Here's how to do it fairly easy.

 

Think of a cross pattern(the width of 2 gems), extending 2 gems out in every direction.

 

What you need to do is designate each "corner" to a gem type. (for example the top row of the left side is purple triangle, then the left row of the top side would be purple triangles.) You want to have the 2x2 block in the middle(which will be what you rotate) so that the gem type is the same as the corner it would shift to. (Using the top left/left top as purple, that would make the bottom left of the middle gems be purple.)

 

The formatting will look weird for this, but here is a working example: (copy and paste into notepad or whatever to get it to line up better, the = are just for spacing.)

So if you were to rotate the middle blocks, it would line up each in an L shape with the same colors. Now obviously for the x5, you only have to setup 5 of them and not the complete structure, so just need 2 and a half corners.
