Cool Achievement Guide

Mega Man 9 Achievement Guide

This guide was made by Dstrukt for X360A. Do not steal.

A special thanks to Crysa0r from GameFAQs for a few additional details

Jitterbug
20
Clear the game in 60 minutes or less.

After you've beaten the game once or twice, this is not a particularly difficult achievement to obtain. Make ample use of your special weapons to finish stages quicker, particularly Black Hole Bomb and Jewel Satellite. The former will kill enemies that are otherwise unkillable (i.e. underwater mines, ground sliders) and the latter will make quick work of weaker enemies while you focus on platforming.

If you feel you've taken too long on a stage, reload your previous save and try again. Keep in mind you will need to play through Wily's castle in one sitting though. If you are around the 30 minute mark after beating all 8 stages, you're in good shape with plenty of leeway.

Almost Invincible
20
Clear the game without continuing.

See 'Invincible.'

Invincible
30
Clear the game without dying.

This achievement isn't as hard as it looks. Simply play through a stage without dying and save. If you die on the next stage, reload your previous save and try again.

The only real challenge comes from beating Wily's castle due to not being able to save between levels. Stock up on as many E-tanks, shock guards, and Beat calls as you can afford before you make the trek. Save your 1/2 damage power-up until Wily Stage 4.

No Coffee Break
10
Clear the game without using any Energy or Mystery Tanks.

Also not as hard as it sounds. Stock up on plenty of lives as well as an Eddie power-up. Eddie helps because he will most likely drop an energy pellet/ball or two when you're in a pinch; think makeshift E-tank. If you're low on life during a boss fight with no way out, just die and you will respawn outside the boss door. If you lose all your lives, you can just continue and replay the stage until you beat it.

For the Robot Master weakness list, refer to this thread: here

Also these seem to be the most effective weapons against the bosses in Wily Castle:

Stage 1 Boss -> Plug Ball or Mega Buster
Stage 2 Boss -> Tail: Laser Trident or Mega Buster, Belly: Laser Trident or Tornado Blow, Head: Laser Trident or Black Hole Bomb
Stage 3 Boss -> Black Hole Bomb
Wily Machine -> First form: Mega Buster, Second form: Concrete Shot or Mega Buster, Final Form: Plug Ball or Hornet Chaser

Peacekeeper
20
Clear the game by defeating the fewest number of enemies possible.

The only enemies you can kill are bosses and mini-bosses (the dragon on Magma Man's stage, the elephant on Concrete Man's stage, the Boulder on Jewel Man's stage, and the Flower Clock on Hornet Man's stage). You can kill enemies that a boss releases such as flames, hornets, and missiles. You will need to utilize the brief moments of invincibility after you get hit to progress in the game.

Stock up on shock guards, E-tanks, and Beat calls to make your life a little easier. The 1/2 damage power-up should also be used when necessary (Jewel Man's stage or Wily Stage 3 are good examples). Utilize Rush Jet and Rush Coil to bypass some of the more difficult areas.

During the gravity sections in Wily 3, stay mostly to the left of the screen and use Plug ball to navigate. This way you don't accidentally kill something (like the last grabber in the final gravity section with the M tank). For the area with the green turrets, you can purposefully fall down the chasms to force Beat into carrying you around. Use this opportunity to soar over the turret but be quick about it as it doesn't last long. You can also purposefully get hit by the cannon shot and use the invincibility to progress.

Personally, I did this section using mostly the Rush Jet to navigate between the turrets, the spikes, and the lone sniper joe.

Conservationist
20
Clear the game by using the least amount of Weapon Energy possible.

First, go through all 8 stages without using ANY special weapons. This includes Rush Coil and Rush Jet (they count as weapons). You must only use the Mega Buster.

When you get to Wily's Castle, follow this simple outline:

Remember, try not to use the weapons required to progress more than once on each screen unless I say otherwise or you risk not unlocking the achievement.

Stage 1 - Use Tornado Blow to pass the first lift and the lifts in the room after it, then use Rush Jet once to clear the next section. Later, clear the first magma fountain with Rush Coil. On the next screen, use Rush Coil as soon as you leave the ladder, aim Mega Man onto the 2nd ladder from the left when you catapult off Rush. Use Rush Jet in the room with the bed of spikes after the pink teleporter room.

