Achievement Guide/Roadmap (Eng)

Akai Katana (Shin): Achievement Guide/Roadmap (Eng.)

Copyright:
This guide is written for the sole use of x360a; if you wish to use this information please ask first.

Overview:
Estimated achievement difficulty: 8-9/10
Approximate amount of time to 1000: 10+ hours (Skill Dependant)
Minimum number of playthroughs needed: 3+
Number of missable achievements: 0
Glitched achievements: None
Do cheat codes disable achievements? No (There are none)
Does difficulty affect achievements? Yes, Between Normal and Novice modes.

General Achievement Note: Certain achievements will only unlock in either Origin (AK) and/or Slash (Shin) modes, Climax (Zetsu) mode does not unlock achievements. The following modes (either Origin/Slash) will be displayed under their descriptions to see what achievement gets unlocked in which mode. Also, some achs. can be unlocked with Novice turned on (Novice:OK). And changing the game settings/options will still allow you to unlock achievements.

Intro: Akai Katana (Shin) is the 4th Horizontal shoot-em-up/SHUMP brought to you by CAVE (who also made DeathSmiles 1&2 and Progear), in this one, a band of rebels are up to stop the war and power of the Blood Katana’s led by Bashou Saionji and his tyrannical empire (the 10 suns).

How to/Controls:
Although this game looks similar to Deathsmiles, the controls are not, but the structure on the game and scoring is different.

=Offensive Shot, =Defensive Shot, =Phantom/Power Up, =Bomb

Part 1: Easy Achievements
In this part, you’ll most likely earn these achievements easily without any problems, of course some of which might take some skill, such as…

1. Mid-Boss and Stage Boss Specific ones.
2. Energy (Green) and Score Items (Yellow), plus endings for the 3 “guides”.
3. Any other Misc. Achievements

Part 2: Hard Achievements
Although this being a CAVE game per se, it’s not without its difficult achievements, such as…

1. Completing the game without Continuing (1 Credit Clears).
2. Earning specific Hi-Scores (in specific modes).
3. And for the truly skilled, getting to the last stage without losing a single life to get the true ending.
----------------------------------------------------
Tips on 1CC/Scoring, and difference in plane types. (Slash Mode specifics for plane types.)

Type 1 = Marigold (Tsubaki/Sumire): Speed, Linear Shot type, Option can be held, Katana's and Orbs attack in Linear/Straight direction, also, Phantom Attack is linear to the character.

Type 2 = Orchid (Botan/Kikyou): Balance, Half-Spread shots, Op. cannot be held, K's and O's can attack in any direction wherever you position it, P.A. can be used anywhere while held down and specifically positioned.

Type 3 = Sakura (Shion/Suzu): Power, Spread Shots, Op. can be held, K's and O's can attack in a spread or straight direction if positioned carefully, P.A. has short range, but powerful.

Slash:
-You need to use your swords point-blank to get more points.
-You also need to keep your combo by picking up steel. Extremely important, because the gold value rises with combo hits.
-The more swords you launch, the more gold and points you get.
-Therefore, more swords at one time, less sword launches is better than launching two or three swords all the time
-Type-2 ship is probably the easiest to score high with.

Origin:
- The mode seems simpler, but has to be played very aggressively; high scoring harder than in Slash
- The key to efficient scoring is immediately recharging your phantom energy after exiting phantom mode, all the time. You need to plan out where you do your recharges, ad hoc recharging is unlikely to work.
- It's better to do several short ~200 hit phantom mode attacks than keep one going for a long time to squeeze out the 256 hits.
- Scoring is a lot easier if you've lost a life: your energy meter grows, making gathering gold less time critical.
- But if you have just 1 or 2 lives left, your rank is so low, that getting gold and score becomes difficult in the later stages.
- Type-3 ship is definitely the easiest for scoring.
- Type-3 can get a huge amount of energy items by switching between laser and shot while keeping the option on top of an enemy, making recharges easier.

The Hidden Form - 15
Equip a total of 16 katanas and 16 steel orbs on your Phantom.

