Introduction

The Gunstringer: Dead Man Running is a Temple Run clone with an old-Western theme. You control the character in third person, maneuvering him around, under, and over obstacles, all the while collecting coins and shooting targets. There is a Story Mode where you complete levels of a set length following a very forgettable back story, as well as an Endless Run Mode where you strive to get as far as you can in randomly-generated infinite stages. The game fits the freemium model well, but unfortunately, is not free. Many of the achievements are an absolute grind, requiring a significant amount of in-game currency to obtain. In-game currency can be earned in-game slowly or purchased for real money, but the prices are more-or-less outrageous. Currently the game DELISTED from the Windows 8 Store.

Step 1: Grind coins

The first thing you are going to want to do is grind coins so you can unlock Level 1 of the power-ups and some continues. See the "Grinding Method" at the beginning of the guide.

Step 2: Story Mode

Once you have enough coins to unlock all of the power-ups, you can begin playing Story Mode. If the power-ups are not unlocked first, you will not be able to earn the badge for power-ups for any of the levels for the "Master Badge Collector" achievement and you will have to replay every level again. Try to get all of the badges on a given level before moving on. There are only a total of 12 normal + 3 boss levels, which are all quite short.

Step 3: Endless Run Mode

All of the "in one session" Endless Run Mode achievements should be attempted in a single playthrough, as you will need to spend a significant amount of continues (which cost coins) to get these achievements. See "Treasure Hunter" for more information. You may also want to grind coins to level up your power-ups, which can help greatly with these achievements, but is very pricey to do. There are also a few quick and simple online challenge achievements associated with this mode as well.

Step 4: Grind, grind, grind more coins

After completing Steps 1-3, you will still need to grind many many more coins to be able to unlock all of the purchase-related achievements. In total you will probably need to earn over 2 million coins.

Conclusion

The Gunstringer is a major grind to complete if you are not wishing to shell out $20+ in real money to purchase the in-game currency. Do not let the skewed completion statistics on True Achievements trick you. When the game first launched, there was an exploit that allowed you to earn infinite in-game currency very quickly which has since been patched. Currently the best method of grinding will still only allow you to complete it in a minimum of 50 hours of boring, cooperative grinding so it is suggested you avoid this title. If you do not care about completion, a cool 100http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/site/gp-g.png can be earned with little trouble in less than 8 hours.

ALTERNATIVE APPROACH ($$$): All of the grinding in this game can be cut out if you spend real money to purchase in-game currency. If doing this, you should always purchase diamonds, NOT coins. Diamonds are cheaper and have better conversion rates in the Store (mostly because it is very hard and a slow process to earn diamonds without spending money, unlike coins which you can collect easily). I am unsure of how much you actually would have to spend on diamonds, but it would be probably around $20, depending on skill. You would need to buy enough to get a sufficient amount of continues, as well as enough to max out all three power-ups.

GUIDE

GRINDING METHOD: Currently the fastest method for grinding coins is to complete asynchronous Endless Run challenges from a friend. You get a minimum of 500 coins for each challenge you complete. See the Achievement Trading thread HERE if you are looking for someone to exchange challenges with. Depending on how laggy the servers are at any given time, you can complete around 1 or 2 challenges per minute, including load times, meaning you can earn 60,000 to 120,000 coins per hour, not including the inevitable amount of time you would need to spend sending your friend challenges in return. It may be best to do the boosting while both you and your partner are simultaneously online. One player is continuously sending the challenges, while the other is completing them, taking turns every so often. This is the most efficient way to earn coins. If just playing Story or Endless Run Modes naturally, you wont be able to earn anywhere near as many coins (probably only around 50 per minute, which is 3000 per hour).

STORY MODE ACHIEVEMENTS (5 for 50 http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/site/gp-g.png)

The following 5 achievements can only be earned in Story Mode.

Contrary to the description, this achievement will unlock after just completing the tutorial, which can be found under "Tutorial" from the Main Menu. Complete this short level in just a couple of minutes.

NOTE: If the achievement does not unlock, try completing Canyon 1 in Story Mode as well.

http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/achievements/2564/-YS9JQ==.jpg World 3 Champion - 10 http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/site/gp-g.png

Complete World 3 in Story Mode.

You need to complete all the levels of the three Worlds (Canyon, Grasslands, and Alpine Pass) in the game to unlock this achievement, which includes the 4 normal levels and the boss level of each world. Completing a normal level just requires that you get to the end (go through the gate) of the level. Boss levels require that you not only get through the gate, but also defeat the boss at the end. Badges do not factor into these achievements.

