Introduction:

Welcome to my guide for Sesame Street: Once Upon a Monster. This is a solid game if you are looking for something fun to play with younger kids. It takes you on a colorful adventure where you learn lessons from the stories of 6 different monsters. Player 2 can jump in and out of play seamlessly, just make sure you are signed into the account that you want the achievements for.

Step 1 - Playthough all 6 stories (34 pages):

On your first playthrough you can just focus on playing through the game and getting used to the controls. There is no difficulty setting and you will unlock the majority of the achievements without really trying during the course of regular play. This first playthrough will take about 3 - 4 hours.

Step 2 - Playthrough all 6 stories (34 pages) 2 more times:

Once you have completed the game for the first time, start back at the beginning and play through everything again. You need to play through the whole game 3 times total. Be systematic and work through the second and third times in order. You don't want to replay the game a fourth time because you accidentally skipped one page. That is the biggest caution I can give you because the game does display the number of stars you have per page, it does NOT display how many times you have played each page.

While doing the second and third playthroughs, work on any level specific achievement that you missed the first time around and try to get 5 stars on each level. If you did not play with a second player the first time, try and have someone join you for the dance mini-games as you come to them. Playthroughs 2 and 3 will take around 2 - 3 hours (each) if you skip the cut-scenes.

Step 3 - Mop up:

By now you should have every achievement but if not simply replay whichever page you need to until you complete whatever task you are missing.

Conclusion:

I had a good time playing through this with my kids the first time. We played Co-op the first time through and I had each of them take turns with me. Playing through the 6 stories that way, we managed to end up with over 150 of the stars and over 700:gsicon: within the first playthrough. It is simple enough where young kids will enjoy it without frustration. The game is very forgiving but some of the achievements and stars may take a few rounds to obtain. Luckily, each level is only about 5 minutes or so. The 2nd and 3rd playthrough is where it became a chore. Like most Kinect games, having to replay the same basic mini-games gets stale after awhile. Have fun and thanks for reading.

Play through the tutorial!

Story related and cannot be missed. Start the first monster story, "The Greatest Party There Ever Wasn't" and complete the tutorial.

http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/achievements/1823/+z1G+A==.jpgFine Leather Jackets - 15:gsicon:

Dress up a monster in Seamus's Fashion Grotto!

Story related and cannot be missed. When you get to the dress-up portion of Story 1 (Page 3), just listen to the commands and do what they tell you to do. Spin the clothes rack by passing your hand in front of you and then when you find the item you want, push both hands straight ahead to select it. You need an outfit and a headpiece / hat.

http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/achievements/1823/+t2+aw==.jpgFruit Fly - 20:gsicon:

Collect 110 pieces of fruit from the Tree of Plenty!

This is cumulative so just keep replaying the Tree of Plenty level (Story 1, Page 4, where you fly up a tree) until the achievement unlocks. You get about 55 - 60 fruits per flight so you only need to play this 2 maybe 3 times until you meet the quota. You have to play each level 3 times for the full 1000:gsicon: so you will get the total required without any grinding.

http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/achievements/1823/UPpMAHQ=.jpgHappy Birthday! - 10:gsicon:

Help Marco blow out his birthday candles!

Near the end of the first monster story (on Page 6) you will throw a party and a cake will appear on the screen. It will slowly get closer to you so just lean in as if you are pretended to blow out the candles to unlock this achievement.

http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/achievements/1823/UPy242Q=.jpgParty Time - 25:gsicon:

Throw a birthday party for Marco!

Story related and cannot be missed. This is awarded upon completing the 1st monster story.

Story 2: "From Seed to Sky"

http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/achievements/1823/UPkUCJ0=.jpgReal Trashy - 15:gsicon:

Throw trash into Oscar's trash can!

Page 1 of the 2nd monster story has you catching balls of trash and then throwing them into one of Oscar's cans. To catch the balls hold out both hands in front of you to grab one of the balls while they are tossed through the air. Then, once you have it, give it a small toss while aiming for a trash can. Once you make your first basket the achievement unlocks.

http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/achievements/1823/-gZUzg==.jpgWeed Whacker - 20:gsicon:

Pull up 50 weeds in Shelby's garden!

