The Game and Tips:
Gameplay revolves around you controlling various squad types, capturing bases for the English or French, cutting down their officers/generals, and generally being a badass. This section is here to explain some basic game mechanics and provide some tips.
-Squads and Units
There are 17 types of squads in Bladestorm; these squads are further broken down into units. (Example: A horse squad can have either swords, javelins, lances, or halberds) Note: You cannot mix squads or unit types. Your default unit is always sword and you can't change it. Now each squad type has various strength and weaknesses against other squad types. By pressing :back: whenever you're on the battlefield, you can view what your current squad is strong and weak against; another way is to see if your enemy is glowing. Green means your current squad type is effective against the enemy, red means you're weak. Always pay attention to this, it can literally mean life or death on the battlefield.
-Books and Skills
Books are what allow you to command the various types of squads and acquiring them make up roughly 95% of the achievements in this game. Furthermore, books are broken down into tomes which allow you to upgrade a units action skills and equip them with better weapons. Skills are broken down into two categories: Support Skills, which are passive and affect the entire squad type, and Action Skills, which apply to a specific unit type within a squad. Research should be your #1 priority when it comes to skills since it directly affects the number of skill points you receive when you level up a squad, Leadership next, then everything else. All of this can be managed in the Tavern under the Status tab.
-Command and Conquer
Your life on the battlefield will be spent doing two things: traveling to a base, and then capturing it. It's not as bad as it sounds since you'll be doing a lot of slaughtering along the way. Capturing a base consists of simply killing the base commander. There are two ways to draw out the base commander: reducing the base points down to 0, or having your allies enter the base. Pressing :rtbut: will zoom in the mini-map and allow you to see the base points. To reduce base points, you need to kill the enemy squads that have a shield icon. Note: If there aren't enough base squads to kill, try moving away from the base. This will spawn more base squads. Generally speaking, reducing the base points to 0 is faster since you can't control your allies. Once you capture a base, make sure you check emblem in the center as it will have money and treasure for you to collect.
*Killing the squad leader, the soldier with the icon above his/her head, will cause the rest of the squad to disperse.
*Horses level up the fastest, allow you to get to your destination faster, and can devastate the battlefield. Use them!
*Don't be afraid to buy and use pennons, especially the speed increasing type.
*Standing on an ally emblem will heal you. So if you're low on health, head to an ally base.
*Have I mentioned how awesome horses are? You may even forget that they're other units out there.
*Make the most of each day, plan out your route to capture the most bases. More captured bases means more money and items.
*You gain an experience bonus after every 50 combo kills, so try to lure enemy squads together.
Overall, this game is more about time, and some luck, than difficulty. Make sure you follow the guide for Book of Engineering achievement so don't hit the glitch. The thread can be found here. Oh and....England rules!
