Achievement Guide and Road Map

Overview:
-Estimated achievement difficulty: 5
-Offline: 50 (1000)
-Online: 0 (0)
-Approximate amount of time to 1000: 15-25 hours
-Minimum number of playthroughs needed: 3
-Number of missable achievements: 0
-Do cheat codes disable achievements? No cheats
-Does difficulty affect achievements? Yes
-Glitchy achievements: None
-Unobtainable achievements: None
-Extra equipment needed? Kinect

Introduction:
Rise of Nightmares by Sega is a first-person survival horror game for Kinect. This is no rail-shooter; you can move anywhere in the game world, and interact with objects by using realistic gestures. While the controls may take some getting used to, once you have them down the game is tons of fun. The thrill of hacking and slashing creatures to pieces with your hands never gets tired, though your arm will.

Step 1: Humane Playthrough
The three achievements for playing through on each difficulty do not stack, so you might as well start on the easiest setting. This will also allow you to get familiar with the game and its controls.

In this playthrough, make it a point to kill every creature you see, pick up every weapon, tarot card and detective’s tape, and view all secret events. This will net you Creature Hunter, Tarot Master, Master Sleuth, and Sharp-Eyed Traveler. You will also earn progress towards, and likely earn many of the weapon-specific kill achievements. Your kill counts carry over to each playthrough, so there’s no need to try and get all the kill-based achievements in one go.

Beating the game on this difficulty will get you Nightmare Escapee, and unlock the Torture difficulty and Endless Nightmare mode.

Step 2: No Mercy Playthrough
Now play again on the normal difficulty, No Mercy. Finish up any weapon-based kill achievements you can. Completing the game this time will earn you Nightmare Defeater.

Step 3: Torture Playthrough without Dying
Now that you’ve beaten the game twice, you should know what you’re doing. This playthrough can be tough, as you can die in one or two hits. If you do die, shut the Xbox off before the Game Over screen appears to make sure your death doesn’t count. If successful, you will earn both Nightmare Vanquisher and Master of the Nightmare.

Step 4: Endless Nightmare
Now comes the difficult part, Act 10, which is on Torture difficulty. You need to complete each of the three scenes within the time allotted to get an A rank. Doing so will get you Escape From the Grasp of Evil, Live to Tell the Tale, Fight or Flight, and Endless Nightmare.

While playing, make sure to pick up the few weapons in this act that are needed for Weapon Master.

Conclusion:
At this point you will likely have all the achievements. If you are missing any, such as a weapon kill achievement, load up an appropriate scene and get it done. Celebrate your 1000 in Rise of Nightmares!

Awards Showcase 1,000 Posts Micro Guide - Silver Submit - Gold Achievement Guide - Silver Road Map - Silver
Total Awards: 5 (more» ...)
Destiny's Path - 5
Cards of Insight.
Unlocked Description: Found a Tarot Card for the first time.

This can first be unlocked in Act 1. Tarot Card 0 (The Fool) can be found in the dining car. Once you side-step the guy on the phone, turn around, and you will see the card to the right of the door from which you entered.

For a complete list of Tarot Cards, see HERE.

Fading Footprints - 5
Forgotten Records.
Unlocked Description: Found a Detective's Tape for the first time.

This can first be unlocked in Act 1. Detective's Tape 01 (In Eastern Europe) can be found at the end of the dining car. When facing the dining car exit, turn around and you will see another door. Open this to enter a small kitchen, where you will find the tape on a counter.

For a complete list of Detective's Tapes, see HERE.

Creature Executioner - 15
Attacks from below are effective against creatures too.
Unlocked Description: Defeated at least 20 creatures with a spear trap.

A spear trap is a section of floor that has spears which pop out at regular intervals. You need to get 20 creatures to die on these spears, either by knocking or leading them onto the spears.

A good place to get this is in Act 3. After the TV room, there will be a long passage with spear traps and several enemies. Kick or lead them onto the spears to kill them, and then kill yourself. Repeat until you unlock the achievement.