Stage 2 - Use Laser Trident to destroy the first block at the beginning of the stage and the next block near the spikes. Use Rush Coil or Concrete Shot to get up to the ledge with the Sniper Joe in the first room with the projectors. In the underwater portion, take the upper path and use Laser Trident 3 times to break the 3 blocks along the path to the next ladder.

Stage 3 - You won't need any special weapons on this stage.

Stage 4 - Use Concrete Shot to block the only impassable laser and utilize it as a stepping stone to continue.

Gamer's Day 20
Clear the game 5 times in 1 day.

You don't actually need to beat the entire game five times from start to finish. You can load up a save right before Wily's Castle and finish the game 5 times this way to unlock the achievement.

Whomp Wily! 5
Clear the game once.

Doesn't get much more straightforward than this. Beat the game once to unlock this.

Destroyer 20
Defeat your 1000th enemy.

You will obtain this simply by playing the game. If you're in a hurry to get it, go to Plug Man's stage and activate Jewel Satellite in an area with the respawning cylinder enemies and leave it until the achievement unlocks.

World Warrior 5
Defeat every type of enemy.

Some enemies must be killed with special weapons which you may not have the first time you go through a stage. Nearly everything can be killed with either a Black Hole Bomb or Tornado Blow. Don't forget to kill:

-The floor sentries in Jewel Man's/Concrete Man's stage (Black Hole Bomb)
-The mines in Splash Woman's stage (Black Hole Bomb)
-The sparks in Plug Man's stage (Jewel Satellite or Black Hole Bomb)
-The grabbers that drop from the ceiling in Galaxy Man's Stage
-The dragon mini-boss's flames (Tornado Blow or Black Hole Bomb)
-The balloons in Tornado Man's stage need to be killed by shooting the face, not the balloon itself
-Anything a boss shoots out (i.e. missiles, fish, hornets)

In Hornet Man's stage, the flower pots that shoot out different types of floral missiles are worthy of mentioning. Make sure you destroy each type of missile. I'm not sure if these count, but better safe than sorry.

Trusty Sidearm 20
Defeat the 8 Bosses with the Mega Buster.

Stock up on E-tanks and lay waste to the robot masters. It should be a cakewalk with your E-tank supply. This achievement can also be obtained in Wily Stage 4.

Blue Bomber 10
Defeat a Boss without getting damaged.

To me, the easiest boss to do this on is Hornet Man with the Magma Bazooka equipped. When he launches 3 hornets, aim the bazooka to hit them all in a single shot then simply jump over him as he runs across the screen wihle unloading charged shots at him. Rinse and repeat. Other easy bosses include: Splash Woman, Galaxy Man, and the first Wily Castle boss.

For Conservationist, you might want to add that you can also just use spike guards to cross the spikes in stage one(this will allow you to use 4 tornadoes instead of possible messing up with rush). You also might want to add that you should push the d-pad/thumb stick to the upper right while climbing the ladder to the 3 beam room. This will make sure rush lands on the right block so you can reach the ladder. It's also rumored that it counts how many times you used a special weapon. So if you have to re-setup rush, you might void the achievement.

Thanks for the advice. However, using Rush Jet during the spike/lift sequence is fairly straightforward if you back up a little from the ladder before activating him. Also about the '3 beam room,' you can access the 2nd ladder from the left from the same block as the ladder you come onscreen on. It is true that if you have to re-setup rush, you will most likely void the achievement though.

I've added a few extra details per your suggestion.

You don't even need to use the Tornado Blow at all in Wily Stage #1, you can use Concrete Shot as alternative, and I think it takes up even less energy.

I did that originally but for some reason the achievement mysteriously didn't unlock. I'm sure it works for many people though from what I've read across a number of boards but from my personal experience, the methods outlined in the guide work for sure.

As I've been playing through it, I think it easier to use Tornado Blow for the first lift. Jump over the spikes, then use Concrete Shot for the second part. After that just continue forward with Rush Jet, etc.