TIP TO MAKE BOSS LEVELS EASY: The boss will jump up and down on his cart knocking crates off in front of you that you must avoid. There will also be environmental hazards as well. The best strategy is to stay in the dead center of the path and jump anytime the boss knocks a crate off (even if it is not in your path). Staying in the middle also completely eliminates your need to worry about environmental hazards as they will not affect you in the middle. As long as you time your jumps and stay in the middle, you don't even need to think about where the boss is dropping crates, just jump for every one of them.

http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/achievements/2564/UP-UG-k=.jpg Master Badge Collector - 10 http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/site/gp-g.png

Unlock all Badges in the three worlds of Story.

Every level (including the boss levels) of Story Mode has 5 badges that are earned by:

  1. Completing the level
  2. Collecting 1/3 of the total coins in the level
  3. Shooting all of the chests in the level
  4. Shooting all of the targets in the level (pop-up cut-outs of enemies)
  5. Collecting all the power-ups in the level

The exact amount of coins, chests, targets, and power-ups will vary for each level depending on what paths you choose (there are many forks in the road of each level). There is generally several hundred coins, 2 to 4 chests, 3 to 9 targets, and 2 to 6 power-ups.

All of the badges do NOT need to be earned on the same playthrough of the level. So for example, you could get badges 1,2, and 3 on the first playthrough, and badges 4 and 5 on another playthrough and you are good to go. You can check what badges you still need in the level selection screen. You need to click on the boss levels to see those particular badges you are missing.

NOTE: Power-up badges can not be earned until you spend the coins to unlock all of them from the store (it will say 0 out of 0 in the end screen after completing a run for the power-up badge).

ENDLESS RUN MODE ACHIEVEMENTS (8 for 80 http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/site/gp-g.png)

The following 8 achievements can only be earned in Endless Run Mode.

Collect 2500 Gold Coins in one session.

http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/achievements/2564/+Mj4Vg==.jpg Treasure Hunter - 10 http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/site/gp-g.png

Collect 8 Treasure Chests in one session.

These achievements are all best attempted in a single playthrough of Endless Run mode (Canyon level is recommended) because you will need a significant amount of continues to be able to progress far enough to complete each of these achievement's requirements. The exact amount will depend on your skill (how often you die), but also on luck as the levels are randomly generated (including the items you need for the achievements). The farther the distance you run, the faster your character will move, increasing the difficulty and the need for continues as you progress. I would say having around 60 continues (total cost of 150,000 coins/150 diamonds) is a good amount to attempt this with, but having more is always better. In the Store you can purchase group of continues which will give you the most for your money (5, 10, or 20 continues). Make sure you are quick when you die, as you only have a second or two to hit the "Save Life" button to continue. If you miss it, your run will end and you will have to start over. It is best to practice several times to get a feel for this mode. Once you have enough continues and are ready, attempt your run.

  • Running 25000 meters is probably the easiest one and will come first. Many of the other achievements will require you run over 100,000 meters.
  • Collecting 10 power-ups is also quite easy as long as you have them all unlocked (by purchasing at least the first level of each of them in the Store with coins/diamonds).
  • Collecting 2500 coins is also one of the easier ones.
  • Destructible targets includes both enemies that pop-up as well as stationary barriers, so be sure to shoot everything. Chests may even count as well. Destroying 35 will take a good while.
  • Chests are "collected" by shooting them. Getting 8 could potentially take the longest of any as they do not appear that frequently.
  • Turns are bends in the road. Forks in the road where you choose a direction should also count, but this is unclear. 60 of these will take a while as well.

The problem is none of the achievements unlock until you die and don't use a continue (finish the run). Use your best judgement -- unless you are certain you have met all 6 of the requirements for the achievements, you should keep going until you run out of continues.

The only achievement you can see your active progress towards while in-game is the coins achievement, which shows up in the top left corner. The score that is shown above the coins is related to your distance, but it is not equal and is in fact more than your distance. The other achievements display no real counters at all, so you also need to roughly keep track mentally how many you have. If you finish and do not meet the requirements for any of the achievements, you can check the badges (which have semi-useful counters next to them) at the finishing screen on the right-hand side.

If you fail to get them all on your first attempt, you will need to earn more coins to purchase more continues and try again.

