Welcome to Cabela's Survival: Shadows of the Katmai. If you bought this game new, it probably came with a light gun, which is fortunately not required for this game. The game has a much more developed story mode than other Cabela's games, but it is just as short. You can probably knock the campaign out in under four hours, but the Shooting Galleries will take just as long and are much more difficult. So, let's jump right in.
Step 1: Story mode
Start out on Hard since all the difficulties stack. Hard is a bit of a misnomer here, since there are only one or two locations that will give you any real trouble on hard. The only thing you need to pay attention to is the map piece collectables and the weapon specific kill achievements. Everything else is easily mopped up or practically story based.
Step 2: Story mop up
There are a few things that you might have missed in your playthrough of the story. Since you have already gotten the achievement for passing the game on hard, you can change the difficulty down to easy and select the level you need.
Step 3: Shooting Galleries
This is the only reason why the game got a 6 difficulty and not a 3. You need to do two things here: winning challenges by beating your high score and getting gold medals on all 27 galleries. Some of these galleries will require memorization, but all are managable with practice. There are tips available in the guide below.
The game is pretty easy, aside from a few of the Shooting Galleries, so if you can stick with the more challenging galleries, you should be rewarded with the completion.
Super Sight 30
Hunt 20 animals using Focus Shot in Story Mode
This will almost certainly come naturally over the course of the game. You'll need to build up your focus first, but so long as you get a kill before the guage runs down, you will be be credited towards the achievement. If you are concerned, you can always use focus shot against the birds that swarm you while you are climbing cliffs.
The True Adventurer 30
Finish Story Mode on the Hard difficulty setting
Since the difficulties stack in this game (not a given for Cabela's games), you can play on hard and get credit for beating medium and easy as well. There are not that many difficult sections of the story, but the "monster" near the end of the game may give you a few problems. Focus shot (Left trigger) is your friend, and try to get the collectibles, as they will ensure that you always have sufficient ammo and health.
You Are On Fire! 30
Hunt four attackers in a single Focus Shot sequence in Story Mode
To pull this off, you will need a full bar for your focus shot. The problem is that there are not that many areas of the game were you will be facing off against four or more animals aside from the bird swarms while you are climbing cliffs. Birds are not easy to hit, but they are the easiest place to do this. When you have a full bar, wait for a flock of birds to come at you, pull the left trigger and down four birds. You'll have numerous opportunities to do this through out the game.
Fill The Pocket 30
Gather 15 collectibles in Story Mode
You'll probably get this before the end of level 3 since everything counts as a collectible. Not just the map pieces and journal pages, but ammo and health as well. None of the collectibles are very well hidden, so you will probably get everything (or almost everything) without a guide. The only essential collectibles are the map pieces as they unlock the Shooting Galleries. You can find a guide for those HERE
. You can see if you missed any collectibles in the end of level stats.
Stop Chewing My Leg 30
Hunt six latching animals while in Story Mode or Shooting Galleries
Having an animal latch onto you in story mode is practically unheard of (and pretty dangerous), but it happens in regular locations in the Shooting Galleries, so you might get this naturally while going for the gold medals. Essentially, if some wolves get close enough, they will grab onto your leg, forcing you to shoot the animal before it drains your health. Survival Gallery 3 is the best place to get this achievement if you want to grind, as there will be a wolf that latches on quite early. You will be able to get this in single player, though there is a method HERE
describing how to get it with two controllers.
You Rule! 30
Win 15 Challenges
After you finish one of the Shooting Galleries, you will have the option to create a challenge. You can do that after a good run to challenge yourself, but more than likely, you will just want to grind this out. You best bet is to load up a Survival Gallery and put down the controller for the entire thing. You'll probably die in less than 90 seconds regardless of what gallery and difficulty you use. Now, create a challenge from that run and play the challenge trying to get passed the first few predators to survive a few seconds longer and pass the challnge. Repeat 14 more times to unlock the achievement.
More Than Alpha 30
Hunt three alpha wolves in Story Mode
Story based. Alpha wolves appear frequently in the story in groups of wolves.
