I believe everyone should watch superbad or titanic. It's a great movie, one of my top 10 comedies.

Some more stuff:
-Young Frankenstein (God bless Peter Boyle :( )
-Monty Python & The Holy Grail (it's incredibly overrated, but it's still a must see at least once)

Everyone should see as many films as they possibly can at least once in their lifetimes, good or bad. That's how you build perspective into the world of film.

Scarface should be one as well.

I take it you are talking about the remake with Pacino?

I agree with anyone that says Happy Gilmore, just because it's Adam Sandler's best film IMO.

A few others I'd recommend: Pursuit of Happiness, No Country for Old Men, Mike Bassett's England Manager, Mean Machine (The British version of The Longest Yard, but was out before it ;)), The Spongebob Squarepants Movie and Hot Fuzz.

The Boondock Saints, Everyone should watch that more than once.

For those of you who don't know anything about this movie at all, Here's a Plot Summary:

Irish brothers Connor & Murphy MacManus live and work in Boston. Feeling that God's will to rid Earth from all human Evil was given to them as a mission, they set out to do their divine deed. A public outcry is never heard, and even FBI agent Paul Smecker, who follows their trace of bloodshed, admits that the boys are doing exactly what he secretly always has wished to happen. Risking their lives for their beliefs of Veritas (truth) and Aequitas (justice), the Boondock Saints are hyped by the public, for they are doing good, which only few dare to admit.

That's like saying Auschwitz was Hitler's best concentration camp.

Anywho, it's kind of really important for people to see Citizen Kane in terms of meaning as wall as the artistic mumbo jumbo. Casablanca is also up there. Scenes from a Marriage, too, as it has become really pertinent, apparently, for a lot of people. I also think people should be mandated by law to read The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein as an adult. Because so much of it is lost when you're not old enough to remember things.

And if you don't feel like renting anything, people should see There Will Be Blood in theaters.

Just so you know, I'm not necessarily picking the best movies, though it is often the case. I'm picking movies that are important in your everyday lives. Forrest Gump is worth a gander, too, but you all have probably seen that by now.

Dothis

You see, people say this, and then I can't understand how they could like movies from the 30's and 40's. I just don't get it. I blame the government. During the Clinton years. Funny, they were in charge when the movie came out. Coincidence?

100% Agree. I just watched that for Social Studies, because we're doing human rights stuff, so instead of learning about the holocaust (again), my teacher decided to use Rwanda.

Shake hands with the devil - Same thing, except its a documentary from Romeo Dallaire's point of view.

As in first post, I want to see "Saving private Ryan".

'Saving Private Ryan' is one of the finest films ever made. I had the pleasure of seeing this at the cinema twice. The first time I saw it, me and my friend were dumbstruck by it. We talked about if for the next two days and told everyone that we worked with to go and see it.

I then went with my girlfriend to see it and she cried, but enjoyed it. Fantastic film and so 'realistic' in its depiction of war. (I put the word realistic in inverted comma's due to the fact that some might not agree with me or think that I'm in a position to make that statement cause I have never been to or been involved in a war).

It's just my opinion and I feel that everyone should watch this film at least once.

I would also add to the list:
Pulp Fiction
Night of the Living Dead
Dawn of the Dead
Alien (I dont think anyone has mentioned it yet)
Star Wars (Episode IV: A New Hope)
Donnie Darko
The Shawshank Redemption
Toy Story
Gladiator

Those are all films that I would recommend anyone see at least once.

A few of the movies that have changed my life (for the better);
[...]
Rocky Horror Picture Show

I'm not going to dare ask how it changed your life, let alone for the better. Unless it was to avoid creepy castles in a rainstorm...

I'd back it all the same. It's so bad it's so good. Also, my votes go to:
- Spirited Away (not seen Princess Mononoke, however).
- Shawshank Redemption.
- Wall-E.
- Juno.

They Live

if you haven't seen this film, you must. It's so good and really stands the test of time. Even now the message of the movie holds true.

Another is Re-Animator. Such a great film and shows what a good horror screen writer can do with classic science fiction/horror literature from expert writers like H.P. Lovecraft.

edit: Also have to add Four Brothers. This was an astounding film and very well done with a captivating story that will have you on the edge of your seat. I don't typically watch action films but the way it's written, you get this real sense of desperation and start to care about the characters in the film through the development the writer used.

wow i didnt see office space?
what is wrong with you people?

Because Office Space is highly overrated. It's a good film, yes, but it's not necessarily a film someone NEEDS to see. Really, just show clips of Mort (that's his name, right?) going on about his stapler, and then show the ending and him running away. That, to me, WAS the whole film.

I hate Forrest Gump. Reason, you ask? Over glorification of a retard.

Everybody knows you never go full retard. Check it out. Dustin Hoffman, 'Rain Man,' look retarded, act retarded, not retarded. Counted toothpicks, cheated cards. Autistic, sho'. Not retarded. You know Tom Hanks, 'Forrest Gump.' Slow, yes. Retarded, maybe. Braces on his legs. But he charmed the pants off Nixon and won a ping-pong competition. That ain't retarded. Peter Sellers, "Being There." Infantile, yes. Retarded, no. You went full retard, man. Never go full retard.

I'd have to say What Dreams May Come. Great movie, I highly recommend it^^. I have more, but they've already been said. And perhaps Tropic Thunder too.:D

The Descent and REC are the two scariest films I've ever seen, I think everyone should experience them at least once. In the dark. On your own.

How only a handful have said The Matrix. The first one really redefined movies in general with the effects and what not. Not to mention all the copy cats that emerged after it.

But yea others are

Nightmare before Christmas
The Lion King
Iron Man
Hangover
Gladiator
Saving Private Ryan
The Warriors

Requiem For A Dream is essential viewing, the first movie that popped in my head actually. I'm a horror fan at heart, but RFAD is an amazing movie.

Requiem for a Dream

Just curious- why do people like Rain Man and Requiem for a Dream? They're both horrible movies. Boring as shit.

I've only got one movie to suggest, and that's Pan's Labyrinth.

Although in the UK you are forced to read the book, To Kill A Mockingbird is pretty good to watch. Despite being in black and white, it held my attention all the way through.

The Martix rips off quite a few other movies really.

I'd have to go with Blade Runner as a must see movie, and Dumb and Dumber :D

I think everyone should see Bubba Ho-tep. It's just one of those films that works on more than one different level, and really makes you think about the value of friendship and whether old people can have value in society.

Oh, and it also has an ancient Egyptian soul-stealer that is trying to kill Elvis and a black JFK. What more do you need?