In Act 10-2 there are spear traps that materialize from purple vortices. These also count for this achievement, but there are very few enemies in the area.

Iron Fist - 10
Keep punching. Don't stop.
Unlocked Description: Defeated at least 50 creatures with a fist-type weapon.

Kill 50 enemies with weapons worn over both fists. These include:
Brass Knuckles
Creature Gloves
Golden Knuckles
Katara
Shock Knuckles

Your kill counts carry over from each playthrough, so this will eventually unlock this as long as you use this type of weapon when available.

Knife User - 10
Keep swinging that knife.
Unlocked Description: Defeated at least 50 creatures using a knife.

Kill 50 enemies with knives. These include:
Survival Knife
Yuli's Blade

Your kill counts carry over from each playthrough, so this will eventually unlock this as long as you use this type of weapon when available.

Creature Fighter - 20
You cannot always run from danger.
Unlocked Description: Defeated at least 100 creatures.

Kill 100 creatures by any means. This will likely unlock sometime in Act 3.

Creature Slayer - 50
Leave nothing moving in your wake.
Unlocked Description: Defeated at least 500 creatures.

Kill 500 creatures by any means. This will likely unlock sometime in Act 7, or the beginning of your second playthrough, depending on how vigilant you are at killing things.

Creature Slicer - 15
You need to lure them into their doom.
Unlocked Description: Defeated at least 20 creatures with the slicer.

The slicer is a large spinning blade that slices across a room, either from the wall or floor. You need to get 20 creatures to die on these blades, either by knocking or leading them onto the blades.

While there are many locations with slicers, the best place to work on the achievement is in Act 3. You'll come to a point where there is a locked door at the end of a large room, and you need to pull a lever to open the door. Pulling this lever also activates a pair of large slicers, and lets lots of creatures into the room. Simply bait the creatures into walking into the blades, and they will die. Once the room is clear, kill yourself on the blades, and repeat until the achievement unlocks.

Invitation to a Nightmare - 5
This is where it all begins.
Unlocked Description: Began the Nightmare.

This achievement is earned for starting a new game for the first time. It will unlock after you choose your difficulty setting, while the game loads.

Nice Gesture! - 5
Try touching things.
Unlocked Description: Used a gesture to operate an object for the first time.

This game relies on your intuition and common sense to perform the majority of in-game actions, such as opening a door, climbing a ladder, or pulling a lever. You will get this achievement in Act 0 when you open a door for the first time.

The First Kill - 5
Subdue your fear and confront the horrific.
Unlocked Description: Defeated your first creature.

In Act 0, once you make it out of your prison cell, kill any of the enemies you encounter in the circular passage outside. The kill can be done with or without a weapon. Once the first one is dead, the achievement will unlock.

Brawl King - 15
Don't pick things up.
Unlocked Description: Defeated at least 50 creatures using only punches and kicks.

Kill 50 enemies by punching or kicking. You can punch with your left hand at any time, and with your right when you are not carrying a weapon, but can kick any time.

These are the weakest attacks, so either work on this when your current weapon breaks and before you pick up another, or try and get it done in the early stages that have weaker enemies. You can also whittle an enemy's health down with a weapon, and finish it with a kick.

Your kill counts carry over from each playthrough, so this will eventually unlock this as long as you use unarmed attacks when possible.

Creature Hunter - 30
Defeat as many kinds of creatures as you can.
Unlocked Description: Defeated every type of creature.

This is achievement is earned by killing one of every type of creature in the game, not counting bosses. If you make sure to kill everything you encounter, you'll unlock this in Act 7.

Weapon Master - 30
Pick up every weapon you see.
Unlocked Description: Obtained every type of weapon.

Pick up one of every weapon in the game. You do not need to get a kill with every weapon. You will know when you have picked up a new weapon as a text description will appear in the top-left of the screen.

There are 39 weapons in the game. For their locations, click HERE.

