(in order of: heart, diamond, club, spade)

As you may have noticed, Poker Smash contains five different valued cards, each with four different shapes assigned to them, called suits. Matching these twenty types of cards based on values and suits is vital to making hands, especially ones that grant more points.

Card: One of twenty different types of blocks, four different suits per each of the five values.

Value: Ace, king, queen, jack, or ten.

Suit: Heart, diamond, club, or spade.

Hand: A match of three or more cards based on value or suit.

Let’s move onto basic controls:

(There are other buttons that can be used, but these are the main five.)

--The left stick is used for moving the cursor in all eight directions (up, down, left, right, and diagonal).

--The right stick is used for moving the currently selected card, either to the left or to the right.

--The L trigger is used to speed up the blocks’ motion upward.

--The R trigger is used to slow down everything: the upward motion, gravity, hand disappearance.

--The A button is used to place a bomb on the currently selected card, causing it to explode, freeing up a space. All cards directly above this will fall.

NOTE: The L and R triggers can be used simultaneously to both slow down the action of disappearing cards and gravity, and to move the blocks upward quickly; this helps with making larger chains.

Hands (various values and suits used as examples; as long as the specific conditions are met and aren’t suit-specific, card values and suits don’t matter):

--All hands that contain up to 5 cards can be made horizontally, while all hands from 6 to 9 cards must be made vertically. The pictures will be shown horizontally, but know that all hands requiring 6 or more cards must be made vertically.

Techniques:

In Poker Smash, there are a few abilities making it much different from other XBLA games. Ranging from fall speed manipulation to catching blocks in midair, the utilization of these separate the beginners from the pros.

For all of these explanations, I will be using homemade diagrams (beautiful, eh?) to demonstrate each step.

In all of these diagrams, your cursor will be marked with a pink square, while where you switch the card will be marked with an orange square. Hands made will be marked with a dark green rectangle.

And here are the basic techniques to add to your arsenal (which will be named with crazy references, because I can):

Catcher In The Rye

Description: When you stop a falling card by moving another card under it (either in midair or at ground level), causing the falling card to make a match.

Demonstration: The first thing to know about this is that it’s best to do when in slow motion, so that you can time the moves perfectly. Veteran players may find this easier to do at normal speed, but the ability of the R trigger to slow down gravity helps immensely with practicing.

http://img339.imageshack.us/img339/8668/catchuj6.png http://img339.imageshack.us/img339/200/catch1xy7.png http://img339.imageshack.us/img339/2868/catch2nr9.png

1. Make a hand that causes the cards above to fall.

http://img339.imageshack.us/img339/1610/catch3wj1.png http://img339.imageshack.us/img339/1486/catch4dp7.png http://img339.imageshack.us/img339/742/catch5ai3.png

2. While the cards are falling, move the cursor onto the card you plan on using to momentarily stop the fall (a card at least one row below the cards planned on matching, depending on where the falling card is).

http://img339.imageshack.us/img339/204/catch6ni8.png http://img339.imageshack.us/img339/2936/catch7ew9.png http://img339.imageshack.us/img339/4199/catch8bl9.png

3. Now move the card out at the exact time in order to stop the fall. If timed right, you should have made the hand.

Can Ya Stick It?

Description: When you slide a card over a gap in slow motion so that it makes a hand.

Demonstration: Slow motion is absolutely necessary for this, otherwise gravity takes control of the situation and all you did was just make a card fall down a gap.

http://img339.imageshack.us/img339/5295/stickjf0.png

1. Find a situation similar to the one pictured.

http://img339.imageshack.us/img339/9946/stick1rr4.png http://img339.imageshack.us/img339/8098/stick2ec8.png

2. Slide the card over.

3. There’s your match.

Jenga!

Description: Pulling a card out from under a column of cards, causing the cards to fall making a hand.

Demonstration: This is probably the easiest to understand, simply because all you do is make one move in the right place.

http://img339.imageshack.us/img339/6046/jengamp9.png http://img339.imageshack.us/img339/8773/jenga1jv3.png http://img339.imageshack.us/img339/6127/jenga2gz8.png

1. Move a card into a gap that will cause the column to fall.

http://img339.imageshack.us/img339/3681/jenga3tq1.png http://img339.imageshack.us/img339/9427/jenga4fw2.png http://img339.imageshack.us/img339/2715/jenga5vi2.png

2. Say hello to gravity, and there's your match.

3. Marvel over your incredible feat.

Chains:

And the last reserved. Feel free to offer comments and suggestions for the guide. It's in its early stages, thus so far it's extremely basic, meant mainly for beginners and people who have had no intro to simple poker terminology and stuff.

I'll be adding somewhat more advanced things later on. All the hands should easily be finished today, and there will be some advanced techinques in the second post soon after.

Thanks, but I'd rather them see the finished product before deciding. ;)

And if it's not too much to ask, could you remove the quote of the first post from your post? It takes up unnecessary space.

Thanks again. :)

EDIT: And thanks for removing the quote. The rest of the hands will be up soon. I've gotten most of the descriptions and pictures done. They'll be uploaded in a few minutes.

EDIT2: Done. On the off chance I missed a hand, don't hesitate to slap me (after telling me what I missed). ;)

Also, if you think of something that would belong in the first post, let me know.

You're welcome, even though I won't have chain advice up for a little while. Even then, my highest chain was a x5, so I can only help with general techniques. I haven't had enough practice in seeing moves as quickly as some of the PS greats out there. ;)

EDIT: Updated the Six Flush picture, one of the suits was wrong.
