View Full Version : What Difficulty do you Play your Games on?

I was wondering what difficulty do you all play your games on when you boot them up for the first time?

For me, it's a mix of depending on the game and the achievements, but it leans mainly towards depending on the achievements.

If there's achievements for the hardest difficulty, I'll go for them first, for the challenge, then get the remaining achievements once I'm done. :)

for myself, it would honestly have to depend on a per game basis.

but for the most part, i'll start on the medium difficulty, play thru the game, then play thru it again on hard (usually to finish off the remaining achievements)

I tend to start low and then build my difficulty as i continue until maxed.
More challenge makes me satisfied.

Before I bought Xbox 360, I used to play on Easy/Normal, but now I just have to pick the option: "Depends on the Achievements"

i do normal first to get a feel for the game and not bother about achieves and then go through on hard diff for the achievments

Im always going the hardest difficulty it just give me a challenge and i always find that if i start at a smaller difficulty then i usally suck at the game period. So this way it makes me seam like i get better faster as you usally have to use better tacics then playing on easy or normal

Now I seem to play on the highest difficult available if achievements are involved. Otherwise, I start out low to get good at the game.

I'm not that good at games so always played on normal, but achievements have made me need to step up and play at a different level (no pun intended). I guess it might have something to do with starting out gaming when I was like 12 and trying to get through Doom 1 on PC and getting scared and owned all the time. But once achievements came out, I started tackling veteran on CoD 3 and 2, yeah I went backwards.

if it's a series I know like Halo 3 I played that on Heroic for the first time.
I voted Depends on the Game.

In Crackdown after I beat it once I did on Psychotic.

But with Halo I went straight to legendary since me and my 2 friends did the entire campaign together (in one sitting :p)

for me, it depends on the achievements, which 9 times out of 10 means hardest difficulty. i had a funny moment though, because my friend was talking about CoD4 Mile High Club on Veteran and i go, "do you do the gamerscore thing too?" and he said "what?" and i said, "you know, achievements!". i got a blank stare and a shake of the head. oh well.

i just go through the hardest difficulty unless it is a weird game or it is impossibly hard then i will go back and change but other than that Hardest for the win

Easy to relax, then later hard for a challenge. Gives more replay value.

I am usually on the easy mode for the first time round and the hardest for the second try. No point trying the middle difficulty(ies) since you will get the achievements as well. :)

Siege Is Like

normally hard, because things like cod4, GoW and other shooters on casual is way too easy - you can just stomp through people with a shotgun or melee attacks. on insane/veteran though you need strategy and well placed shots.

I am quite good at games so I almost always start at the hardest difficulty level

I usually start on the easiest difficulty because I want to get a feel of it. After I've completed one playthrough, I'll move to the hardest difficulty. Except I'll only play on the hardest difficulty if there are Achievements. I don't usually do the difficulties in between.

For me I always put the difficulty depending on the game. If achievements are involved I dont change it its all on the game. If an achivements tells me to beat it on hard I will not start on hard I have to get a fell of the game first. There are some games I start at highest difficulty but thats rare for me. Not even for an achivement ill do, but im not a Achiv Whore so that wont apply to me.

For me it really depends on the game. Halo 3 - Legendary first time, because I love Halo and am good at it. Bioshock - new game to me, so I played first time on medium. I never really do games on easy, it is not a challenge and not fun.

like a lot of people who posted on this thread, it depends on the game. For Halo 3, i did it on heroic the first time, but for games that i am new on i usually would go for the normal difficulty, but never the easy difficulty because it sucks all the fun out of the game.

I play medium the first time, then I try the hardest difficlty.

But it could depend of the game.

depends on the game because BioShock on hard is really easy but CoD4 on veteran is straight-up hardcore

I generally, start on the easiest - then once I'm done with that. I just got straight to the hardest one.

I usually play on the easy setting first time though a game, because it allows me to enjoy the game without restarting etc. Then i will play on the hardest setting second time through. but it depends on the achievements, whether they are stacked or not. But i played Halo 3 on Heroic first time, because i used to play Halo 2 24/7, so i was used to it.

i usually play hardest difficulty first then will go back to and eaiser one but achievements do play a role in that. but i still play the hardest just for the challange. but what pisses me off is the difficulty achievements that dont unlock when u play at hardest difficulty meaning having a easy medium hard achievement to go through the game why not give u all if u beat it on hard why make u go through it on all levels its pointless but we still do it. sucks...