Creature Crusher - 15
Kick'em to their doom!
Unlocked Description: Defeated at least 20 creatures using spiked walls.

A spiked wall is a section of wall that has spikes protruding from it. You need to get 20 creatures to die on these spikes, by kicking or punching them into the spikes.

In Act 3, after the passing through the passageway that has lots of puddles, you will turn the power on which causes the puddles to become electrified. At this point you need to go down a ladder to proceed. In this underground passage, there are spiked walls and a handful of enemies. Kick or punch them into the spikes to kill them, and then kill yourself. Repeat until you unlock the achievement.

Total Awards: 5 (more» ...)
Creature Bomber - 15
Burn baby, burn!
Unlocked Description: Defeated at least 30 creatures with explosives.

This achievement is earned by killing 30 enemies with explosive crates. Kills made with Volatile Test Tubes do not count towards this.

There are numerous parts of the game with explosive crates. A good place to work on this is in Act 3. Just after you pull the lever to open the door and activate the slicers, you will enter a room with several red crates, a stairway up, and three enemies in the room. You can try getting enemies from the previous room to follow you. Lure the enemies near the crates, then attack the crates, causing them to explode, killing the enemies nearby and very likely you. Repeat until you unlock the achievement.

Craftsman - 10
Dismember a single creature while leaving it alive.
Unlocked Description: Sliced off three creature body parts without a powered weapon, leaving the creature alive.

This is earned by cutting off a creature's head and two arms. This can be pretty tricky, as you'll often kill them before you can remove the third part.

Grab a sharp weapon, like a Knife, Machete or Hatchet. Try to remove each arm first, by swinging directly at each arm. Once both arms are gone, remove the head by swinging down or stabbing at it. If successful, the head will explode, and the body will stumble around for a moment before finally dying.

Refrain from swinging wildly at it, as that will just cause more damage and kill it before you want to. Do not attack the creature after removing it's parts; allow it to die on its own.

Watcher - 5
The actions of others are fascinating.
Unlocked Description: Discovered your first "Secret Event."

This can first be unlocked in Act 1, The Train. After reading the note from Kate, proceed along the train car until you see an open compartment on the left. Inside, there is a female student looking out the window. Select the "Look" command on-screen to get the achievement.

For a complete list of secret events, see HERE.

Mad Bomber - 10
Keep tossing those tubes.
Unlocked Description: Defeated at least 50 creatures using test tubes.

Kill 50 creatures with exploding test tubes. These include:
Golden Test Tube
Volatile Test tube

Your kill counts carry over from each playthrough, so this will eventually unlock this as long as you use this type of weapon when available.

Dismantler - 10
It's easy to cut things down to size.
Unlocked Description: Defeated at least 100 creatures with a powered weapon.

Kill 100 creatures with a powered weapon. Powered weapons to not auto-aim. These include, but may not be limited to:
Bloody Chainsaw
Chainsaw
Drill
Meat Mincer

Your kill counts carry over from each playthrough, so this will eventually unlock this as long as you use this type of weapon when available.

Sage - 10
Let loose with loads of energy.
Unlocked Description: Defeated at least 100 creatures with Azoth.

Kill 100 creatures with the glove of Azoth. You will obtain this weapon in Act 4, just after you climb the tower and fight the transformed puppet survivors.

Use the glove by pointing your left arm up, and touching your right hand to your left elbow. You can charge up the weapon by holding this pose for a few seconds. Fire by thrusting your left palm outward. Charged shots can take out small groups of enemies.

Your kill counts carry over from each playthrough, so this will eventually unlock this as long as you use this weapon to make kills.

Pipe-Layer - 10
You can use tools too.
Unlocked Description: Defeated at least 50 creatures with a pipe-like weapon.

Kill 50 creatures with exploding pipe-like weapons. These include, but may not be limited to:
Bloody Metal Bat
Bone Crusher
Iron Pipe

Your kill counts carry over from each playthrough, so this will eventually unlock this as long as you use this type of weapon when available.