This is cumulative so just keep replaying Story 2, Page 2, (where you pull weeds and then plant and water seeds) until the achievement unlocks. You get about 30 - 35 weeds per attempt so you only need to play this 2 maybe 3 times until you meet the quota. You have to play each level 3 times for the full 1000:gsicon: so you will get the total required without any grinding.

http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/achievements/1823/UPp-OWg=.jpgSeed Sprouter - 10:gsicon:

Plant a seed and water it to grow a little sprout!

Story related and cannot be missed. During Story 2, Page 2 you will be pulling weeds. Afterward, a small worm will dig holes for seeds. Toss a seed to him and he will plant it. Now hold out your hand as if holding a hose and water the seeds to make them grow to unlock the achievement.

http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/achievements/1823/+qKijA==.jpgFastest Florist - 35:gsicon:

Tune a set of flowers in 17 seconds or less!

During Story 2, Page 5 you have to stretch flowers up and down to make the same pitch that Shelby hummed. Listen for the highs and lows and when the game starts hold out both hands and move them up or down to find the "sweet spot". Once in the zone, the flower will begin to glow. Hold it there for a second or two and it will lock into place. You will now move on to the next flower and need to match the next part of the melody. Get through all 7 flowers before 17 seconds is up to unlock the achievement. This is not as bad as it seems because some of the melodies have 2 or 3 flowers at the same pitch and you only need to complete one bed of flowers in 17 seconds and not the whole mini-game.

http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/achievements/1823/UPmN8VI=.jpgGreen Thumb - 25:gsicon:

Help rebuild Shelby's garden!

Story related and cannot be missed. This is awarded upon completing the 2nd monster story.

Story 3: Seamus the Brave

http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/achievements/1823/+0JaHw==.jpgImperial Style - 20:gsicon:

Send Seamus onstage in three different emperor outfits!

At the beginning of Story 3, Page 1 you select an outfit for each character and Seamus. Choose whatever you like but keep track of what items you picked. Play through the whole story and then on your 2nd and 3rd playthroughs, pick completely different outfits for Seamus. There are 3 components to select; an outfit, a hat and a scarf. Make it easy on yourself and choose the coordinating items. For instance dress like a viking or king and select the corresponding items. That way when you come back to play the 2nd and 3rd time you will easily remember that you already did a viking (or whatever).

If you like you can just replay the event 3 times in a row, selecting a different outfit each time. It may be easier to keep track of what you have worn that way.

http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/achievements/1823/UP3P4jg=.jpgMake Some Noise - 15:gsicon:

Give the dramatic flower chorus something to say!

Story related and cannot be missed. During Story 3 on Page 2 you will have to make the flowers "talk". Just play through the whole thing and do what ever Cookie Monster prompts you to do to unlock the achievement.

http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/achievements/1823/UP-u640=.jpgIt's Really a Super Food - 10:gsicon:

Perform the broccoli pose!

During the play on Page 6 of Story 3, Grover will come out in the Broccoli Suit. Cookie Monster will tell you what pose to strike (a short squat and then just stand straight) and the achievement will unlock right away. You have a couple of chances to get this if you somehow miss it the first time. You can also replay the level if needed.

http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/achievements/1823/UPheMN0=.jpgStanding Ovation - 35:gsicon:

Perform every pose in Seamus's play!

During the Story 3 play, pay attention to the on-screen cues and directions from Cookie Monster and you will unlock this without much effort. All the poses in the game are fairly easy and you have plenty of time to get in position.

http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/achievements/1823/+kRHpA==.jpgActing Coach - 25:gsicon:

Help Seamus put on his play!

Story related and cannot be missed. This is awarded upon completing the 3rd monster story.

Story 4: To Have and to Hug

http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/achievements/1823/UPus+Oc=.jpgGrrhoof Groomer - 10:gsicon:

Pull a stick off of Grrhoof!

