How do I Empower the Ebony Blade?

I just received the Ebony Blade. It says it increases in power with the blood of deceit. I assumed that meant I had to kill a follower or someone that was a friend to me. I killed Lydia and nothing happened. I then proceeded to kill Farengar. When I did that the Daedra praised me for it. The sword didn't get any stronger though. Am I missing something here?

How do I make the sword stronger/get the legendary power? Any help would be appreciated. I checked the wiki, but it didn't have any information on how to unlock the swords true power. It did have screenshots showing its real enchantments and stats though.

Thanks to anyone that reads this and helps me out.

Believe it or not, it did improve... The enchantment at least. It was at 10 before, should be at 30 now. I too was super disappointed to see that this weapon was rather weak.

Could you explain what you mean by the enchantment went from 10 to 30? Sorry if I misunderstood you. Right now the enchantment on my sword says: "Absorbs the life essence of your foes. Strengthened by the blood od deciet." It doesn't mention any numbers.

I assume what you mean is that it now absorbs 30 health instead of the original 10? I will note that I reloaded the save from when I orginally killed Farengar with the Ebony Blade. The guards all attacked me. So I didn't want to have the giant bounty for slaughtering them.

I tried to kill Ysolda just a moment ago. Since I'm pretty sure she is in love with me. The Daedra didn't say anything though. I thought I'd test this by killing Farengar again. This time I didn't recevie any praise from the Daedra for killing him.

Maybe you can only improve the sword if you immediately kill your loved ones with it without doing any other quests. I have completed a couple since I received the blade. If that's the case, I'm disappointed. I loved having a katana in Skyrim.

It's not just loved ones. You can kill anyone who's become "friends" with you, whether it was through a fist-fight, a quest, or even investing in their business.

How many do you have to kill? And how do I track my progress? I saw the empty enchantment charge bar on the weapon. I thought maybe it would slowly fill as I killed more people, but I have no idea if this is the case or not. I'm afraid I may have messed up by not going on a friend killing spree as soon as I got this weapon. Since now if I kill anyone that is close to me, the Daedra never says anything. Even though I'm killing the same person. Could someone answer these new questions?

I know how the enchantment bar works. I need to know the answers to the questions I posted.

To empower the ebony blade, you have to kill friends. Each friend you kill gives the Health absorb enchantment 2 extra points, to a maximum of 20 extra points, making 30 health absorb all up when fully empowered.

So the Ebony Blade starts with Health absorb 10 points, then after killing 10 friends it will be Health absorb 30. That is as high as it will go. Hope this helps.

Both the Blade's Sword and Dragonbane are katanas, pretty decent too when upgraded through smithing.

Keep in mind it swings about 2x as fast than a regular greatsword. So take it from me it's a sword worthy of keeping.

To fully upgrade you need more then 2 friend kills if i remember correctly you'll need 8 or 10 kills , keep in mind even though its a 2 handed weapon it's the only one in the game that benafits from the one handed skill tree

Sadly it's one of the few daedric items that cannot be upgraded with smithing.

seems pretty weak to me. It looks awesome, but only does about 30 damage. Can you make it stronger?

You must kill 10 people who are good friends of your character. I remember just hiring mercenaries and then killing them in the wilderness with the blade. You can also kill people who you have helped out. An example of this is if you gave Narfi his deceased sister's necklace, he is considered friendly. You could them kill Narfi and his killing would count for upgrading the blade (you kill him in a Dark Brotherhood quest). I believe killing your spouse also counts, but I am not 100% sure (never have a partner myself). Killing beggars after giving them some gold also counts I believe. I will leave a link to the site that I used when powering this blade.

As a good side note, I quote the UESP page listed in my last post "A good way to determine whether or not an NPC is considered a "friend" is to listen to how they greet the player. People that say things like "You've been a good friend to me" or "It's a fine day with you around" are all viable targets for powering up the Ebony Blade."- UESP