Axe Chopper - 10
It's good for more than chopping down trees.
Unlocked Description: Defeated at least 50 creatures with a wood-cutting weapon.

Kill 50 creatures with chopping weapons. These include, but may not be limited to:
Golden Hatchet
Hatchet
Machete
Silver Hatchet

Your kill counts carry over from each playthrough, so this will eventually unlock this as long as you use this type of weapon when available.

Scavenger - 10
Take weapons from creatures.
Unlocked Description: Defeated at least 50 creatures using arm weapons dropped by creatures.

Kill 50 creatures with weapons dropped by enemies. These include:
Creature Claw
Knife Arm
Power Saw Arm
Stun Rod Arm

Your kill counts carry over from each playthrough, so this will eventually unlock this as long as you use this type of weapon when available.

Headhunter - 20
They're creatures. It's okay.
Unlocked Description: Beheaded 50 creatures.

When fighting enemies, preferably with a sharp weapon, aim for the head. You will often remove the head while doing this. Kill 50 creatures in this manner.

Multi-Hitter - 10
Knock out more than one at a time.
Unlocked Description: Defeated at least three creatures in one swing.

Killing three enemies or more with one attack is tricky do with regular melee weapons, as it is hard to hit every enemy in a group at the same time. Rather, get a Golden Test Tube and toss it at a group of three enemies. If they all die, the achievement will unlock.

Lightning Reflexes - 20
Demonstrate outstanding response time.
Unlocked Description: Performed at least 50 dodge gestures in battle.

When fighting bosses, you may be prompted to perform a gesture in order to dodge an attack. Perform 50 of these successfully to unlock this achievement. All bosses have attacks that must be dodged with a gesture, so this should unlock by the end of your first playthrough.

Limb Lopper - 10
Plants aren't the only things you can prune and trim.
Unlocked Description: Defeated at least 100 creatures with a scissor-type weapon.

Kill 100 creatures with scissor-like weapons (weapons that have a hinge). These include;
Bone Shears
Giant Tongs
Hedge Shears

Your kill counts carry over from each playthrough, so this will eventually unlock this as long as you use this type of weapon when available.

Ernst - 10
Such fierce strength.
Unlocked Description: Defeated at least 100 creatures with Ernst's chains.

In Act 6, you play as Ernst, the large monster that launches chains from his hands. Kill 100 enemies with these chains to unlock the achievement. You can replay Act 6 to get the required kills if desired.

in Act 10-1 and 10-3, you can find the weapon, Ernst's Chain, which also counts towards this achievement.

Brute - 5
There is more than one way of opening a door.
Unlocked Description: Kicked open a door.

There are lots of doors in this game. When prompted to open a door, perform a kick to knock it open instead, and you will get this achievement.

Secret Achievements

Master Sleuth - 50
Found all of the Detective's Tapes.

There are 22 Detective's Tapes scattered throughout Acts 1 through 8. Find them all to earn this achievement. Your collectibles carry over from each playthrough, so if you miss any, you can replay Acts from the Scene Select menu, or pick them up on another playthrough.

For a list of all Detective's Tapes, click HERE.

Tarot Master - 50
Obtained all Tarot Cards.

There are 22 Tarot Cards scattered throughout Acts 1 through 8. Find them all to earn this achievement. Your collectibles carry over from each playthrough, so if you miss any, you can replay Acts from the Scene Select menu, or pick them up on another playthrough.

For a list of all Tarot Cards, click HERE.

Nightmare Defeater - 50
Cleared the main game on the "No Mercy" difficulty level.

"No Mercy" is the normal difficulty. To select this setting, choose New Game at the Main Menu. Enemies do a fair amount of damage, but still take quite a few hits to kill you.

Complete all acts on this difficulty to earn this achievement. It will unlock after the cut-scene that is Act 9, which takes place after the credits, so do not turn off the game until you watch it.