Story related and cannot be missed. During Story 4, on Page 3 you are directed need to take sticks and leaves off the big monster. Just follow the instructions given in the game for this easy achievement.

http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/achievements/1823/UPs1ASg=.jpgPuffalope Petter - 15:gsicon:

Make friends with a Puffalope!

During Story 4, Page 4, you will play a game where you toss biscuits at Puffalopes. After you get 3 good tosses the Puffalope will run up to the front of the screen. Reach out your hands to pet him and unlock your achievement.

http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/achievements/1823/UP49KgI=.jpgStuffalope - 20:gsicon:

Feed 50 biscuits to the Puffalopes!

This is cumulative so just keep replaying the feeding level (Story 4, Page 4, where you toss treats to the Puffalopes) until the achievement unlocks. You get about 25 biscuits per round so you only need to play this 2 maybe 3 times until you meet the quota. You have to play each level 3 times for the full 1000:gsicon: so you will get the total required without any grinding.

http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/achievements/1823/UPufwfs=.jpgGrrhoof Be Nimble - 35:gsicon:

Keep your balance, and don't fall in the mud!

Page 5 of monster story 5, "To Have and to Hug" is a race through the woods. Within this level, there are 3 sections that contain a log that you need to maintain your balance on. If Grrhoof is leaning right you lean left (and if he leans left you lean right) to keep him centered. It unlocks when you complete the course without falling in the mud. You can replay the page as often as you like if you do not get it the first time.

http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/achievements/1823/-39Vkg==.jpgLove Them and Pet Them - 25:gsicon:

Help Grrhoof make friends with the Puffalopes!

Story related and cannot be missed. This is awarded upon completing the 4th monster story.

http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/achievements/1823/-L6ktA==.jpgGotcha! - 10:gsicon:

Catch a Doo-Ray while parachuting!

On Page 2 of Story 5, there is an event where you are falling out of the Tree of Plenty in pursuit of the Doo-Rays. While you drop, lean left, right, forward and backward to avoid tree branches and clouds to gain speed. Once you get close enough, just guide your character into the Doo-Ray for the achievement.

http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/achievements/1823/UPrV+bs=.jpgParachute Power - 35:gsicon:

Reach the bottom of the Tree of Plenty without hitting more than three obstacles!

On Page 2 of Story 5, there is an event where you are falling out of the Tree of Plenty in pursuit of the Doo-Rays. While you drop, lean left, right, forward and backward to avoid tree branches and clouds to gain speed. If you can make it to the bottom without hitting 4 obstacles the achievement is yours. You can replay the level as often as needed.

http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/achievements/1823/UP6X6tE=.jpgMuddy Monsters - 20:gsicon:

Wash off the Doo-Rays 10 times!

This is cumulative so just keep replaying the mud cleaning level (Story 5, Page 3, where you spray water on the Doo-Rays) until the achievement unlocks. You get 5 Doo-Rays per round so you only need to play this 2 times until you meet the quota. You have to play each level 3 times for the full 1000:gsicon: so you will get the total required without any grinding.

http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/achievements/1823/UPhtCcE=.jpgGrand Marshal - 15:gsicon:

March in the parade with Tallulah and the Doo-Rays!

This is story related and cannot be missed. On Page 5 of Story 5, after collecting all your band members in the previous pages, you will start this page lined up with all the musicians. Just march in place for a quick achievement.

http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/achievements/1823/-+asXQ==.jpg76 Trombones - 25:gsicon:

Help reunite Tallulah and the Doo-Rays!

Story related and cannot be missed. This is awarded upon completing the 5th monster story.

Story 6: Like a Monster in the Sky

http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/achievements/1823/+RxPTQ==.jpgRight Said Sled - 35:gsicon:

Go through every wind gust on the sledding run!

When you start the 6th monster story, "Like a Monster in the Sky" on page 1 you will do a downhill sledding event. This achievement can be tricky to do with 2 players unless player 2 just stands still. For best results attempt this solo.