This may take some practice, but better off in Novice Difficulty with 1 life set, while in Phantom form, you must have 16 Katanas and steel orbs at the same time, do not press/hold , or you’ll release the orbs. (Slash, Novice:OK)

Destroying the Limit - 20
Earn 3000 hits (Slash Mode).

Use the defensive shot , or the use of the steel orbs/katana’s to raise the hit counter. Note, there is about a 5 second time limit before the hit counter resets, although getting hit still keeps the hit counter though. (Novice:OK)

400 Million and Counting - 10
Earn 400,000,000 points (Slash Mode).

See: 800 Million and Counting

600 Million and Counting - 15
Earn 600,000,000 points (Slash Mode).

See: 800 Million and Counting

800 Million and Counting - 20
Earn 800,000,000 points (Slash Mode).

Watch this playthrough of Slash Mode to see the hi-score go over 800 Million.

Absorption Power - 5
Absorb items into your ship.

Simply hold the shot button with your option up front, then release to absorb them. (Origin, Novice:OK)

The Gold Ring - 5
Rotate over 200 score items (large) around your ship while playing as the Phantom.

While in Phantom mode, using the Offensive Shot will earn you score items, using the defensive shot will trigger suicide bullets which is useful for earning more score items.
(Origin, Novice:OK)

Decay and Dissolution - 10
Lose more than 20 score items that were rotating around your ship during a game.

This can happen as soon as you earn score items while in Phantom mode, or after back in fighter mode holding the shot button around your option to hold score items, the score items will disappear if the shot button is still held. (Origin, Novice:OK)

Big Catch - 5
Rotate 72 guiding energy items (large) around your ship.

Easier way to earn this on Novice Difficulty, Use Type 1 and hover the option to the right while holding/using the shot to gather Large “E”/Green energy items, make sure they hit enemy bullets to make them grow. Note: They can disappear for a couple of seconds if not absorbed into the ship. (Origin, Novice:OK)

128 Hits! - 5
Earn 128 hits (Origin Mode).

You can earn hits in Origin while in Phantom mode while shooting offensively, or by damaging/defeating a mid-boss/stage boss. (Novice:OK)

256 Hits! - 10
Earn 256 hits (Origin Mode).

See: 128 Hits! (Novice:OK)

Back Against the Wall - 30
While in Phantom form, filled up the screen with more than 800 bullets.

Easier to do this is on stage 5 or 6 on the stage bosses, best have a full energy gauge with 1 life left, once the bosses life is low, turn into the Phantom, and head straight on towards the boss (since you'll be protected by the barrier) to unlock this. (Origin, Novice:OK)

Bullet-Proof - 30
Reflected more than 1000 bullets while in Phantom form.

This will happen naturally in total once you don’t shoot with the offensive shot, in which bullets will bounce off your Phantom. (Origin, Novice:OK)

#^&@%&! - 5
Got hit by a bullet in Phantom form, and then died from another bullet immediately afterward.

Self-Explanatory (Origin, Novice:OK)

100 Million and Counting - 10
Earn 100,000,000 points (Origin Mode).

See: The Sharpened Blade

200 Million and Counting - 15
Earn 200,000,000 points (Origin Mode).

See: The Sharpened Blade

The Sharpened Blade - 20
Earn 300,000,000 points (Origin Mode).

Here a playthrough of Origin mode on how to score really well.

Secret Achievements

The True Mission - 50
Watch the True Ending.

This requires you not to lose a life in stages 1 through 6, after that, you’ll fight Bashou in his TLB (True Last Boss)/Harder form, beat him to get the true ending. (Slash only)

Although you can use bombs and can get hit by the lasers and it'll still count as long as you don't lose a life. Refer to the video on "800 Million and Counting" to see how its done. Or here if you want to know...

When in doubt…Bomb! - 5
Deployed a bomb directly after starting the game.

Press once the game starts to use the bomb.

Melted - 5
Died from an enemy laser.

Simple on stage 1, of course this may take some time, just get hit by the red lasers by the enemies and mid-boss/boss.

