try and get some screens or footage of the new Forge tools.

This all sounds great! Hopefully I'll be able to crawl back into forge mode. Creating tracks and maps in forge world was repetative.

That cat reminds me of the circular burger bed. (http://www.geekologie.com/2009/01/14/burger-bed-1.jpg)

As for 3.0:
Locking? Magnetizing? Dynamic lighting?
Amazing, just what I've been asking for since I first saw Forge 1.0. Making maps isn't going to be as arduous anymore. "Now the only limit is my imagination (http://favim.com/orig/201108/12/draw-imagination-lsd-rainbow-spongebob-Favim.com-121857.jpg)"

User-defined areas?
Meh. This is probably going to make the good maps great and the bad maps worse.

Different styles rather than blue and brushed steel?
Nope.avi

Hopefully in Halo 5 we'll be able to create our own skyboxes.

I'm pretty sure they confirmed that Firefight isn't coming back in Halo 4.

lol uhhh, that was one of the weirdest / most funny posts ive ever read. and as a cat lover, the cheesburger costume gave me a good laugh.

the forge mode changes sound awesome, i remember one huge aspect i always disliked about making maps was how hard it was for me to make things "smooth." for example when connecting different bridges or something, there was always a bump. and using RB / LB to higher and lower the object took foreeever.

The only thing that could make it better is to give us the ability to make our maps on pc, let us move everything on a map, and no build limit.

I spent at least 2 hours watching forge videos over the weekend, its looking amazing. Theres rumored to be 3 different sandboxes to work on, the ravine one is so beautiful. They've speeded up creating maps with copy and magnets. 343i have also created wild traits, like low damage/or low gravity zones (which helps you jump and fall far more than before) can't imagine what the more creative forgers are gonna do with these.

I caught the Roosterteeth Halo 4 horse video. it ends with a wild new trait, that you can't enter a vehicle unless its in movement. This meant Jack & Geoff had to push a banshee off a cliff and enter it while it dropped woohoo. If you don't see it just watch the final challenge :D