The goal is to get to the bottom of the hill while going through the wind speed power-ups on the ground. ALL of them (they are the air currents running between two small mounds of snow). I counted at least 95 of them. It is ok to hit obstacles but you have to make it through each marker.

Just lean side to side making subtle corrections and always plan for your next wind gate. If you can slide through a couple by just staying on a straight line, simply do not move. To help when the perspective changes, it is important to note that there are invisible "lanes". If you lean left or right slightly, you will change into the adjacent lane and then stay there until you move again. You can reload the chapter as often as you need too.

http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/achievements/1823/-p+tAQ==.jpgGive 'Em the Brushoff - 15:gsicon:

Dust the snow off of all the monsters!

On page 2 of the 6th monster story, "Like a Monster in the Sky", you are prompted to pull, knock and shake the snow off everyone. Just complete the level following the commands that are given and you will unlock this at the end of the page.

http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/achievements/1823/+GVOEQ==.jpgAnd Then There Was A… - 20:gsicon:

Narrate Ramona's story two or more times!

Once you've played through the 6th monster story, "Like a Monster in the Sky", reload page 4 (the one where you actually tell the story into the microphone) and play it one more time.

http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/achievements/1823/UPm+yE4=.jpgStalefish McCookie - 10:gsicon:

Do a trick on the sled!

When you start the 6th monster story, "Like a Monster in the Sky" on page 1 you will do a downhill sledding event. There are 3 scripted jumps which equals 3 oportunities to get this achievement. When you come to a jump just listen to what Elmo or Cookie Monster tell you to do and perform that move. (Ex: Lean forward, put your hands in the air, spin around, etc...)

http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/achievements/1823/UPwcI7c=.jpgStoryteller - 25:gsicon:

Tell stories with Ramona!

Story related and cannot be missed. This is awarded upon completing the 6th monster story.

http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/achievements/1823/UP-d0pE=.jpgThe End - 100:gsicon:

Play through every chapter in the book!

Story related and cannot be missed. Just play through every chapter and every page. There are 34 pages total (including the credits).

Miscellaneous Achievements

http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/achievements/1823/+YW2gg==.jpgAgain! Again! - 30:gsicon:

After playing through the whole book, play through any page again!

Play though the whole book one complete time (including the page for watching the credits) and then replay any page to unlock this achievement.

http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/achievements/1823/UP8IDqU=.jpgMonster Helper - 35:gsicon:

Play through every page in the book three times or more!

There are 6 stories, each containing between 5 and 6 pages for a total of 34 pages. If you skip the cut-scenes, a complete playthrough will take 2 - 3 hours. Once through the whole game the first time, just flip back to the beginning of the book and run through it 2 more times.

I did sit through the credits 3 times too.

http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/achievements/1823/UP0aPgw=.jpgTwo's Company - 35:gsicon:

Play through any page with two players!

Just have someone else stand beside you and play any page to unlock this achievement. Each page will last around 3 minutes so it is not a huge investment of time to play through one page.

http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/achievements/1823/UP4OEx4=.jpgJazz Hands - 35:gsicon:

Play through every dance page in the book with two players!

You and a second player need to play every dance page together you do not even need to perform well. If you play through the whole game with a second player this will unlock for you by the time you finish the 6th monster story.

The stories and pages unlock in regular game progression so if you don't have someone who you are playing the whole game with, then the specific levels you need to play in Co-op are listed below:

  1. The Greatest Party There Ever Wasn't: Page 6
  2. From Seed to Sky: Page 3
  3. Seamus the Brave: Page 5
  4. To Have and to Hug: Page 6
  5. The Sound and the Furry: Page 5
  6. Like a Monster in the Sky: Page 5

See "Milky Way".

http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/achievements/1823/UP7o9jY=.jpgMilky Way - 40:gsicon:

Collect all the stars!

There are 170 stars in the game and you receive an achievement upon reaching milestones of 5, 25, 50, 75 and 170. There are 6 monster stories to play through and each story has between 5 and 6 pages. You can get a maximum of 5 stars per page. As you flip through the pages of the book, you can see how many stars you have on a specific page displayed at the top of the screen.