I'm going for Conservationist / Peacekeeper in the same run, and so far the only trouble I've had is accidentally killing the grabber. I started from the left side too, and it flew down and got killed before I even made my way over to the M-Tank.

Also, do you know if its okay to use the M-Tank as just an extra E-Tank?

M tank should be fine, as long as you don't shoot any extra special weapons.

I think its about how many times you use a special weapon, not how much energy it takes out. So I wouldn't use the concret shot just in case, but if it unlocked for someone else its your choice.

For the spike part, buy a few spike guards. This way you can be careful not to shoot the grabber, or risk stopping to close.

I'd rather be safe than sorry, so I'm going with the double Tornado Blow in for the first part of the Wily stage.

Use Plug Ball to navigate the 2nd gravity section. You lower the risk of killing anything, especially the grabber at the end.

I got through that part without too much difficulty, of course better safe than sorry. I couldn't use the Plug Ball for that part because I was trying to go for Conservationist at the same time.

I finally got it though. So much easier with the extra E-Tanks on hand. Now I've finally got all 200G from this game! Just in time for Protoman being released tomorrow, on the Wii anyway.

Nice! Congrats dude. I can't wait until the DLC hits the 360. Let me know how Protoman plays when you get it. I hope his shield ability remains intact...and I do miss sliding.

Thanks!

From the videos I saw of Proto Man he looks solid. He can shield, slide, charge his shot... take twice the damage and get pushed back twice as far from each hit.

Ah, I just watched some Protoman footage. Simply awesome. Out of all the things his sprite does, I think my favourite has to be that Capcom added his scarf. The fact that it billows in the wind while he's standing still put a smile on my face.

Wily stage 2 boss-head part

At wily stage 2 boss I always use the H.chaser at the head of the boss, and it works fine. I always shoot one even if the boss isn't "open" and when he does "open" to fire at you the first chaser, which is circulating around his critical area, automaticaly damages the boss and then I just keep firing. One shot takes away 2 "HP things" but I haven't tried with the black hole bomb yet so can't say for sure that it works better than that weapon. Good thing is that you don't have to jump or face the boss to hit with the weapon, guess it'd be the same with black hole though, and you can also hit the boss with 3-4 shots at a time which isn't to bad. Just a thought...

On Wily stage 4, don't use anything to cover the lasers - just walk through them and take the hit. You'll survive and not use any weapon energy at all.

You have to use Concrete Shot once, because there is a part you can not get to otherwise.

I see what you're saying. That is certainly a viable strategy however, the reason why I listed Laser Trident and BHB is for two very simple reasons:

1) Laser Trident is the boss's weakness. It can destroy the Head in two passes if you're accurate.

2) BHB will damage and suck the lasers into its vortex thus you don't even have to move while it siphons the Shark's life. Granted, you may run out of weapon energy if you use only BHB. I do recommend using it in tandem with the Laser Trident if you're going for 'Mr. Perfect.'

and a 3rd side note, I don't have any more room to list strategies in the first post due to character limit

Thanks for pointing out another strategy for the players mate.

Not true. Use a rush coil, take the hit, and then jump through the beam while you have invincibility. Plus, it's easier to make the jump with Rush coil than it is to jump on the block.

It's certainly an alternative, albeit a strange one. I can't quite wrap my head around why it's easier to run into a laser followed by catapulting off RC rather than simply shooting a block against the wall.

Not to mention you are still using weapon energy anyway with the RC; the exact same amount as the Concrete Shot (2 units) so there's no real benefit to it. I only brought this point up because of this earlier post:

In fact with the method you described, you lose out on a few units of health by using RC instead of Concrete Shot with no difference in outcome...

Rush Coil is still weapon energy and if you jump into the beam and get knocked back you'll have to use Rush Coil again to get over the platform, which would void the achievement. One shot with the Concrete Shot is much easier and safer.

I have a question regarding the Peacekeeper achievement. I was farming plug mans stage for screws when i noticed that the black megamans that appear in the dark room after you get the E-Tank walked right in to thoose spikey things that killes you with one hit and died. Does that count as a kill? Are the achivment void now? :/

You're still okay kiwii. So long as your shots don't kill the enemies that die (i.e. the Dark Mega Man's and underwater mines), you're safe.