Nightmare Vanquisher - 100
Cleared the main game on the "Torture" difficulty level.

See “Master of the Nightmare.”

Nightmare Escapee - 30
Cleared the main game on the "Humane" difficulty level.

"Humane" is the easiest difficulty. To select this setting, choose New Game at the Main Menu. Enemies do little damage.

Complete all acts on this difficulty to earn this achievement. It will unlock after the cut-scene that is Act 9, which takes place after the credits, so do not turn off the game until you watch it.

It is recommended that you find all collectibles on this playthrough, so you can get through the higher settings faster.

Aaron and Katja - 10
Cleared Act 0.

Story related and cannot be missed. This will unlock after you "escape" the prison and you see the title card.

The Train - 10

Story related and cannot be missed. This will unlock shortly after your fight with Ernst in the prison.

The Forest - 10
Cleared Act 5.

Story related and cannot be missed. This will unlock after you get knocked out at the altar.

Escape From the Grasp of Evil - 30
Obtained an A-Rank in Act 10, Scene 1.

To get an A rank, you must complete the scene quickly, and with a decent, but not necessarily high kill count. Move from area to area swiftly, stopping only to kill those enemies directly in your way. Keep your arms down unless you need to block or attack; the auto-aim will become frustrating quickly, as it will spin you around in directions you may not want to go.

Scene 1 takes place in the catacombs and graveyard from Act 2. An A rank can be achieved with at least 37,120 points, but lower might be possible.

Here’s a great video walkthrough by YouTube user Landscape97.

Live to Tell the Tale - 30
Obtained an A-Rank in Act 10, Scene 2.

Scene 2 begins in the TV room from Act 3, and takes you through the bedrooms, ending in the booby-trapped underground passage. There are very few enemies in this scene; your main task will be avoiding one-hit kill traps. An A rank can be achieved with at least 38,820 points, but lower might be possible.

Here’s a great video walkthrough by YouTube user Landscape97.

Fight or Flight - 30
Obtained an A-Rank in Act 10, Scene 3.

Scene 3 takes place in the forest from Act 5. It can be tricky to navigate your first time through, as there are multiple portals you can take, levers to pull, and an item to find. There are tons of enemies here, and it is best to avoid combat when possible, especially in the area with the hordes of chef creatures. Keep your arms down and kick enemies away, killing only those necessary to clear a path. An A rank can be achieved with at least 52,360 points, but lower might be possible.

Here’s a great video walkthrough by YouTube user Landscape97.

Sharp-Eyed Traveler - 20
Discovered all "Secret Events."

There are 12 Secret Events throughout Acts 1 through 8. Find them all to earn this achievement. Your discovered events carry over from each playthrough, so if you miss any, you can replay Acts from the Scene Select menu, or find them up on another playthrough.

For a list of all Secret Events, click HERE.

Endless Nightmare - 60
Survived the Endless Nightmare.

The Endless Nightmare is Act 10, and must be unlocked by first completing the game on any difficulty. The difficulty setting for Act 10 is "Torture" and cannot be changed. The goal is to complete each stage in the time allotted, without dying. You only get one life to complete each scene, so if you die, you must start over again.

To get this achievement, you must complete all three scenes in Act 10, which are selectable from the Scene Select menu. See the three achievements for obtaining an A rank on each scene for more.

Master of the Nightmare - 60
Cleared the "TORTURE" difficulty without dying.

"Torture" is the hardest difficulty, and must be unlocked by first completing the game on either "Humane" or "No Mercy." To select this setting, choose New Game at the Main Menu.

You can die in one or two hits on this setting. The key to surviving is to avoid fights whenever possible, and not to get overwhelmed by groups of enemies. If you are injured, back away if you have room, or block by keeping your arms up. You can still die while blocking if you are already near death.

If you do die, either shut-off your Xbox or quit to the dashboard before YOU ARE DEAD appears on screen. You will have to continue from your last checkpoint, but your death will not count.