WARNING: The game does seem to freeze a lot on people when they are trying for these achievements in a long endless mode game. Particularly if you get a x10 multiplier on shooting targets. It is suggested that after you get a x9 multiplier, you purposely miss they next target (i.e. do not shoot at it) to prevent the freezing. If your game freezes or crashes to the Start Screen, you will not get any of the achievements (even if you have met the requirements) because they pop after you die in the next screen. You will also lose all of your hard earned continues you used.

http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/achievements/2564/UPp28AA=.jpg The Challenger - 10 http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/site/gp-g.png

Send 25 challenges.

After you complete a round of Endless Run Mode, in the screen after you die, there will be a button at the bottom of the screen that says "Challenge Friends." Hit this button and select the names of friends who you want to send the challenge to and click the check mark to confirm. You can select as many as you want, you just need a cumulative total of 25 challenges sent (they can be to the same friend, to different friends, or any combination thereof). This can be done across multiple rounds. The friends you are sending the challenges to do not even need to have this game or even Windows 8.

Complete 25 challenges.

For this achievement, you will need at least one friend with that game to send you asynchronous challenges. See the Achievement Trading thread HERE to find others with the game. Basically they play an Endless Run level and then challenge you to beat their score. You have one attempt to complete the challenge.

The fastest way to earn this achievement is to boost it with a single partner. Just send each other 25 challenges where you do not doing anything in Endless Mode and walk into the first barrier in the Canyon level. Then to beat the challenge all you have to do is hop over the first barrier and die. Repeat 25 times for this achievement. You can track your progress in the badge area after completing a playthrough of Endless Run under "Win A-sync Challenges - xx/50"

NOTE: The counter and this achievement are a bit glitchy. It also appears to count failed challenges as wins as well, so you may need to complete a few more than 25. If it doesn't unlock, just keep doing a few more challenges. It is also suggested you do all of them on the same Endless Run stage (i.e. Canyon) to avoid any potential glitches.

MISCELLANEOUS ACHIEVEMENTS (7 for 70 http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/site/gp-g.png)

The following 7 achievements are earned by completing miscellaneous tasks/requirements or spending money in the Store.

http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/achievements/2564/-kVMAw==.jpg Social Butterfly - 10 http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/site/gp-g.png

Invite a friend.

Easiest achievement in the game. From the Main Menu, click on the Achievements button. Then, in the lower right-hand corner of the screen, click on "Invite Friend" which will bring up a sharing bar on the right side of the screen. The achievement will pop right away, without even inviting anyone.

http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/achievements/2564/-GRFtg==.jpg Filthy Rich - 10 http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/site/gp-g.png

Have 10,000 coins at anyone time.

You need to get a total of 10,000 coins in your bank balance. See "Grinding Method" at the beginning of the guide for tips on earning coins. This is not cumulative. Your balance must read more than 10,000. Your balance can be found within the Store at the top of the screen.

http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/achievements/2564/UPm3ASY=.jpg My First Purchase - 10 http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/site/gp-g.png

Complete your first purchase.

See "High Roller."

http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/achievements/2564/UPhX+bU=.jpg High Roller - 10 http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/site/gp-g.png

Make your 50th purchase.

These achievements require that you purchase a total of 50 items from the Store. It can be any item, but it is suggested that you purchase continues, which are the cheapest items and you will need anyway to complete the game.

*GLITCH WARNING* It seems only purchases from within the actual Store itself (Main Menu>Store) count towards these achievements. The continues purchased while in-game after you die do not count.

http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/achievements/2564/UP31Ekw=.jpg Packed to the Hilt - 10 http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/site/gp-g.png

Unlock all Powerups.

See "Fully Loaded."

http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/achievements/2564/UPwV6t8=.jpg Fully Loaded - 10 http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/site/gp-g.png

Fully upgrade all Powerups.

Power-ups are purchased and upgrade from within the Store. There are three power-ups total:

  1. Ghost Mode - Makes your character ghost-like and essentially invincible as you can go through any obstacle.
  2. Ghost Sense - Slows down time and your character both, potentially giving you more time to react.
  3. Undead Rush - Speeds up your character and makes him invincible during this time. You move rapidly and it is hard to collect or shoot anything while this power-up is active.