Sheer Grit - 5
Clear the game without summoning your Phantom.

Do not press for the entire game, this requires no continues, which makes it very difficult.
A handy guide from Shmups-System 11 is right here, you can also obtain it in Novice Difficulty, but still very difficult. http://bit.ly/LlVhUP

UUUURRRGGGH - 5
Died immediately after starting the game.

Simply run into an enemy or a bullet head on once you start the game.

6000 Hits - 40
Achieve a 6000 hit combo (Slash Mode).

See: Destroying the Limit (Novice:OK)
, Refer to the video on "800 Million and Counting" for details.

9999 Hits - 55
Achieve a 9999 hit combo (Slash Mode).

See: Destroying the Limit (Novice:OK)
, Refer to the video on "800 Million and Counting" for details.

Yo Stray, thanks for the guide/list. How can you have both 16 orbs and katanas? Like, what would the button input be? This is one of the more confusing shmups on account of the fact that the button config is so limited.
-Thanks in advance

EDIT: Nevermind I got it.

EDIT: Nevermind I got it.

You can't the achievement description is wrong, here's what I wrote on true achievements it does take some practice, getting 16 katanas or orbs on there own will not unlock it. Couldn't unlock this till a Japanese friend noticed the error and helped me out.

"First off I'll start by saying that the achievement description is wrong for the English version it should read:

"Equip a total of 8 katanas and 8 steel orbs on your Phantom."

Anyone who views the achievement description for the Japanese version will notice the mistake. Also it doesn't take much to notice you can only have 16 items around your ship at any moment.

Once you know this it's rather easy to do, first off however this achievement can only be done in "Slash" mode and it's slightly easier with only one life as you can have more phantom mode energy when on one life.

Following guide is for the DEFAULT CONTROLS

First off you need to get eight steel orbs and turn them into katanas, to do this in the ship form shoot with the “RT” shot and kill the enemies to collect steel. You want to collect enough steel to make exactly eight steels orbs, you can see how much steel you have collected by the small circles that appear in the ring around your ship. The eighth circle is the one you want to stop at, just before you complete a full half circle around your ship.

(Note: for the next part the more phantom energy you have the longer you can stay in phantom form making this achievement easier to do. Also do not change back to the ship form else you will lose any items you have around your ship.)

Now once you have eight circles around your ship press the “X button” to swap to phantom form this will convert the collected steel to steel orbs. Now comes the tricky part you need to launch all eight steel orbs by press and holding the “A button” into an enemy to turn them into a katanas, each one must hit an enemy to change into a katana. If one of the orbs fails to change into a katana you will have to start over.

You will likely now be low on phantom form energy, but while still in phantom form and with eight katanas now flying around you. You now need to use the “RT” shot of the phantom form to collect steel again this time to get eight more steel orbs to appear around you. Unlike in ship form however in phantom form as soon as you get enough steel for a steel orb it will automatically appear around you.

As soon as you get eight steels orbs and eight katanas around you the achievement should pop, but be sure not to fire or lose any of the katanas as you collect the final set of steel orbs, else you’ll be starting over again, same if you don’t have eight steel orbs before your phantom form energy runs out.

This will take a number of attempts I lost count of how many times I had too many or too few katanas, I also couldn’t do this unless I had only one life as I just didn’t have enough phantom form energy to collect the last few steel orbs otherwise.

One last tip for collecting steel the closer you are to an enemy when you get them the more steel you get from them.

Oh and items floating around your ship and phantom disappear over time, so speed really is required here.

I got this achievement on the first level after killing myself twice at the very start to increase my phantom form energy bar."

This guide needs to be alot more detailed in places, as it just doesn't provide much information. Big Catch is a real pain to unlock and I can't find a good guide for it on the net.

Type-C, 2nd midboss. Place your option on top of the boss, hold down the autofire button and tap the laser button to produce lots of energy items fast (you'll notice if you hit 72 pieces when your option can't hold any more energy in place and they start to leave the screen), then just graze the midboss' bullets. His patterns should be dense enough to make the energy items grow to maximum size before they disappear.