It depends on the achievements for me. Like CoD4 I played through on the easiest setting and got all the achievements I could, then went and played through on veteran to get those achievements.

i mix it up, i generally start the game on the default setting, but i will change it if i feel i can achieve the extra points on offer, but if its a game im playing for points only i will dumb it down to get through the game faster as long as it dosent affect my score

Depends on the game. I am not gonna play crap on hard. But a game I love like FEAR, rainbow 6 or COD I will always play on the hardest setting.

12-21-2007, 03:14 PM
I usually start off on normal mode. If it is too easy then I will move up. Obviously if there are achievements to be dealt with, I will deal with those accordingly.

Depends on the game. Most of the time if I have to collect stuff or build up my levels I will play on easy just to get that stuff out of the way and then I can concentrate. I usually play through games twice unless it is a piece of crap (lol..)

Xterm1n8or
12-21-2007, 04:02 PM
As said many times it totally depends on the game. If i am purposely renting a game for an easy 1000, i will do it on the easiest difficulty that i can do it on which will get me all the achievements.

If it's one of my personal favourite games i will play every difficulty many times, regardless of whether or not i will get achievements for doing so.

I play mine depending on the ammount of achievements you get for each. (i.e. most of the achievements on COD 4 are on Veteran, so I'm playing it on Veteran first play through)

Distilled84

I like to start out on Medium and then work up through the remaining difficulty level(s) for the extra challenge and to pick up any remaining achievements.

If there are achievements for harder difficulties, I do that. If not, I play on the easiest and quickest to get my 1000 unless it's a game I love like Bioshock where I played it twice through even though I could have done everything in one go.

Before achievements I always played on easy, medium at most. The best thing achievements have done for me is encourage me to play at a higher level. I'm a much better gamer now than I was in college.

QFT, doing that with CoD4 right now.

XboxFreak36
12-24-2007, 05:30 PM
For me It depends what for achievements there are. CoD4 was way too easy, and here were only achievement for single so i played it right out on Veteran. Some games like Bioshock have lots of different achievements, so i started it on Medium ;)

I will always put FPS's on the Hardest setting, as i wont find any of the easier settings a challenge. As for other genres of games, it will depend on the game and achievements.

If the game has an achievement I can get from going through hard, I will go through it on hard. If I have to beat the game once before I can get an achievement, I will do it on the easiest.

You mean the game isn't supposed to be played on any other difficulty... Than why do they have achievements for it? Or even the option to play on anything but Hard?

Pretty much always choose the hardest difficulty and get quite annoyed with games that you have to unlock the hardest difficulty by doing an easier one first like gears of war and mass effect

He just means that most games are boring if not played on realistic - Halo 3 for example. Its no fun to NOT die.

Just saying games aren't made to be played on hardest mode. They are just meant to be played and enjoyed, no matter what mode you play it on. I know a lot of people who wouldn't even pick up some games if you had to play them on their hardest setting only (like CoD2)

I usually start out on the hardest setting (if there is an achievement for it off course) so I don't have to do that anymore so if the game requires another playtrough at least I can do it on easy and don't have to play my game a second time on a hard difficulty setting. I really don't like going trough most campaign's more then once and if I still have to do it on hard after going trough it once on easy, I'll really don't like going trough it again on hard...

i agree, i think thats just what he meant. I always play a game on a low difficulty before going to the hardest.

I was really annoyed with Hitman because the difficulty achievements don't stack, so you had to play through it 4 times.

Depends on the game for a couple reasons. First, if it's a game I don't want to play anyway I play on the easiest setting it will let me so it will go faster. Also, if the game has really sucky/cheap AI (I'm looking at you, worthless allied generals of Samurai Warriors 2) I'll dumb the game down to compensate for the crap factor.

I mostly start a game on medium. I don't want it to be too easy but I don't want to end up getting frustrated with a game by playing it on the harder difficulties the first time. Sometimes it does depend on the achievements.