Complete all acts on this difficulty without dying to earn this achievement. It will unlock after the cut-scene that is Act 9, which takes place after the credits, so do not turn off the game until you watch it.

To minimize your playthroughs, it is recommended that you go for this achievement at the same time as "Nightmare Vanquisher" - clearing the game on "Torture" difficulty.

For a no-death Torture walkthrough, see YouTube user Landscape97's run HERE.

Thoughts? Feedback?

I placed the difficulty at a 5, because the controls can be troublesome at times, and Endless Nightmare is frustrating.

I estimate the total time to 1000 at 15-25 hours, as each play through can be completed in about 5 hours, giving ten more hours for Act 10 and clean-up.

Does anyone want to share their A-rank scores for Act 10? I'd like to add the lowest known score for an A on each stage.

I think this is an awesome guide dude, it will be very helpful.

I'm still trying to get used to the controls lol.., and unfortunately the 'no dying' run is going to be a pain as I've died several times already, and some were pretty cheap IMO.

I have a question, I picked up a Katana, what weapon achievement category would that fall under? I didn't see it in the guide.

Honestly, a lot of the weapons don't clearly fall into a specific category, which is why a lot of my descriptions add "but may not be limited to" those weapons listed.

If I had to guess, I would imagine the katana would fit in either the wood-chopping or knife weapon category. If you get the achievement for either of those while using the katana, let me know.

I don't have the knife kills achievement yet, but I do have the wood-cutting achievement. I really hope it's the knife achievement.

However, maybe it's the power weapon category? I killed enemies in one hit with it, and it showed up in the same crate I found a meat-mincer in on a previous play session.

Actually, that achievement is for powered weapons, that is, weapons that need a power source or a motor, not power weapons, which would be really strong weapons.

So the katana wouldn't work for the powered weapons achievement.

I have a question:

- Since the game remembers your tally for kills, does it remember things like Tapes/Cards/Weapon pick ups? So, I wouldn't have to start a whole new playthrough, I can just pick the act and get what I need? Once I do that, could I just quit out, or do I have to finish the act for it to count? I know I missed a couple of weapons.

Correct. If you miss a collectible, you can snag it on another playthrough, or replay the act to get it.

If you replay the act, I would suggest playing until you hit a checkpoint before quitting.

Started playing this tonight. The controls are a bit frustrating for sure, but not a bad game. Got to the end of Act 3 before needing a break for a smoke. LOL...Gotta quit smoking!

Nice guide though man, It'll be very helpful.

Cheers!

Helpful guide.. I'm enjoying the game as well! I'm frikin sore though! Played for 2 days straight, finished my first easy playthrough and all the collectibles on Tuesday, then wednesday did all the Act 10 scenes which were frustratingly hard!

I think 1 of my achievements is glitched though.. it's the Pipe Layer achievement.. I played Act 10-3 numerous times using the bone crusher weapon and this hasn't unlocked for me yet. Maybe I'm sitting at 49 and just don't know it.. I'll pick it back up next week!

I tried playing the endless mode for about fifteen seconds before I gave up due to the auto facing an enemy near you feature, and moved on to going through easy mode getting my collectables and weapon related achievements.

By the way, within those fifteen seconds I did get two weapon related achievements, though. From what I could see, those levels have a lot of unique weapons in them, and a lot of enemies, so they'd probably be good spots to grind out the weapons, if you wanted to.

I'd suggest just using the Iron Pipe to be safe; you can grab it in Act 0 and get quite a few kills there. It's been a while since I've played, and while I am fairly certain the Bone Crusher counts for Pipe Layer, it is possible it doesn't.

Yea, I ended up getting it with the Iron Pipe while doing my normal difficulty playthrough.

Also; the Icesaw counts towards the "Axe Chopper" achievement as well. Since that achievement unlocked for me while swinging it.

And for the "Master of the Nightmare" you can simply dashboard. I just held a controller in my offhand just in case. I only died about 5 times during my nightmare run. It just reverts you back to your last save.
