Wanted Levels - How They Work

1 Star Wanted Level:

- Fighting or killing civilians
- Shooting or causing explosions in public
- Pulling up behind a police car and honking antagonistically
- Standing too close to a cop after being warned to move
- Bumping in to a police car with your own vehicle

All of those can cause a 1 star wanted level.

Expect this to happen:

- Police will shoot if threatened with a vehicle or weapon
- Will send a helicopter at night to track you
- Arrest you (losing cash and all of your ammo, before being let out of the nearest station)
- If you die with 1 star wanted level, you'll lose more cash after being let out of the hospital
- Police will try to establish line of sight

Vehicles used:

- Police Cruiser, Maverick Helicopter and Sheriff Cruiser

2 Star Wanted Level:

Your 1 star can be escalated to 2 stars by

- Evading the police in a lengthy pursuit
- Threatening police
- Hitting a civilian or another vehicle with your own
- Trespassing in a certain area (name in supplied image)

Expect the following;

- A lone police officer will call for backup
- Police open fire immediately
- Police drive faster and more aggressively, while continuing to establish line of sight
- Police attempt to block your vehicle with their cruisers
- Shooting at a cop escalates you to a 3 star wanted level

Vehicles used

- Same as 1 star

3 Star Wanted Level:

- Killing a police officer automatically earns you a 3 star wanted level
- Trespassing on the airport does as well

Expect the following;

- Police shoot to kill
- If the helicopter spots you, police will move their search to your location
- Police become more aware of their surroundings, and find better areas to spot you
- Police drive more aggressively and attempt to ram you
- Police set up roadblocks
- The extent of the police response pursuing you is increased
- Two sharpshooters will fire on you from the helicopter

Vehicles used

- Police Transporter, Predator Boat (if you're in the water), plus previous vehicles

4 Star Wanted Level:

- Earned by trespassing in particular areas
- Police are joined by the FIB
- Heavily armed and armoured police officers arrive
- FIB agents will shoot you from their vehicles
- Will chase you anywhere, using tactics and working as a group to find you
- Will use tear gas to flush you out
- Helicopters will send down sharpshooters to join the ground forces

Vehicles used:

- FIB Cruiser, FIB SUV, Sheriff SUV, plus previous vehicles

5 Star Wanted Level:

- Multiple police helicopters will chase you
- Police will try to disable your vehicle with gunfire, and their own vehicles
- Huge amount of police and FIB agents chasing you
- Random roadblocks created by NOOSE agents

Vehicles used;

- Police Riot, plus previous vehicles

As you can see, there have been a few changes made to the Wanted system, most notably the way the police behave and the fact that you get an instant 3 star wanted level for killing a police officer! Civilians will call the police to report you, with the less populated areas allowing you to cause a little more trouble before someone snitches. Will we be able to see if someone is calling the police? Who knows, but wouldn't it be awesome to silence them as they pick up the phone?

I now have a fantastic idea:

- Get behind a police cruiser and honk until they pursue you
- Drive towards an intersection where the road crosses a railway line
- Stop you car just after the line so the police have to stop on the line
- Wait behind your car so you are safe from bullets
- Eventually a train should come and hit the police removing your wanted level
- Drive off and enjoy your new sense of freedom and love of trains

I wish! I'd be balls deep in the guide if I had, not on here! :p

Someone got hold of the guide, and is posting images of it. He's put up the weapons and vehicles as well. :)

So tempting, but I don't want to ruin the surprise of finding out myself.

I was incredibly tempted just by loading them up to make sure they were the correct pages. I saw a few of each, and had to drag my eyes away!

Sgt Slee 09-12-2013 06:45 PM

The vehicles look really good. Hopefully they handle a lot better than GTA IV

Barad 09-12-2013 06:46 PM

God damn..they've really bumped up the stars.. Killing a cop would only get you 2 stars on IV, and you'd have to kill another 5 cops just to reach 3 stars. I'm loving the slightly redefined Wanted system here though!

Even though they seem slightly easier to escape from, they look a lot harder to fight which will make for some tense battles. :D

However, surviving for 3 minutes on a 3 star wanted level with everyone together sounds easier, as you just need to kill one cop, and then play peek-a-boo with the first response.

Was this one of the achievements? I can't remember. :p

Might just go order the strategy guide. Regular edition + strategy guide for 42 seems like a better investment than the SE for 60.

It is one of the achievements. :)

I'd recommend the guide, as I'm a big collector of them and they are always nice to have at a moment's notice.

Rickmassacre 09-12-2013 07:22 PM

Must not look!

CrAzYnEsS 09-12-2013 07:31 PM

I was so hoping the military would make a return and pursue us.

This is great info though. This new wanted system is sure gonna make robbing banks more interesting. Things are gonna escalate real quickly.

I ordered it. :D It will be excellent to read on toilet breaks. :p
I wonder what the difference is between the regular and special editions of the guide, other than price and hardback/paperback. It says on Amazon that they both have the same amount of pages.

1-click buying is dodgy on Amazon, they'll put on paid postage for you and then want your password to change it, despite not wanting it to actually put the order in. Cheeky bastards. Also: No VAT... Yay!!!

Same here. I knew it probably wouldn't happen though. Now you can only get 5 stars instead of 6, but without the military chasing after you there's not really much of a point of having a sixth star. I didn't even notice a difference in GTA IV. I think the only difference was a second Annihilator chased after you.

I thought that the difference may have been that 6 was inescapable.

Now that you mention that, that achievement IS insanely easy.

Even if it was 5 stars we had to survive on, I'm sure there would be some place in the city to hide in just like under the bridge on IV.

You could do both, but the bridge method was the first to be found. On the day of release, actually. :)

I remember the stupidest things, but forget important stuff...

InsaneKane87 09-13-2013 03:29 AM

You know... when you hear about a new feature or a feature updated it sounds really good, then you hear about all the little details in that one feature itself. It's really crazy if you think about how much detail so many things have.

Damn! Didn't see anything about spike strips, that would have been epic for them trying to disable your vehicle like in Vice City. Flatten your tires and you keep riding on your rims, maybe a rim pops off causing massive sparks. I hope we can over hear the police radio like in previous GTA games.

dakisbac 09-13-2013 03:50 AM

Sounds like an improvement. Wish they still had 6 stars and the army come after you though. You know shit is serious when they're sending tanks out after you.

As someone that has escaped a 6 star wanted level I can assure you it is possible.

Hudson888 09-13-2013 06:46 AM

Nice info! Sounds like more of a challenge now, should be fun.

Why is it only Friday.... This may be the first time I have wishing my weekend to fly by.