Each power-up can be purchased (brings it to Level 1) and upgraded to Level 5, with each upgrade costing progressively more coins/diamonds. Unlock all the power-ups first, which costs around 7,500 coins total (unlocks "Pack to the Hilt" achievement). Unfortunately, you will need over 1 million coins or more to upgrade all three power-ups to Level 5. See the "Grinding Method" at the beginning of the guide for more information on grinding coins. This is the most "expensive" achievement in the game.

http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/achievements/2564/UPwV6t8=.jpg All Dressed Up - 10 http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/site/gp-g.png

Buy a new costume set.

Costume sets are found in the Store under "Costumes." There are many outfits to purchase, but the cheapest is the Mafia Outfit Set for 17,500 coins (or 15 diamonds). See the "Grinding Method" at the beginning of the guide for tips on grinding coins.

GUIDE UPDATES:

2/1/13 - Guide created and complete.

3/14/13 - Removed glitch information as they have been patched with the update released on March 13, 2013. No longer are certain badges impossible to obtain under some circumstances. Also updated the descriptions for some other achievements as the update changed visual aspects of the menus.

6/3/14 - The game has been delisted as announced by the devs. Updated Roadmap. Servers may or may not still work. These would be required to purchase diamonds. There is at least one online achievement so it may not be completable anymore. Will update when more is know.

Thanks for the Guide!! Is the money glitch still working??

The information you are looking for is tucked in the Roadmap.

So no, unfortunately it doesnt work.

Great guide was going to do one myself after working on the glitchy achievement for 50 purchases but you beat me to it, you may want to add that for the undisputed, only wins on challenges sent to you count for the achievement and not challenges you send or at least that's what I found :-)

Yeah thanks that is definitely the case and is what I was hoping to imply. I will clean the description up soon. Cheers mate.

For grinding without challenges you can run 3-4 over and over for decent cash. While certainly not as efficient as boosting nonstop you can do about 17.5k an hour with no real problems. I just ran it 5 times including restart times with minimal (10 coins) chests on each run and was doing 17,874 per hour. This of course increases if you get 25/50/100 coin chests (there are 3 on the level). Best I have ever done in a single run was 843 coins but I normally average ~725 or so with a low of 665 with all 10 coin chests.

I only fail about 1 in 50 runs since I have run it so many times. It is however, like all grinding, terribly boring. Only real cash I have spent was a $4.99 diamond purchase to do the single run achievements.

Also, as you play every day you keep getting better bonuses

Week 1- 100 coins per day and a diamond on day 7.

Week 2- 200 coins per day+ 1 diamond every day, 2 on day 7

Week 3- 300 per day+ 2 diamonds per day, 3 on day 7

Week 4- see a pattern here?

Not sure how high this goes as I am on week 4. Don't have to do any runs at all just start the game every day and you get the bonus. Just don't miss one or the diamond bonuses (which are the important ones) restart.

I was capturing the run for an achievements guide so I watch the video that I have made and count all the those things. I was doing a sick run: the first time I died, I had 400.000 points.:eek:

I also make a second try but the game crashes another time.

Fortunately the third time I stop with 2502 coins and I fortunately achieve all endless mode achievements without capturing the run.

Actually I think that 50-60 continues are enough for the "endless run" achievements. I was prepared with about 120 lives and I did three times, and I have some lives left.

WTF, I just upgraded my last power up, and no achievement. This is ridiculous. How are Other Ocean's games so broken?

EDIT: They just released an update for the game and after a minute or two, the achievement popped for me. Now I can finally forget about this crash happy game.

Hey thanks for the guide Arsenic! You do a ton of great work for windows and windows phone games. I think I've used at least a dozen of them that you have authored.

Wow the last level of the power ups is a lot of gold/diamonds and one of them you can only buy with diamonds as it stands now. You'll need 5,700 diamonds to buy all 4 powers from that last tier if you don't use any gold.

I spent a total of $45 of real money for this game. I could have bought diamonds more efficiently by buying them in big lots instead of 2 lots of $20 and then a lot of gold for $5, but I didn't need I would need so freakin' many!

I'm wondering if the price of stuff in the store ever changes?

I doubt the price every changes for the premium items, but cant say for sure. Also, can you use coins to purchase diamonds? Because I didnt spend any money for the completion. I thought you could get all the power ups maxed with just coins (there was a coin glitch back in the day which gave millions of coins per hour). But yeah glad you found the guide helpful. And thanks for adding some info on the diamonds. If I can get a total count some day that would be good. At least not I will assume at least 5,700 dimaonds.
