10 Years Ago on This Day...

... we were blessed with one of the best hip hop albums of all time.

Can't believe that it has been 10 years. I still remember going to the store and getting my copy even though I had the bootleg. This album was worth the purchase.

I thought this was sarcasm for a moment but as you're serious... i got this album for 1 from an addict who'd stolen it from somewhere and i wouldn't have owned it otherwise.

Each to their own and all that, it's a decent album but i wouldn't consider it one of the best hip hop albums of all time. I don't know if the overplaying of it had an effect at the time so it may have aged better than i remember.

It could just be the way the industry has changed or because i don't listen to much hip hop these days but i still believe many rap artists of the early to mid 90's were the greatest of all time.

I didn't know we could do these tribute threads, stay tuned for my Taylor Swift one

I completely agree, Curtis isn't the illiterate thug many people see him as. He is more of a philanthropist and a business connoisseur.

lol@"real music" and dead at an Oasis album being considered classic.

Maybe some of you guys were 5 or 6. Not pulling the age card but if you were in NYC, you couldn't go 5 minutes w/o a car driving by and hearing 50 Cent on the radio. No other artist since 50 Cent has been able to generate that same buzz. Not even a Lady GaGa or Taylor Swift.

Sgt. Peppers, that's possibly the worst album I ever heard. It's up there with Bob Dylan's first album.

And LZIII is no classic. Great album but no where near I, II, IV, HOTH or Physical Graffiti.

Yes you are, and that's a bad decision. You've got a year on me, so don't try that bullshit.

That's a gross overstatement, and you know it. Having "buzz" in one place doesn't reflect everywhere else. The only people who were listening to it here were the chavs everyone hates.

After seeing you use the word Chav, I see you guys are from the UK.

It's understandable

You guys should have been here in NYC during 2003.

2XL white Ts, Yankee fitted, saggy jeans, white ups, and Fif on your ipod/cd player. The good ol' days.

Ok, so how about a real modern classic. More to the point, a classic from NYC anno 2002.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Turn_on_the_Bright_Lights . . .

And also, LOL@ Sgt Pepper, philistine.

I listen to Interpol as well as The Strokes.

But neither those two bands generated the buzz that 50 had. You can dislike his music but you can't diminish that great run he had.

The only other time that I can think of an artist being on the radio constantly was Michael Jackson when he died.

Had being the operative of course, he is now a has been, and looking back all these years later it is now blatantly obvious why his career is dead. Simply because he was never that good. I actually now feel ashamed for even liking this 10 years ago....

50 cent was pretty much the first modern example of being able to flog a dead horse if a record label just put enough cash into it. And now we have Bieber et al.

As for Interpol/The Strokes, they never needed the hype/buzz because they could rely on their own talent. Just look at TOTBL or Is This It, 10-12 years on these are widely regarded as classics and 50 has been consigned to the bargain-bin of history.

So basically, according to your argument any record label could have created their own 50 Cent?

Lets see someone else emulate 50's run.

Yup, that's exactly what I'm saying. You caught on fast. More to the point, most labels actually have.

Let's start then, Who has been successful in the industry whilst completely lacking in talent? (Please feel free to add if I've missed any)

Rihanna
Bieber
One Direction
Lil Wayne
Britney Spears
Most rap artists between 2005-now
Coldplay

Need I continue?

Each one of these is signed to a major label with a major marketing budget. They could probably record the pope farting into a mic and get it to number 1 on the billboard 200.

This thread is hilarious. Not as funny as this tweet sent out by 50 himself.

Top 5, dead or alive? LMFAO! Disrespecting a lot of rappers who paved the way for people like him, only for people like him to rap about girls, cars and money. Oh yeah and the drugs too, the ones he claims he doesn't do.

This album is okay and nothing more.

Ever heard of Mafioso rap? The purple tape? Biggie? Even Nas was rapping about money at one point of his career.

It seems you guys are trying hard to change my opinion like religious people preaching against same sex marriage. GRODT will forever remain one of my fav albums. If I had to list my 10 most fav albums, GRODT will be #1... fighting with TDSOTM for that spot.

If Coldplay is going to be on that list of no talented artist then I'll be gadly to add Oasis on there along with the majority of metal bands.

If David could go against Goliath with a stone
I can go at Nas and Jigga, both for the throne

Jay-Z retired after that.

We aren't trying to change your mind, we are just stating in a subjective manor that GRODT just isn't a classic. That you like it is wonderful, I mean, somebody has to.

Name one thing that Coldplay has done, that is on any level comparable to Oasis' achievements..... In 15-20 years time we'll look back at Coldplay with the same shame as we now do with the Spice Girls. Oasis on the other hand, along with other bands from that era of britpop (i.e. the verve, Blur, Pulp etc.) will still be thought of as being good.

Now, stop arguing and enjoy your 10 year old mediocrity.

Album for album Coldplay stands with 3 good as opposed to Oasis who only have 2, everything else after that is trash.

The Stone Roses>oasis
The Kooks>oasis
Arctic Monkeys>oasis

Better UK bands than those blokes... lol bloke, such a funny word.

I have to thank Jay-Z for introducing me to them blokes, Oasis.