The number of stars you get depend on how well you perform in that page's mini-game. The majority of the games are easily 5 starred the first time you play them but all pages can be replayed as often as you like so nothing is missable. To get 1000:gsicon: on the game you need to play each page 3 times anyway so it will probably come naturally as you learn what the game expects from your movements.

  • For an objective based challenge (Ex: Throwing trash balls, growing plants, etc): The biggest factor for most of this type of mini-game is time. There is no timer in the game per se but completing an objective faster will generally gain you more stars.
  • For flying events: Collect as much fruit and make as many flowers bloom as you can.
  • For races or falling events: Collect as many items as you can while avoiding the obstacles. If you can get to the end without getting hit (or getting hit a few times) while getting about 80% of the items you'll get 5 stars.
  • For dance events: Keep in time with the music and generally do the moves shown on screen. These type of events are VERY forgiving and anyone who's played Dance Central or that type of game on Easy will have no trouble.
  • For the dress-up events: Just pay attention to what you are told and/or shown and dress the characters accordingly.
  • For the credits: You do need to play through the end game credits game and get 5 stars there too. It is pretty simple, just move your hand around the screen to uncover caricatures of the developers. You have to get all 5 stars while the background color is blue. Once it goes black the game part is over.

If you are playing with a child and can't get 5 stars together, play the page solo and it will be a little easier.

There are reports that getting 5 stars on one of the DLC pages will count toward your main game total. So if there is one event that you just cannot do and if you had the extra 400MSP to spare, you could download the new Story and 5 star one (or more) of those pages instead. Thanks to Rage1776 for the heads-up.

The event that gave me the most trouble was Story 4, Page 3, Cleaning Grrhoof. Just in case someone else has problems here are a few tips: To start, immediately grab the stuff off his chest as fast as you can using 2 hands. Star 1 will pop up. Then lean forward and pull off both horns using 2 hands. We are going to use 2 hands for the rest of the event. Now put out 1 arm and pull off the bracelets and then put out the second arm and take off the other bracelet. Star 2 should pop. Next up are feet, so again we will handle them one at a time. Go ahead and turn around and then quickly grab off the 4 pieces off his back. As a gage, Star 3 should have just popped so you will be at 3 stars after completing this first part. If not, restart the level (unless you want the practice). This first part is not too bad as long as you move fast enough and remember to use 2 hands to tear things off.

The scrubbing is the worst part. For whatever reason my left hand kept disappearing and I would just get a single star during the whole scrubbing process bringing my total to 4. The way I finally got it was by using open palms with my hands facing the TV. Move quickly and start with the belly, then do both arms. Next you will lean forward to do the head and then turn around to wash his back. Star 4 pops here. Now Grrhoof turns back around, do both underarms and then both feet and Star 5 pops at the end.

Here's a video of the process:

Thanks for making such a great guide so quickly after the game's release. However one thing you need to fix in relation to the Jazz Hands co-op dancing achievement: there is indeed a co-op dance required for the achievement in the "From Seed to Sky" chapter. It is page 3. Thanks again and I hope this helps the guide author and anyone else playing this game.

Thanks for the guide, man! Really looking forward to playing this with my daughter, but will wait for the 25 - 30$ price point. Cheers!
Yeah all 3 of my kids like playing it and they range from ages 5 - 10. It's a well made game but older gamers will lose interest if they are playing solo. It could makes the 2nd and 3rd playthrough a chore. Definitely better with parent and child.

Right you are. I just played through that a second time last night too. Completely spaced it when I updated the guide. Let me know if you run into any other problems. Thanks.:)

Stupid question, but how do you skip the cut scenes? I've tried several things but can't seem to do it. Sometimes a red hand appears over the camera in the corner, but I'm not sure what I'm supposed to do to skip it.
Wave your left hand, left to right, when you see the camera icon in the upper right. You can't skip the first time you encounter the cut scene.