Thanks for the quick answer I was also wondering when trying to do the Conservationist Achievement and you die at willys stage 1 after doing the tornado blow and using Jet to get over the spikes. Do i have to quit the game and load my game or can i just continue playing.

Yes, you will have to restart, I can confirm this. If you die after using a special weapon on any stage, and you restart to a point where you have to use it in that situation again, you will NOT get the achievement.

Also, it is not based on the number of shots you use throughout the game. It is situation specific. For example, if you do not shoot concrete blocks on the lasers on Wily's last level, you can not use those elsewhere - it will void the achievement.

Again, I have personally confirmed these statements because I learned the hard way the first time.

You only use it once. Use the rush coil, then jump inot the laser without rush. Then, while invincible, jump on your rush coil to pass the laser. I think it's a much easier and less risky way to pass the beam. If you shoot the concrete block too high, you can't get to your block, and you void the achievement. If you shoot it too low, you can't make the jump, and you void the achievement. The rush coil will work 100% of the time. It would suck to get that far and screw up the concrete shot and have to start over.

I strongly advise that everyone stay away from the concrete shot method. Be safe and use the Rush Coil method. You'll take a hit, but there is a helath pickup and plenty of easy bosses to fight to get your little scrap of health back.

Few questions, hope you guys can answer swiftly for me.

For Conservationalist:

In Wily 1, I usually do Coil over the 3 beam, climb up to the next screen and drop down on the ledge, then Rush Jet across. Can I still do this? I'm confused on how to get across here WITHOUT doing that.

Also in Wily 1, in the room above the portal room, how do I get across those spikes? I usually Rush Jet across... What am I to do here?

Here is my breakdown on Wily stage 1:

The first lift you will need to use Tornado.

The next screen directly above the first lift, you will have 2 lifts. Use Tornado again.

The next screen will be the one where there are several lifts, a bed of spikes, a free man, and some weapon energy refillers. Use the refiller on the left for your Tornado. Then, use Rush Jet to continue across. Crash your rush jet into the wall above the extra life pickup an hold to the right. This will stop the rush jet and land you on the free man pickup. From this ledge, walk off onto the lift to the right, and jump to the ladder.

When you get to the room with 1 horizontal laser, time a rush coil to jump to the ladder. Once you grab it, keep your rush coil equipped.

While entering the next room via a ladder (3 horiziontal lasers), immediately shoot a rush coil to your right wile climbing the ladder - you will have to be pretty quick. Then, once you get to the top of the ladder, jump onto your rush coil beating the laser fire, and hold to the right. The goal here is to grab the second ladder (middle ladder) on this jump. If you successfully grab it, continue to the next screen. When you reach this next screen, there will be a final horizontal laser waiting to blast you. Don't worry about it because you can beat this with speed. Simply finish climbing your ladder non-stop from the time yo enter the screen, and when it gets to the point where you are standing on the ladder and have to make a jump, jump to the ladder at the right, not the one above you, and thenn immediately jump straight up and grab that ladder. If done correctly, the laser fire will completely miss you.

Then, the last energy usage will be above the jump portals across the pit of spikes - use your rush jet. If you have spike boots, you can take the hits, but I suggest you save those for the underwater section on the next level. I used the rush jet on this part and still got the achievement. Not using it is foolish.

Hope that helps.

So awesome. Thanks a million, I'm 2 achievements from 200... Beat the game 1 minute over the 60 min mark, figured I'd get it eventually but it seems I'll have to make a specific run at that. Gonna try to perfect it tonight! Yay!

Too bad MS only allows 200 points for arcade titles... This game would be righteous with like 50 achievements.

Yeah, you'll get it if you're going for it. I beat the game in 42 minutes without even trying. I have beat the game about 10 times now, though. So, I know where every little baddie and trick will try to kill me. just make sure thast you play plug man's stage and completely stock up on E-tanks, M-Tank, 1/2 damage, spike boots, and Beats before you attempt Wily's castle. Use your 1/2 damage on Wily's last stage, and this achievement will be cake if you have 1 or 2 E-tanks left at this point. I finished with 7 left, but stock up just in case.
