View Full Version : Driving Games.. How Do you!

Okay.. So i went for this achievement on Forza 2..

http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/achievements/235/0Tc8P2Ni.jpgNatural5 http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/site/gp-g.jpgAwarded to the single driver who wins the race with all Assists turned off.

Now that requires you to use the manual gear change, just wondering with all you racing lovers out there, How many off you actually use manual transmission in driving games regularily.. Opposed to just sticking with the trusty Automatic...

I myself use Automatic for Forza 2, as i find it quite difficult to concentrate on the track and which gears i should be in.. Also find taking corners hard on manual gear changes, you'll find a spin out quite alot :p

I cant use manual when i play because it distracts me from the game. automatic all the way.

02-03-2008, 06:44 PM
I always use automatic!

02-03-2008, 07:55 PM
I always use automatic!

Same here.

Auto All Day!

Manual. No point in getting a car game if you don't use the transmission.

Takes more skill to use a stick anyway. Plus you're faster.

Damn your a beast. Unless I was using a steering wheel to play the game, I have to use automatic.

Im just flat out lazy so I always use Automatic. But with the racing wheel I like it manual but I dont own one so yea auto it is.

Depends if they are any achievements that are related to manual, otherwise I just do automatic.

Always automatic, too hard for me using Manual gears in a driving game. If I wanted it to be that realistic, I'd go out and drive my car in real!

02-03-2008, 09:27 PM
I do manual for serious games like Forza 2 and NFS:Pro Street, but for PGR I use auto.

02-03-2008, 11:43 PM
I use auto but that's mostly because I suck at racing games

02-03-2008, 11:58 PM
I have always sucked at racing games, automatic for me

02-04-2008, 12:07 AM
Manual every day!

It's the only way you can become one of the fastest in the world at games like Forza 2 and PGR 3. If i hadn't used manual in Forza 2 there would have been no chance of me getting in the top 20 in the world, which i did with manual.

Manual ftw!

02-04-2008, 12:22 AM
If I can get a wheel that resembles a real car(wheel, clutch, breaks, acceleration and shift nobs) then I would do manual. Otherwise, I do automatic. I drive Manual in real life so if I would rape in simulators :).

02-04-2008, 03:48 AM
Depends on the game/car.

02-04-2008, 07:20 AM
On the racing games that I"m not terrible at, I use manual. it always seems to be more effective, at least i think so

02-04-2008, 07:55 AM
I only played manual in sega rally 1 (4 shift manual)
All other games i play automatic.

02-04-2008, 04:17 PM
it really depends on the game for me

if its an arcade game i always got manual

but most console games i stick with automatic

02-04-2008, 04:59 PM
I always use automatick unless I have an actual steering wheel, in which case I tend to use the manial

02-04-2008, 08:03 PM
I usually use Manual, the cars accelerate faster and have more speed. I am starting to get good with them in NFS Prostreet in the Drag events and wheelie competitions.

02-04-2008, 10:53 PM
Auto for me, lets me concentrate on the race more then the gears.

automatic all the way... if you do do manual, you have to be skilled

02-05-2008, 12:43 AM
Automatic unless there is an achievement that tells me to do manual.

02-05-2008, 01:01 AM
I always use automatic because it lets focus on the race more than the gears.

02-05-2008, 02:28 AM
Manuel, more control. Automatic is against my religious beliefs. And it's also as easy as breathing.

02-05-2008, 06:40 AM
I do manual for serious games like Forza 2 and NFS:Pro Street, but for PGR I use auto.

I personally wouldnt call Pro street a serious racing game, but thats my opionion.

Also once you use Manual and get used to it youll never go back!

For starters your car accelerates faster, you can overtake better (push RPM's into the Red and get that extra bit of speed) Approach corners faster and break later by using the gears to help you slow down (engine breaking) cruise thru corners faster and smoother by holding a steady speed in a selected gear and without the auto transmission screwing things up by trying to shift while u creep towards the red line. also if your really serious and know your car can get the most out of your cars power curve (some cars power curves start to dip past its peak power)

I seriously recommend anyone who plays forza 2 seriously to just sit down for half an hour (probably less) on a track you know well (preferably somthing with simple corners like Mugello) and just drive in Manual youll be suprised how fast you will pick it up and will be even more suprised when you start shaving the seconds of your best lap times.

when approaching a corner break and as you break drop down the gears untill you get to the desired gear normally 3rd or 2nd (3rd for mild bends like Mugellos first) (2nd for the tight ones like the final turn in Laguna seca) and if you still feel your going to fast and your not going to make it (on some of the really tight ones in test track use 1st) shift down again. then gently accelerate thru the corner and as soon as your cars about to hit the straight accelerate hard and start shifting back up the gears. (i could talk about apex's and different types of corner but theres plenty of info about that around) there will be exceptions to the rule (like first corner of suzuka is 4th) and can very from car to car like some of the old muscle cars only have like 4 gears, so i usually treat 1st like 2nd and 2nd like 3rd (you get my drift) go on give it a whirl!

Stick FTW!

Ever since the Cruisin' USA days to now.

Shit my first REAL car was Stick and so were all my other cars.

Manual is for experts.

Automatic is for casual players - like me! ;)

I just use Automatic because if I want to play in Manual setting I want a damn steering wheel with a good transmission gear, I don't like a plastic piece that goes up and down only.
At least I use a semi-automatic transmission.

Anyway, I always drive on manual with my car

02-05-2008, 04:21 PM
Manual. No point in getting a car game if you don't use the transmission.

This man's got it completely right, to all those that say they're a demon at NFS or whatever it is you brag about to your friends...try it in manual before you claim your supremacy on a track.

Automatic. Unless I need to use manual for an achievement.

Automatic. I find t very hard to kick some AI ass whilst using manual. I've always done this, and always will.

automatic all the way

This is exactly where I stand on it.

Automatic in games but manual in real life!!

02-05-2008, 06:29 PM
automatic, and by the way the Hardcore achievements on Forza 2 motosport is quite hard, unless you have a prototype, facing off against C classes like i did, too much to concentrate on.

02-05-2008, 08:03 PM
I use manual for online as it makes you go that little bit faster if you can do it properly.

02-05-2008, 09:13 PM
I always use manual, but I drive a stick in real life, so it's not anything that requires extra attention. It's just natural, though I wait much longer to shift in games.

And don't anyone go making fun of PGR. I'll break their knee caps. Seriously.

02-06-2008, 01:17 AM
When I play a racing game I like to sit back and relax. I've never taken the time to adjust to manual and don't see why when automatic has worked perfectly and no learning curve there.

02-07-2008, 12:22 AM
It varies from game to game for me... mainly because some games just have better and more responsive controls than others.

02-07-2008, 03:53 AM
I usually go with Automatic, but for the occasional race I'll switch over to Manual if there aren't any excessively sharp turns and I need the extra points.

I recommend manual for everything... pgr especially, you can control so much more than just accelerating, braking, and steering... it gets you more involved and its more fun, in games and real life.
