Easy Hardcore Achievement

Personally, I found playing Hardcore substantially more difficult than Old School (which I find ironic, since the achievement for Old School is of a higher point value). If you don't WANT to go through both Hardcore AND Old School, then here's what you do:

Play through the game on Old School. Upon destroying Victor Branco's plane (and ending the game / triggering the final cinematic), you will be awarded with the Achievement for Old School. Once that pops up, press the guide button and quit to the Dashboard. Boot the game back up and select Continue from the Main Menu. You'll be right at the moment where you have to destroy Victor's plane. Once you're loaded in, Pause the game and drop the difficulty down to Hardcore. Destroy the game and blam, you've unlocked the achievement for beating the game on Hardcore.

Update: And doing this will unlock BOTH the One Hit Kill cheat and the Max Payne Advanced skin.

KuShNsTieN 05-30-2012 03:13 AM

can you do this on chapter select?

Saber0307 05-30-2012 03:22 AM

I don't believe so, but I could be wrong. I immediately dove into Old School for my second playthrough and went through the whole game. The idea just popped into my head during the final sequence of the game.

Neith 05-30-2012 03:43 AM

Nice, will do it like this too... :woop:

Nevander 05-30-2012 08:04 AM

Whoa. If this works I love you. I think I will go through old school now, since that was what I was about to start. I can handle no last stand, what I can't handle is dying in 3 hits all the time. I hope this doesn't get patched.

fresh fish 101 05-30-2012 08:58 AM

what if i played Old School with Soft Lock? could i switch to hardcore AND free aim and still get the achievement.

JeppeBoy 05-30-2012 10:14 AM

If this works you should get the nobel prize.

IN5TANT CLASS1C 05-30-2012 10:34 AM

I wonder if this works the opposite way?

I decided to play Hardcore first. I wonder if I beat it back out and try the final part on Old School if it would work.

Ollie Stacey 05-30-2012 04:27 PM

Just about to try it the other way round. =D

Ollie Stacey 05-30-2012 04:31 PM

I changed it to Old School and it said changing to a lower difficulty will stop you from earning achievements related to that difficulty. It didn't work. =(

ll X ll 05-30-2012 05:02 PM

Old school is actually medium difficulty but without last stand. However, weather your method works or not, i played all playthrough's and not once i felt it being tiresome. Had fun and still enjoying the game since i bought it.

Good for the people who just want the cheevos and be done with it. (If it works)

Mister Buds 05-30-2012 07:09 PM

i'm at the start of chapter 13 on old school mode right now. i have a GR:FS session today, but i'll try to finish my playthrough tonight and try this.

fresh fish 101 05-31-2012 12:17 AM

this helpes so much. thank you for finding this, i was really dreading a hardcore playthrough.

Yes, it does give you that message. However, it locks any achievements related to Old School. It will unlock Hardcore.

Infernal 05-31-2012 01:14 AM

Can someone try mission selecting to the last mission and trying to unlock it?

Nevander 05-31-2012 07:00 AM

IT WORKS! I can confirm it works!

Just beat it on Old School, get the achievement for it, dashboard, go back in, switch to Hardcore (will say you don't get anything), and destroy the plane again and DONE!

Chapter select does NOT work though.

Saved yourself the hassle of that impossible playthrough and possible broken controllers!

Thank you so much for posting this Saber, you're my f'ing hero.

danksch 05-31-2012 07:10 AM

Damm. Im almost thru hardcore....Any way it works the other way as well?

I want to say a huge thanks for posting your Method Saber0307.

It's really useful Info for everyone, this Thread should automatically be made into a Sticky.

Thanks for confirming that it worked for you too Nevander, I just hope that Rockstar don't Patch this exploit with an Update before I finish my Old School Playthrough.

JuSt BLaZe 05-31-2012 10:32 AM

Honestly HARDCORE wasn't that hard but nice for you guys. :p
I'd luv to see some shit like that for NYM HC.

Rep 05-31-2012 10:36 AM

Thanks for posting this, man. I'm on chapter 8 of Old School and will try the method once I finish.

If they do patch it just delete the update and play offline, it'll still unlock then

BubsTheGreat 05-31-2012 03:12 PM

I found hardcore easier than Old School. Maybe it's because it was my third play through but I didn't get stuck at points like Old School.

Infernal 05-31-2012 04:26 PM

Do you think you could play the game on easy, and difficulty switch to hardcore at the last checkpoint to hardcore, and have the hardcore achievement unlock?

JeppeBoy 05-31-2012 08:51 PM

Is Old School on Hard or Medium?

It is on medium. Stay on the open in medium difficulty and then try on hard. Notice how much damage you take out in the open. The only thing that makes Old school seem as if it's on hard difficulty is that if they gave you a headshot it is 99% mostly a one hit kill. Where as in every other difficulty it'll initiate last stand.

Saber0307 05-31-2012 11:57 PM

No problem. Glad I could help! :D

Great find, you've saved one les play through. I just started a hardcore run and am only on chapter 2. So start with old school, get the cheev, dashboard out and then switch to hardcore right???

Yeah. It'll tell you that you won't be able to earn achievements by switching difficulties, but that's a dirty lie.
